The Wanted, Nina Dobrev Applaud Obama’s Same-Sex Marriage Stance

‘Vampire Diaries’ star tells MTV News, ‘I’m glad that he’s supporting gay marriage, and hopefully others will follow suit.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Audrey Kim The Wanted Photo: Getty Images In the days since President Obama spoke up in support of same-sex marriage , celebrities have applauded the leader of the free world for his stance on the issue. Since the president’s interview with ABC News on Wednesday, many celebs ranging from Neil Patrick Harris to George Clooney have made it clear that they are pro-Obama. And, it seems, Obama’s message is spreading internationally, as famous people around the world are also giving him props. “I didn’t see the announcement when he made it, but I’ve heard obviously a lot about it, and I think it’s great that that man, the President of the United States, who is influential, who people really admire and listen to, is making such a statement, such a sort of controversial statement,” “Vampire Diaries” star Nina Dobrev shared at the launch of the “Like Her, Like Me” Seventeen magazine campaign where she debuted her “got milk?” ad. The Canadian native added, “I don’t think [it] should be controversial at this point because we’re living in the 21st Century, but I’m glad that he’s supporting gay marriage, and hopefully others will follow suit.” Much like Dobrev, British boy banders the Wanted are also giving two thumbs up to Obama. “I think it was a logical step, about time,” Jay McGuiness said. “I wish it was church-led in my opinion, but I don’t care, it’s out there now. Well done, Obama and Co! Even if it was for the right or wrong reasons, it’s definitely the right outcome.” McGuiness is referring to some criticism that the president made the announcement hot on the heels of his re-election campaign, after years of not taking a firm stance on the issue. At a press conference for “America’s Got Talent” on Thursday, judge Howard Stern noted that he wishes more will come from Obama’s declaration. “My feelings are very clear on this,” he said. “I wish the president actually had gone further. I wish he had said he was going to back some legislation on the national level.” Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton mirrored Stern’s sentiments when he spoke to MTV News the same day. “It was definitely happy news, but I almost don’t want to applaud him too much, because I wish he would have done this a long time ago,” Hilton said. “Having said that, it’s better that he did it than not. He could have waited until after the election. However, it’s clearly a calculated move in that he felt confident that this won’t hurt his chances at getting re-elected, and that’s why he did it.” Share your thoughts on this story in the comments below! President Obama $15 Million Hollywood Fundraiser Hosts Robert Downey Jr., Tobey Maguire

‘Are we a country that includes everybody and give everybody a shot and treats everybody fairly?’ Obama tells the crowd about his gay marriage stance. By Gil Kaufman President Obama arrives in Los Angeles to attend a fundraiser at the home of George Clooney Photo: AFP/Getty Images President Obama again affirmed his support of gay marriage
on Thursday night at a star-studded Los Angeles fundraiser at the home of George Clooney. The event, which reportedly raised a record $15 million for the Obama re-election campaign fund, was attended by around 150 guests who paid $40,000, along with two women who won tickets by pledging $3 in an online raffle. Speaking in front of an audience that was likely to be receptive
to the message, Obama expanded on his view of gay marriage. “Obviously, yesterday we made some news,” he said to what was reported by The Los Angeles Times to be enthusiastic. Obama was referring to an ABC interview in which he revealed that he now personally supports same-sex marriage, which made him the first sitting president to ever do so. “It was a logical extension of what America is supposed to be. It grew directly out of this difference in visions: Are we a country that includes everybody and gives everybody a shot and treats everybody fairly and is that going to make us stronger? Are we welcoming to immigrants? Are we welcoming to people who aren’t like us — does that make us stronger? I believe it does. So that’s what’s at stake.” The comments reiterated his earlier embrace of gay marriage, which was applauded by celebrity blogger Perez Hilton
, who told MTV on Thursday that the news was happy, if a bit late in coming. “I wish he would have done this a long time ago,” Hilton said. The gathering was organized by DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, featured food by famed chef-to-the-stars Wolfgang Puck and took place in a large tent on the basketball court outside Clooney’s huge Tudor-style Hollywood home. Among the stars in attendance were Robert Downey Jr., Tobey Maguire, Jack Black, Salma Hayek, Billy Crystal, Barbra Streisand and husband James Brolin and Clooney’s girlfriend, Stacey Kiebler. Fresh off his joke-filled appearance at the Correspondents dinner in D.C., the president went for laughs again, chiding the host that his famous 2008 “Hope” campaign poster was taken from a photo of him sitting next to Clooney when Obama was a U.S. Senator. “This is the first time that George Clooney has ever been PhotoShopped out of a picture,” Obama said. “Never happened before, never happen again.” And while the night had a positive tone, Obama acknowledged to his high-dollar donors that the upcoming election is going to be much more difficult than the 2008 contest. “This is going to be harder than it was the last time,” he said. “2008, in some ways, was lighting in a bottle … So we’re going to have to fight against cynicism and a belief that maybe things can’t happen and maybe the game is rigged, what’s the point. That’s what we’re going to be fighting against this time.”

