Hank the Cat: Running For U.S. Senate, Leading Democratic Candidate in Facebook Support

Democrat Tim Kaine and Republican George Allen are currently running a tight and contentious campaign for Virginia’s open seat in the U.S. Senate. They’re both political heavyweights, but right on their collective tail is an insurgent, third-party candidate who’s surging in grassroots support. That candidate is Hank the Cat. Bow down, bitches! The official site of the Hank Senate campaign claimed in a press release Friday that the 9-year-old Maine Coon (52 in human years) has pulled ahead of Kaine. In Facebook fans, anyway. Despite entering the race just two months ago, Hank’s Facebook page boasts 14,141 “likes” whereas Kaine, the state’s former governor, has 13,913. Kaine also hasn’t converted to Timeline yet, BTW. Way to stay in touch with the people. Campaign manager Matthew O’Leary said Hank initially ran to expose “the farce that is our political system,” until the movement took on a life of its own. “I do think, however, that Hank can be a serious contender in the race for the Senate seat in November, all comedy aside,” O’Leary said earlier today. “Take note of how many people are willing to support a cat over seasoned veterans. We have no doubts we will also surpass George Allen in good time!” Allen’s Facebook page has more than 43,000 “likes,” so Hank has work to do, but a lot can happen between now and November. Count him out at your peril. No word if Hank’s political platform includes tough stances on FDA pet food regulations or illegal immigration of rodents from outside America’s borders.

‘Twilight’ Star Gets Eerie In Florence And The Machine Video

‘Never Let Me Go’ clip finds Florence Welch cavorting with ‘Twilight’ star Jamie Campbell Bower, with chilling results. By James Montgomery Jamie Campbell Bower in Florence and the Machine’s video for “Never Let Me Go” Photo: Universal The last time we saw Florence Welch, she was plummeting through the New York City skyline in the spooky (and quite possibly Illuminati-sponsored) video for “No Light, No Light” … now, she’s back, with an equally ethereal (and vaguely “Twilight”-endorsed) new clip, for “Never Let Me Go.” The video features Flo and Twilighter Jamie Campbell Bower exchanging smoldering glances — and subsequently cavorting — at an eerie ice rink (couples’ skate!), all while Welch slowly melts away into a viscous pool of fluid. Helmed by director/DJ Tabitha Denholm, who previously directed Florence’s “Cosmic Love” and “Rabbit Heart” videos, “Never Let Me Go” is certainly visually arresting, but it also works on another level: Namely, it perfectly (and artfully) captures the experience of literally melting in the presence of a lover, the feeling of casting abandon to the wind and giving yourself away truly and completely. Or something like that. Of course, given the cavernous, darkly lit spaces the video inhabits, it’s also a nice fit to the song’s voluminous, dream-like sonics. Truly, a skating rink hasn’t looked this moody since, well, ever — to the point where you can practically feel the chill running its way up Welch’s stockings. And as for Campbell Bower, well, he’s plenty icy too, embracing Welch, planting a plaintive kiss on her head but remaining eternally detached. In a telling moment, he actually watches Welch disintegrate, which certainly hints at his true feelings for her. Call it love on ice. Or a darkly spiritual rumination on the politics of figure skating. Either way, with “Never Let Me Go,” Welch definitely adds to her impressive list of eye-catching clips, emotes and wails and flails, and gives skating its biggest artistic bump since Jay and Kanye’s “N—as in Paris.” It’s chillingly effective, and just as beautiful, too. Kirk Cameron Defends Anti-Gay Views, Touts "Life’s Mission to Love All People"

