30 Seconds To Mars’ Jared Leto Clears Up ‘Hurricane’ Controversy

Short film wasn’t banned on MTV, contrary to reports. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars’ Jared Leto in “Hurricane” Photo: EMI On Sunday, hours before 30 Seconds to Mars’ long-awaited “Hurricane” short film was set to premiere on MTV and MTV.com, Jared Leto took to his blog to post a lengthy list of “issues” an unnamed network had with the mini-movie. The list was as detailed as it was long (sample entry: “09:17 — Woman’s finger running over other woman’s bottom in G-String and touching anus — COMPLETELY RESTRICTED”), but the point Leto was making was pretty clear. And just in case it wasn’t, he spelled it out in the title of his blog post: ” ‘Hurricane’ Banned From Television.” That led to several reports stating that MTV had banned the “Hurricane” clip, which, as it turns out, wasn’t actually true. In fact, the letter he posted on his blog wasn’t even from MTV, as he explained Wednesday (December 1) in an e-mail to MTV News. “The standards notes I posted are not from MTV USA, they are from another channel entirely. One of MANY, actually, that sent long lists of what was required to be censored in order to secure air time around the world,” he wrote. “MTV’s list was actually rather light compared to others. MOST channels around the world flat out restricted us completely from any ‘daytime play’ at all, relegating the film to graveyard-shift viewing only.” That said, “Hurricane” was pulled from MTV’s on-air rotation subsequent to its premiere, but, as Leto put it, not because the network had banned the film. Rather, as he said in a separate phone interview with MTV News, “There are some edits that need to be made … there is some footage that remained in the cut that was, I guess, overlooked.” In a statement to MTV News, a spokesperson for MTV added that the channel would return “Hurricane” to its on-air lineup once the edit had been made. “Contrary to various erroneous reports, the video has not been banned from MTV,” the statement read. “The video is currently available on MTV.com and will return to on-air rotation shortly.” For his part, Leto remains rather mystified about the entire thing. To hear him tell it, there’s nothing in “Hurricane” that’s particularly controversial, and he never intended for the video to stir up this much outrage. “I never set out to make a controversial film. I didn’t set out to make a film that would get banned — as it has — from several networks around the world, and restricted to nighttime broadcast,” he said. “I didn’t really have those things in mind, I really just set out on this journey and followed my creative instinct to tell the truth. “I think with a piece of work like this, this all becomes part of the process — whether it’s a song or a show or a film — it all brings us on this journey, and, this just happens to be part of the journey of ‘Hurricane,’ this controversial, banned little film,” he added. “I didn’t expect all this to happen, but it’s a good thing that it happens, only because of the conversation that it may provoke, about these sort of things, and looking at art and creative expression and weighing that against protecting the viewers from the exhibition of certain behaviors.” Have you watched “Hurricane” yet? Drake To Head Out On Lightdreams & Nightmares Tour

Toronto MC will kick off multi-city U.S. tour, with openers the Clipse, in September. By Mawuse Ziegbe Drake Photo: MTV News Even with the breakout success of Thank Me Later under his belt, Drake isn’t slowing down this year. He’ll embark on his Lightdreams & Nightmares Tour in September, kicking off the tour with two dates in Miami. A string of dates posted on Drizzy’s October’s Very Own blog on Thursday show that the rapper will be on the tour grind until November. A rep for the Clipse, confirmed to MTV News that the Virginia duo will support Drake on the multi-city U.S. tour. The Toronto MC has spent much of 2010 living on the road. He crisscrossed the U.S. on his eco-friendly Away From Home Tour , which kicked off in April and hit colleges around the nation. Drake also showed his hometown a lot of love with his inaugural OVO Festival over the weekend, which featured appearances from a blue-chip roster of hip-hop talent including Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, Fabolous and Bun B. Jay-Z and Eminem also treated concertgoers to surprise performances. Lightdreams & Nightmares Tour supporting act Clipse have been making noise themselves with the announcement of Pusha T’s upcoming solo mixtape, The Fear of God, slated for a September 14 release. Push has also been building buzz as rumors abound that the MC has joined Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music family, a move that longtime collaborator Pharrell has said he supports. Tour dates are below. However, don’t panic if you don’t see a show in a city near you: A rep for Drake said that additional dates will be announced soon.

Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video: Artists Break It Down

