Is Denver Post Columnist Littwin Completely Ignorant of Charles Bolden Controversy?

In this morning’s Denver Post, Mike Littwin manages to display simultaneously the insularity and smugness of the One Party media , as well as one of the last tools left in the left’s rather empty playbook. Apparently, during a Senate debate at Channel 12, Jane Norton said, “We need a NASA budget that doesn’t cater to making Muslims feel good but that is strong on science …” This scandalized Littwin, who assumed it was a cheap shot at Muslims. Evidently, he hadn’t seen the video of NASA head Charles Bolden that’s been making the rounds on the conservative and libertarian blogosphere: Remarkably, instead of conceding that we’re paying all those scientists, engineers, and bureaucrats to actually achieve, or at least facilitate achievement, in space, Littwin uses his and the rest of the MSM reporters’ ignorance of the interview as evidence that the argument was out of place, and then goes straight for the race card: When I read the stories, I remembered hearing something about it. But when I showed Norton’s quote to several people up on the news — but not necessarily up on Fox News — they each registered a blank. That suggests something we already knew: that we get our news these days from different places. What it doesn’t tell us, though, is why Norton thought the story was worth mentioning at all. Presumably Norton meant to say “Muslim countries” rather than all “Muslims,” including those who might live, say, next door. I guess that’s still up for debate. For the record, I’m as proud as anyone of Ilan Ramon, but his presence on the shuttle should have been incidental to its mission, not actually its mission.  Also for the record, I’m with Bill Whittle when he lauds NASA’s retreat to make room for a more sustainable private space program. A few years ago, at an LPR session, Littwin told me that reporters were well aware of the blogosphere, that they spent tons of time reading blogs in an effort to understand this new media.  Seems they manage to miss HotAir, Powerline, Pajamas Media, Instapundit. The line of argument, to the extent that there is one, is that since Littwin hadn’t seen the video, Norton may be a bigot.  In a year when the left’s traditional arguments appear to have run out of steam, there’s one they think they can reliably return to, time and again.  The JournoList extracts over at Daily Caller indicate the power that the accusation of racism once had, and that the left still thinks it has.  But with the country having elected a black president, answering a cry of “read the Constitution” with “you must be racist” is increasing falling on deaf ears. Those who thought that Obama’s presidency might herald a post-racial era may yet be right.  Just not exactly how they thought.

Fabolous Re-Releasing The Funeral Service 2 Mixtape As An EP

‘It started out as something I wanted to give free to the fans and people who accept my work,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Fabolous Photo: Def Jam Midseason Salute: Fabolous’ The Funeral Service: There Is No Competition 2 We have to give credit where it’s due. Our segment on Fab’s mixtape has been one of the most applauded productions we’ve put together this year. Shot on location at Benta’s Funeral Home (shout to b-day girl Whitney!), Loso previewed what would be a front-runner for Mixtape of the Year. The Brooklyn native’s street CD was so hot, Def Jam stepped in and told him it was time to make some money off it. Fab is pulling a Drake and re-releasing the tape as an EP, much like Drizzy did with So Far Gone in ’09. “It’s really incredible how people will connect with the work,” Fab said. “I think we put a lot of work into it, with the whole funeral theme. We didn’t just say it and you had to daydream it. We went into the funeral homes. We picked caskets out for the competition. Def Jam, this summer, is gonna put the mixtape out as an EP. So I did about four new songs, put ’em with some of the original joints from the mixtape. We got more viral videos coming. We just gonna keep it going and let it end as the classic it is. A lot of people saying it’s a classic, one of the, if not the best mixtape of 2010. It’s crazy to me, because it started out as something I wanted to give free to the fans and people who accept my work. Def Jam even came in and said, ‘Whoa, we gotta get a piece.’ It’s a good thing, man. ” ‘Body Ya’ definitely did its thing,” he added about one of the standout cuts from the mixtape. “It got added to Hot 97 and Power 105.1. ‘Body Ya’ grew its own legs. The mixtape itself grew its own legs. People are still asking about it. In this fast-paced music industry, music and mixtapes don’t have that much longevity. You might listen to it for a month, somebody else drop they joint and you listening to it the next month. But No Competition 2, people are still listening to it , still on Twitter talking about it. It’s crazy.” Loso is keeping his production to new guys on the EP. “I worked with Sonaro, a producer who just signed to Street Family. He did ‘Body Ya.’ I worked with the guy who did [Rick Ross’] ‘Blowin’ Money Fast,’ Lex Luger. He did a song for me called ‘Lights Out.’ The one with Sonaro is called ‘Body Count.’ I did one more with Ryan Leslie called ‘You Be Killin’ Them.’ It’s a little bit more for the females but keeping with the theme. I think when people hear these three joints, they gonna be like, ‘He’s still giving us great music, and it’s just a mixtape, just an EP.’ And from here, I’m working on the album.” Fab’s album is Loso’s Way 2. European nudes and American prudes

