Chris Hayes Apologizes For Criticism of Calling Fallen Soldiers "Heroes"

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes sparked major controversy and debate when he said that he felt uncomfortable using the word “hero ” for members of the U.S. military. Hayes’ point was that the word is inadvertently used to start more potentially unjust wars – not unreasonable – but now says his own word choice was poor. After speaking with a former Marine whose job it was to notify families of the death of soldiers, he said that while he means no disrespect to those who serve us all, the word “seems to be rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war.” Chris Hayes Asks: Are Military Men Heroes? Hayes also said that, on the flip side, it is “noble” to join the military. While a “liberal caricature” like himself would not truly understand “submitting so totally to what the electorate or people in power are going to decide about using your body,” Hayes conceded, he saw valor in it. Nevertheless, Hayes’ words, on Memorial Day of all days, caused a predictable furor with some. He issued a statement Monday apologizing for his comments: In discussing the uses of the word “hero” to describe those members of the armed forces who have given their lives, I don’t think I lived up to the standards of rigor, respect and empathy for those affected by the issues we discuss that I’ve set for myself. I am deeply sorry for that . As many have rightly pointed out, it’s very easy for me, a TV host, to opine about the people who fight our wars, having never dodged a bullet or guarded a post or walked a mile in their boots. Of course, that is true of the overwhelming majority of our nation’s citizens as a whole. One of the points made during Sunday’s show was just how removed most Americans are from the wars we fight, how small a percentage of our population is asked to shoulder the entire burden and how easy it becomes to never read the names of those who are wounded and fight and die, to not ask questions about the direction of our strategy in Afghanistan, and to assuage our own collective guilt about this disconnect with a pro-forma ritual that we observe briefly before returning to our barbecues. But in seeking to discuss the civilian-military divide and the social distance between those who fight and those who don’t, I ended up reinforcing it, conforming to a stereotype of a removed pundit whose views are not anchored in the very real and very wrenching experience of this long decade of war. And for that I am truly sorry .

AnnaLynne McCord in a Tight Black Dress of the Day

Annalynne McCord is attending some event with her relatively hard, very useless, hardly relevant, but somehow invited to shitty Hollywood Events, because she fucked her way onto the worst show on TV, the kind of show that shouldn’t fucking exist, but does despite all logic….A celebrity I expect to fade out, and while fades and her eagerness to keep what she already built, will come the nudity and sex tapes that she should already have, but doesn’t, because things haven’t got that bleak for her yet…but if my confidence in her talent is accurate, and my amazement she’s made it this far is right and a common feeling to the 2 percent of the population who knows who she is….then it is safe to say it is coming…. Here’s her ass in a black dress.

Hoy In Mi Gente News: White Population Growing Because More Latinos Check White On Census

Damn the ‘Tino’s are selling out. SMH. The Ethnicity vs. Race issue is rearing up again thanks to the latest census data which shows whites are up by 6% thanks to Latinos who identify as such. The white population in the U.S. is growing – thanks to Hispanics. So say the latest census figures, which found a big jump in the number of Hispanics who listed themselves as white on the 2010 census forms. Those forms specifically stated that Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race. The result was a sudden six percent increase in white Americans. “It really surprises me, that is a significant shift,” said Claudio Remeseira, a Columbia University professor and editor of “Hispanic New York: A Sourcebook.” “In general, most Latinos tend to think of themselves as white. But the issue of how Latinos identify themselves by race has always been complicated.” For example, most Dominican immigrants – even dark-skinned Dominicans – would say they are white “because they have historically perceived themselves as not black” like their neighbors in Haiti, Remeseira said. In all, the number of people in the “white alone” category jumped by 12.1 million over the last decade to 223.6 million, the census showed. Whites now represent 72% of the U.S. population and account for nearly half of the total population increase since 2000. Take out the Hispanics, however, and whites account for 64% of the population, according to the figures. They were 69% of the population just a decade ago. Hispanics continue to be the nation’s fastest growing group. The percentage that identified themselves as white jumped in the past decade from 48% to 53%. The portion that marked “some other race” dropped from 42% to 37%. Also, for the first time, the largest group of multiracial Americans are like President Obama – half black, half white. “There is no question that racial lines are blurring in the United States, said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution. “Strong gains in interracial marriages and higher mixed-race identification among youth suggest that past racial categories will need to be radically changed or even dispensed with in the next two or three decades.” This race business is so tricky isn’t it? And crazy how the Haiti vs. DR issue immediately comes up. Do you see nothing wrong with Latinos identifying as White, or do you think it’s just plain ol’ denial? Source

