Avenged Sevenfold Bump Eminem From Billboard #1

A7X’s Nightmare ends Recovery ‘s five week reign. By Gil Kaufman Avenged Sevenfold drummer The Rev Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Last week, we wondered how long Eminem ‘s Recovery could hold on to the pole position on the Billboard 200, predicting that it might run the board until Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream drops on August 24. Someone forgot to tell Avenged Sevenfold . The SoCal hard rockers have managed to end Slim Shady’s five-week run at #1 with the best debut of their career. Their fifth album, Nightmare , debuts at the top on next week’s chart on sales of 163,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That was just enough to edge out Em, who drops to #2 (159,000 units shifted),as Recovery edged toward the 2 million mark and he celebrated his nine VMA nominations . There are no other debuts this week, and the rest of the top 10 just features a shuffling of the cards. Last week’s #2, Rick Ross ‘ Teflon Don, only falls one slot to #3, but with a 64 percent sales drop-off, the Bawse sold considerably less product (63,000) in his second week on the charts. Justin Bieber ‘s My World 2.0 moves up a few to #4 (38,000), Drake ‘s Thank Me Later drops one (#5, 34,000), Kidz Bop 18 is down one to #6 (29,000), Lady Antebellum ‘s still-strong Need You Now is up two (#7, 27,000), Sheryl Crow ‘s 100 Miles From Memphis drops 5 to #8 (24,000), VMA queen Lady Gaga ‘s The Fame is up to #9 (24,000) and NOW 34 is down two spots to #10 (22,000). Veteran rapper Tech N9ne ‘s collabos album The Gates Mixed Plate — featuring Big Scoob , Glasses Malone , Devin the Dude and Brotha Lynch Hung — debuts at #13 (17,000). Fat Joe ‘s The Darkside Vol. 1 has a soft landing at #27 (12,000). Further down the line, R&B vocal group Dru Hill celebrate Indrupendence Day with a #30 bow on sales of 11,000, and new indie buzz act Best Coast sail into the #36 spot with Crazy for You (10,000). The iTunes charts tell a similar story, as Eminem holds on to the #1 slot on the singles tally with the smash Rihanna collabo, “Love the Way You Lie,” while A7X takes over the top spot on the album list. Nightmare is followed by Em’s Recovery , Ross’ Teflon Don , Drake’s Thank Me Later , Gaga’s Fame , an iTunes session from former 10,000 Maniacs singer Natalie Merchant at #6, the Black Keys ‘ Brothers , Mumford & Sons ‘ Sigh No More , the Hans Zimmer score to “Inception” and B.o.B ‘s B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray . While iTunes does not provide detailed sales data, it’s clear Em’s hold on the top of the singles heap is safe, as the rest of the top 10 is essentially the same as it was last week with just one new title, Usher ‘s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” at #6. Otherwise, it is: Taio Cruz ‘s “Dynamite” (#2), Enrique Iglesias ‘ “I Like It” (#3), Katy Perry ‘s “Teenage Dream” (#4), Perry’s “California Gurls” (#5), B.o.B’s “Airplanes” (#7), Mike Posner ‘s “Cooler Than Me” (#8), Jason Derulo ‘s “Ridin’ Solo” (#9) and Eminem’s “Not Afraid.” It’s not likely that Eminem will retake the top spot next week, as the Arcade Fire ‘s buzzed-about The Suburbs is due to debut, along with new albums from Bun B , Buckcherry and a Lady Gaga remix album.

Justin Bieber’s ‘CSI’ Story Line Will Be ‘Explosive’

