Kim Jong Un: Voted Person of the Year 2012 By Time Readers!

Kim Jong Un is Time’s 2012 Person of the Year … if the magazine’s online readers have their say anyway. He was chosen by a landslide margin, hilariously. Time readers picked North Korean leader over President Barack Obama, Gabrielle Douglas, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Jon Stewart in an online vote. It doesn’t mean Kim will be named Time’s official Person of the Year 2012, which is announced December 19; that call is entirely the Time editorial board’s. Still, the son and successor of the late Kim Jong Il – who was also named the Onion’s Sexiest Man Alive earlier this fall – received 5.6 million votes. That’s 5.6 million more than either Kim ever got in North Korea! Axis of Evil BURN!!!! “We don’t make our selection based on the poll results,” Time executive editor Radhika Jones noted in the blog post that announced the winners. “But it’s always interesting to see where some of our preferred candidates end up.” As has been the case in previous years, users of 4chan launched a campaign to manipulate the poll, pushing North Korea’s supreme leader to the top. Rounding out the top five: Stewart (2.4 million votes) Undocumented immigrants (1.55 million) Douglas (1.51 million) Burmese leaders Aung San Suu Kyi and Thein Sein (1.48 million) If Kim is chosen as Time’s Person of the Year, it wouldn’t be a totally ridiculous choice Shrouded in mystery, the 28-year-old rose out of nowhere over the past year to become one of the world’s most powerful and last remaining despots. More than likely, though, it’ll go to Obama or someone more conventional. Or no one specifically. Sometimes the Person of the Year is not one particular person. In 2011, for example, it was “The Protester.” In 2006, it was “You.” The Person of the Year, instituted in 1927, is “bestowed by the editors on the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill.” Also, the person who “embodied what was important about the year.” Barbara Walters cast her own vote this week: David Petraeus .

R.I.P: 16-Year-Old Florida Girl Hangs Herself After Online Bullies Ask ‘Can You Kill Yourself Already?’

So sad … Teenage Girl Commits Suicide Because Of Online Bullies Jessica Laney, 16, of Hudson, Florida, was a popular soccer-playing high schooler in her real-life, but when she got home to the privacy of her computer she had a busy social media alter-ego on sites such as Tumblr, and Ask.fm, where people can ask questions and make anonymous comments… Via RadarOnline reports: The student at Fivay High School bantered with other users on the site under the name Jessica Marieee1, and while many posts were about boys, songs and make-up, some took on a much more sinister tone, calling her fat and a loser. One visitor asked her, “Can you kill yourself already?” and another commented “nobody even cares about you.” While many of her real friends believe that the taunts from Internet trolls are to blame for Jessica’s death by hanging, an official from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office says neither Laney’s parents nor Laney’s boyfriend were aware of any bullying in her life. “Our thoughts and prayers go to the Jessica Marie Laney’s family as they deal with their loss. (Pasco County Sheriff’s Office) is not aware of any formal complaint to the Pasco School District or PSO about her being bullied,” said Doug Tobin, Public Information Officer for the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. However, some telling online comments from Jessica herself on Ask.fm hint at deep rifts in her home-life and trouble with her family. “I miss so many people, but honestly I miss my brother, not the person he is now, but the one he use to be,” she wrote two days before her death. “I know he doesn’t miss me, but it still hurts to know he will never come back and more than likely never talk to me again.” Many of Jessica’s friends are now campaigning to have the controversial website taken down and have launched a petition on Change.org, that has already garnered thousands of signatures. “After I saw that, I thought they should just delete the website. Nobody should have that, to have people say stuff like that on there,” said school pal Laney Torres. The old adage “sticks and stones will break bones, but words will never hurt” is so far from the truth. Parents need to be into their kids business, all of it. Our deepest sympathies to this young girl’s family.

Did You Know? Fed Announces Big Hold On Rates Until The Shady GOP Stops Hatin’ On POTUS’ Stimulus Plans!

