Exclusive: Brian Tyree Henry Talks “Child’s Play,” FINALLY Meeting Rihanna, “Atlanta” Season 3, His Morehouse Experience & More!

Source: Slaven Vlasic/Getty Images Exclusive Brian Tyree Henry Interview Brian Tyree Henry isn’t a rapper but he plays one on TV–a very relatable and refreshingly complex rapper with a burgeoning career who steals scene after scene (after scene) on critically-acclaimed hit show “Atlanta.” And that’s only one of several power moves for the Emmy AND Tony-nominated North Carolina native currently having an enviable Hollywood run that started with Oscar-worthy masterpiece “If Beale Street Could Talk,” continued with Oscar-winning dazzler “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse” and carried over into 2019 with several eye-catching roles headlined by “ Joker ” and… “Child’s Play???” Yep, a next-level Chucky movie that we couldn’t wait to ask him about during the “Child’s Play” press day where we talked (and laughed) about everything from killer doll nostalgia to Black folks in Horror movies to Rihanna in our fave interview of 2019. Let’s get into “Child’s Play”–what were your first thoughts when you realized you were playing a cop in a Chucky movie? “Actually when I got the script it didn’t say “Child’s Play” on it… so I started reading it and the story was pretty damn good. It was a really cool read. And then I saw the name Chucky and I was like ‘Yo…nahhh, there’s no way..’ because I’m like a Horror movie freak–I LOVE Horror movies, it’s my favorite genre and when I got to Chucky I was like ‘Oh sh*t, this has gotta be the new Chucky’ so then I looked at my character and was like ‘oh wait, hold up, this character is actually really brave because, you know , being Black in a Horror movie they don’t really give us good characters–we’re the first people to get killed in the first three minutes of the movie… But in this movie my character Detective Mike Norris is very smart, very charismatic, is really humorous, and literally the relationship he had with his mom, and his relationship with Andy were very important to me and so I was like ‘ok cool, there’s actually a character here’ *laughs* it was something that really attracted me to it. And at the end of the day, I remember when “Child’s Play’ came out in 1988 when I was 6-years-old.. I literally remember the Christmas it came out and, at the time, there was this doll called “My Buddy” and people were going into the store and fighting over these things, man, and it was on the news and I was just like ‘I’m never gonna get one of these dolls’ and as soon as this movie came out everyone threw them away so all that consumerism you were going through to get this doll, once this movie came out it shut the doll’s sales down… and that’s kinda why I like Horror movies because there really is a commentary on the social dynamics we live in.. It really turns the mirror on you to make you confront the things we’re actually afraid of in our real lives and that’s us as a society sometimes. So once I saw this was coming my way I jumped at it because I’ve always been a huge fan of this franchise and Chucky was such a part of my life growing up and I really just liked the retelling of the story they were doing and was like ‘this is actually really fresh and really relevant to today’ because instead of it being a serial killer dropped into a doll as it used to be.. this is like an artificial intelligence… it really is programmed to know everything about your life–like, everything –there’s an upgrade you can download and that’s way more terrifying–that, to me, is way more terrifying that there’s this doll that has access to your entire life. It’s still learning and growing–you’re gonna find yourself actually caring about Chucky–I’m not gon’ lie–I was surprised.. I was like ‘I actually like this dude, I really want him to win out here’ and I really just thought that was fun. It’s been so long since we’ve had a fun Horror movie. That was one of my favorite experiences about going to the Horror movies where I grew up is like, you know, if we’re in a theater full of Black people watching a Horror movie, we are gonna talk sh*t. We’re gonna say how we feel *laughs* and when I saw this I was like ‘Oh my God, this is a callback to one of those movies where you have to have that commentary. You have to clap and celebrate–it’s fun! And I was just really happy to be apart of something like that because that’s kinda what I knew and I’m a big nerd when it comes to this so… it was like me being a kid in a candy store” We realized the legendary Mark Hamill (who played “Luke