Got Kleenex? This Story Of A Convict Who Had His Sentence Commuted By Obama This Week Is A Doozy

How Obama Helped This Florida Felon From Being Condemned To Die In Jail Proud to make this one of my final actions as President. America is a nation of second chances, and 1,715 people deserved that shot. https://t.co/4hPxG7hqHL — President Obama (@POTUS44) January 19, 2017 President Obama’s last day in office was an important one for some 300 or so people, who all now have an opportunity to live outside prison walls. One of those people was Trenton Copeland, who penned a letter to REVOLT in October, detailing how he was sentenced six years ago to die in prison for a non-violent offense: I am Trenton Copeland. I am 33 years old and serving a life sentence in federal prison for a nonviolent drug offense. With no parole in the federal system, I have been fundamentally condemned to die in prison. Though it’s a memory I do not enjoy revisiting, I will never forget the day I was sentenced. I was 27 years old and to hear the judge tell me I was being committed to the custody of the Bureau of Prisons for the rest of my life was unreal. The life sentence I received for a nonviolent drug offense screamed that I was beyond redemption and unfit to breathe air as a free man ever again. Words cannot even begin to touch the feelings I had. I was only 27. Locked up for the rest of my life? I couldn’t really process it. And I still can’t, to be honest. The letter detailed how Copeland had turned his sentence into an opportunity to better himself, he accepted full responsibility for his fate, admitting his actions put him behind bars (charged with conspiring to deal cocaine, Copeland received a life sentence because he had two prior convictions for marijuana and cocaine possession). Since being sentenced he had worked to get his GED and had dreams of becoming a youth counselor, helping prevent others from suffering his same fate. He closed by saying without receiving clemency from Obama or major changes to the criminal justice system he would die behind bars. It’s no secret that Congress has been unresponsive to all of Obama’s pleas to reduce mandatory minimums for nonviolent offenders. In eight years, the former President has had to take matters into his own hands and grant commutations at his own discretion. The Washington Post has picked up where Revolt left off — detailing the turmoil Copeland and his family have experienced in the months since his open letter. A week after Copeland’s essay published, Obama commuted the sentences of nearly 100 prisoners. Copeland’s name was not on the list. Good news came to dozens more federal inmates across the United States that month, bringing Obama’s total number of commutations above 1,000 — more than the previous 11 presidents combined. Copeland didn’t make Obama’s list in October, WaPo reports. But he still had some remaining hope. On Tuesday, in one particularly dramatic, last-minute clemency action, Obama pardoned 64 people and commuted the sentences of 209 others, including Chelsea Manning, the Army private convicted of stealing secret diplomatic and military documents and giving them to WikiLeaks. The president also granted a commutation Tuesday to Oscar López Rivera, a Puerto Rican independence activist who was a member of the Armed Forces of National Liberation, a terrorist organization that killed and wounded people in the 1970s and 1980s with bomb attacks. In addition, Obama pardoned more than five dozen people, including baseball great Willie McCovey and retired Marine Gen. James E. Cartwright. Copeland was not on Tuesday’s White House list. The WaPo account of Copeland’s wait is painfully suspenseful, as the last days of Obama’s White House are coming to a close, he begins to fear for the worst. But then… On the last full day of Obama’s presidency, Annie Fray sat at her desk in a Pensacola marketing office. At five minutes to noon, her phone rang. It was Copeland’s lawyer. The president had released his last list. “I shouted so loud my head started hurting,” Fray said. Then she finished her shift and called her son, who will now be free before he turns 40, with half his life to go. Crazy right? To be able to put a face to these disastrous drug sentencing laws makes such a huge difference. Sadly, we are doubtful that the incoming administration give’s AF about all the other Trent Copelands still behind bars. Photo Courtesy Brittany Byrd

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar Under Fire for Pro-Trump Statement!