Worst New Home Market Ever; AP’s Crutsinger Downplays, Lowers the Recovery Bar

There are many annoying aspects of the sea change in media coverage of the economy since Barack Obama became president. At or near the top of the list is how the business press has downplayed the unprecedented housing industry disaster, while lowering the bar that will supposedly represent a real recovery to ridiculous levels. According the the Census Bureau ( 12-page PDF ), 23,000 new homes were sold nationwide in October. That figure ties August 2010 and December 1966 (when the population was 35% smaller) for is the lowest single month since records have been kept. More extensive evidence of how bad things are will come after the jump. On Wednesday , the Associated Press's Martin Crutsinger provided as good an example as any of the press template for housing coverage — acknowledge that, yes, things are really bad; give readers an absurdly low benchmark for what would represent real improvement and how long it should take to get there; locate some “expert” to say it's really not all that bad; and find some kind of anecdote somewhere, anywhere, that will leave the impression that things might somehow be getting better: read more

Australia and U.S. top list of carbon emitters

The United Arab Emirates, Australia and the United States have the worst overall records for emitting greenhouse gases, according to an index published on Wednesday combining current and historic emissions. The top of the 183-nation ranking, compiled by British consultancy Maplecroft, was dominated by rich countries and OPEC members. It said it aimed to alert investors to countries vulnerable if U.N.-led climate talks ever agreed wider penalties on carbon. The ranking of carbon dioxide emissions from energy use placed the UAE top, largely because of a sharp rise in emissions in recent years linked to desalination plants in an economy almost entirely dependent on fossil fuels. “Desalination is a positive way to address water security but high emissions underline the need to find more energy-efficient innovations,” Maplecroft said in a statement. Australia, dependent on coal, was second ahead of the United States, by far the biggest cumulative emitter since 1900 and now the number two national emitter behind China. Both Australians and Americans have high per capita emissions. They were trailed by Canada, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Russia, Belgium and Kazakhstan in the top 10. The index gave a 50 percent weighting to current per capita emissions of greenhouse gases, 25 percent to total national emissions and the remaining 25 percent to cumulative historic emissions. Annual U.N. climate talks will take place in the Caribbean resort of Cancun, Mexico, from November 29 to December 10. A treaty to limit emissions is out of reach for 2010 as part of efforts to slow rising temperatures which the U.N. panel of climate scientists says will lead to more droughts, heat waves, mudslides, floods and rising seas. “As the world moves toward a low carbon economy, more rigorous environmental policies may leave companies exposed to costly operating expenses and new investment requirements,” said Maplecroft's head of maps and indices, Fiona Place. China was 26th in the index. Its per capita emissions from a population of 1.3 billion are a fraction of those of industrialized countries such as the United States or Australia. African countries with low emissions were bottom of the list. Chad, where only about 2 percent of the population have access to electricity, was last in 183rd place. added by: JanforGore

Numbers of Potential Treehuggers Decline As US Birth Rates Drop

photo via flickr Chalk it up to eco-awareness, The Great Recession, or increased availability of pregnancy prevention methods but people in the US are having fewer kids. News stats from the National Center for Health Statistics show that for 1,000 people in the US, there are 13.5 births. That’s down from 14.3 in 2007, and around 30 in early part of the 20th century The question is: Is this good green news or just another statistic that amazes for a minute but carries no consequence?… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Annalynne McCord Crying for Attention in her Bikini of the Day

It’s pretty obvious when someone is crying for attention. It usually happens when everyone is just minding their own business, sitting by the pool, or at their tables, and one idiot comes along with a hired photographer, making noise, dancing around, trying to look wild and crazy to get people to look at her and notice her, when 99 percent of the population has no fucking idea who this cunt is. Seriously, ask your neighbor, ask your dad, ask your boss, ask any normal person and they will say “who”….so I guess she’s got more stuntin’ to do…but unfortunately I think her weird camel looking face may work against her tight little bikini body….but there’s always sex-tape potential….that’s every bitch’s back-up plan…

Sharon Stone Crying in Public of the Day

I know as well as you do that Sharon Stone is not hot anymore. I just have a thing for bitches who cry in public, whether they are hot or not. I just like seeing some kind of crazy acting crazy….whether the tears are justified by the death in her family, or maybe further rejection from another casting director telling her she’s too old to work, or if she just looked at her haggard face in the mirror and got scared, or if she is just going through menopause….. I just like seeing a bitch lose her fucking mind cuz I know it’s probably over something totally insignificant, cuz bitches don’t know how to differentiate what is considered a real issue, or just their own over-reacting over nothing…. I do however care that when the crazy person in question is Sharon Stone and she’s wearing a short skirt and her legs are uncrossed and her career is pretty much backed into the fucking corner and sucking, she should try to re-visit her prime. So here she is emotionally unstable and not showing pussy. Pics via Fame

Big Mammals Disappearing in Africa’s National Parks

As if the dramatic decline in some big cat populations over the last two decades wasn’t bad enough, it turns out that they’re not the only mammals struggling to survive on the African plains. Many animals considered staples of the savannah, like zebras, elephants, giraffes, and rhinos, too, are dwindling in numbers — with African national parks seeing nearly a 60 percent drop in the population of many big mammals. At this rate, soon folks on