Skywalker” in the “Star Wars” saga and voiced the Joker in “Batman: The Animated Series”) was voicing Chucky and were like ‘Whoa WHOAAA’ so what was that like for you–a big nerd? “Everything I’ve been doing in my career, honestly, is my inner-nerd just losing its mind and I think that’s why I take the things that I do because I think about myself being that 13-year-old kid at my locker and thinking about what kinda pictures I would’ve taped on the inside of my locker–all of the things I’ve done so far would’ve been in my locker *laughs* so having “Child’s Play” be that other little thing–that other little piece, right there–is great and then Mark Hamill, man, I’m gonna tell you something: the emotion that he brings to Chucky and the wonder he brings to Chucky and the sinisterness he brings to Chucky is really unbelievable and I think that’s why you feel for Chucky the way you do because of him” You got Joker, you got this, you had Spider-man [Into The Spider-Verse]–did you see yourself getting into your lane so fast in your career? No! I still try to act like I don’t see that because I don’t ever want it to take away that kind of joy, that kind of wonderment of what I do. It makes me very happy and I don’t ever wanna get to a place where I’m just like ‘Ohh, you know, tick that box, tick that box, tick that box, because there’s an endless array of boxes to tick for me” How did your experience at an HBCU—Morehouse College–shape your journey (and perspective) in Hollywood? I think that–not just Morehouse in it of itself–but the city of Atlanta shaped that for me because I moved there when I was 18 and I didn’t really start getting into theatre arts until my second semester sophomore year but it was something I’ve always done even in high school I was doing speech and debate and it was always an escape for me because the plays I was told to read or the plays we were given as assignments never had characters that reflected people who looked like me. You could give me Chekhov all day, you could give me Henrik Ibsen all day, but nothing is saying I could be this young dude in Russia so, for me, it was an escape. It was fun to play these parts and run around pretending to be these men in society I was told I’ll never be because of where I’m from and because I’m Black. So, at the end of the day, when I got to Morehouse here I am looking to my left and to my right seeing other people who have the same passion as I do but then I’m also in a city where I’m looking to my left and to my right and everyone looks like me and everyone’s excelling in the same way and the city is giving me space to be who the hell I am– Atlanta literally shaped me into the person I am today and it’s because I saw in a place like that endless possibilities for us as Black people–like, endless –are you telling me I can own a store? We all got our own neighborhoods? Like, what do you mean??? So, for me, it kinda revolutionized how I saw my self within this genre and made me feel like there was nothing couldn’t do and then, here I am, in “Child’s Play” playing this detective that you actually give a damn about…that was icing on the cake” We saw you say that Rihanna made you cry and since we’re talking about Atlanta–where would you take Rihanna in the city if yall were hanging out? What would yall do? “OK, alright! I’ve actually got a chance not too long ago to meet Rihanna–I went to the Gold Party… Rihanna came up to me with open arms–she was like ‘I’ve been watching you, I’m so proud of you, thank you for giving Fenty all the love’ because I’m always reppin like ‘Yo, Fenty Beauty is the bomb, everybody needs to support Rihanna’ and as I’m going in for a hug I break her drink–I drop her drink out of her hand–and I was like ‘are you kidding me? How could you do that?’ and with such grace and poise, as Rihanna does, she’s like ‘no-no-no, don’t worry about it, it’s just a drink, what are you drinking?’ AND THEN SHE GOES TO GET HERSELF A DRINK AND ME A DRINK… So then I’m trying not to cry again but it’s that kinda thing–my inner-nerd–like of course, I made her drop her drink but it was still–I learned a lot about myself *laughs* But yea, there’s nothing greater than to see people from your generation killin’ the game. I feel like I’ve gotten to my rise watching her–like, watching us all excel in this way and its just pride, man. It really just makes me proud but I still broke her drink, though” Is there anything you can tell us about Season 3 of Atlanta? “Thaaaat, it will be back next year *laughs* but know that we’ll be coming back for sure” “Child’s Play” in theaters now!