(Tribune Media Services) — It was 1978. My vagabuddy Gene and I were heading for a Turkish bath. With tattered towel around my waist, I walked gingerly across slippery marble into a steamy world of shadowy Turks under Byzantine domes. I felt gawky … and more naked than naked. After an awkward sit in the sauna, a muscular Turk, who doled out massages like cannery workers gut salmon, laid me onto a round marble slab. With a loud slap, he landed on me, his hands working as if kneading dough in a prison bakery. He smashed and stretched each of my tight muscles. Finally, like lobotomized Gumbys, we were led to marble thrones to be doused in hot water and scrubbed with coarse mittens. Dirt curled off of us in rolls. Finally, we emerged onto the streets of Istanbul, cleaner than we'd ever been. Any traveler to Europe who's visited a bath, perused a newsstand, hung out at a beach or park on a sunny day, or channel-surfed broadcast TV late at night has noticed that Europeans are more relaxed than Americans about nudity. In the south of France, sunbathing grandmothers have no tan lines. In Norway, young children play naked in fountains. On summer days, accountants in Munich head to the park on their lunch break to grin and bare it, trading corporate suits for birthday suits. It's quite a shock to Americans (they're the ones riding their bikes into the river and trees). In Belgium, huge billboards advertise soap by showing a woman's lathered-up breasts. A Copenhagen student tourist center welcomes visitors with a bowl of free condoms at their info desk. I'm not comfortable with all of this, though I do think Americans tend to be overly prudish. But if you can leave your inhibitions at home, you can better appreciate some of the amazing experiences Europe has to offer. In Finland, a trip to a public sauna — warmed by a wood-fired stove topped with rocks — not only feels good, but is a living slice of this culture. Historically, Turkish baths weren't just for getting clean — they were also a place for socializing, where Muslim women could look for a suitable bride for their sons or celebrate the birth of a baby. Croatia has some of the best beaches — many of them without any dress code. The trend dates back to royalty: In 1936, England's King Edward VIII visited the island of Rab on holiday. Wanting an all-over tan, he went through the proper channels to have one of Rab's beaches designated for nudists. Inspired by his example, other travelers followed suit (er, dropped suit) … and a phenomenon was born. Not everyone in Europe is comfortable with nudity. At the Vatican Museum, fig leaves cover many statues. From 1550 to 1800, the Church decided that certain parts of the human anatomy were obscene. Perhaps Church leaders associated these full-frontal sculptures with the outbreak of Renaissance humanism that reduced their power in Europe. Whatever the cause, they reacted by covering classical crotches with plaster fig leaves, the same kind of leaves that Adam and Eve used when the concept of “privates” was invented. Years ago, I faced my own fig-leaf dilemma. An early edition of my art-for-travelers guidebook featured a naked David on the cover. My publisher was concerned that bookstores in more conservative areas wouldn't stock it. A fig leaf would help sales. I proposed, just for fun, that we put a peelable fig leaf on the cover so readers could customize the level of nudity. I even paid half the cost and had the fun experience of writing “for fig leafs” on a check. Things get trickier when it comes to public television. Because of FCC regulations, we can't easily show spas, saunas, or beaches in Europe where nudity is the norm. And because I show paintings and sculptures of naked bodies, my programs are flagged by the network and, in some regions, aired only after 10 p.m., when things are less restrictive. In recent years, programmers actually got a list of how many seconds that marble and canvas body parts appeared in each episode. They couldn't inflict a Titian painting or a Bernini statue on a conservative viewership without taking heat and risking having to pay enormous fines of $275,000. You may not want to bring the more casual European approach to sex and the human body back home with you. And I'm not saying we should all run around naked. But I like a continent where the human body is considered a divine work of art worth admiring openly. added by: eden49

Lauren Conrad’s Love Triangle, Lady Gaga’s ‘Hills’ Past And More On ‘The Hills: Revealed’