Bristol Palin Slams Gay Marriage, President Obama, Glee, Dora the Explorer

Apparently President Obama’s support for gay marriage , which he announced yesterday, does not sit well with Bristol Palin. Nor does the Fox hit Glee . In an anti-gay marriage blog post aimed at Obama’s first statement advocating same-sex marriage rights, Sarah Palin’s daughter does not hold back. In short, Bristol feels Barack is a stupid man, a weak leader and a bad father. Why? Because of his daughters’ role in his evolving gay marriage stance. “While it’s great to listen to your kids’ ideas, there’s also a time when dads simply need to be dads,” says the 21-year-old spawn of Sarah. “In this case, it would’ve been helpful for him to explain to Malia and Sasha that while her friends parents are no doubt lovely people, that’s not a reason to change thousands of years of thinking about marriage.” The unwed mother, whose baby daddy is totally MIA, continues, “As great as her friends may be – we know that in general kids do better growing up in a mother/father home. Ideally, fathers help shape their kids’ worldview.” Unless they’re Levi Johnston. “I guess we can be glad that Malia and Sasha aren’t younger,” she goes on , “Or perhaps today’s press conference might have been about appointing Dora the Explorer as Attorney General because of her success in stopping Swiper the Fox.” “Dads should lead their family in the right ways of thinking. In this case, it would’ve been nice if the President would’ve helped shape their thoughts instead of merely reflecting what many teenagers think after one too many episodes of Glee . ” So in summation, Bristol Palin turned out so well because her parents are heterosexual, President Obama is a pushover who lets Malia and Sasha script his policy statements, and watching Glee might make you gay. Thanks B! Should same-sex couples have the right to marry?

Ellen Commends President Obama’s Announcement in Support of Marriage Equality

President Obama Announces Support For Gay Marriage

President Barack Obama today became the first sitting president to announce support for same-sex marriage, making his position on the subject clear. In a sit-down interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts, Obama completed what has been a long and often dubious “evolution” on the controversial topic. “I’ve always been adamant that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly,” Obama told Roberts in an interview that will air Thursday. Obama’s announcement, on the heels of North Carolina’s Amendment 1 ban on gay marriage in that state, was made after much soul-searching. “Over the course of several years, I have talked to friends and family and neighbors, and I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together,” he said. “When I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married .” The statement constitutes an act of political bravery on the president’s behalf, as 29 states have now banned gay marriage constitutionally. It’s also a major victory for the gay rights community, which has been pushing him to declare his support for marriage equality for years. Just last Sunday, Vice President Joseph Biden told NBC’s Meet The Press that he was personally comfortable with same-sex marriage. With the issue back in the news, the pressure on Obama intensified. The White House originally insisted over the weekend that Biden clarified his statement as being in reference to civil rights for gay couples. But the explanation was largely dismissed as a political dodge, a way for Obama to support for marriage equality without having to declare it himself. No longer. The president finally chose to speak out Wednesday in the wake of the North Carolina ban, with the White House hastily scheduling an interview. “It’s interesting, some of this is also generational,” the president said. “You know when I go to college campuses, sometimes I talk to college Republicans who think that I have terrible policies on the economy, on foreign policy, but are very clear that when it comes to same sex equality or, you know, believe in equality.” “They are much more comfortable with it. You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents and Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently.” “It doesn’t make sense to them and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.” The president’s support of same-sex marriage will have little political impact, at least from a practical standpoint, as most states have tackled the issue legislatively and/or judicially, outside the realm of the federal government. Symbolically, the impact is much more profound. As the first president to support marriage equality, he sets the bar for its social and political acceptance and retains the ability to shape public opinion further. What do you think of President Obama’s support for gay marriage?

For Discussion: Former DNC Chair Says Women And Latinos Are Terrified Of The GOP, Call Michele Bachmann “Ridiculous”

Howard Dean Says Women And Latinos Are Terrified By The GOP Any women here plan on voting for Mitt Romney?? Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean said Sunday that the policies promoted by the Republican Party have women and Latinos “terrified.” “Women are terrified of what the Republicans are talking about. They’re talking about basically stripping away their ability to have insurance pay for their birth control pills,” Dean said on “Face the Nation.” “Latinos are terrified of the Republicans, because they seem to have a total tin ear when it comes to the basic needs of treating people with dignity. “For Michele Bachmann to go on there and claim that women are going to vote for Mitt Romney is perfectly ridiculous,” Dean said, referring to the Republican congresswoman who also appeared on “Face the Nation” Sunday. Dean also suggested that “the average American thinks that Mitt Romney doesn’t care about them. Here’s a guy who’s building, during a campaign, a mansion in Malibu with an elevator for his car,” Dean said to Bob Schieffer. “He had a Swiss bank account and he invests in the Cayman Islands. I don’t think we’ve ever elected a president who has invested in the Cayman Islands as a tax dodge before. “This candidacy is a shipwreck”, Dean said, “and for Michele Bachmann to go on there and claim that woman are going to vote for Mitt Romney is perfectly ridiculous.” Responding to Bachmann’s charge that President Obama will be running on a record of “broken promises,” Dean defended the president, saying he has been successful in both the economy and foreign policy. “I think we’ve made some real progress,” he said. “Osama Bin Laden is dead. We have our troops out of Iraq. Our troops are coming out of Afghanistan. These are things that are important to the United States.” The former governor added: “The fact of the matter is that Barack Obama has created jobs, 4 million of them since he became President. The economy is in much better shape than it was when he took office.” “I think that’s a pretty good record for President Obama to run on.” Thoughts on this?? Sidenote: $MH at “Money” Mitt Romney. He got it all the way poppin!!!! Source
