Harry Potter Is Best Hero At MTV Movie Awards

Boy wizard was in a heated battle with ‘Hunger Games’ heroine Katniss Everdeen in MTV’s first social-voting category. By Terri Schwartz Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” Photo: Warner Bros. He was a real human being and a real hero. Harry Potter came, he saw and he conquered tonight at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards . The Boy Who Lived now enters the prestigious Best Hero ranks that, at this point, only include Christian Bale’s Batman from “Batman Begins.” Harry Potter came out on top after a heated battle against Katniss Everdeen that totally eclipsed the category’s other three contenders: Thor, Captain America and “21 Jump Street” cop Jenko. At least “Harry Potter” toppled two Avengers at the Movie Awards, since the Marvel superhero collective just beat out “Potter” to be the third-highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide. We get the distinct pleasure of knowing that fans think Harry Potter is a better hero than an all-American supersoldier and a Norse god. Though Best Hero was a Movie Awards category back in 2006 when Bale won, this is the first year it was chosen by fans on Twitter. The first-ever social voting category had Twitter users support their favorite hero by sending tweets instead of casting their votes on the . That’s two Golden Popcorns won, four lost and one to go for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” which was nominated a grand total of seven times at this year’s MTV Movie Awards. “Potter” is up against “The Hunger Games,” “Bridesmaids,” “The Help” and “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” for Movie of the Year, and it’s anyone’s guess as to which film will take that one home. We know that seven is a meaningful number in the “Harry Potter” universe, with seven Horcruxes, seven years at Hogwarts and seven books. Heck, Harry Potter was even born in July! That bodes well for the movie’s Movie Awards chances this year. This is the fourth Golden Popcorn the “Harry Potter” series has ever won. Tom Felton has had the honor of winning Best Villain the past two years, and both were fairly memorable experiences. First Mark Wahlberg interrupted his acceptance speech , and then Dave Grohl busted in on his post-win interview . Emma Watson accepted the award for Best Cast only minutes before the series’ titular character won Best Hero. The 2012 MTV Movie Awards are officially under way! ‘Harry Potter’ Faces Final Shot At MTV Movie Awards Glory

‘Deathly Hallows, Part 2,’ with six nominations, is up against ‘Twilight’ and ‘Hunger Games’ for Movie of the Year. By Josh Wigler Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” Photo: Warner Bros. “The Boy Who Lived, come to thrive?” That could well be the case at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards . Just as Harry Potter bravely walked through the Forbidden Forest to meet his maker at Voldemort’s hands, so too does Team Potter approach its final chance at Golden Popcorn glory come the June 3 broadcast. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” the eighth and last film in the Warner Bros. fantasy series, has scored six nominations, including nods for Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, a Best Kiss nomination for Watson and Rupert Grint, and a coveted shot at Movie of the Year. Will this be the year “Potter” finally brings that top award home? With a big target out of the way, it just might be. For years at the Movie Awards, magic has succumbed to bloodsucking in the battle between “Potter” and “Twilight.” But with “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” netting only two nominations this year — one for Movie of the Year, another for Best Kiss — the path is considerably clearer for the boy wizard and his companions to make a run at the six awards for which it’s nominated. With a reduced “Twilight” presence at this year’s show, perhaps the odds are in Harry’s favor, to borrow a phrase from another fan-backed franchise. Then again, besting that franchise — “The Hunger Games,” if you’re one of two people who didn’t catch the reference — could prove trickier than destroying one of He Who Must Not Be Named’s Horcruxes for “Potter” fans. Breaking past $600 million at the global box office, “Hunger Games” brings both commercial and critical firepower to this particular race, leading the Movie Awards nominations with eight. The Jennifer Lawrence-led film managed second place during the MTV Movie Brawl 2012, scoring 1.7 million votes. “Potter” wasn’t eligible for that competition, of course, but it’s no slouch in the tournament department: Last year,

‘Harry Potter’ Encyclopedia In The Works

J.K. Rowling announces she will donate all royalties to charity. By Fallon Prinzivalli Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” Photo: Warner Bros. Last week, fans of J.K. Rowling were treated to the title and release date of the “Harry Potter” author’s new novel, “The Casual Vacancy.” This week is sure to have fans buzzing again as it brings the news that she’s started working on a “Harry Potter” encyclopedia. Rowling answered a fan question regarding the highly anticipated Potter lexicon on the “frequently asked questions and rumours” page of her website. “For a long time I have been promising an encyclopaedia of Harry’s world, and I have started work on this now — some of it forms the new content in Pottermore. It is likely to be a time-consuming job, but when finished I shall donate all royalties to charity.” Back in 2008, Rowling and Warner Brothers won a lawsuit against Steve Vander Ark, the publisher of the Harry Potter Lexicon, who attempted to release a book along the same lines. Rowling also addressed the biggest burning fan question of all on her website: Will there ever be another “Harry Potter” novel? “I have always refused to say ‘never’ to this question,” the British author wrote, “because I think it would be foolish to rule out something I might want to do in a few years’ time. However, I have no immediate plans to write another Harry Potter novel, and I do think that I have rounded off Harry’s story in seven published books.” With the sheer volume of a project like the Harry Potter encyclopedia, it’s unlikely it will be available anytime soon. But Rowling’s first adult novel, “The Casual Vacancy,” is set to be released on September 27, 2012. The novel follows a quaint town in the wake of a death that leaves an empty seat on the parish council. Despite appearances, the town isn’t all it seems. Behind closed doors it’s in a continual state of war and this sudden death leaves it in its biggest war yet. Should J.K. Rowling write another “Harry Potter” book? Leave your comment below! ? ‘Breaking Dawn’ Box Office: What It Means For ‘Part 2’