‘The Hills: Revealed’ takes a look at some of the biggest moments in the show’s history. By Jocelyn Vena Lauren Conrad on “The Hills” Photo: MTV Do you think you know everything about “The Hills” ? Have you been following the lives of Lauren Conrad and her gang since her days on “Laguna Beach?” Well, on MTV’s “The Hills: Revealed,” fans get the behind-the-scenes stories behind some of the show’s greatest moments. And, if you think you know, the show proved that you really have no idea. Long before Lauren Conrad lived in “The Hills,” she was high school girl caught up in a love triangle with Laguna Beach High’s Stephen Colletti and future “Hills” star Kristin Cavallari. But, it seemed that securing the elusive Colletti wasn’t as easy as “Laguna Beach” producers hoped that it would be. Colletti didn’t want to be on the show, and despite LC admitting that she liked him on her audition tape, it took some convincing to get Colletti to agree. Eventually he did, but there was a third puzzle piece missing: “We literally could not find Kristin,” MTV executive Liz Gately said. “We didn’t have any tape on her, didn’t have any pictures — our entire production was waiting on this girl.” Once “Laguna” producers found Cavallari, they had a show and everyone couldn’t get enough of LC. So, eventually “LB” came to an end and she moved to “The Hills,” where fans got the chance to meet Lady Gaga long before she was the superstar that she is now. At a 2008 fashion show, LC and her pal Whitney Port had to help style Gaga for a performance at the show. Gaga’s catsuit zipper broke, LC managed to save the day and from there a star was born. Speaking of stars being born, while Justin Bobby (whose last name happens to be Brescia) didn’t show up on the show until season 3, he had been in Audrina Patridge’s life for quite a while longer. They had met when Audrina was working at Quixote Studios and he was there, working on a shoot as a hair stylist. They dated on and off for some time, and while it was difficult for Audrina to get him to commit, it was more difficult for “Hills” producers to get him to agree to be on the show. So by the time he and Audrina decided to give their relationship another try, he had to agree to be on the show. “Third season comes around and he’s back in my life,” Audrina recalled. “So I’m like, ‘Well if you want to hang out with me you have to be on camera.'” He finally agreed, Lo Bosworth christened him Justin Bobby and the rest is reality-TV relationship history. Fans couldn’t get enough of Speidi, so when Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt decided to get married in April 2009, producers had to make sure that everything, including cameos by LC and Kristin, went just right. As if keeping the two girls away from each other wasn’t difficult enough, power issues in the church meant that they would have to work hours longer. Once they got the power restored, LC was able to reunite with Heidi one last time, Kristin was able to surprise everyone by strutting into the church, Speidi could finally get married — not to mention that LC could drive off into the sunset. Join MTV News all week as we look back at the best of “The Hills” and celebrate the series finale with the cast during our livestream from the finale’s red carpet on Tuesday! Gore story goes mainstream

The story of Al Gore’s alleged unwanted sexual advances toward a Portland, Ore., masseuse, which had been simmering since the National Enquirer first published the allegations last week, broke into the mainstream news cycle Friday after the Portland police announced they would reopen their investigation. Anderson Cooper did a segment on the story on CNN Thursday night. By Friday, it was all over network television newscasts, while the Oregonian had a front-page mea culpa by the Portland police chief saying his department had mishandled the investigation when it first surfaced in 2006. The story’s jump from the fringe to the mainstream compounds the problems for Gore, whose family spokesman, Kalee Kreider, has said that Gore “unequivocally and emphatically” denied making unwanted sexual advances. “Further investigation into this matter will only benefit Mr. Gore.” It also brought up by-now-familiar accusations of the media’s complicity in covering up the scandal when it first surfaced. The Portland Tribune, which was looking into the story in 2007 and 2008, has taken some heat for its decision not to go forward with the story. In a piece titled “Al Gore and the Media Protection Racket,” The American Spectator’s Jeffrey Lord argued that the existence of a police report involving the former vice president was news in itself, and the Tribune should have reported it as such. For the Spectator, it was d

Colin Farrell Cast As Ozzy Osbourne?