Under fire for his anti-gay comments on Piers Morgan Tonight, former Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron defended himself in a Facebook post Tuesday. His tone was less combative and his comments much better-worded, but Kirk did not apologize for his beliefs, or the manner in which he voiced them. In fact, Cameron criticized the media and those contributing to the backlash, defending principles he stands for and the right to express them publicly. The actor defended his appearance on CNN (below) this way: Kirk Cameron on Gay Marriage “During the CNN interview, I was asked to express my views about homosexuality, gay marriage, and abortion. While that was not the agreed-upon purpose of the interview, I was pleased to answer Piers’ questions as honestly as I could. “To some, my responses were not sufficiently ‘loving’ toward the gay community. I can only say that it is my life’s mission to love all people, and I expressed the same views clearly and emphatically expressed throughout Judeo-Christian scriptures.” “As a Bible believing Christian, I could not have answered any other way.” “I’ve been encouraged by the support of many friends (including gay friends, incidentally) in the wake of condemnation by some political advocacy groups.” “In the case of one of my gay friends, we regularly talk and have healthy and respectful debate. We learn from each other, and serve others alongside one another.” “I thank God for all of my friends… even when they hold very different views on issues of faith and morality. I do not, however, believe that the right way to advance our views is to resort to name-calling and personal attacks, as some have done to me.” “I also believe that freedom of speech and freedom of religion go hand-in-hand in America. I should be able to express moral views on social issues – especially those that have been the underpinning of Western civilization for 2,000 years – without being slandered, accused of hate speech, and told from those who preach ‘tolerance’ that I need to either bend my beliefs to their moral standards or be silent when I’m in the public square.” “I hope more than a few people could see the large volume of secularist morality being imposed on me. In any society that is governed by the rule of law, some form of morality is always imposed. It’s inescapable.” “But it is also a complicated subject, and that is why I believe we need to learn how to debate these things with greater love and respect.” GLAAD was unsatisfied with the star’s explanation and offered its own response: “Saying that gay people are ‘detrimental to civilization’ might be ‘loving’ in Kirk Cameron’s mind, but it’s gay youth and victims of bullying who truly suffer from adults like Cameron who espouse these ideas,” said senior director Herndon Graddick. Cameron blasted gay marriage and homosexuality for being “destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization” and said if one if his sons told him he was gay, he would encourage him to “work through” those “issues.” What do you think? Is Kirk out of line? Or is he right on the money? Is there a double standard – at least in how certain views are treated by the media?

Rush Limbaugh Losing Sponsors Over Sandra Fluke "Slut" Remarks

Rush Limbaugh is literally paying for the comments he made this week about Sandra Fluke. On Thursday, the Georgetown University Law School student – who has been a vocal supporter of the Obama administration’s decision to require insurance companies, even those used by religiously-affiliated employers, to cover the cost of contraception – was denied a chance to speak at a House Oversight and Government Reform hearing on religious liberty and birth control. Rush Limbaugh Goes Off on Birth Control, Sandra Fluke She proceeded, though, to take part in a press conference in which Fluke told the story of a friend who was prescribed birth control to deal with ovarian cysts; could not afford the cost when school insurance refused to pay for it; and has since suffered grave medical consequences as a result. Fluke also said the price of birth control in general can be thousands a year. Limbaugh’s response? He referred to Fluke as a “slut” and a “prostitute” and added: “If we’re going to pay for your contraceptives and thus pay for you to have sex, we want something for it. We want you to post the videos online so we can all watch.” Limbaugh said that her speech made it clear “she’s having so much sex she can’t pay for it, and we should.” ( NOTE TO RUSH : That’s not how birth control works. You don’t pop a pill each time you have intercourse.) The issue has since taken on national prominence, with President Obama even calling Fluke and telling her her parents ought to be proud of her actions. And now the scandal has hit the Internet. The hashtag #BoycottRush has spread around Twitter and two Facebook pages calling for a boycott have garnered more than 18,000 and 6,000 Likes by this morning. Moreover, nine companies – including Legal Zoom, Citrix Success, Heart and Body Extract, AutoZone and Quicken Loans – have pulled ads from Limbaugh’s show. Where do you stand on this issue? Should Limbaugh have referred to the student as a “slut?

Nicki Sterling on Courtney Robertson Wedding Dress Pics: Shocking!

Courtney Robertson, the controversial finalist on The Bachelor, has shocked more than just fans by trying on wedding dresses in Beverly Hills on Wednesday. Nicki Sterling, who was eliminated this week, is beside herself as well. Sterling is “positively shocked” by the photos, and the implication that Robertson, a season-long source of Bachelor drama will get Ben Flajnik’s final rose. “I’d have to chew on that for a while,” Sterling tells People . “I don’t even know. I’m kind of shocked right now. I’m sorry, wow, my mouth is open right now.” There’s always the possibility that the attention-loving Courtney Robertson was merely putting on a publicity stunt of sorts. Or maybe she was “modeling”! “I would hope and pray that is not the case,” Sterling says of a possible stunt by Court. “There are no words to describe how horrible that would be.” “I mean, somebody’s heart is on the line.” “Not just somebody’s, but Ben who I care deeply about. I cannot believe anybody – even as manipulative as Courtney – would take it that far. I would hope not.” Only time (and perhaps some more hinting on Court’s part, or The Bachelor spoilers if you’re into that sort of thing and believe them) will tell.