During the unbelievably nightmarish, totally traumatic election season … Sorry, let’s just take a quiet moment to ourselves to practice some breathing exercises and gather ourselves after remembering the election season. … OK, are we good now? Have we healed? Let’s move on. During the unbelievably nightmarish, totally traumatic election season, the Duggars were mostly very quiet about which candidate they were voting for . Derick Dillard did reveal that he was voting for Donald Trump , but other than that, the family kept their picks for president to themselves. Normally we’d just go ahead and assume that the Duggars would be voting for the Republican candidate, given their conservative views , but things were a little different this time around. Mostly because the Republican candidate was a gross, vulgar monster who, despite his many claims, went against everything the Duggars have always said they believed in. But if the election taught us anything, it was that you can always count on people to surprise you. And not in a good way . And so judging by this new Facebook post on the Duggar Family Official page, it looks like the family really was on Trump’s side all along. As Jim Bob and Michelle wrote in the post, “Evangelicals played a huge role in Donald Trump becoming our new President this week. We all know that we need to see our country turn back to God.” We’ll take another moment here for your head to stop spinning, and if your brain exploded, go ahead and take some time to clean that mess up. The notion that Donald Trump could turn the U.S. back to God is just so massively wrong in so very many ways, isn’t it? But still, the Duggars insist that “As a new president takes office, we need to take advantage of this opportunity to teach our kids about God’s grace on our nation.” And here’s the point of all this mess … “It’s why Mike Huckabee’s team at Learn Our History created the kids DVD, One Nation Under God, and right now they’re giving it way for free at [insert Duggar propaganda link here].” The Duggars are pushing these DVDs because “too few children know the story of God’s role in American history,” and the DVDs are free because “every child has a right to know.” Jim Bob and Michelle call these productions “positive, patriotic and faith-based lessons that your children or grandchildren will learn.” And hey, “Whether you choose to place an order or not, please be sure your kids are learning about God’s role in American history.” So there are a couple of issues with this. One, the previously mentioned hilariously misguided thought that Trump will somehow turn the U.S. into some theocracy. And two, the fact that this whole DVD operation seems to be a bit of a scam — it’s one of those “give your credit card information and get something for free, but figure out how to cancel our we’ll charge you forever” deals. And people are here for none of it. “If you are hoping Trump will bring the country to God you are going to be disappointed,” one fan wrote. “You need an actual Godly Christian witness to do that, and Trump is a blasphemy of Christ’s teaching.” “What do you mean, ‘turn back to God'” another asked. “An administration under Trump will NOT teach children to ‘turn back to God.’ He built his campaign on racism, sexism, and violence.” About those DVDs, one person wrote “It’s awesome. But their dvd has never been free. Wish they were and I’d get one for kids. Wish Christians especially wouldn’t spread falsities like that, cause people trust you.” The shade of it all! And the crushing disappointment and the all-encompassing fear. Don’t forget those. View Slideshow: 13 Stars Who Are Actually Happy Donald Trump is President

Kanye West Not Asked to Perform at Trump’s Inauguration Because He’s Black?!