The always-reliable Perez Hilton is reporting that Colin Farrell has signed on to play the Prince of Darkness himself in the upcoming Ozzy biopic. Reportedly Ozzy wanted an unknown from his hometown of Birmingham while Sharon was hoping for Johnny Depp, but I think Colin’s a fine choice to play the bat-hungry Ozzy. No word on who might play the power-behind-the-Satanic-throne, Sharon, but I’m hoping Tilda Swinton’s dance card is free. What do you think? [ Perez Hilton ]

Today Show Marks One Year Anniversary of Palin’s Decision to ‘Cash In’

To mark the one year anniversary of Sarah Palin stepping down from her duties as governor of Alaska, NBC’s Norah O’Donnell, on Friday’s Today show, recounted for viewers what the former vice presidential candidate is doing, namely “cashing in.” Accompanied by a “cha-ching” sound effect O’Donnell ran down Palin’s various TV and book deals. And while O’Donnell also noted Palin has been very effective stumping for GOP candidates in the primaries she was careful to note that the “polarizing” Palin had “limits to her appeal,” as she cited an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll saying 52 percent view her political endorsements negatively. Along with the poll and TV and book deals, O’Donnell also included “her teenage daughter’s tumultuous relationship with Levi Johnston,” and “her rage” at author Joe McGinnis “who’s moved directly next door to her Wasilla home ” as negatives. How exactly Palin’s “rage” at a writer/stalker moving next door to her family home could be seen as a limit to her appeal wasn’t fully explained. The following is the full segment as it was aired on the July 2 Today show: MATT LAUER: It was a year ago tomorrow that Sarah Palin made the surprise announcement that she was resigning as the governor of Alaska. And a lot has changed in the past 12 months. NBC’s Norah O’Donnell has details on that. Norah, good morning. [On screen headline: “‘Going Rogue’ Sarah Palin, One Year After Resigning As Governor”] NORAH O’DONNELL: A lot has changed. You know she may be the most controversial and polarizing figure in politics today, but she’s also helped elect some new stars in the Republican Party, while at the same time becoming a multi-millionaire. One year ago Sarah Palin shocked everyone, announcing she would resign as governor of Alaska with 18 months still left on her term. SARAH PALIN: It would be apathetic to just kind of hunker down and go with the flow. We’re fishermen. We know that only dead fish go with the flow. PAT BUCHANAN: If Sarah Palin was thinking about being President of the United States, she’s taking a real step backward. O’DONNELL: But if anything, Palin has surged forward. More visible- JAY LENO: Thanks for coming! How are you doing? O’DONNELL: And possibly more influential than ever. PALIN: How is that hopey-changey stuff working out for ya? O’DONNELL: Especially in recent Republican primaries, backing Tea Party candidates across the country and women like South Carolina’s Nikki Haley. PALIN: Nikki had the backbone to vote against taking the Obama stimulus money. O’DONNELL: Her power is fueled but her political action committee with a deep war chest and a vast army of Facebook and Twitter followers. ANNE KORNBLUT, THE WASHINGTON POST: She does still have a very loud megaphone when she tweets, when she’s on Facebook. She still has the power to affect a policy debate when she wants to. O’DONNELL: But there may be limits to her appeal. A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll shows that 52 percent see her political endorsements negatively. And for Sarah Palin, the family dramas that captivated America during the campaign have continued. There’s her teenage daughter’s tumultuous relationship with Levi Johnston. PALIN: I hear he goes by the name Ricky Hollywood now. O’DONNELL: Her rage at an author who’s moved directly next door to her Wasilla home, where he’s writing a book about her. JOE MCGINNISS: She has pushed a button and unleashed the hounds of hell and now we’re out there slavering and barking and growling. O’DONNELL OVER “CHA-CHING” SOUND EFFECT: The national fascination with the Palins has not abated and Sarah Palin is cashing in, going from $125,000 a year to an estimated $12 million. There’s her blockbuster bestseller Going Rogue, on that deal, $7 million. Her own TV show on TLC, on that deal, $2 million. And an exclusive contract with Fox News channel, $1 million. And as for her speeches, she makes as much as $100,000 a pop and even those aren’t without controversy. PALIN: Got my water? Do I have my straws? I want my straws. And I want them bent, please. Thank you. At least that’s what I read in some of the lame stream media outlets, is that I was demanding straws. O’DONNELL: Well her next project is a new book called America By Heart. It’s due in November and she is also expected to be out there again on another book tour, Matt. And the crowds come out for her. LAUER: Oh and we continue to talk about her. There’s no question about it. Norah, thanks very much. O’DONNELL: You’re welcome. LAUER: Good to see you.
