6 Takeaways From the DGA and SAG Awards Weekend

The most demoralizing awards season in recent memory continued over the weekend, with the Directors Guild and the Screen Actors Guild handing out their hardware to pretty much everyone you expected to receive it. I’ll factor all this into Oscar Index on Wednesday for a complete-race breakdown, but here are the five basic takeaways worth keeping in mind: 1. The Artist is not coming back. Michel Hazanavicius’s DGA win for Best Director, paired with last weekend’s Producers Guild win for Best Picture, all but cements The Artist ‘s standing as the thoroughbred way, way out in front of the Oscar pack. It isn’t about to slow up, either; the most that the teams behind such films as The Descendants , The Help and Hugo can hope for is that their principals cure cancer this week. And even that might not be enough goodwill to ratchet up their momentum. 2. Michel Hazanavicius/Tom Hooper/Quentin Tarantino are to 2012 what Robert Rodriguez/Kevin Smith/Quentin Tarantino were to 1994. If mellow is what wins, then Harvey Weinstein will give awards voters mellow. He’s about to go two-for-two with this (mostly) new stable of directorial talent, having previously made nominees of Tarantino and (ahem) Stephen Daldry. Next up in 2013, it’s Tarantino again with Django Unchained and Paul Thomas Anderson perhaps giving us back some edge as well with his new one. But mostly just look for Harvey to continue making whatever myths he can in the perennial quest to bolster his own. 3. Bank on Viola Davis. It’s not so much the precursors won — her SAG and Critics Choice awards for Best Actress, for example — that now have her ahead of Meryl Streep in the Oscar race. It’s her extraordinary class and grace and humility in accepting her plaudits — her belief in her work, her colleagues, and the power of what they created. Only the Artist gang has really shown any ability to match that, and thus look for both to be rewarded next month with the majority of the Academy’s top prizes — including… 4. Jean Dujardin should pull through. I don’t know what surveys or rankings some experts were reading that made Dujardin’s SAG win on Sunday an ” upset .” Movieline’s Institute for the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics has had the guy tracking in the lead for two months now , with Clooney only recently pulling even after the Golden Globes. Now Dujardin returns to the solo lead, probably for good. Big deal. 5. The Academy embarrassed itself nominating Glenn Close. I don’t have much outrage left about this year’s Oscar class, but just watching another goddamn tired Albert Nobbs clip and seeing Tilda Swinton’s gracious recognition of her own SAG nomination and thinking about Swinton and Charlize Theron and Kirsten Dunst and Elizabeth Olsen and at least three or four other actresses more worthy of Close’s Oscar nomination and what could have been had me so irretrievably embittered all over again. What a bunch of bozos we’ve built this beat around. Or maybe we’re the bozos. Either way, it’s a waste. 6. It won’t get any better next year. Who’s ready for the great John Hawkes ( The Surrogate )/Daniel Day Lewis ( Lincoln ) battle of 2013? I said, who’s ready — enh, forget it. Is Oprah Really Blue Ivy’s Godmother?

Some reports surfaced earlier this week that none other than Oprah is the godmother of Beyonce and Jay-Z’s newborn baby girl, Blue Ivy Carter. But is it true? It is not. Oprah is not the godmother. She may be a fairy godmother in a non-official sense – she did send baby Blue an entire trunk full of books already – but she hasn’t been given any title. Winfrey’s BFF Gayle King said : “Let me just say, if [this] is true, it is news to her. You know, she was heading to South Africa when the baby was born.” A separate source close to the power couple’s camp also tells E! News that this is not true, and that Media Takeout was wrong (in a stunning revelation). Again, no need to worry, though, as Oprah’s close to Beyonce and Jay-Z, so Blue Ivy should still get first dibs on Winfrey’s annual Favorite Things list. YOU get a gold-plated stroller!!! Evanescence’s ‘My Heart Is Broken’ Video: The Haunting

Brand-new clip finds the band trapped within a nightmare of its own invention. By James Montgomery Evanescence’s Amy Lee on the set of their “My Heart Is Broken” video Photo: Matt Elias/MTV News After nearly a month spent touting its various ethereal qualities , on Tuesday (January 24), Evanescence premiered their video for “My Heart Is Broken,” a dark, dreamlike thing that pushes Amy Lee’s claustrophobic musings to the next level. And somewhere beyond that too. As Lee told MTV News back in December, the look and feel of the “Broken” clip was very much influenced by the British fantasy/horror flick “Paperhouse,” about a young girl who creates vivid dream worlds to escape the harsh reality of everyday life, only to eventually realize she’s stuck in those dreams — inspiration that certainly resonates with the song’s lyrics, which are very much about being trapped in a dark, desolate place and trying to free one’s self despite mounting evidence to the contrary. Working with director Dean Karr, and aided very much by fiber-optic technology, Evanescence have created a video that is both haunting and haunted. It opens with Lee suspended in an inky void, a single light projecting from her finger. While her bandmates bash away in the blackness, she slowly begins to fill her emptiness by creating a dream world — a fallow field, a sea of stars, a crumbling room — until she eventually realizes that, in spite of her attempts, she is just as trapped as she was before. At clip’s end, the viewer is left to wonder whether she has the power to escape (though a cracked mirror seems to indicate she can), which, in a way, only further connects the video to the song itself: Like Lee sings, each of us have within ourselves the ability to free ourselves from any situation; whether we do or not is largely our decision. The first step seems to be realizing that the walls we surround ourselves with are largely of our own creation. The rest is up to us. What do you think of the “My Heart Is Broken” video? Obama’s Singing Gets Raves From ‘American Idol’ Coach

