THROWBACK: Eric B & Rakim’s, “Paid In Full”

Continue reading here:

Words By Hafeez Raji Rarely do pioneers stay relevant some twenty-five  years after coming on the scene to redefine a genre as one William Griffin, aka Rakim bka The R. Over two decades ago my only knowledge of hip hop–or better yet “rap”–revolved literally on my first vinyl album, a compilation of the Sugar Hill Gang’s record label greatest hits featuring Grand Master Flash, Whodini, The Sugar Hill Gang and a cast of others not even worth mentioning. That album would take a back seat to the only album that mattered to me for years to come and still ranks on my top 10 of all time. Paid in Full by all accounts did what Nirvana’s Nevermind did to the music landscape back in 87 and is widely considered to every bit as influential and important as the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band . Musically it broke open the vault to every James Brown beat ever made and all but killed the common theme of sampling disco and rock albums to create the music for hip hop artists to rhyme to. Before Rakim blessed the mic, the themes of hip hop were fairly light-hearted concentrating primarily on party themes and less thought provoking rhymes. While Run DMC was screaming about being Kings of Rock , Rakim challenged our minds and challenged emcees to put more thought and emphasis on lyrics while charting his way to being labeled God Mc. “I take 7 emcees put em in line, add 7 more brothers who think they can rhyme, it will take 7 more before I go for mine and that’s 21 emcees ate up at the same time.” – “My Melody” Few other hip-hop albums have been sampled more or listed in the top ten as Paid in Full .  Stetsasonic, Gang Starr, 2pac, NWA, Lord Finesse, Warren G, Smif-N-Wessun, Birdman, Lil Wayne, Girl Talk and so on have all sampled Paid in Full . Back in ‘87 hip-hop still had a negative view from the critics and was really thought to be a fad that would soon die. It was perceived as crude noise with no real background or foundation for credibility when compared to other genres, which at most had their ties to soul, jazz or rock. Like Punk Rock the previous decade you had a lot of acts and crew who just simply had no talent or business picking up a microphone hopping on the scene and further contributing to the assertion that the fad would soon die. Paid In Full ushered in a new era of rap by throwing out all the whack conventions and made emcees go back and rethink their careers. Almost 25 years later Rakim still ranks up there in every artists top list of  G.O.A.T. Kanye and Jay-Z may have you watching the throne but all kings and queens ( you can decide who’s who) must answer to a higher power. Paid in Full, is the best and most influential album ever made and there’s nothing wrong with coming in second to it. Foster The People, Florence Welch Pick Best Of 2011

As MTV unveils our year-end favorites, we ask ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ rockers and Florence and the Machine frontwoman for theirs. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Foster The People’s Mark Foster and Cubbie Fink Photo: MTV News In 2011, we saw new acts break through to the big time and formerly new ones continue on their paths toward superstardom. We welcomed the likes of the Weeknd and Frank Ocean to the party and watched with pride as Drake and Adele marched on to greatness. But of all the year’s brand-new stars, few broke out to the degree that L.A. rock trio Foster the People did, thanks in no small part to the success of their smash hit “Pumped Up Kicks,” #7 on MTV’s Best Songs of 2011 . Of all the returning stars, none returned with the power and grace of Florence and the Machine, who wowed critics and fans with their sophomore album, Ceremonials, and stirring single “Shake It Out.” So, as MTV looks back on 2011 , we’re reaching out to a host of acts — who not only dominated the past 12 months, but also came to define them — to get their take on the year in music. And who better to ask than Foster and Florence, two artists who did both … and then some? We spoke to both bands about their favorite songs, albums and artists of 2011, and the rather diverse range of answers sort of sums up the year rather nicely. After all, outside of Adele, was there anything we could all agree on? “I’d say probably my favorite album of the year is Bon Iver’s new album , and I hope he sweeps the Grammys, because the guy’s just killing it right now,” Foster’s Cubbie Fink said. “We’re competing with him!” frontman Mark Foster laughed. “And I hope he wins!” Fink said. “I’ve listened to that album on repeat all year. It’s really amazing.” As far as their favorite artist? Well, Iver ranks pretty high, but of all the acts they listened to this year, none resonated with Foster the People quite like Swedish electro act Little Dragon. “They’ve been a favorite band of mine for a while, and we’ve got to play with them a couple times this year and see them live in a bunch of different settings,” Foster’s Mark Pontius said. “I’m always just so inspired by them live, and the new record that came out this year [ Ritual Union ] is pretty fantastic as well.” Florence Welch was inspired this year by the magnificent murk of Canadian R&B producer/singer Abel Tesfaye, better known as the Weeknd. “My favorite song of the year was the Weeknd, ‘High for This,’ ” she said. “That was this year, [right]? I’ve been obsessively listening to that song for the past few days on repeat. I must’ve listened to it about 700 times.” Of course, when it comes to her favorite artists of 2011, Welch kept things close to home, choosing a pair of British bands — one of which didn’t even release an album this year. “I’m really into this English band called the Alpines; I think they’re really good,” she said. “And I’ve just heard some of the Maccabees’ new stuff, and I’m so excited about their new record coming out, because from the first song I’ve heard, it just sounds amazing. I’m such a big fan of theirs, so I’m really looking forward to that.” All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. Then, come to MTVNews.com at 5 p.m. as we reveal our top picks of the year! Florence And The Machine, Black Keys Rock Out For Charity