Don’t look now, but Donald Trump may have another scandal on his hands. A big one. A bad one. A racist one. OK, to set the stage for this latest monstrosity, let’s remember that Kanye West has been vocal about his support for Donald Trump these past few months. In a concert shortly after the election, Kanye revealed that while he skipped out on voting this time around, if he had voted, he would have voted for Trump . Then in December, Kanye met with Trump in New York for … reasons. We really don’t want to speculate too much on what could have gone down between those two. Afterwards, they posed for photos, and Trump claimed that he and Kanye have “been friends for a long time.” Kanye later tweeted a photo of a gift that Trump had given him : a copy of the Time’s Person of the Year issue featuring Trump that he’d signed “To Kanye: you are a great friend.” Now that all that nonsense is fresh in your mind, let’s also remember that poor Donald had a hell of a time finding artists to perform for his inauguration . Eventually he managed to book 3 Doors Down and Toby Keith, along with a few other acts. There’d been some speculation that he could have gotten Kanye to perform, since they’re besties and all, and since Kanye is one of the very few notable artists willing to publicly support him. But now, the chair of the Presidential Inaugural Committee, Tom Barrack, is explaining the issue with Kanye performing for Trump. And it is going to get ugly in here. Good ol’ Tom says that while Kanye has “been great,” and while “he considers himself a friend of the President-elect,” it’s imply “not the venue” for the rapper. And that’s because “It’s going to be typically and traditionally American.” If you deduced that Kanye wasn’t asked to perform because he’s black, well, you’re not alone on your assumptions. Over on Twitter, people are ripping this statement apart. “What’s traditionally American?” one person asked. “WHITE?” “This guy isn’t even aware of how racist he sounds,” another commented. One Twitter user pointed out that “Rap/hip hop is American music. ‘Traditionally American’ is code for not ethnic/black/urban,” and another asked “Uh, you guys know which country invented hip hop?” “That’s a scary level of racism right there,” someone stated. “And you can tell he doesn’t think it’s racist.” In closing, one more Twitterer said “In other words, they don’t want ya black as there lmao!” And honestly, is there any other way to interpret that statement? Because if there is, we’re having trouble coming up with it. Dark times ahead, everyone. Look out. View Slideshow: 14 Stars Donald Trump Thinks Are YUUGELY Overrated

Everyone Is Inconsolable About Today Being The Obamas’ Last Day In Office

Barack And Michelle’s Last Day January 19th, 2017. It’s a day marked on our calendars for a while now. That’s because it’s the last day Barack Obama is our president. Trump Advisor Being Sued For Hiring People To Discriminate Against Black People [Video]

Reed Cordish, a new Trump advisor and friend to Ivanka, has 2 lawsuits in the works for hiring people to discriminate against black folks at his club. They say reed thinks “Hitting N***ers Is Good For Business.” NYDAILY : According to three lawsuits reviewed by the Daily News, employees at ECI have on Cordish’s orders routinely discriminated against black guests at a shopping and entertainment center that the company owns in Kansas City, Missouri. The so-called “Power and Light District” is a half-million square-foot mall complete with nightclubs, bars and shops. The location opened in 2007 after Cordish teamed up with Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, a fellow real estate developer who will also join the President-elect’s administration as a White The lawsuits are from Kansas City, Missouri where Cordish and another Trump advisor, Jared Kushner, are named for racial discrimination in the Power and Light District…also known as the “Power and White District.” But the “Light District” has a dark repute among Kansas City’s black community, who refer to it as the “Power and White District,” according to at least two separate suits. A suit filed in 2014 claims Dante Combs and Adam Williams, who are black, were harassed and beaten up by white men hired by ECI to “lighten up” its “District” locations as part of an effort to keep African-Americans out. ECI won a preliminary ruling in a federal district court, but Combs and Williams are pursuing an appeal in the decision. Dante Combs and Adams Williams filed class action racial discrimination lawsuits against Cordish’s company back in 2014 after the men were beaten and harassed by white employees at one of the establishments. Nonetheless, Christina Martinez, a former manager at a “District” club, claimed in court testimony that she heard Reed Cordish himself on multiple occasions use code words such as “urbans” to refer to African-Americans. Employees were encouraged to use the code to exclude black customers, she said. ECI’s vice president Jake Miller allegedly “did not want any African-Americans” at the clubs either, Martinez continued, adding that she once saw him pick up a DJ’s microphone and exclaim, “Get that f—–g n—-r music off here.” In an allegedly blatant attempt to purge its clubs of black patrons, Martinez claimed Cordish’s company would employ so-called “rabbits.” “A ‘rabbit’ was a white kid who got free drinks to go around the District, do whatever he wanted, so long as he singled out blacks and started confrontations with them,” Martinez testified. Thomas Alexitch, a self-described “rabbit,” corroborated those allegations in a sworn affidavit. Money talks! So these brothers suing may have to settle to see any kind of loot for this attack.