‘AI’ associate music director Michael Orland tells MTV News in an exclusive that prez’s pipes would get him to Hollywood Week. By Jim Cantiello President Barack Obama at the Apollo Theater on Thursday Photo: Shahar Azran/WireImage This week, “American Idol” kicked off its 11th season, and it appears even President Obama is getting into the spirit. On Thursday night at a fundraiser at the Apollo Theater, the commander in chief surprised a star-studded Harlem, New York, crowd by busting out a few measures of “AI” staple Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.” Obama’s smooth singing voice impressed many — including the Rev. Al Green himself, who told TMZ that Obama “nailed it” — but does the leader of the free world have what it takes to make it on America’s #1 singing competition? “American Idol” associate music director and vocal coach Michael Orland certainly thinks so! “I swear to you, if he auditioned for me in the big stadium [rounds], I would have put him through to the producers immediately,” Orland exclusively told MTV News. “I think he was really charming and had a great voice, and that’s all you can really tell in the a cappella rounds anyway. … I thought his phrasing was great, how he broke it up and really worked the room while he was doing it. But even more noteworthy was Obama’s perfect pitch. “He was in the exact same key [as Al Green’s recording]. To pull that out of the air, with everything perfectly in tune, I was really impressed,” Orland added. The vocal pro even believes Obama’s voice was strong enough to win over ultimate deciders Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. “I guarantee you he would have gotten a Golden Ticket.” On his hypothetical “Idol” journey, Obama’s next challenge would be the dreaded Hollywood Week , where hundreds of hopefuls are forced to work around the clock, learning group numbers with little sleep and lots of drama. “I think considering the amount of stress he’s normally under, he’d do really well,” Orland laughed. The “Idol” insider struggled to compare Obama’s singing voice to any previous contestants but, ultimately, that’s what makes the President a fantastic prospect. “It sounded like him! He sang like he speaks. He has a unique voice which is all you ever try to find in somebody. … He didn’t try to copy anybody,” Orland raved. Still, every singer could use a little constructive criticism — even singers who have the power to start nuclear war — and if Orland were working with Obama on a full-fledged “Idol” performance, he would encourage the President to take a few risks. “When you do one of those really well-known songs, don’t be afraid to change it up a little bit,” Orland said, jokingly adding, “If they could send Air Force One, I would give him a free coaching!” Alas, Obama is too old to audition for “Idol” by 22 years, but fear not, Mr. President … there’s always season two of “The X Factor.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. My Chemical Romance’s ‘Kids From Yesterday’: Death Of Danger

