Image via Getty Nia Wilson’s Murderer Apprehended And Arrested The man murdered Nia Wilson aboard a BART train in Oakland has been arrested after a long day of manhunting according to SFGate . John Lee Cowell was apprehended after a witness who was riding another BART train called the police to notify them that she had spotted him toward Richmond. After combing that area, officers received another call saying that Cowell had jumped trains and was headed in another direction. Police intercepted the train and found Cowell upon a search. At this time authorities are preparing to interview him and find out exactly what his motive was for his violent attack on the sisters. Most of us Black folks who know how this thing works are assuming he is a racist piece of s#!t. [Police Chief Carlos] Rojas said Cowell wasn’t armed when police approached him, and that Cowell was truthful when officers asked for his name and provided them with a California identification card. We hope they deep fry this guy like a catfish filet.
T he arrival of summer generates excitement. But it could also bring challenges for both parents and educators. Many students experience a loss in math learning during the summer months known commonly as “summer slide.” Students from middle-class families may not be as affected as they have access to more resources to make up for the learning loss. However, those from lower-income backgrounds could experience significant losses, particularly in math and reading. Researchers point to the summer slide as a contributing factor in the persistent academic achievement gap between students from lower-income backgrounds and their middle-class peers. But, does race also conflate with class, when it comes to summer slide? What does summertime mean for black children and the parents and caregivers who care for them? We are education researchers who are black and parents to two black children – one in elementary school and another in preschool. If the U.S. imagination constructs summer as a time for swimming, free play, baseball and lazy days on the beach, it has never played out this way in our home. We feel the weight of summer – both for its limitations and its possibilities. To us, the summer is less a time to focus solely on fun and more of what we call the “summer soar.” Summer goals for black parents The term “summer soar” is not taken from research or policy studies. We use it to reflect the triple burden that some parents of color – in our case, black parents – could endure during the summer months. For these parents, summertime provides time to accomplish three goals: (1) reinforce what was learned in the previous year, (2) get a head start on the upcoming year and, most importantly, (3) supplement valuable yet missing curriculum knowledge generally not offered in traditional schools that reflects students’ racial and cultural identities. Let’s look at what we mean by missing curriculum knowledge. We offer an example of this in a study we conducted with a researcher at Sacramento State College, Julian Vasquez-Heilig . The study examined how culture and race were addressed in the most recently adopted 11th grade U.S. history Texas state standards. Findings highlighted that topics in the social studies standards did not fully address the contributions of people of color in the U.S. In the case of black people, much of the focus centered only on cultural contributions and not on the other ways black people contributed to the U.S. narrative. Added to this was the tendency to give partial attention to the legacy of racism. This history of U.S. racism was not discussed as foundational to the development and maintenance of the country. Black students’ mis-education This is not unique to Texas nor found in the area of social studies alone. Education researchers have long acknowledged how official K-12 school curriculum and approaches to teaching fail to affirm black students’ cultural identities. They also reinforce the belief that black people have not made any contributions to the U.S. society. As far back as the turn of the 20th century, notable scholars including W.E.B. Du Bois , Carter G. Woodson and Anna Julia Cooper addressed the problems and limitations of schooling for African-Americans . As a result, black students run the risk of experiencing what historian Carter G. Woodson called “mis-education.” Mis-education is a process where school knowledge helps to foster a sense of contempt or disregard for one’s own histories and experiences, regardless of the level of education attained. So, for us as parents and educators, the “summer soar” is not just about further developing our son’s academics. It is also about fostering a consciousness to help ward off the subtle effects of mis-education – a concern shared by many black families. Why it is uniquely burdensome We recognize that black parents are not the only ones worried about their children’s academic achievement and social development. Families, in general, are critical about the overreliance on standardized testing that makes school less a place for meaningful engagement . Yet what makes the “summer slide” and as a consequence the “summer soar” experience of black parents uniquely burdensome is the context in which it occurs. Along with the curriculum and teaching problems black children encounter in schools around race and culture, there is a legacy of positioning black males and black children in troubling, dehumanizing ways. For example, scholars note that black children, specifically black boys, are often viewed as mature and “adult-like.” Their behaviors and experiences are not seen as part of the normal arc of childhood development. Scholars find that in this “adultification” process, black children are not given the allowance of childhood innocence . These “deficit-oriented” perspectives are found not only in academic literature, but also in public policy, popular media and everyday conversations. A