Deena Brings ‘A Whole Bunch Of Vocabulary’ To ‘Jersey Shore’

Rookie explains her additions to the ‘Shore’ lexicon, including ‘backpack’ and ‘stepstool.’ By By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker, with reporting by Jim Cantiello “Jersey Shore” star Deena Nicole Cortese Photo: MTV News In its first two seasons, MTV’s “Jersey Shore” introduced America to countless new words and expressions that have made a lasting impression on pop culture, including “GTL,” “grenades” and “T-shirt time.” Now, with the addition of castmember Deena Nicole Cortese , fans of the show can expect a brand-new round of crazy terminology and phrases. The 23-year-old recently sat down with MTV News and promised to bring “a whole bunch of vocabulary” to the show this season. In Thursday night’s episode, Deena called Sammi Sweetheart a “backpack” because of how she always clings to Ronnie. She told MTV News “backpack” can also be used to describe “one of the … guys that follow me around the club and stuff.” As she was a bit slap-happy on her first night with the cast, Deena used herself as an example of a “slaptard,” which she defined as a “slappy” girl. “I was a complete slaptard the first night,” she said. “I was, like, the biggest slaptard ever.” Deena also dished on one of the harsher terms she has added to the extensive “Jersey Shore” lexicon. “This is horrible,” she admitted, “but you know when you, like, meet a girl but her friend’s hotter? You wanna get in with the hotter girl, so you kind of befriend the not-so-pretty girl?” Deena would consider the not-so-pretty girl in this scenario to be a “stepstool.” “It’s horrible,” she giggled. “But, I mean, it’s real life. It happens in real life.” What’s your favorite “Jersey Shore” phrase? Let us know in the comments! Don’t miss “Jersey Shore,” airing Thursday nights at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. Matthew Morrison Calls Lindsay Lohan ‘Fair Game’ For ‘Glee’ Jabs

‘I don’t think anyone gets away from the ‘Glee’ scathing,’ Morrison tells ‘Access Hollywood’ about recent episode’s Lohan ribbing. By James Dinh Matthew Morrison Photo: Jemal Countess/Getty Images Lindsay Lohan’s trials and tribulations have landed the starlet at the center of sideswipe jokes and as inspiration for future films. While the actress may not be too pleased with the wisecracking and mockery, “Glee” star Matthew Morrison thinks the 24-year-old actress should lighten up a bit. “Access Hollywood” recently caught up with the “Glee” actor, who admitted that his show’s recent Lohan sideswipe is just another instance of the series’ usual humor, which often intertwines pop culture references. “You know, when it comes to ‘Glee,’ I think everyone is fair game,” Morrison told host Maria Menounos. “We poke fun at ourselves all the time. I don’t think anyone really gets away from the ‘Glee’ scathing.” He then added, “Sorry Lindsay.” Just last month, Lohan’s mother, Dina, slammed the aforementioned “Glee” episode, which featured guest star Gwyneth Paltrow’s character, Holly Holliday, poking fun at the troubled star. During the scene, Holliday gives a lecture in which she says, “Lindsey [sic] Lohan is totally crazy, right?” in Spanish. The ridicule continues when Holliday quizzes the class on numbers by asking, “How many times has Lindsay Lohan been to rehab?” Dina told Radar Online that her daughter was deeply hurt by the show and Paltrow’s participation in it. “Lindsay is so upset with Gwyneth,” Dina said. “Lindsay was watching it while in [the] Betty Ford [rehab center], then she called me and was upset and said, ‘Why did she have to do that?’ We are the first to make fun of ourselves in our family. And Lindsay has even done ‘SNL’ a few times, but Gwyneth went overboard and it was unnecessary.” While Morrison didn’t express too much sympathy for Lohan, he did gush about Katie Couric’s guest-starring role on the highly anticipated post-Super Bowl episode of “Glee.” When asked about the news anchor’s upcoming appearance, the “Glee” star described working with Couric as “awesome.” He then shared, “We did this impromptu dance together. She showed me this thing called the pretzel,” before demonstrating the maneuver to Menounos. Morrison revealed that Couric plays herself on the episode and makes a visit to McKinley High to interview Sue Sylvester (played by Jane Lynch) as part of a “20 Biggest Losers of the Year” assignment. “I can’t give away too much because there’s so many amazing lines that Jane has in that scene,” he explained. “The last one is the best, but I can’t say it. But yeah, [Couric] played herself. She was so much fun. I love her. She’s such a great energy.” Do you think Lindsay has a right to get upset over the “Glee” jabs? Celebrity of the Year Finalist #3: Miley Cyrus!