Mumford & Sons, Foster the People and others also performed during KROQ’s annual Almost Acoustic Christmas Concert. By Kara Warner Florence Welch performs at KROQ’s Acoustic Christmas concert Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — As impressive and rockin’ as the lineup was for night one of KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas, night two of the Los Angeles-based rock station’s popular event was equally action-packed, with the likes of Foster the People , Florence and the Machine , Mumford & Sons, the Black Keys and six other acts who came together under one roof for a one-night-only sold-out concert engagement at Universal’s Gibson Amphitheatre on Sunday night. Native Los Angeles band Grouplove kicked things off with a festive bang, which included the performances of and lots of dancing to their most recognizable and catchy tunes “Colours” and “Tongue Tied,” which is featured in the latest Apple commercial. They were followed by New Zealand-based electro-pop group the Naked and Famous, who kept things grooving with a series of smoothly synthesized upbeat tracks, the crowd-pleaser being the popular anthem-esque “Young Blood.” 2011 heavy-hitters Foster the People killed it in the number-three slot. They fed off the very enthusiastic reception from the crowd with just as much energy and as many of their Torches chart toppers as they could fit into their half-hour set, which included “Houdini,” “Call It What You Want,” “Helena Beat” and an extended version of “Pumped Up Kicks.” Following Foster were two relatively new bands: Cage the Elephant and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds . Cage delighted the crowd with hits like “Aint No Rest for the Wicked” and “Aberdeen,” as well as several stage dives. Gallagher and his High Flying Birds kept things cool with a few more-mellow tunes that, much to the delight of Oasis fans in attendance, included “Wonderwall” and “Sally.” After their exit, a surge of excitement filled the crowd in anticipation for Florence and the Machine to take the stage. What a difference a year makes: Though Florence played last year’s Acoustic Christmas and received a huge welcome from the audience, it was clear Sunday night that her fanbase has increased tenfold. Florence’s presence has such a transformative effect on her fans — her movement during the songs, the shy smiles she sends out to the masses and that powerhouse voice all have the power to move people to tears. And they did on songs like “If Only for a Night,” “Never Let Me Go” and “No Love, No Light.” Florence was a hard act to follow, that’s for sure, but just as the audience’s energy swelled with anticipation before Welch’s vocals rung out in the air, the excitement levels stayed strong for breakouts Mumford & Sons and the Black Keys. Mumford rocked out so hard during their opening song that lead singer Marcus busted several strings on his guitar. “For those of you who can count, that was three strings I broke. Three,” he told the crowd, pleased with himself. “Yesss!” The spirited folk rockers had the crowd eating out of the palms of their hands with electrifying performances of “Awake My Soul,” “White Blank Page,” new tune “Ghosts That We Knew,” and hits “Little Lion Man” and “The Cave.” Continuing with the hyped-up energy and momentum flowing through the Gibson toward the end of the evening, the Black Keys rocked the house with a perfect mix of old and new. From the familiar “Howlin’ for You,” “Next Girl” and “Tighten Up” to the brand-new “Milk and Honey,” “Sister” and current hit “Lonely Boy,” the guys could have converted almost anyone in attendance to the Church of Keys with the way the audience hung on to every word and guitar stroke. We watched a group of three male fans continue to lose their minds after each song. “This is so sick!” they said. Again and again and again. And frankly, we have to agree. It was sick. Even better? The proceeds from the 22nd annual event will benefit Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center and Para Los Ninos. Related Artists Florence + the Machine The Black Keys

