Gary Carter, an 11-time All-Star who will forever be associated with the 1986 World Champion New York Mets, has passed away from brain cancer. He was 57. The former baseball legend was diagnosed with an aggressive tumor last year and lost his battle with the illness about two hours ago. His daughter confirmed the news in the following statement: “I am deeply saddened to tell you all that my precious dad went to be with Jesus today at 4:10 p.m. This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to write in my entire life but I wanted you all to know.” Carter, who also played for the Montreal Expos, was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003. He is survived by his wife, three children and three grandchildren.
A tiny Michigan puppy was recently rescued from an underground pipe and became a viral video star … just in time to warm hearts this Valentine’s Day! What’s not to love about a tale of human rescuers and a trapped puppy, bonded by love? Not a lot, people. The story begins in subterranean Detroit. Five days ago, a four-week-old Puggle / Dauschund mix got trapped in an underground pipe, and was stuck overnight. Workers could hear, but not see it. The Michigan Humane Society called plumbers who brought cameras to look inside the pipe and a Bobcat excavator was brought in to dig around the pipes … Puppy Rescued From Underground Pipe Eventually, workers were able to reach the section of the pipe where the precious little critter was squeaking for help … and look what emerged! The dog was in surprisingly good health, just a little dehydrated and cold. Even better news? You can adopt him from the Michigan Humane Society! Even if you’re one of those people who curses February 14 as a useless, Hallmark holiday (i.e. a guy), you’ve gotta be tearing up just a little here. Right? Right. Happy Valentine’s Day!

It’s safe to assume no one would pay for the rights to the Kim Kardashian music video . Seriously, that thing is a joke. But Vivid Entertainment Chairman Steve Hirsch has confirmed to TMZ that, yes, a mysterious buyer is trying to remove the Kim Kardashian sex tape from the open market. Would he give the video up, like Kim gave up her precious flower to Ray J and then acted like it wasn’t a PR ploy all along? Yes, for a high price. “Based on its long term value, it looks like $30 million would be a starting point for a discussion on all of the rights,” Hirsch told the site, adding that he has “no idea” if Kim is behind the offer, like Ray J was behind her, thrusting, during key moments of the tape. We’ll keep readers apprised of this negotiation, but we want to know: How much would you pay for these rights?

Despite the fact that our country and theirs just spearheaded another war, the upcoming British Royal Wedding we can’t imagine too many people really caring about keeps getting headlines. And here’s one that’s actually kinda cool and overflowing with “positivity.” According to Reuters, Prince William and fiancee Kate (or Catherine, as she prefers) Middleton have set up the Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton Charitable Gift Fund, asking well-wishers to donate money to charities they care about instead of gifts. The couple have chosen five causes — Changing Lives through Arts and Sport; Children Fulfilling Their Potential; Help and Care at Home; Support for Service Personnel and Their Families; and Conservation for Future Generations — and 26 charities that fall into one of these categories to receive a portion of the funds raised. Since there are so many charities to choose from, the couple aimed to select charities that are not as well-known but doing important work in line with their passions, the fund’s website explains: “These causes are close to their hearts and reflect the experiences, passions and values of their lives so far.” Several of the charities are based in Canada, Australia and New Zealand where William has focused some of his charitable efforts over the years. The only U.S.-based group selected is PeacePlayers International’s program in Northern Ireland, which was founded ten years ago by Washington residents Brendan and Sean Touhey to get kids together in conflict-torn areas through basketball. In related royal wedding charitable news, Kate Middleton’s infamous see-through dress she wore at a charitable fashion show in college, which reportedly first caught the eye of her prince, sold for more than $125,000 at auction to an unnamed buyer.