With 2010 drawing to a close, it is with much pride that THG unveils its 10 finalists for its prestigious, Fourth Annual Celebrity of the Year award. These stars all gave us their best, their worst, their nude pics (sometimes) and their scandals (often). This month, THG honors that greatness. After the Jersey Shore cast fist-pumped its way to #4 , we present one of our most polarizing figures at #3 … Miley Cyrus! Perhaps more than any celebrity we cover, 2010 was a year of ups and downs for Miley, lows and highs ( literally! ). It began with the official announcement that Cyrus would be saying farewell to the role of Hannah Montana, and it ended with a bong-smoking controversy that epitomized the lengths this star had gone to over the past 12 months to prove she was transforming into an adult artist. In between, Miley… … dated Liam Hemsworth multiple times. … sang a duet with Bret Michaels. … hosted the 2010 MuchMusic Video Awards. … got slammed by critics for her portrayal in The Last Song. … made out with a female dancer to prove her maturity. … feuded with Perez Hilton over that blogger being an idiot . … rarely wore pants. … suffered through her parents’ divorce. … turned 18. As you can tell, it was a year of starring roles and scandalous actions for Miley Cyrus. Ardent supporters stuck by her side, arguing that she was simply growing up as a person and a celebrity. Critics, meanwhile, crushed the star for her misguided decisions, coming down on her for abandoning a young fan base and trying too hard to prove she was evolving. Where do you stand? It’s a question we’ve asked often and will likely continue to do so. This divisiveness is a significant reasons why Miley had such an impact on pop culture in 2010.

Akon, Jason Derulo Make 2010 The Year Of The Self-Referential Song

Lady Gaga, Janet Jackson, Eminem also among the artists who have shouted out their own names in their tunes this year. By Jocelyn Vena Akon Photo: Matt Jelonek/ Getty Images This past weekend on “Saturday Night Live,” Akon joined the Lonely Island guys in a hilarious video for a new song called “I Just Had Sex,” in which the singer proudly sings his own name, as well as the group’s. , meanwhile also got self-referential at the VMAs, when she Auto-Tuned her way through a pre-taped bit with Best New Artist nominee Jason Derulo. And, to be fair, we here at MTV News have been obsessed with pop stars singing their own names in songs for the bulk of 2010, prompted by Derulo’s epic use of the device in several of his hits. Folks like Derulo, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj (“Right Thru Me”), Kanye West (“Dark Fantasy”) and, obviously, Akon join a list of two decades’ worth of pop artists who have taken it upon themselves to brand their tracks with their own names. In the ’80s, stars like Janet Jackson, Beastie Boys and New Kids on the Block proudly proclaimed who they were in their songs. Moving into the ’90s, “TRL” staples such as the Backstreet Boys, Jennifer Lopez, Kid Rock and Eminem all blasted their monikers on their tracks, letting fans know just who was singing or rapping through hits like Rock’s “Bawitdaba” and BSB’s “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).” As the new millennium approached and the musical landscape became more and more flooded with pop stars, it became a regular practice, with everyone from Ciara to M.I.A. to Fergie to Beyonc

2010 In 60 Seconds: Comebacks By Kanye, Eminem, Betty White And More

MTV News’ pop-culture expert Jim Cantiello takes a look back at the year that was: all in a minute. By James Montgomery Kanye West Photo: Jean Baptiste Lacroix/ WireImage Well, 2010 is nearly in the books, and if you’re a fan of octogenarians on the comeback trail, “California Gurls” gone wild and swoop-haired Canadian teenagers, congratulations on the best year of your life! Yes, it was quite a ride … Kanye West returned to top form, Eminem recaptured his old magic, Taylor Swift moved a million, Rihanna proved to be unstoppable, Katy Perry proved the doubters wrong and Ke$ha, well, she just proved to be Ke$ha. Lady Gaga dared to speak out, Weezy went away, and a host of new stars — everyone from Drake to Justin Bieber to Willow Smith — stepped up to the plate. In pop culture, we were mesmerized by the exploits of everyone from Amber Portwood to Zac Efron, obsessed with the likes of Antoine Dobson and the “Pants on the Floor” guy, cheered on Betty White and vilified Mel Gibson (and probably Miley, too). We watched as our favorite couples went their separate ways, said goodbye to “Lost,” “The Hills” and Jay Leno (whom we then said hello to all over again), and went absolutely crazy for the iPad. Oh, and everything in the universe was made in 3-D. And all of that was just the tip of a rather sizeable iceberg. It’s pretty difficult to sum up 2010 in any way, so let’s just say it was the “most” year in recent memory. The most stars, the most scandals, the most use of the word “vuvuzela.” There were more shake-ups, breakups and comebacks than we can even remember … so it’s a good thing we’ve got MTV News’ pop culture expert Jim Cantiello to do it for us. Here’s his look back on the year that was … in 60 seconds, of course. Ready? Go. Related Videos 2010 In 60 Seconds Related Artists Kanye West Eminem