This may sound like great news… but don’t be fooled by Ben Bernanke’s azz dressed in sheep’s’ clothing. According to The Huffington Post , the hold on rates may help stimulate the economy, but it’s going to hurt millions who are retired and others who live off of savings. The Federal Reserve said Wednesday that it plans to keep interest rates ultra-low even after unemployment falls close to a normal level – which it thinks could take three more years. For the first time, the Fed made clear to investors and consumers that it will link its actions to specific economic markers. As long as inflation remains tame, the central bank said it could keep key short-term rates near zero, even after unemployment returns to a more typical rate. Previously, the Fed said it expected to keep interest rates at record lows at least through mid-2015. Now it expects rates to stay low at least until unemployment drops below 6.5 percent – a threshold the bank believes may not be crossed until the end of 2015. Analysts said the Fed’s new guidance will make it easier for companies, investors and consumers to make financial decisions because they will have a clearer grasp of when borrowing costs will begin to rise. “This approach is superior” to setting a timetable for a possible rate increase, Chairman Ben Bernanke said at a news conference after the Fed held a two-day policy meeting and issued a statement. “It is more transparent and will allow the markets to respond quickly and promptly to changes” in the Fed’s economic outlook. Though the Fed’s low interest-rate policies are intended to boost borrowing, spending and stock prices, they also hurt millions of retirees and others who depend on income from savings. Bernanke made clear that even after unemployment falls below 6.5 percent, the Fed might decide that it needs to keep stimulating the economy. Other economic factors will also shape its policy decisions, he said. Economists regard a normal unemployment rate as 6 percent or less. “The Fed has become more explicit and more transparent,” said Steven Wood, chief economist at Insight Economics. “This should provide the markets with much more clarity around monetary policy action in the upcoming year.” Still, Bernanke warned that none of the Fed’s actions could outweigh the economic pain that would be caused by sharp tax increases and government spending cuts that are set to kick in next month. The standoff between President Barack Obama and Republican lawmakers over how to resolve the “fiscal cliff” is already hurting the economy, in part by reducing consumer and business confidence, he said. We’re not surprised that some people are blaming Barack on this one…even though he doesn’t control the Federal Reserve. While Bernanke holds rates so low, older working folks aren’t earning any interest on their 401k’s and, IF the unemployment rate ever drops below 6.5%, that 3% interest everyone’s been enjoying in the housing market is going to jump up to ‘normal’ again and then what?? Another real estate collapse? Watch out folks! Images via tumblr

Kush Chronic-les: Former President Jimmy Carter Says Legalization Of That Sticky-Icky Is GOOD Because Current Laws Are Too Harsh Toward Minorities

Jimmy Carter Says The Mary Jane Should Be Legalized Because The Laws Via Huffington Post Former President Jimmy Carter gave a full-throated endorsement of state efforts to legalize marijuana during an appearance at a CNN forum aired on Tuesday. Carter, who as president supported an era of marijuana decriminalization in the mid-1970s, told CNN’s Suzanne Malveaux that he was “in favor” of states that were taking steps to legalize the drug. “I think it’s OK,” Carter said. “I don’t think it’s going to happen in Georgia yet, but I think we can watch and see what happens in the state of Washington for instance, around Seattle, and let the American government and let the American people see does it cause a serious problem or not.” The ex-POTUS goes on to say: Speaking about the issues of an anti-drug system focused on enforcement, Carter suggested that large incarceration rates, especially among minorities, were being perpetuated by harsh punishments for marijuana possession. “It’s a major step backward, and it ought to be reversed, not only in America, but around the world,” Carter argued, later going on to say that nations such as Portugal, which decriminalized all drugs in 2000, could be a model for the United States to look toward in the future. Jimmy has a point, there are a LOT of brothas (AND sistas) in jail for what most would consider “minor” Mary Jane offenses. Image via Carter Center