Bomb Squad Called to Rush Limbaugh’s House After Suspicious Package Arrives

The Palm Beach County Sherriff’s Office bomb squad was dispatched to Rush Limbaugh’s Florida home after a suspicious package showed up in his mail. Apparently wires were visible – never a good sign- and Limbaugh’s security team called authorities . Fortunately, they discovered nothing harmful after all. The suspect package sent to the talk radio mogul turned out to be an electronic plaque having to do with Abraham Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth. Yes, we’re serious, and have no more details, sorry. The package, whatever it was, was Limbaugh by a fan in Pennsylvania for a business-opportunity-related purpose, according to the Palm Beach Police. No charges will be filed against the sender, who was very apologetic after the incident played out, reports say, because no crime has been committed. Whether or not Limbaugh wants anything to do with the package, which was deemed safe to open, is up to him. Maybe he’ll talk about it on air today.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver: In Therapy, Possibly Reconciling?!

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver are reportedly in couples therapy in a bid to save their marriage. Can California’s former first couple pull it off? The pair, who split in 2011 after news broke that Arnold fathered a secret child with their housekeeper Mildred Patricia Baena , has been married 26 years. Apparently that’s more than reason enough for the couple to make a last-ditch effort to save their marriage, according to Thursday’s New York Post . Sources told the Post that the devoutly Catholic Shriver can’t bear the thought of divorce, while The Terminator star realizes the gravity of his mistake. “Arnold is desperate to save the marriage; he and Maria are having counseling to work through their issues to get back together,” a friend told the paper. “Maria is a devout Catholic and doesn’t believe in divorce, but is still struggling with the profound heartbreak and humiliation she endured by him.” “He is promising the moon and telling Maria he has completely changed his ways. All of Maria’s friends are warning her to be careful, saying he’ll never change.” “Arnold is going all out to win her back, mostly because he feels bad and he can’t live without her, and partly because he has no political clout without her.” “Winning her back would be the best way to show the world he has been forgiven for his transgressions,” said the supposed insider to the Post . Think they’ll get back together? Should they?

Bill Maher Donates $1M to Pro-Obama Super PAC

Comedian Bill Maher announced during a comedy special Thursday night that he would donate $1 million to the pro-Obama Priorities USA Action Super PAC. The host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher dropped the (money) bomb at the end of “CrazyStupidPolitics,” streamed live on Yahoo. He said the following: “I would like tonight to announce a donation to the Obama super PAC, which has the very unfortunate tongue-twister name Priority [sic] USA Action.” “I know, it was named by Borat,” Maher said. “But tonight, I would like to give that PAC one million dollars,” prompting cheers from the audience. The donation, manifested onstage in the form of one of those oversized checks, provides a significant boost to the pro-Obama Super PAC’s coffers. The group raised less than $59,000 in the month of January and $4.4 million overall … not even that much more than the Colbert Super PAC really. Super PACs can raise unlimited amounts of cash to support political causes, but are not permitted to coordinate their activities with candidates they favor. Bill Maher said that a 2012 Obama victory was “worth a million dollars” and described the donation as

Mitt Romney Pretends to Love Michigan

Cyborg Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is campaigning in Michigan ahead of Tuesday’s primary, and boy, does he just love everything about that state! Mitt’s pandering speech last week was remarkable in how forced it sounded, even by his standards, as the Michigan native tried to convince residents he is one of them. It was a performance reminiscent of Steve Carell in Anchorman , when Will Ferrell’s Ron Burgundy asks, “Are you just naming things you see and saying you love them?” Watch a mashup of that scene and Romney’s press conference below: Mitt Romney Loves Michigan So Hard The trees are the right height. Take note, Michigan Department of Tourism. There’s your new tagline if ever we’ve heard one. “Pure Michigan” was so 2011.
