The Downside of Heat Cogeneration at Coal Power Plants

A coal plant in China. Photo: Wikipedia , CC Don’t Turn Off the Heat Please Both the US and China have many coal plants (producing about 45% of the power in the US and 75% in China). One difference is that in China, it is more common for the waste heat from those power plants to be recovered and used to heat local residential buildings or for industrial purposes. On the face of it, this is a good thing, but as Kevin Bullis points out , this also… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Bon Jovi Bring Arena Rock To The American Music Awards

Band plays new single ‘What Do You Got’ and mini-greatest-hits set. By Gil Kaufman Jon Bon Jovi performs at the American Music Awards on Sunday Photo: ABC Dick Clark Productions Bon Jovi could have played any one of a dozen tunes to celebrate the recent release of their new greatest-hits album. But in keeping with their relentless forward march, Jon Bon and the boys played the new hit single from the album at Sunday night’s (November 21) American Music Awards. The majestic “What Do You Got,” which features the band’s patented mix of cowboy balladry and pop bravado, was like a Bon Jovi greatest hit in a nutshell, with its combination of Jon’s street-tough-done-good lyrics about the power of love and guitarist Richie Sambora’s chiming guitar and towering backup vocals. The legendary New Jersey rockers were, of course, celebrating the new greatest-hits album and screened the concert movie “Bon Jovi – The Circle Tour” in theaters nationwide, so it’s not like they were going to leave the room hangin’. With more than 120 million albums sold over a legendary career, they had to cough up some of the good stuff. As Sambora ripped into the chunky intro of “You Give Love a Bad Name” and digital flashes lit up the TV screen, audience member Russell Brand couldn’t contain his elated smile while the band cranked out the hit that put them on the map more than 20 years ago. Sambora hooked up the talk-box and Bon Jovi spread his arms in triumph for another fist-pumping staple, “It’s My Life,” as the crowd, including a head-bobbing Jada Pinkett Smith and a devil-horn-flashing Jenny McCarthy, danced in the aisles, delighted that an arena-rock show had suddenly broken out in the midst of what they thought was just going to be another run-of-the-mill awards show. Brandy Was ‘Very Sad’ About ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Elimination

‘I think Bristol did a great job,’ the singer says after controversial ‘DWTS’ results. By Jocelyn Vena Brandy appears on “The View” on Thursday Photo: ABC Many fans were shocked when Brandy was voted off “Dancing With the Stars” on Wednesday. Her elimination left Kyle Massey, Bristol Palin and Jennifer Grey in the top three as the show prepares to crown a winner next week. Asked how she felt about being eliminated, the singer took the high road but expressed some sadness. “Well, I think Bristol did a great job. She has improved [and] one of the great things about ‘Dancing With the Stars’ is the fans can get behind you and vote,” she said when she stopped by “The View” on Thursday (November 18). “I was sad. I was very sad because we worked so hard and when you come into competition you want to go as far as you can.” Brandy’s partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, didn’t get too heated about the elimination said he doesn’t believe Palin is a better dancer than Brandy. “I’m not ticked off,” Chmerkovskiy said. “I’m not ticked off because I feel everyone has the right to be on,” he added. “We had a lot of controversial eliminations this season. I feel like we should stay true to who we are now.” So does Maksim think he and Brandy were robbed? “Well, then a lot of people were robbed [over the years],” he said. Although Brandy isn’t taking home the mirror ball trophy, she said she has managed to win something else. “It’s completely changed my life,” she explained. “I feel like I’ve tapped back into my confidence and my power. This show has brought the best out in me [and] thanks to Maks.” She also had some predictions going into the final week of “DWTS.” “I don’t know who’s going to win but I know who I want to win … Kyle Massey,” she said. Partner Maks agreed saying, “I think Kyle is the best candidate.” What did you think of Brandy being voted off “DWTS”? Tell us in the comments! iSuppli Forecasts 15.8GW of Solar PV in 2010, 19.3GW in 2011

Photo: Flickr , CC Solid Solar Growth Market reserach firm iSuppli’s latest forecast for the solar power industry is out, and the predictions for total installed capacity in 2010 and 2011 are pretty positive. The forecast for 2010 was increased from 14.2 gigawatts (GW) to 15.8 GW, in good part thanks to stronger than expected demand in Germany. If accurate, this would represent 118.7% growth from 7.2GW in 2009! But sadly, 2011 won’t see another 100%+ increase; the forecast for that year is of 19.3 GW, down a bit from the pre… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Lindsay Lohan ‘Should Reach Out To Oprah,’ Fans Say