Jackson State University Student Creates Straw That Filters Lead

F or Jackson State University graduate student LaMonté Pierce what started out as a class project focused on addressing an issue faced by communities in Mississippi led to the creation of a product designed to combat lead poisoning in water, WJTV reported. The JSU graduate student has received impressive offers from big retailers like Walmart which offered to sell CleanStraww in nearly 4,000 stores. https://t.co/0R8Zxwu4Tj — Lanaya Lewis (@LanayaLewis) June 20, 2019 Pierce and other students that he collaborated with decided to use the assignment as an avenue to address water contamination impacting the City of Jackson. They designed a straw that could be used to filter water. Pierce and his classmate Andrew Willis decided to go beyond the project and continue to do research and testing to turn the straw into a product that would be a catalyst in addressing water contamination in communities across the globe. Pierce’s efforts led to the creation of Cleanstraww . The straws are made of non-toxic materials and has a three-step filtering process which divides sediment and particles from water. He utilized a 3-D printer for the creation of the straw. “I saw somewhere they were drinking out of toilets, they were drinking from the river, different things like that. They use simple filters that you can find in everyday filters, but the thing was they did not filter out lead. If we can filter out lead, we can pretty much filter out anything,” he told the news outlet. “Take the responsibility of clean water directly out of the government, state and city officials hands and put it in the hands of the consumers. If you want clean water, here you go.” Several national retailers have expressed interest in selling his product, including Walmart. Pierce hopes that he can find investors for his product to grow his business and create more jobs in Mississippi. Products like Cleanstraww are needed. According to CBS News , lead in America’s water systems has become a growing national crisis. Tom Holland & Zendaya Talk Internet Chatter, Euphoria & Spider-Man: Far From Home

The rest is here:

Tom Holland and Zendaya work magic together on the big screen in the latest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man: Far From Home. The first movie after the events of Avengers: Endgame, it has a giant responsibility to be great and it doesn’t disappoint. I went out to London in the United Kingdom to sit down with Zendaya, Tom Holland and Jacob Batalon. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years one of the biggest rumors is, “Are Tom Holland and Zendaya dating” and during the press for this movie people have been doing a lot of speculation about that subject in order to get a confirmation. I’m sure there will be even more assumptions after people finally get to see Spider-Man: Far From Home on July 2nd, 2019 when it hits theaters. I asked Tom and Zendaya what are they expecting the chatter to be like once the film is released and Tom, blushed while saying, “The obvious things.” While Zendaya gushed, “It’s there, and it will always be there.”  Tom then revealed he is excited for people to see the movie, “We make this film for the fans, and always like to think we don’t present people with a film, we share a film with them. I’m just excited for the fans to be a part of this process, we’ve all loved being a part of this process and making it and now it’s time to share it and I really can’t wait to hear what people think.” During the rest of the interview, Tom and Jacob talk about watching Euphoria for the first time and what they thought about the show when Zendaya told them she was starring in the latest HBO show. I also asked Zendaya which high school life is more like real life high school, Euphoria or Spider-Man, she said, “It’s two different experiences and it depends on people’s walks of life.” To which Tom poked fun at me saying, You would rather elemental creature destroying their high schools? You would rather Thanos!” The entire interview was fun and definitely worth watching be sure to catch Spider-Man: Far From Home in theaters.