MTV News caught up with art students, who say director Marco Brambilla is ‘pushing the envelope.’ By Rochell Thomas Kanye West Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Ram-horned guards, floating nymphs, knife-wielding attackers, water flowing upward — huh?!? If you can’t make heads or tails out of the groundbreaking “video montage” Kanye West and artist Marco Brambilla produced for West’s “Power,” relax. You’re not alone. After the clip’s Thursday premiere on MTV, Kanye tweeted : “It’s not a video … It’s a moving painting!” During his recent talks with MTV News, Brambilla described the 90-second piece , which is made of 24 layers of video, as a “visual ballet.” Others have called it a “living portrait.” A visual ballet painting? Yeah, that wasn’t good enough for us either. So we consulted people who have devoted their lives to studying, analyzing and producing art, and they’re confused too. “What stood out to me was his ridiculous big chain. I don’t know what that was all about,” photographer Gianna Leofalcon said about the six-figure, gold medallion that depicts one of the oldest Egyptian deities, Horus. “If that [chain] was real, he wouldn’t be standing up,” joked painter and illustrator Misha T. “It symbolizes power,” said graphic artist and rapper Wordspit. “Back in the day, [Egyptians] used to wear nothing but gold jewelry, and that was a sense of power with them. I feel like it symbolizes that.” Fellow graphic artist Suede Jury agreed: “The chain is larger than life. Everything about the video is larger than life.” “Yo, this dude, Marco. He’s bananas, son,” said painter Ibrahim Baaith. “And what’s cool is that he’s shooting all this and incorporating it into, like, a painting. He’s not just taking classical images and just smashing it together. He’s completely original, and I like where he and Kanye took it. He’s definitely pushing the envelope.” The problem comes when you ask which direction the envelope is being pushed. Some say it permanently raised the bar for hip-hop videos, but Leofalcon said when it comes to male/female relations, “Power” goes the same old route. “What are all the women doing below him?” she asked. “What message is that sending? We’re already dealing with inequality between men and women, particularly in hip-hop. I’m sick and tired of having a bunch of girls surrounding a man in videos in general. “I would challenge Kanye to have a woman by his side to give the message that there is equality between him and a beautiful woman,” she added. “He’s showing his position of power. He indulges in the women,” Wordspit countered. “I could understand that you want him to have a woman by his side. It probably would have looked cool. … But at the same time, Kanye is a loner. Kanye feels like he’s alone. And I think that was one of the purposes of this video — to just show that even though I’m in a position of power. I’m still mortal.” Misha T broke down the video like this: “The song is called ‘Power.’ When you’re on top, everybody’s trying to bring you down to claim that spot. He’s trying to show you this picture-perfect world where, yeah, you have goddesses surrounding you. But at the same time, you have guys trying to stab you in the back.” And that sword over his head? It’s the Sword of Damocles. Don’t even get us started on that … What did you take from Kanye’s “Power” video? Share your thoughts in the comments! Related Artists Kanye West

Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane Filmed Parts For ‘We Be Steady Mobbin’ ‘ Separately

Exclusive clip shows Gucci talking to Ciara about shooting video, which premieres Sunday on MTV Jams. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: C. Flanigan/ FilmMagic Lil Wayne got his sentencing in New York delayed couple of times this year. But if he’d seen just one more postponement for his one-year prison term, he and Gucci Mane’s work on the “We Be Steady Mobbin’ ” video probably would have been a bit easier. As it was the Wayne turned himself in just a week before Gucci was freed from prison. And so the two had to film their parts for the clip, which is scheduled to premiere on MTV Jams this Sunday, separately. “We shooting my part, but Wayne already shot his part before going to jail,” Gucci Mane told Ciara during a phone call in an exclusive clip provided to MTV News by DJ Scoob Doo. Scoob Doo directed the “We Be Steady Mobbin’ ” video, and behind-the-scenes footage of the clip will be available on his forthcoming DVD “Entourage: Fetti Holmes Edition.” The project serves as a preview to his and Lil Wayne’s collaborative DVD effort “The Nino Brown Story Pt. 3.” “I chose the title of ‘Entourage’ because this is — in my opinion — the heavy hitters of the game,” Scoob told MTV News about the preview project, which will include footage of Lil Wayne, Jadakiss and Drake. “It happens that I have personal relationships with them. It made sense not to sit on the footage, not to sit on the exclusive content. A lot of people are waiting for that ‘Nino Brown Story’ with Lil Wayne. But this is something you can watch to keep you in suspense and satisfy that hunger.” Related Artists Lil Wayne Ciara Gucci Mane

Watch Justin Bieber Rap In Exclusive ‘Baby’ Live Performance Sneak Peek

Check out this preview of Bieber’s March 23 MTV.com performance. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber While fans are anxiously awaiting Justin Bieber’s sophomore effort, My World 2.0, we have a sneak peek of an exclusive performance set to premiere on MTV.com next Tuesday, the day of the album’s release. In this preview , Bieber sits down for an acoustic version of his hit “Baby” and shows fans a different side of himself. On “Baby,” Bieber is usually joined by Ludacris, but for this version, the crooner takes over Luda’s part and spits the rhyme himself. Though Bieber has told MTV News that he has no plans to get into the rap game — even though he chills with guys like Luda, Diddy and Drake — his MCing skills aren’t half bad. Previously, Ludacris has talked about how he found inspiration to write lyrics for the teen star’s song about young love, admitting that it is a lot different than writing rhymes for his own albums. “He’s talking about [how] he’s mad that his girl left him and he still cares for her,” he said. “As soon as I heard it, I knew it was a hit, I just had to figure out how I could get on a record with a 15-year-old. So I sat there and said, ‘Let me reminisce on the past,’ and that’s basically how I stepped on the record. And I guarantee you, mark my word, that’s going to be one of the biggest songs of the year 2010.” Bieber also explained how he ended up on a track with the rapper. “Well, [Ludacris and I] both live in Atlanta. I met him a year prior to this and we figured it was a perfect collaboration for him, so we invited him out to do it,” Bieber said. “No, [he didn’t give me any advice]. I mean, he’s a rapper; he doesn’t sing. No, [I’m not planning on rapping]. Not at all. Nope.” Related Artists Justin Bieber