contemporary reflection of this is found in the call for the popular #BlackLivesMatter movement. Being black in the summer To be clear: We don’t feel we are approaching the “summer slide” or our “summer soar” from a place of unfounded anxiety or as parents too focused on their child’s education. Black people have been and continue to be dealt with in schools and society in deeply problematic ways. Just consider the growing number of black families that are choosing to homeschool their children. In a study that examined the perspectives of 74 African-American homeschoolers in the U.S., researchers Ama Mazama and Garvey Lundy found that the second most important reason that black parents chose to homeschool , right behind concerns with quality of education, was to protect against the racism found in traditional school settings. Being black in the summer (or anytime really) is not easy. The challenge black families face is navigating an educational context that requires excelling in mainstream school settings, while buffering against the very same education systems that deny one’s humanity. This summer, like all summers for us, is filled with ambitious goals. We want to help our rising second grader memorize multiplication facts, advance his reading level and improve his writing. But we also want to introduce him to poetry and literature by black authors, teach him about ancient African civilizations and expose him to the concepts of fairness and justice as key to the black struggle in the U.S. Our task is not easy. But it is our reality – one that we share with countless others – that goes unrecognized in the popular discussions around “summer slide” and the idyllic dream of a lazy summer. Sure, Farrah Abraham is still fired from Teen Mom OG , but that doesn't mean she's about to go gently into the good night of former reality star obscurity. In fact, she's been on her grind more than ever lately, making tabloid headlines like it's her job … which we suppose it sort of is. In the past few weeks, Farrah has been arrested for assault ; she's launched feuds with fellow washed-up reality stars, and of course, she's been posting scantily-clad photos to her social media pages. The girl has a product to sell, and it's herself. She's banking on people like you wanting to know all about her hopes, dreams, and upcoming porn projects. And now, it seems she's under the impression that you'll be willing to pay for that privilege: 1. The Farrah Files Yes, folks, it’s finally here — the app that puts all others to shame! Take a hike, Google Maps! Beat it, Uber! The official farrah Abraham app is now available for download! 2. Creativity — Not Her Strong Suit Yes, quite lamely, the app is named simply “Farrah Abraham.” This might create confusion among fans who wish to purchase Farrah’s, um … other services. 3. Knowing Her Audience But what Farrah lacks in innovation, she makes up for with shameless self-promotion. Here she is pitching her app to fans as only she can. 4. Come Again? For the most part, she’s clearly just reading from cue cards here, but there’s a weird bit at the end about how much she likes “the outdoors and summer.” Anyway, it might be the least nonsensical she’s ever been. 5. A Heaping Helping of Word Salad And of course, no Farrah post would be complete without a massive block of emoji-laden text as a caption. “I’m freakin out my first app launched today at the @apple store,” Farrah wrote, adding that she’s hoping to take a break Instagram and Twitter for the foreseeable future. 6. Farrah For Sale! “So happy I have my own app now & can have a break from social media! Enter to win a LA trip to join me for my App launch pool party!” Abraham wrote. Yes, Farrah wants to invite one lucky fan to bang … sorry, we mean HANG with her in Los Angeles. View Slideshow
As previously previewed, The Real Housewives of New York City are getting ready to set sail on the boat trip from Hell . But People Magazine now confirms that Luann de Lesseps is getting ready for a very different, far more important kind of trip: She is checking back into rehab. The 53-year-old will be seeking help for the second time after attending an alcohol treatment program last year, following her arrest for some very drunken and ugly behavior in Florida. Bethenny Frankel actually confirmed the development to People. She told the publication that Luann considers the problem so serious that she must begin addressing it immediately and will therefore miss the upcoming Season10 reunion special. “This weekend, Luann was surrounded by her girlfriends and decided – with their support – that in light of recent circumstances, it is the healthiest choice for her not to attend Tuesday’s reunion taping so that she can continue in her healing process,” Frankel explains , adding: “Luann is now surrounded by a core group of people who truly have her best interests at heart and who are working to make sure she gets the help she needs.” Concluded Frankel: “Bravo has been very supportive of Luann during this time. “It’s a brave and honest decision by her, and everyone is rallying around her and wants the best for her.” The long-time reality star was arrested just before Christmas for allegedly kicking a police officer . Reportedly very drunk at the time of the incident, Luann reacted to a confrontation with cops in a Florida hotel room by screaming that she would “kill” them all and by violently attacking at least one officer, according to reports. She was booked on the charges of battery on a law enforcement officer; resisting arrest with violence; corruption by threat. Just days later, Luann checked into rehab for the first time . “After the events of last Saturday night in Palm Beach, I am truly embarrassed,” said de Lesseps at the time. “I have decided to seek professional guidance and will be voluntarily checking into an alcohol treatment center. I intend to turn this unfortunate incident into a positive