Fans give MTV News a variety of ways the troubled starlet can make a comeback. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lindsay Lohan arrives at court Friday Photo: Robyn Beck/ Getty Images Between the multiple jail and rehab stints, alcohol-monitoring devices and a dearth of high-profile onscreen roles, this year appears to have been especially trying for Lindsay Lohan . On Friday, the actress was sent to jail for the second time in three months (she was released the same day) after she admitted to failing a court-ordered drug test. Lohan will reportedly don a SCRAM bracelet for the second time this year and is due to head back to court on October 22. Her legal drama has all but eclipsed her film career and many wonder if Lohan can still attract fans with her work as ably as she can hog headlines with her antics. On Sunday (September 26), just days after her most recent jail stint, MTV News went to directly to the fans in New York’s Times Square to ask how they think Lohan can revive her career. “[She could make a comeback] if she actually would just learn from something and … take something seriously, and not act like … the world revolves around her and she has these special privileges that no one else has,” Lauren Suitors said. She pointed out that many are able to overcome bad decisions after they’ve hit rock bottom. “Other people have gone to jail and they come out and they’re just fine, but she just keeps making the same mistakes again.” “I really think that she probably needs to revamp herself and prove to everyone that she’s capable of being a good actress and cleaning up her life, ’cause, as of now, she’s kind of gone into a downward spiral,” Jenny Phillips observed. Phillips said Lohan should head back to rehab and put in the work when it comes to a comeback because she is ultimately a talented star. “She’s a legitimate actress when she’s not all drugged up and stuff.” Sarah Leigh said Lohan’s issues stem from her substance abuse problems , an observation the actress largely agrees with, and suggested a single step toward getting her act together: “Stop taking drugs!” Evoking the “All publicity is good publicity” philosophy, Mel Dummett said that Lohan’s high-profile high jinks will probably boost for enfeebled status as a box-office draw. “I think this is actually going to revive her career ’cause she’s been in the news,” she said. “Any celebrity site you go to she’s covering the whole thing.” Tramel Ulysses agrees that she should “keep doing what she do” and that, ultimately, everybody makes mistakes. “I don’t think she should be judged because everybody mess up, people do wrong things, people say they civilized but people also do bad things,” Ulysses noted. “Everybody have their bad days.” Sebastian Moore said Lohan should look to a higher power to guide her through the drama. “Just try to reach out to Oprah and let her solve everything,” Moore said. “That’s what I would do.” How do you think Lindsay Lohan can revive her career? For Democracy to Work…

For democracy to work, complete transparency must be obtained. There must be no hiding behind patriotism, national security, and fear. These catch phrases are a vault for the secrets a government does not want the public to know of. Also due to these phrases, Americans society, while often preaching freedom of speech, in reality practices resentment, hatred, and peer pressure against those who step outside the norm (of what is politically correct). I would thus say no government needs to prohibit the freedom of speech, but only let the people prohibit (more so regulate) speech for them. It has happened so many times in our country’s past, we cannot afford to let this keep happening. For democracy to work, diplomacy must be the first and preferably the only course of action in settling disputes. Democracy cannot be offensive in nature—only defensive. Due to reasons prior, freedoms and liberties (primarily those stemming from privacy) cannot waver in the shadow of fear, and thus democracy is at a severe disadvantage when it comes to warfare—either democracy (liberty) fails, or military security fails. Just as the integrity of a family is tested through hardships, the integrity of our government is tested through decisions made during or related to warfare and economic downtimes. A democratic government thus cannot suddenly revoke civil liberties or rights in lieu of the often vague, “Clear and Present Danger.” And thus, for democracy to work, preemptive strikes cannot occur. A democratic society must lead by example, not retaliation, revenge, or fear. For democracy to work, the freedom of the press must be entirely free of regulation and censorship. The live footage of firefights during the Vietnam War had an immense impact on the outlook of war for those on the home front. The press is vastly more censored (both from corporate, and government), today. We cannot afford to have a censored press, as it holds all the power in shifting the majority of Americans’ view of any issue or event. People (straw man, I know) are gullible, and do not realize the power that manipulation has on their decisions and views. For democracy to work, capitalism must maintain complete separation and segregation from the democratic system. As soon as private funding enters the picture, our potential candidates are primarily only determined by officials promising the majority (the currently diminishing middle class) of Americans false promises, while truly only representing those providing the most money (synonymous with votes) to their campaign. Votes don't get politicians elected, advertising & funding does. So who will get prioritized? For democracy to work, lobbying must be made illegal, or vastly more restricted and regulated. For democracy to work, a form of free election must be in order. An equal amount of taxpayer money must be distributed to the two presidential candidates. Since funding is the primary means of obtaining a position, we limit ourselves on the selection of candidates. Money cannot be a prerequisite in order to obtain or maintain a political position–yet it is. Set up two temporary television channels and websites for these candidates. Debates should be daily, and written correspondence between the two candidates should be a must—the topic voted upon by the public. I say written responses because some people are better at composing their thoughts on paper rather than in speech with millions watching, that is more or less just a game of who is quicker on their feet, not who is more reasonable or knowledgeable. Nominees for the general elections should only obtain their money through local donation from the citizens of their future jurisdiction, or by some other means which would allow absolutely ANY American citizen to run and potentially win—not based on their funding and advertising flash, but by their intelligence, charisma, knowledge, ethos, and promises. In sociology, “random” is defined as everyone having an equal chance and possibility to participate (in an experiment); not every American citizen has an equal chance of running for office. I don't have a perfect answer, but it's apparent something needs changed. For democracy to work, bliss cannot be derived from ignorance. The importance of pursuing the truth and finding information for ones’ self must be emphasized. Everyone is entitled to vote, but not everyone understands for who their vote entitles. For democracy to work, accountability must be exacted out. False campaign promises are a form of false advertisement. Politicians must be held to the same justice system as we, the people, are. Anything else to add? (News seemed to be the only appropriate place to put this; my apologies if not). http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f3/Bald_eagle_landing.jpg added by: Jake_Leonard