He’ll play ‘a troubled young man … whose hard-luck life has left him scarred and angry,’ executive producer tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber tweets a photo from his acting debut on CSI Photo: CBS/ Twitpic With a 3-D movie about his life in the works, fans will get a sneak peek at Justin Bieber ‘s acting abilities when he makes his network TV acting debut on the “CSI” season premiere next month. It turns out, Justin, a longtime fan of the show, really wanted a part on the series. “I got a call that Justin really was a fan of ‘CSI’ [and] that’s all I have to hear, and so it just was perfect timing,” executive producer Carol Mendelsohn told MTV News about casting the singer in the September 23 episode. “Justin was looking to make his dramatic acting debut. We had an incredible role for a young actor in [our season premiere], so it just seemed like the perfect marriage.” Bieber showed up on set for one day of work, and he managed to impress everyone in the cast with his work ethic. He is part of one very juicy story arc that will likely have viewers coming back later in the season to see what happens next. (Justin shoots again later on in the season for an episode set to air in February.) “There was one day that Justin had available and that was the day he came to ‘CSI’ and filmed his four scenes for the premiere,” she continued. “We will introduce his character in the premiere in September and then it will be a character arc and we will see him again playing Jason McCann again in February.” In a photo tweeted by Bieber, his character is seen handcuffed. So why the cuffs? Well, we got some answers from Mendelsohn. “He’s a troubled young man, raised in the foster-care system, whose hard-luck life has left him scarred and angry,” she explained. “When we first meet Jason, we meet him at a community center where he’s giving a testimonial in honor of a man who takes Jason and his older brother in when they had no one else, and that man is now in jail and Jason’s brother is out for revenge and looking for payback. “And the CSIs are looking for the brother and Jason is caught in the middle,” Mendelsohn teased. “At the end of the episode, we’re left with the question: Is Jason a good kid stuck in a bad situation or is Jason a bad kid hiding behind his cuteness? You can see why Justin was such a perfect choice to play this role. … It’s an explosive story.” Are you excited for Justin to appear on “CSI”? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Justin Bieber

Zac Efron, ‘Charlie St. Cloud’ Cast Recall Ghostly Encounters

‘Everyone’s had those things they can’t necessarily explain,’ Efron said at L.A. premiere of ghost drama. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron at the “Charlie St. Cloud” premiere on Tuesday Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Zac Efron’s new drama, “Charlie St. Cloud,” is all about ghosts. It revolves around Charlie (Efron), who works at a cemetery to be close to his dead younger brother, Sam (Charlie Tahan). Eventually he must choose between being close to his brother’s ghost or pursuing love. When MTV News caught up with Efron and the rest of the “St. Cloud” crew at the Los Angeles premiere of the film, which opens July 30, we wanted to know about their spookiest real-life ghost encounters. “Nothing really, but I think everyone’s had those things they can’t necessarily explain at one point or another,” Efron said. “No, I don’t have any ghost stories for you.” Co-star Donal Logue feels that at the very core of life there is a spiritual something. “Every minute of every day is like from [protozoal] soup, man. How did this happen?” he explained. “You know what I’m saying?” Spirituality seemed to be the theme among the cast and guests at the premiere. Stephen Baldwin explained his take on ghosts, saying, “I have real-life spiritual encounters every day, but not with ghosts: with the Holy Ghost.” Similarly, Amanda Crew added, “You know, I’ve never seen any ghost, but I definitely believe that there’s some sort of something spiritual out there. I mean, there has to be. There’s been too many times in my life that should have gone another way that there’s someone looking out for me.” Director Burr Steers admitted that there are otherworldly beings that keep him up at night. “In the middle of the night, when you hear things clanging around, I’m a coward and imagine that there are things at work,” he said. “But here, on the red carpet, no.” Matt Ward shared one of his ghostly encounters. “This acting community that I live in, we actually used to be in this building, and there was a ghost in there,” he recalled. “It was weird. You would just be sitting in a room and you would see this little skitter by and that’s probably one of the only experiences that I’ve had other than [when] I used to mess with my friends a lot when I was younger. I would always pretend to be possessed right after we’d watch a scary movie.” That seems like nothing compared to one very spooky moment Augustus Prew once had. “I was doing this job in Manchester and I was staying in this hotel that used to be an old Victorian mill,” he recalled. “About two o’clock in the morning I woke up and it was really cold in the room, And there was this little kid at the end of my bed. It was really weird and it scared the life out of me and then he disappeared.” Do you believe in ghosts? Tell us in the comments! Fashion Face-Off: Kristin Cavallari vs. Stephanie Pratt

The Hills stars Kristin Cavallari and Stephanie Pratt won’t win a lot of fashion awards for these. If there even are any fashion awards. That’s unclear. In any case, where do we even begin? At the Salt premiere in Hollywood, Kristin debuted a really short dress with spiked shoulder pads. Yeah. Wow. Stephanie, meanwhile, attended the premiere of The Extra Man in New York wearing the drapes from a house with 1970s decor. Very chic … we guess. Who do you think looked less bad? Vote below! Who’s got the better look?