Bolitics: ATL Mayor Kasim Reed Confirms Support Of Gay Marriage

ATL Mayor Kasim Reed Confirms Support Of Gay Marriage Following the foot steps of states like Washington, D.C., New York and Massachusetts, ATL mayor Kasim Reed has now confirmed that he is in support of gay marriage. via Politico In another sign of the rapid evolution of the politics of gay marriage, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed announced Tuesday that he supports marriage equality. “It is well known that I have gone through a good bit of reflection on this issue, but listening to the stories of so many people that I know and care about has strengthened my belief that marriage is a fundamental right for everyone. Loving couples, regardless of their sexual orientation, should have the right to marry whomever they want. By signing this resolution, I pledge my support to marriage equality for same-sex couples, consistent with equal protection under the law provided under the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution.” Reed’s statement comes seven months after he explained that he is “still wrestling with my own personal beliefs on the issue of marriage,” the non-committal position he took after President Obama formally endorsed gay marriage in May. This is a pretty big deal for obvious reasons, including the fact that Mayor Reed did not initially back President Obama’s bombshell decision to publicly support same-sex marriage. Would your state official’s change of heart on this issue have an effect on your own stance? Image via Shutterstock

GTFOHWTBS: White House Ignores Texas Petition To Secede From United States

Everything is bigger in Texas…which might be why they continue to get a big ole’ ‘Ho Sit Down’ from the POTUS.. White House Ignores Texas Petition To Secede From United States Super-salty GOP officials in Texas might as well have a seat, a coke and smile while they wait for President Obama to show any signs of ‘give a fawk’ about their request to officially separate themselves from the United States (despite Texas gov. Rick Perry’s opposition) in light of his re-election. ‘Cause he has better things to do and is making that clear without even having said a word. via ABC News Texas is waiting for President Obama’s reaction to a petition demanding it be allowed to secede from the United States. They may have to keep waiting. Sunday marked the last day for Texas’ petition to secede from the union to gather 25,000 digital signatures, the number needed to warrant a response from the White House. The virtual petition achieved that goal four weeks ago. Now it’s up to 119,209, but still no word from the Oval Office. A White House official told ABC News in November that it would respond to the petition, following a procedure that demands they address any entry to the “We the People” site that rallies the requisite amount of support. On Friday, the White House said they had no prediction for when they might put out at statement. Dear Texas, good luck with getting a secession approved when your own Governor doesn’t even support the effort. SMH.

Get Well: Nelson Mandela Hospitalized In South Africa

We always have Nelson Mandela in our prayers. Via NY Daily News : Former South African president Nelson Mandela was admitted to hospital on Saturday for medical tests, although the government said there was no cause for alarm. A statement from President Jacob Zuma’s office gave no details of the condition of the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader. “Former President Mandela will receive medical attention from time to time which is consistent with his age,” the statement said. “President Zuma assures all that Madiba is doing well and there is no cause for alarm,” it added, referring to Mandela by his clan name. Mandela, who became South Africa’s first black president after the country’s first all-race elections in 1994, was admitted to hospital in February because of abdominal pain but released the following day after a keyhole examination showed there was nothing seriously wrong with him. He has since spent most of his time in his ancestral home in Qunu, a village in the impoverished Eastern Cape province. His frail health prevents him from making any public appearances in South Africa, although in the last few months he has continued to receive high-profile visitors, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton. We hope all is well with Mandela. Get home soon! AP

WATCH: At ‘Hobbit’ Premiere, Robinov Says Warner Bros. Is Taking Wait-And-See Approach To 48 FPS

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey  held its THIRD global premiere on Thursday — this time stateside at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York. I was on the red carpet, and in light of the debate over Peter Jackson’s decision to shoot the movie at a high 48 frames per second , I asked Warner Bros. Pictures President Jeff Robinov if the studio was getting behind the groundbreaking but controversial technique. Robinov told me that while Jackson’s enthusiasm was contagious, the studio will see how its limited release of the high-frame-rate cut does in theaters before making any major commitments. I also got the chance to ask Andy Serkis what he feels it will take for Hollywood to seriously consider motion capture performance as acting. Also on the red carpet were the actors who play dwarves in The Hobbit .  I couldn’t help asking if they could take on their Disney counterparts, and let’s just say they’ve been strategizing about how to take their rivals down.