life changing event. “Once again, I sincerely apologize for my actions. I have the greatest respect for police officers and the job they do. “My actions alleged in the police report do not reflect my core values and my law abiding character.” This is her mug shot from the arrest: In this instance, her cable network home has said the following: Bravo supports Luann’s decision to focus on her health. “She is part of the Bravo family and we continue to stand by her as she copes with this challenging situation. At this time, we hope everyone will respect her privacy.” Her decision to return to rehab comes days after news broke that her first husband, Alexandre de Lesseps, her daughter, Victoria de Lesseps, and son, Noel de Lesseps, filed a lawsuit against her over an $8 million home sale. According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Luann breached a stipulation of settlement in her divorce by failing to create a trust “for the benefit of her two children.” Frankel acknowledges that such “family stress” has served as a “catalyst” for her co-star to realize she needs help. We wish Luann the best of luck. View Slideshow: 25 Celebrities Who Have Been to Rehab
If you’ve been keeping up with recent episodes of Floribama Shore , you know that Kortni Gilson seems head over heels for her boyfriend, Logan. But reality episodes air months after being filmed. In real life, Kortni got a restraining order against Logan for stalking and violence. And he has already been charged with violating the order. Starcasm reports that, on April 23, Kortni Gilson filed a restraining order against Logan. The protective order was filed for violence and for stalking. They also report that, on May 18, Logan was charged for violating the restraining order. He was apparently seen riding his skateboard in front of her residence. He is said to have then illegally entered a club where she was located. Within that club, he allegedly ran up to Kortni and other victims, plural, and only left when he saw that someone was on the phone. The specifics of the alleged violence that prompted the order are unknown, but he was cited for disorderly conduct at Diego’s Bar and Grill just before 3 PM on the same day on which the order was filed. “Upon arrival, I observed the defendant standing in the roadway doing inappropriate hand gestures (shotting [sic] the bird) to the restaurant staff,” the responding officer’s report reads. “The defendant proceeded to yell “f–k you” loudly towards the staff,” the officer writes. “During this,” the report says. “The restaurant was open for business.” This apparently happened across the street from a location where families were shopping with their children, as the officer notes. Fans and viewers are not necessarily surprised by this grim turn of events. Many minds immediately went to Logan’s toxic, unhealthy reactions on the show. Remember when Kortni was hopelessly drunk? Okay, that’s too vague. Remember when she was so drunk that she had to be carried into the vehicle? She was goofing around while Logan seemed to be looking at her and seething. Instead of supporting her or checking on her health, he instead walked over to her and, in front of everyone and the cameras, chastised her for “embarrassing” him. After seeing that display of fury, it is all too easy for a lot of Floribama Shore viewers to see his anger turning violent. But it appears that Kortni was not the only person who took out a restraining order on Logan. It was apparently Sean Hogan, a producer on the series, who called the police when Logan barged into the club. Which is why it is now believed that perhaps the entire cast and crew of Floribama Shore is included within the protective order against Logan. We don’t know what he did to prompt this. But we do know that this is not his first time getting in trouble with the law. Logan has multiple mug shots for a reason. In October of 2016, Logan was arrested for harassing communications. In June of 2016, Logan was charged with felony first-degree theft of property. In June of 2017, Logan was charged with disorderly conduct. This kind of criminal history suggests that Logan is a person with behavioral problems. We hope that the entire cast and crew of Floribama Shore remains safe. Viewers will now have to cringe their way through the final episodes depicting Kortni’s romance with Logan. View Slideshow: 23 Biggest Douchebags on Reality TV

Source: Halfdark / Getty While on a recent vacation, a Black family of seven had the police called on them. Their crime? Eating at Subway and using the bathroom too often. According to WSB-TV , the Dobson family claims that an employee complained to the Coweta County, Ga., authorities that she feared the large family was frequently going back to the bathroom and could possibly be stealing soda into water cups. “I need somebody to come through here please, ASAP. Now,” the employee said on the recorded call. “There’s about eight people in a van, and they’ve been in the store for about an hour. They keep going back and forth to the bathrooms by my back door.” Felicia Dobson says her family was driving back to North Carolina from their grandmother’s birthday when they stopped at a Subway to eat dinner. She stressed to WSB that they weren’t doing anything wrong. “I have a 24-year-old sister who’s a recent graduate of North Carolina A&T (State University). My daughter’s 19. She’s entering sophomore year at Wake Forest University,” Felicia Dobson said. She also is clear about what she believes the entire situation was about: Race. “I don’t think she ever felt threatened,” Dobson said. “We can’t change our skin color. I have great kids. I have a great family.” In the meantime, Subway franchise owner Rosh Patel told WSB: “I take this very seriously, and I am fully investigating. I have also used this opportunity to reiterate to my staff the importance of making everyone feel welcome.” RELATED NEWS: You A Lie Patty!