Liz Phair on How TV Scoring Saved Her Love of Music

Liz Phair has spent 17 years in the recording industry as a saint and a “sellout,” a cavalier grandmaster of articulation whose monotone delivery and Stones-y dispassion on Exile in Guyville , her breakout 1993 album, inspired countless confessional female singer-songwriters. Now, after being declared a pop misfit with her self-titled album in 2003, Phair returns to her fringe roots with Funstyle , a record she released online herself July 3. In it, she discusses her new gig, one that’s already garnered her an ASCAP award: television composer.

Will This Sexy, Misleading Mad Men Promo Yield Record Ratings?

With the season premiere of Mad Men just days away, AMC has done its best to make viewers hoping to hitch a ride onto the critically acclaimed drama feel welcome. That means airing a marathon of the best episodes from season three last night and scheduling Michael Clayton to run before the premiere (so they can capitalize on the “Jon Hamm is the Next George Clooney!” movement). But does this admittedly killer promo take things just a tad too far?

‘Inception’ Stars Reveal Secrets Behind Epic Van Scene

Cillian Murphy, Ken Watanabe and Dileep Rao describe the scene that took ‘months, off and on’ to shoot. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Kara Warner Cillian Murphy Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images “Inception” is one of those movies that’s impossible to talk about with people who haven’t seen it and desperately want to avoid spoilers. To discuss any given scene in this thriller about the world of dreams — no matter where it takes place in the story, no matter how minor it might seem on the surface — you have to reveal whole swaths of plot secrets. But the mere fact that we want to talk about “Inception” — however tricky it may be — speaks to just how mind-bending Christopher Nolan’s epic really is. Thus, when MTV News hit the red carpet premiere for “Inception” on Tuesday, we had to ask the stars to reveal the secrets behind some of our favorites scenes. Read on for some insight, but turn back now if you want to avoid some meaty spoilers! First some setup: In “Inception,” Leonardo DiCaprio heads a team that can enter another person’s dreams and either steal a secret or implant a memory without the person ever knowing. For their big mission, they create a series of three different dream worlds, each existing independently yet connected by a subconscious thread. In each successive dream level, time moves progressively slower, so that what only takes, say, five seconds on level one takes maybe 60 minutes on level three. Still with us? OK, that brings us to a wicked chase scene on level one. DiCaprio and his team hop in a van as they flee some nameless assassins. As they drive, they descend to the second dream level but continue to exist in the van, so during a few-minute chase sequence, hours and hours pass on dream levels two and three — leading up to a point where the van plunges off a bridge and takes about an hour to hit the water. The van’s descent in super-slow motion was a massive undertaking to film, the “Inception” stars told us at the premiere. “Months, off and on,” said Dileep Rao, whose character drives the rest of DiCaprio’s team in the van. “We’d shoot it one day, go off and shoot something else. Then shoot another piece of [the van]. It was so complex and there were so many locations and so many different moves I have to do. It’s the stuff that makes or breaks that last sequence.” To capture that last sequence of the van falling off the bridge, Rao said, “they shot [the van] out of a cannon.” The shots of the actors suspended within the van in slow motion took a “whole day shooting and seven times to take,” co-star Ken Watanabe recalled. Eventually, the van lands and sinks under water. “The underwater stuff was challenging because the default setting is to panic,” Cillian Murphy explained. “And when they ask you to act, it’s a bit of an ask .” The actors had to hold their breath for “four or five minutes” as they sucked air from scuba tanks, Murphy said. But they pulled off the sequences, and trust us when we tell you it is one the coolest things you’ve ever seen on the big screen. “[Nolan] was very precise with us, and we nailed it,” said Rao. “I think it was awesome.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Inception.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