Fan-made video for ‘The Kids From Yesterday’ looks back at the band’s rise to fame. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way in “The Kids From Yesterday” music video Photo: Warner Music Group Really, My Chemical Romance ‘s Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys deserved better. A big, bold re-invention of their sound and swagger, it was, by the band’s own admission, a “missile” aimed at destroying the staid state of rock and roll, and perhaps because of that fact, it failed to catch on here in the states. You could practically track its decline based on the videos MCR released off the album, starting with the big-budget “Na Na Na” and the equally flashy follow-up, “Sing,” in which they offed the titular Killjoys (who seemingly will never be heard of again). Their next single, “Planetary (Go!)” came coupled with a live video, and, to the best of my knowledge, a clip for “Bulletproof Heart” never materialized at all. My Chem actually seemed to address the matter in an interview with MTV News last year , in which frontman Gerard Way lamented that the band had “gone through so many things” over the course of the Danger Days cycle, and hinted that, if there were to be any more videos off the album, they’d have to be financed by MCR themselves. So it’s somewhat fitting that, on Monday, they unveiled the final clip from Danger Days: a fan-made video for “The Kids From Yesterday” that documents the band’s decade-long climb from Neo-Goth New Jersey rockers to interplanetary conceptual quartet. Like the song itself, the clip is a bittersweet thing, recounting MCR’s many triumphs (a pastiche of memorable live moments, it culminates with their headlining slots at Reading and Leeds this past summer), while leaving those who love to read between the lines to wonder if perhaps the band’s latest era also represents the end … not necessarily of My Chem themselves, but of a moment in rock that now seems to have all but disappeared. Truly, MCR were the last bastions of the heady heyday of mid-aughts MySpace punk, and now, well, who knows what’s next? Of course, much of the message behind Danger Days seems to be one of self-empowerment, of inspiring fans to take matters into their own hands and shaking up the status quo. That’s yet another reason why “Kids” is such a fitting sendoff; it was made in collaboration with a fan named Emily Eisemann, who had culled through live footage and initially created a clip of her own. There’s a reason why the video ends with the phrase “Art is the Weapon,” after all: it’s been the band’s clarion call this entire time. It’s also something Way touched on during Danger Days’ release, when he told MTV News that the album was not a conceptual piece, but rather “a complete allegory” for smashing the system and placing the power directly in the hands of their fans. And “Kids” is proof that MCR’s message was heard loud and clear, perhaps not by a majority of the record-buying public, but definitely — and most appropriately — by their fans. Sometimes, sales aren’t the only measure of a band’s success, and Danger Days is a testament to that fact. “Kids” may bring one chapter of their career to a close, but wherever My Chemical Romance go next, you know they’ll do so boldly; that’s what makes great bands truly great after all: the willingness to push the boundaries, to purvey inspiration, to shake things up … sometimes even at their own expense. Drugs Are Bad M’Kay: Meth-Smoking Mom Videotaped Herself Getting Zooted Before Shooting And Stabbing BabyDaddy, Murking His Cousin, Their Two Kids And Herself

SMH… Epitome of a bad mother , or bad batch of meth? A woman who shot her two young children, their father and a cousin in California’s Central Valley before committing suicide took video of herself on her iPad as she smoked methamphetamine prior to the killings, police said Monday. The apparent murder-suicide by 23-year-old Aide Mendez began Sunday morning when she argued with the father of her two children, 33-year-old Eduardo Lopez. After neighbors called police to report trouble, officers arrived to find Lopez outside the Silver Lakes Apartment with knife and gunshot wounds, said Lt. Mark Salazar, homicide commander for the Fresno Police Department. They heard a muffled shot from inside the first-floor apartment and discovered Mendez had killed herself, her boyfriend’s cousin, Paul Medina, 27, as well as her two children, 17-month-old Aliyah Echeverria and Isaiah Echeverria, 3. Police told The Fresno Bee they found Mendez in the bathroom, and found the children in the apartment’s bathtub, where they had been shot at least once. The boy was found dead on the scene, Salazar said. Police tried to resuscitate the girl but she later died at a nearby hospital. “We do know that drugs played a key role, but we don’t know to what extent,” Salazar said. “She was seen prior to the shooting smoking methamphetamine. She recorded herself on an iPad showing her and Paul Medina smoking meth. We know the power of meth.” Salazar said the time stamp on the iPad video would have to be tested but preliminary information indicated it was recorded within a few hours of the murder. “Her actions just seemed bizarre; her mannerism, the way she was moving her hands and her facial expressions,” Salazar said, noting other drugs may have been involved but that it would take weeks before the toxicology reports were complete. Lopez remained in critical condition Monday evening at Community Regional Medical Center with stab wounds and a gunshot wound to the neck, said Mary Lisa Russell, a hospital spokeswoman. A 7-year-old neighbor girl who was in the apartment escaped unharmed. Authorities said Monday they had yet to piece together a motive, but said family members reported that Mendez had lost a baby several years ago, and was still grieving over the loss. Police recovered 10 grams of meth, $8,000 in cash and three firearms in the apartment; two of them used. “There’s some things we just don’t know because most of the people in that house are dead and the one person who is alive can’t speak right now,” Salazar said. Jesus Gonzalez told KFSN-TV, an ABC affiliate in Fresno, that shortly before 7 a.m. on Sunday he heard gunshots and then a pounding on his door. He opened the door to find Lopez bleeding profusely. “I opened the door and he fell in front of me, and I take him and I pull him inside,” Gonzalez said. He said that before he could drag Lopez inside, Mendez tried to pull him back outside again. Gonzalez said he shouted at her, “Hey, what happened, what happened?” and she ran off. The family lived in the back of the gated apartment complex in southeast Fresno, which has neat lawns, trees and a children’s playground. Neighbors said there was no indication of violence between the couple before Sunday’s shootings. “They would come out with the baby carriage, and the man was taking care of his children,” neighbor Eric Gonzalez said. Another neighbor said Monday residents were shaken by the shooting, and still struggling to comprehend what had happened. “It just really gets you thinking about how a mother could just grab her kids and kill them,” Lizeth Gonzalez, a mother of three small children who lives in the complex. “I never thought it would happen here. Whatever she did, I hope God can somehow forgive her.” This is a damned shame. R.I.P. to those precious babies and the young man who lost his life.