‘Avengers’ Trailer Tops 2011 Marvel Movie Moments

First look and Robert Kirkman’s subsequent commentary top our list of the greatest Marvel moments of the year. By Josh Wigler Samuel L. Jackson in “The Avengers” Photo: Marvel / MTV News With “The Avengers” finally assembling in just a few months and other properties like “Spider-Man” and “Ghost Rider” swinging back into theaters as well, it’s looking like a very bright 2012 for the Marvel brand. But don’t discount the power of 2011: From Captain America throwing his mighty shield to Thor striking lightning at the box office, it was an awesome year for the House of Ideas. From new releases and trailers to casting and crew announcements, these are our 10 favorite Marvel movie moments of 2011. 10. “First Class” Trailer Does Not Suck The “First Class” production horror stories were quite troubling to read about during the latest “X-Men” movie’s development, but that very first trailer more than cooled our fears. Matthew Vaughn’s exploration of mutant-kind in the psychedelic ’60s looked way up our alley based on that one trailer — and thankfully, we weren’t disappointed when the movie arrived a few months later. 9. “Wolverine” Director Drama We’re still nursing our wounds over losing director Darren Aronofsky from “The Wolverine,” but we won’t deny that the drama was interesting to observe. Thankfully, the story has a happy ending: Though Aronofsky won’t sink his claws into the Hugh Jackman superhero flick, “3:10 to Yuma” director James Mangold is coming aboard to save the day. We can’t wait to see what the newly minted “Wolverine” director has up his sleeve. 8. David Slade Finds “Daredevil” Likewise, we’re thoroughly psyched about “Eclipse” and “30 Days of Night” filmmaker David Slade heading to Hell’s Kitchen for Fox’s planned “Daredevil” reboot. Even though we don’t know who he has in mind to play the Man Without Fear, Slade’s plans to adapt Frank Miller’s classic “Born” story line are appealing enough all on their own. 7. “Avengers” Gets Conned We weren’t exactly thrilled about the lack of “Avengers” at San Diego Comic-Con this past summer, but the team at Marvel more than made up for that absence by attending the D-23 Expo and New York Comic Con a few months later. Featuring several of the film’s castmembers and presenting never-before-seen footage to an incredibly lucky crowd, both of the year’s major “Avengers” convention appearances proved to be valuable sources of information for fans of the upcoming superhero epic. 6. Spidey-Vision The “Amazing Spider-Man” teaser trailer released in July got our spider-senses tingling, and not necessarily for the right reasons. The trailer-ending POV sequence was a divisive creative decision, and the darker tone the reboot seems to be striving for didn’t sit well with everybody. That said, our curiosity about Andrew Garfield’s take on Peter Parker has never been higher, and it’s all thanks to that trailer’s existence. 5. Ghost Rider Pees Fire ‘Nuff said. 4. “Thor” and “Captain America” Arrive Finally, after years of waiting for the other core members of the Avengers squad to make their big-screen arrivals, we finally got our wish with this summer’s “Thor” and “Captain America: The First Avenger.” Chrises Hemsworth and Evans absolutely nailed it as the Asgardian warrior and super-soldier, respectively, and their return to theaters in next summer’s “Avengers” can’t possibly come soon enough. 3. “X-Men” Is “First Class” If the “First Class” trailer hadn’t already sold us on the Professor X and Magneto origin story, the movie itself sold us twice. “X-Men” was the surprise comic book hit of the year, if not commercially, then at least creatively. Brimming with phenomenal performances from Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Kevin Bacon, packed with outstanding action (Azazel FTW!) and clever connections to the pre-existing “X-Men” movie universe, “First Class” is my personal pick for best comic book movie of 2011. It’s that good. 2. Earth’s Mightiest Trailer Ever since Nick Fury uttered the words “Avengers initiative” at the end of “Iron Man,” we’ve been waiting for this trailer to drop. Finally, it did, and Joss Whedon’s take on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes looks even more awesome than it did in our dreams. May 4 cannot come soon enough. 1. Earth’s Mightiest Trailer Commentary OK, the only thing better than the “Avengers” trailer? “Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman’s “Avengers” trailer commentary. If you haven’t seen it yet, behold the hilarity for yourself in the video above. Check out everything we’ve got on “The Avengers.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . In Crooked Politician News: Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich Sentenced To 14 Years In Prison!

