Aspiring Talk Show Host Martha Stewart Wants Interview With ‘Phenomenal,’ ‘Beautiful’ Nancy Pelosi

What two words come to mind when you think of Speaker Nancy Pelosi? If you said “phenomenal” and “beautiful,” you will probably be a fan of Martha Stewart’s new talk show. That’s how Stewart described the speaker, who she told reporters she’d like to have as her first guest. The comments indicate that Stewart’s new show will be yet another addition to daytime TV’s liberal talk lineup. “She’s a phenomenal woman – look at what she’s done,” Stewart said on a conference call, referring to Pelosi. “And she’s absolutely beautiful.” Stewart went on to state, “I’m an American. I’m involved as much as anyone in the political fabric of the country.” That may be true, but her Pelosi statement suggests she doesn’t share the general sentiments of the nation (hardly surprising, given she’s worth almost a billion dollars ) – only 11 percent of the nation has a favorable view of the Speaker. And though she aspires to replace retiring talkers Barbara Walters and Larry King as the nation’s premiere political and cultural interview, Stewart doesn’t exactly emote political proficiency. She referred to President Barack Obama’s Tuesday Oval Office address as “his State of the Union Speech.” As for the “beautiful” claim…well, it’s in the eye of the beholder I suppose. Stewart also expressed her desire to interview Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. But she did not heap the praise on Clinton that she did on Pelosi. She obviously has a deep affinity with the Speaker. Which, again, raises the question of how in tune with the political attitudes of the nation she really is. All signs point to her show being yet another politically liberal addition to daytime television.

Shameful News Industry Willing To Sacrifice Wikileaks To Get Shield Law | Techdirt

http://techdirt.com/images/topic_journalism.gif A few weeks ago, we noted, with some disappointment, that the politicians who had been pushing for a much needed federal shield law for journalism, Senators Chuck Schumer and Dianne Feinstein, were taking the politically expedient route of adding a specific amendment designed to keep Wikileaks out of the bill's protections( http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100804/10343410497.shtml ). Apparently, a bunch of newspaper folks have apparently stepped forward to support this move. Douglas Lee, at The First Amendment Center has an opinion piece calling those people out for sacrificing their overall principles just to get the shield law approved( http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/commentary.aspx?id=23303 ). The whole thing is a great read, but a few key snippets: > > It doesn't seem all that long ago that representatives of the newspaper > > industry would have recoiled from working with Congress to deny legal > > protection to anyone who leaked confidential or classified documents. > > Today, however, they seem happy to be doing so. Lee the goes on to quote various industry reps distancing themselves from Wikileaks and putting it down as “not journalism.” He also quotes them admitting that they feel they have to throw Wikileaks under the bus, or the law won't get passed, and then calls them out on the impact of that decision, hinting at the fact that at least some of this might be due to traditional journalists simply not liking new upstarts that are changing the game — like Wikileaks. > > As comforting as it might be to “real” journalists to incorporate editorial > > oversight into a shield law and to use it to distinguish further between the > > “us” who are entitled to the law's protections and the “them” who are not, > > at least two dangers exist in that approach. > > First, does anyone — including the most mainstream of traditional journalists > > — really think it a good idea that Congress and judges define, analyze and > > evaluate what is appropriate “editorial oversight”? For decades, news > > organizations have struggled to resist those efforts in libel cases and, > > so far, those struggles have succeeded. If those same organizations > > now invite legislators and judges into their newsrooms to see how worthy > > their reporters are of protection under a shield law, they shouldn't be > > surprised if the legislators and judges decide to stay. > > Second, is the free flow of information really served if the act's protections > > are denied to those who don't have or practice editorial oversight? > > As Schumer acknowledged in his statement, the act already contains > > language that would limit or deny protection to those who provide or > > publish classified military secrets. Specifically exempting WikiLeaks and > > other organizations that might otherwise qualify for protection under the > > act in at least some cases seems designed not to enhance the free flow of > > information but to channel that information to mainstream sources. It is the nature of politics today to compromise principles to get things through, but this move certainly seems unfortunate — and one that I imagine many news organizations will regret down the road. added by: toyotabedzrock

Jay-Z Remix Of M.I.A.’s ‘XXXO’ Hits The Net

Jay raps about metrosexuals and machine guns over first single from M.I.A.’s upcoming album. By James Montgomery M.I.A. and Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images It’s been a fairly quiet week for M.I.A. — no feuds with New York Times journalists , nary a “Google is a puppet of the CIA” conspiracy theory floated. But all that changed on Friday (June 11), when a Jay-Z -ified remix of her first single, “XXXO” hit the Net. The a glossy, electro-stomping reworking of M.I.A.’s original track features a brand-new verse from Jay himself, in which he proclaims, “This is not my politically correct flow.” He then proceeds to spit some great lines about metrosexuals and machine guns. There’s no word on who did the actual production work for the track, and by press time, M.I.A.’s label, Interscope, had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment. The “XXXO” remix isn’t the first time Jay and M.I.A. have collaborated together. The duo — along with Kanye West, Lil Wayne and T.I. — famously tore up the stage at the 2009 Grammy Awards with their version of “Swagga Like Us,” a performance that was made even more remarkable by the fact that M.I.A. was nine-months pregnant with her first son, Ikhyd . According to reports, M.I.A. will film a video for “XXXO” — the official first single off her album ///Y/ — with iconic hip-hop director Hype Williams. The album is due to hit stores on July 13. In the past two months, M.I.A. has stepped up her rather unorthodox promotion strategy for the album, releasing a controversial video for the song “Born Free” , feuding with Lady Gaga and taking Times reporter Lynn Hirschberg to task for a less-than-flattering cover story. You can submit your own illustrations of the very Muslim prophet that incited death threats from radical Islamic groups and wall post about the merits of free speech — that is, unless you live in Pakistan.
