On Today: Matt Lauer Fails to Convince Republican to Go Obama’s Way and Raise Taxes

NBC's Matt Lauer, on Tuesday's Today show, invited on soon to be House Majority Leader Eric Cantor on to discuss today's meeting of Republican congressional leaders with Barack Obama, and in the process tried to force Cantor to move in the President's direction on raising taxes. The Today co-anchor opened the conversation by wondering if Cantor was going into the meeting in the mood for “compromise or confrontation” and then quickly brought up the issue of extending the Bush era tax cuts as he pressed: “Could you not see possibly raising taxes just a little bit?” on those making over $250,000 a year. Cantor responded that job growth and tax cuts were intertwined as he educated Lauer: “We want to make sure that we're doing everything to get people back to work right now and that means we've got to ensure that taxes don't go up on anybody, especially on the small businesses that we're expecting to create jobs so we can finally bring the unemployment down.” read more

Arianna: There’s the Super-Rich, and Then ‘The Rest of Us’

The Toronto Globe and Mail profiled Arianna Huffington as she prepares to keynote the Canada's Most Famous Women summit, and D.C.-based writer Konrad Yakabuski underlines that the Huffington Post founder is mysteriously aligning herself outside the bubble of the super-rich with her book Third World America: Ms. Huffington's 13th book is a cri de coeur bemoaning the evisceration of the U.S. middle class and America's slide toward Third World status. As she describes it to me, “that's really a country where there are the super-rich, who live behind gates with guards protecting their kids from kidnapping, and the rest of us.” The rest of us? read more

Krauthammer Urges Prosecution of WikiLeaks’ Journalistic Collaborators

The U.S. government “ought to speak about the enablers in the American journalistic community” who have cooperated with WikiLeaks, syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer urged on Monday’s night’s Special Report on FNC, recommending that if you “collaborate” with WikiLeaks, then “we are going to look into possible prosecution.” read more

NYT Drops ClimateGate-era Ethics Qualms, Publishes Scores of WikiLeaks Docs

The New York Times has taken an admirable stand on the potentially-criminal release of diplomatic cables by the online “whistleblowers” at WikiLeaks. Said one Times reporter: “The documents appear to have been acquired illegally and contain all manner of private information and statements that were never intended for the public eye, so they won't be posted here.” Oh, wait. That wasn't in reference to the WikiLeaks documents. That was the Times's former environmental blogger Andy Revkin discussing the so-called ClimateGate emails . The Times has, in fact, posted a number of American diplomatic documents obtained illegally by WikiLeaks, and containing massive amounts of sensitive diplomatic communications. And so we get another glimpse of the amazing depths of the Gray Lady's hypocrisy. read more

Three Green Building Lawyer Bloggers Predict The Next Big Thing

Stephen Del Percio, Lloyd Alter, Shari Shapiro, Chris Cheatham I follow the three leading bloggers on green building law closely; they make complicated and important issues affecting green building comprehensible. When I saw that they were all on a panel together at Greenbuild, I had to attend and meet them in person, and hear their responses to the question “What’s the Next Big Challenge in Green Building Law?” Although all three are great at making complex issues understandable to non-legal types, I still could not understand my notes well enough to do a post, so I asked them all to look into their crystal ball and send me their… Read the full story on TreeHugger

To Letterman’s Annoyance, His Mom Won’t Blame Global Warming for Warm Days in Indianapolis

As the long holiday weekend comes to an end, catching up with a humorous, seemingly spontaneous, moment on the last fresh Late Show before Thanksgiving. David Letterman is a big believer in cataclysmic predictions about global warming, but on Wednesday’s program his mom, Dorothy, rejected his proposition that global warming was to blame for some unseasonably warm days in Indianapolis — prompting her disappointed son to shake his head in disapproval. Dorothy, better known as “Dave’s mom,” appears annually from her kitchen in suburban Indianapolis to let her son guess the types of pies she’s baked for Thanksgiving. This year, the 89-year-old remarked “it's been unseasonably warm,” leading her son to assert “that's that climate change. It's the global warming . You know that, mom? Do you believe in the climate change, in the global warming?” To which, Dorothy Letterman innocently responded: “Not really.” read more

WaPo Promotes ‘DREAM Act’ for Sympathetic ‘Undocumented Youths’

Liberal Democrats would like to use the lame-duck session of Congress to squeeze out passage of the “DREAM Act” to provide a “path” for citizenship to illegal-alien students. So The Washington Post ordered up another round of sympathetic press-release coverage for Sunday's paper with the tableau of a Thanksgiving dinner, complete with a beautiful “exemplary student” named Anngie Gutierrez who wants to be a medical examiner. The headline was “Undocumented youths chasing a dream.” The story used the favored liberal word “undocumented” seven times (including headlines and captions). Reporter Shankar Vedantam relayed: Gutierrez attended Thanksgiving dinner last week at the home of one of her high school teachers, Elias Vlanton. A group called United We Dream organized 300 to 500 events where DREAM Act-eligible students could share Thanksgiving dinner with citizens – and also perform various acts of service – according to Jose Luis Marantes, a senior organizer at the group. read more

NPR: Obama’s Fat Lip Could Improve Image With Jong Il, Ahmadinejad and Putin

It appears that at NPR, even a fat lip for the President is to be heralded as a crowning achievement furthering his prestige and street cred when dealing with despots like Kim Jong Il and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. According to Scott Simon, a president with a “gnarly, vivid scar” might even be able to intimidate China's rulers into halting their currency manipulation (audio follows with partial transcript and commentary): read more