Box-office experts weigh in on whether ‘Twilight’ series can top blockbuster ‘Harry Potter’ finale. By Kevin P. Sullivan Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Opening weekend has come and gone for the first part of the “Twilight Saga” finale, and “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” bowed to an impressive $139.5 million at the box office , just short of the series-record $142 million for “New Moon” in 2009. But $139.5 million is certainly nothing to shake a stick at, and a number of box-office experts MTV News spoke with agreed that the number represents a serious accomplishment, despite coming up just short. “When the final numbers come in today, ‘Breaking Dawn’ will have the fifth-best opening ever, a record I’m sure every studio wouldn’t mind having,” said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations . “And even though ‘Breaking Dawn’ will always be in the shadow of ‘New Moon,’ which hit $142 million two years ago when it debuted over the same weekend, ‘Breaking Dawn,’ and the ‘Twilight’ franchise in general, is one of those rare commodities in Hollywood that sustains its audience from film to film.” The question of the drop in revenue from “New Moon” still remains. By normal box-office logic, returns would ramp up in anticipation for the finale, yet the penultimate entry in the series could not top the second. Phil Contrino, editor of Boxoffice.com , said it has to do with the fanbase. “I think a healthy portion of the audience is growing up and forgetting about this franchise. It’s not enough to put a significant dent in the grosses, but there’s definitely an impact,” he said. As “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” approaches, fans of both the “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” series anxiously await to see which finale will come out on top at the box office. Gitesh Pandya from Box Office Guru said Potter’s record will remain. “Since ‘Part 2’ is the final ‘Twilight’ film, I expect it to open a little higher and maybe even beat ‘New Moon,’ ” Pandya said. “But it won’t match the numbers for the final ‘Harry Potter’ unless it’s converted into 3-D.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Harry Potter’ Author ‘Seriously Considered’ Killing Ron Weasley

‘Midway through, I started thinking I might polish one of them off,’ J.K. Rowling says in DVD special feature. By Eric Ditzian Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley Photo: Murray Close/ Warner Bros. It’s no secret that a great many fans in the “Harry Potter” community — a whopping 89 percent, according to a wildly popular poll over at MTV Movies Blog — would have preferred that Hermione Granger end up with the boy wizard rather than with good ol’ Ron Weasley. Perhaps the same sentiment occurred to author J.K. Rowling, who recently admitted that she almost sent Ron to an early grave. “Funnily enough, I planned from the start that none of them would die,” Rowling told Daniel Radcliffe in a special feature on the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” Blu-ray and DVD, according to the U.K.’s Guardian. “Then midway through, which I think is a reflection of the fact that I wasn’t in a very happy place, I started thinking I might polish one of them off. Out of sheer spite. ‘There, now you definitely can’t have him anymore.’ But I think in my absolute heart of heart of hearts, although I did seriously consider killing Ron, [I wouldn’t have done it].” Rowling kept this franchise-altering potential story line a secret not only through completion of her “Potter” novels in 2007 but the end of the film series this summer. Now the author says she feels a sense of creative liberation that she can share news of the discarded plot point. “It’s a real relief to be able to talk about it all,” she said. The full Rowling-Radcliffe chat will be available on November 11, when the Blu-ray and DVD releases hit shelves. In September, MTV News debuted an exclusive clip from the chat in which Radcliffe compared “Harry Potter” to “Star Wars” and touted the way in which Rowling’s characters “exist in the collective consciousness of a generation.” That’s hardly an exaggeration, and it’s difficult to imagine Weasley, played by Rupert Grint in the films, not living on in the imaginations of fans. After all, Weasley finished in second place in our Harry Potter World Cup this summer, a fan-driven effort that attracted over seven million votes and was ultimately won by Alan Rickman’s Severus Snape. For Rowling, Weasley and “Potter” fans, then, any other fate for Ron would be unimaginable. “I’m going to miss the screaming. You don’t get that everywhere, and I’m going to miss that definitely,” Grint told MTV News at the final film’s red-carpet premiere. “I’m really going to miss playing [Ron] in these films.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