It’s been a loooonnnng, a long time comin’… the ousted Illinois governor whose three-year battle against criminal charges became a national spectacle, was sentenced to 14 years in prison Wednesday, one of the stiffest penalties imposed for corruption in a state with a history of crooked politics. Blagojevich’s 18 convictions included allegations of trying to leverage his power to appoint someone to President Barack Obama’s vacated Senate seat to raise campaign cash or land a high-paying job. The twice-elected Democrat is now the second former Illinois governor in a row to be sentenced to prison, and the fourth Illinois governor in the last four decades. His Republican predecessor, George Ryan, currently is serving a sentence of 6 1/2 years, also for corruption. Blagojevich had told the judge that he made “terrible mistakes” and acknowledged that he broke the law when he tried to sell an appointment to the Senate seat. Blagojevich’s attorneys admitted for the first time Tuesday that he is guilty of corruption and accepts the verdicts against him, but said the sentence of 15 to 20 years prosecutors wanted was too harsh. The defence also presented heartfelt appeals from Blagojevich’s family, including letters from his wife Patti and one of his two daughters that pleaded for mercy. Damn, they made a lil example out of ol’ Blago didn’t they? He did it, he got caught, so he gets what he deserves, but let’s just keep it funky, all these politicians are a lil corrupt one way or another… Source More On Bossip! Kanye Talks ‘Pursuit Of Awesomeness’ In Backstage Video

‘I wasn’t given this power for no reason,’ rapper says in behind-the-scenes video filmed on Watch the Throne Tour. By Rob Markman Kanye West Photo: Getty Images No one knew what to expect back in October when online entertainment company VoyR announced that it would be partnering with Jay-Z and Kanye West ‘s Watch the Throne Tour to give “access to exclusive, inspirational and shareable stories” with live webcasts. Would fans get sneak peeks backstage? Would part of the concert be streamed in real time? How much of Jay and ‘Ye would we actually see? There were quite a few questions. Now, almost two months later, VoyR drops its first behind-the-scenes video. Kanye narrates the clip, which was recorded at one of the Throne’s November shows at Madison Square Garden in New York. “I always joked that I was like — OK, I’m doing music, but there is a bigger plan for me at a certain point. I wasn’t given this power for no reason and now it’s starting to open up,” ‘Ye says at the start. Yeezy continues to wax poetic about his mission in life, concluding that his goal is to inspire future world leaders who will go on to pay homage at the rapper’s funeral when he dies. All the while, West’s voice-over is coupled with concert footage of him emerging onto the MSG stage atop a four-sided video cube. “I’m on a pursuit of awesomeness,” West continues. “Excellence is the bare minimum.” VoyR charges a fee that grants fans access to a number of different episodes, but in this first video we see the Chi-Town MC backstage getting dressed for the night’s show. While wearing a black shirt, with the same Givenchy designs that appear in the Watch the Throne album insert, Kanye straps a chunky gold bracelet to his wrist, adjusts his in-ear monitor and laces up his Air Yeezy sneakers as he gets ready to hit the stage. The video mostly focuses on the “All of the Lights” MC, and we hardly see Jay at all. Instead we see Kanye marching through the concert halls, greeting visitors like famed Roc-A-Fella engineer Young Guru and Wu-Tang Clansman Raekwon. Hov does show up in one scene, marveling over one young fan’s haircut. The preteen, who made his way backstage, has a WTT logo shaved into his head. He is all smiles as Jay talks to him with Kanye, Bronx, New York, rapper French Montana and Hot 97’s Angie Martinez looking on. “Oh, you outta here, told you,” Jay says, laughing. Kanye continues to narrate, talking about his legacy. “I wanna know when I’m gone that they’ll be 10 people that will go up and grab that mic,” he said about the impression he hopes to leave. “I wanna know that there are warriors now.” Related Photos Exclusive Photos Of The ‘Watch The Throne’ Recording Sessions Jay-Z And Kanye West ‘Watch The Throne’ Listening Related Artists Kanye West Jay-Z

Stephen Covey explaining the charactor ethic and the personality ethic

Stephen Covey´s world famous book ‘The seven habits of highly effective people’ is a masterpiece. In this clip Covey explains how the emphasis of human behavior has shifted in the past 80 or so years from a character based, principal driven ethic, based on :- Integrity, Fidelity, Courage, Compassion, Contribution, Responsibility, & Justice. To a personality based ethic concentrating on techniques,( ie on how to look good, how to dress), or in other words, How to create a good image. Although some personality techniques can be very valid, if you don’t possess, as a base, the Character ethic you will not have the power to create enduring effectiveness. Covey explains this very well in this short clip. http://www.youtube.com/v/ACukmJ_5HSo?version=3&f=videos&app=youtube_gdata Continue reading here: Stephen Covey explaining the charactor ethic and the personality ethic