Another Black Designer Finds A Carbon Copy Of Her Work For Sale Online

Source: Mireya Acierto / Mireya Acierto / Stringer When white designers replicate one another, intentionally or otherwise, they are called derivative, and uninspired. When they copy Black designers , they are rewarded for their efforts with the cloak of invisibility that shrouds Black women. This week Instagram learned of yet another Black fashion designer being forced to watch their creativity line the pockets of others. Fe Noel , who has been using her Caribbean heritage to create, elegant staples and lush statement pieces for years, posted side by side images of pants she designed for a previous collection with those presented by designer Ulla Johnson. Beneath the image she anticipated the fury of her followers writing, “I’ll let you be the judge.” Social media did not disappoint quickly pointing out that the similarities between the items appeared to be more than coincidental. That didn’t stop Net-A-Porter from charging $395 for them. This happens all the time and when everyone is forwarding the offending image or video to their timelines, they are rarely discussing how it occurs over and over. Source: Mireya Acierto / Mireya Acierto / Stringer These incidents take place because while mainstream retailers love to scope out the trends set by Black artists and consumers they don’t pay as close attention to the people behind them. The question of whether or not Ulla Johnson had seen Noel’s design prior to creating her pant is just one part of the equation. Whether or not any one at Net-A-Porter has ever bothered to look any the beautiful lookbooks presented by Noel season after season is another. In order for Black designers, Black editors, Black writers, Black stylists, and Black writers to flourish people have to quit stalling their research at their immediate circles. This is not someone who is obscure or unknown. She is a design powerhouse who is gaining hard won steam every season and she deserves to be seen and respected. Source: laven Vlasic/Getty Images / (Photo by Slaven Vlasic/Getty Images) It’s not hard to imagine that the buyer would have noticed if Johnson presented an option that was reminiscent of one of the many identical blonde Brooklynites lining the walls of Bloomingdales. They should be just as familiar with Black designers who are making strides. Noel has been featured in Vogue multiple times. She was one of three designers who teamed up with Lebron James and Harlem’s Fashion Row for a historic Nike collaboration. Her aesthetics is consistent and easily recognizable to anyone interested in paying attention. The work of the Fe Noels of the world should be celebrated beyond the black community because they’re stylish, they’re important, and more often than not they were probably here first. Editors Note: HelloBeautiful reached out to both Fe Noel and representatives for Ulla Johnson regarding the similarities in the designs. Neither party responded to requests for comment at the time of publication. DON’T MISS: Will Rihanna’s Deal With LVMH Be The Key To More Black Women In Fashion? Lisa Vanderpump to Skip Jax Taylor & Brittany Cartwright’s Wedding

Earlier today, we reported on the sad news that Lisa Vanderpump’s mother has passed away at the age of 84. The death of Jean Vanderpump comes just one year after Lisa’s brother, Mark Vanderpump, committed suicide . The news also closely follows closely on the heels of reports that Lisa has quit The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in response to a falling out with her fellow cast members. With all of this going on, it’s not surprising that Lisa will be stepping away from the spotlight in order to return to England and be with her family. Unfortunately, that means she’ll miss a major social event that’s sure to factor prominently in both the lives of her close friends and the eighth season of her eponymous reality show. Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright are set to get married next weekend, and Radar Online is now reporting that Lisa will not be in attendance. “Lisa will not be able to go to the wedding,” says one insider . While Jax and Brittany are said to be disappointed by the news, they have reportedly expressed their support for her decision. The source claims that Taylor and Cartwright have not yet spoken to Lisa in person, but have contacted her via text message. “They have reached out to send their condolences, and accept she needs to step away from filming the show right now so she can attend to her family,” says the insider. Lisa was also scheduled to be a guest of honor at World Pride events in New York on June 30. Sadly, she will be forced to miss those events, as well. “Lisa loves and supports the LGBTQ community, but knows that they will understand,” says the tipster. The insider goes on to say that Lisa is at the lowest point of her life after losing two immediate family members in such rapid succession. “She’s absolutely devastated at losing her mother when she is still grieving over the loss of her brother,” says the source. Stars and colleagues alike have offered their condolences to the reality star and restaurateur, but we’re sure words are of little comfort at this time. All the same, our thoughts are with Lisa during this tremendously difficult time. We hope she takes all the help she needs and finds support wherever she can. Joe Biden Senselessly Suggested ‘Civility’Toward Segregationists & The Innanet Dragged Him To The CLUELESS Chasm

Source: W.Wade/WENN / WENN Joe Biden Dragged For Suggesting Civil Working Relationship With Segregationists Joe Biden got BLASTED after he suggested the nation work toward a “civil” relationship with segregationists this week. According to NPR , he told donors at a fundraiser in NY Tuesday night: “I was in a caucus with James O. Eastland,” Biden said, according to a pool report. “He never called me ‘boy’; he always called me ‘son.’ ” “Well, guess what? At least there was some civility,” Biden said, also pointing to a working relationship he forged with Georgia Sen. Herman Talmadge, another segregationist Democrat. “We got things done. We didn’t agree on much of anything. We got things done. We got it finished. But today, you look at the other side and you’re the enemy. Not the opposition, the enemy. We don’t talk to each other anymore.” Is dude serious?? New Jersey senator Cory Booker wasted no time responding… “You don’t joke about calling black men ‘boys,’ ” New Jersey Sen.
