It’s been almost a month since Robert Durst was arrested for the murder of Susan Berman, and if he’s convicted, the millionaire real estate heir could face the death penalty. Durst has been linked to a number of other disappearances , and though he’s beaten murder raps before, the odds seem stacked against him this time, and public opinion is certainly not on his side. So naturally, what’s weighing on Durst’s mind most heavily these days is – you guessed it – pro football and opera. Durst (or someone claiming to be Durst) recently sent a bizarre letter to Los Angeles Times reporter Molly Hennesey Fiske, in which he rambled about everything from LA traffic to a past medical ailment. “My interests are pro football and opera,” Durst writes in childlike, chicken-scratch script. “Your politics and business leaders have chosen to fight rather than agree to disagree and there was no football. “Liked LA opera except for Wagner’s Ring cycle with the absurd costumes and sloped stage, a true example of Hollywood gone berserk.” Durst went on to cover his bases legally by clarifying that the letter says nothing about “charges, crimes or trials.” He then extends an offer for the reporter to visit him when he “get[s] to LA.” The letter is signed simply, “Bob.” Seems harmless, but considering some of the stories about Durst that have emerged in recent weeks, Hennesey-Fiske is probably than a little creeped out by the experience of receiving the letter. Shortly after his arrest, the judge who presided over Durst’s previous murder trial claimed that the 71-year-old left a cat’s head on her doorstep as an act of revenge. Actor Isaiah Washington appeared on CNN last night and raised eyebrows with comments about Chris Rock, racial profiling and being at “war” with police. Isaiah Washington on Racial Profiling, Chris Rock After Rock posted selfies of himself getting pulled over by police three separate times in the last seven weeks, the former Grey’s Anatomy star weighed in. Washington Tweeted, “I sold my $90,000.00 Mercedes G500 and bought 3 Prius’s, because I got tired of being pulled over by Police. #Adapt @chrisrock” #Adapt to what, exactly? The Internet quickly had a field day with questions, criticisms and retorts, making Washington an even bigger story than Rock. Isaiah wrote later, “Anyway, you millennials critique and misconstrue my message to @chrisrock I’m getting back to my work to help free all y’all. #Truthdom” The 51-year-old, who was famously fired for making homophobic slurs about (and inadvertently outing) co-star T.R. Knight, took to CNN in response. Washington told host Don Lemon: “I know a lot of people took issue to that hashtag #Adapt, thinking I was implying racial profiling and white supremacy would stop if he were in a different car.” “I will say this,” Washington added. “Since I got out of my G500 and been driving a Prius for the last four years … I have not been pulled over one time.” Lemon asked him to explain what he was saying Rock should #Adapt to, at which point he criticized the term “driving while black” and spoke of an unspecified “war.” “There’s something happening in his community or wherever he is on that road or coming in and out of whatever that terrain, they’re looking for something,” he said. “They’re policing something. And the timing, either good or bad, I think the timing for us to have this conversation it’s a good timing and bad timing for all of us.” “Because they’re looking for something. Obviously, they’re not looking for Chris Rock. Obviously he hasn’t broken any laws. And what you drive shouldn’t matter.” “But if you are at war, which we all know that we are, there is a sentiment in the air that is highly toxic, highly negative,” Isaiah continued. “And what I was doing by that tweet,” he went on, in a roundabout way, “was doing exactly what I wanted it to do, is excite a conversation .” “If we’re looking at this term ‘black’ and looking at this term ‘driving while black’ maybe we really need to look at the term ‘black’ itself and start having a different kind of holistic conversation.” The actor went on to suggest that going forward, Rock should meet with local police officials to take a stand against his recent run-ins with authorities. Well, this is unexpected. In case you’re somehow unaware, the new Clint Eastwood-Bradley Cooper film American Sniper is a massive hit with audiences, but its also drawn a good deal of criticism, in part because large portions of Chris Kyle’s memoirs – on which the film was based – are believed to be fabricated. Michael Moore referred to snipers as cowards and is still subjected to daily Twitter hate as a result. Seth Rogen compared the film to Nazi propaganda and the actor received swift and immediate backlash. Eastwood has been largely silent on the subject, so it was somewhat surprising when he decided to offer his two cents to a TMZ cameraman last night. It’s really surprising when you hear what he had to say: Clint Eastwood Talks American Sniper Yes, Squinty Clint seems to agree with those who have claimed that the film is not without its problematic elements. It’s possible that Eastwood just misunderstood the question, but it’s equally possible that he meant what he said, and that his film is being used to support political ideologies with which he doesn’t agree. Anyone who’s seen at the RNC knows that Clint is a card-carrying Republican, but he’s generally moderate and often left-leaning in his politics. Eastwood has been openly critical of the wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and though he’s clearly a supporter of the troops, it’s not surprising that he might object to some warhawks finding a message in Sniper that’s not really there. Or, it could be that he acknowledges that Kyle made some questionable claims in his autobiography and you’re not necessarily disparaging an American hero if you point out that Kyle didn’t really snipe looters after Katrina or beat up Governor Jesse Ventura. Or maybe Clint’s just defending the right of his critics to openly express their thoughts on his film. After all, Clint is pretty much the quintessential American, and what’s more American than freedom of speech? Yes, the man who recently stated that most Muslims support the attacks against Charlie Hebdo has set his sights (no pun intended) on the hotly-debated Clint Eastwood-Bradley Cooper biopic, American Sniper. It was a bold move for Maher, considering the backlash experienced by celebrities who have been critical of the film, or its subject, Chris Kyle. Michael Moore referred to snipers as cowards and received death threats online. Seth Rogen compared Sniper to Inglourious Basterds and was subjected to a barrage of enraged tweets. Of course, Maher has made a career out of being contrary and taking things a step further than even the most ardent leftists are willing to go, and that’s just what he did when sharing his views on Chris Kyle: Bill Maher on American Sniper “He’s a psychopath patriot, and we love him,” Maher said while discussing Kyle. He then read a series of quotes from Kyle’s memoir that arguably show a different side of the Navy SEAL than what we see in Eastwood’s film. “‘I hate the damn savages’ doesn’t seem like a very Christian thing to say.” Maher concluded. The Real Time panel seemed split on Maher’s comments, but the online reaction has been predictably swift and harsh. Needless to say, lots of people weren’t thrilled with Maher’s take on the film.
