Hillary Clinton became the first woman to ever accept a major party's nomination for President of the United States on Thursday night. It was a big deal. And, today, yet many people on the Internet are talking about someone they had never heard of prior to the Democratic National Convention, as opposed to this Presidential hopeful. Did you catch the speech of Khizr Khan? Khan's son, Humayun, was a captain in the U.S. Army. When a vehicle packed with explosives approached his compound in Iraq in 2004, he told his men to take cover as he ran toward it. It exploded and killed Khan on the spot, earning him a posthumous Bronze Star. Fast forward 12 years later and Khizr Khan and his wife taking the stage in Philadelphia. During a moving speech toward the end of the DNC, Khan paid tribute to his child; gave credit to Hillary Clinton; and offered a stark, brave repudiation of Donald Trump. “We are honored to stand here as the parents of Capt. Humayun Khan, and as patriotic American Muslims with undivided loyalty to our country,” Khizr Khan said to a standing ovation. He spoke of his son's dreams of becoming a military attorney and how Clinton had referred to his son as “the best of America.” And then he went after Trump. “If it was up to Donald Trump, [Humayun] never would have been in America,” Khan said. “Donald Trump consistently smears the character of Muslims. He disrespects other minorities, women, judges, even his own party leadership. He vows to build walls and ban us from this country.” He continued: “Donald Trum, you are asking Americans to trust you with our future. Let me ask you: Have you even read the U.S. Constitution? I will gladly lend you my copy.” With those words, he pulled a copy of the Constitution from his pocket. “In this document, look for the words 'liberty' and 'equal protection of law,'” he said, once again to a raucous ovation. Earlier this month, Trump promised congressional Republicans that he would defend “Article XII” of the Constitution. There is no such Article. “Have you ever been to Arlington Cemetery?” Khan said. “Go look at the graves of the brave patriots who died defending America — you will see all faiths, genders, and ethnicities. You have sacrificed nothing. And no one.” Pretty powerful stuff. Watch the full speech below:
It’s that time of year again when we eagerly anticipate some sort of broadcast disaster. The nominations for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards have been announced, and it’s pretty much all about Beyonce (and a little bit about Adele). Kanye West’s controversial “Famous” was, of course, nominated. Who knows? Maybe Fergie was right to predict that his and Kim Kardashian’s feud with Taylor Swift was one big hoax , and we should expect to see the trio take the stage that night. Together. Holding hands. Back in 2013, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend got married , and naturally, some of Hollywood’s biggest names turned out to celebrate the union of two A-listers. Unfortunately, one of the most famous invitees (who happens to also be one of Teigen’s BFF’s) was unable to attend – but that doesn’t mean she missed out on a minute of the action! Allow us to explain: The Teigen-Legend nuptials took place just three months after Kim Kardashian gave birth to daughter North West. As we know, Kim likes to lay low until the baby weight is gone , so she wasn’t about to attend a star-studded and pap-friendly social event so soon after welcoming her first daughter. But good luck keeping Kanye away from that sort of thing. Yeezy attended on his own, which is only slightly weird. The really weird part is that he texted Kim non-stop throughout the ceremony and reception to let her know what she was missing out on: “I got in a fight with Kanye during your wedding,” Kim told Chrissy to promote … whatever crap one of them is promoting these days. “I didn’t go … [North] was just born and I was so fat, and I had nothing to wear, so then he kept texting me, ‘Babe, this is the most beautiful wedding,’ ‘Babe, this is so pretty. I really wish you were here at Lake Como.’” “Literally a play-by-play text. We got into the biggest fight. ‘Just stop texting me. Go enjoy the wedding, you’re making me feel so bad!’” It would be one thing if Kanye was checking in on his wife and three-month old daughter, but no – homey was giving detailed reviews of the bacon-wrapped scallops. So yeah, Kanye sounds really annoying. Fortunately, he’s spent his whole career bracing us for this reveal by being obnoxious every chance he gets. Maybe it won’t be as hard for Kim and Taylor Swift to find some common ground as we thought! View Slideshow: Kim Kardashian Hosts Posh Baby Shower for Chrissy Teigen: PHOTOS
Kendall Jenner is putting her fame to good use in the following video. For a major change, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians isn't using her platform to push for some random product or to simply pose online without many layers of clothing on. In footage filmed on behalf of RTV and the Independent Journal Review, Kendall is wearing fashion from different decades below, including the 1970s (flower child), 1990s (grunge gal) and 2000s (modern businesswoman). And she's sending along a crucial message while doing so. “The 26th Amendment grants 18-year-old's the right to vote,” the video says. “Young voter turnout rises as candidates appear in new media like MTV. Over 20 million young voters decided the outcome for both elections [2008 and 2012]. “What happens next is up to you.” The segment is bipartisan. Kendall is not pushing her views on anyone, nor is she telling anyone to vote for Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump. She is simply saying to go out and to vote. Period. “Everyday we vote, we're able to express our opinions online with 'Likes' and hashtags,” Kendall tells Rock the Vote. “But it hasn't always been that easy, especially for women.” Adds Alex Skatell, Founder and CEO of Independent Journal Review, via statement: “We're seeing unprecedented involvement and engagement from millennial voters in recent elections, and it's no surprise candidates are reaching out to young voters through their preferred platforms – social media sites and online. “As a social-first, mobile-first website, it's the perfect partnership for IJR.com to work with Kendall Jenner and Rock the Vote to engage young voters and give them a louder voice. “Kendall has a larger social media reach than each of the presidential candidates, and using her voice to encourage millennial voters is a great thing.” Check out the video now:
Some Black Family Preciousness: Melissa Harris Perry And Family At The View We’re finally getting a good look at that baby girl we have heard so much about since Melissa Harris-Perry made the announcement about her arrival in 2014. The beautiful and intelligent scholar and television host made an appearance on the show Monday to discuss her departure from MSNBC following an email she sent revealing how she’d been mistreated by network execs. Harris-Perry told the hosts: ‘Did I think it was racialized? Not in the sense of like they’re coming after Melissa for being black. ‘Do I think it has racial implications? 100 percent. Our show had the most diverse guests on cable news, period. Taking this show off the air, even if you put me individually back on as a host, meant that the folks who sat at our table, whether they were transgender, women of color, Latino Republicans, they just weren’t going to be there anymore – because we were the folks who put them on air each and every week.’ She also went into further detail about why she sent the email, saying the network basically put her on pause because she didn’t want to focus solely on the presidential election: ‘The easiest way to describe this is if you think about a relationship. Have you ever been dating somebody and presumably you guys are still dating but not really – like he hasn’t called? ‘Y’all haven’t not been out in months. And all the places where you used to go together, actually he’s out there with somebody else and you’re like, I am pretty sure we are not dating anymore. ‘That’s kind of what happened with the show.’ Wow that’s deep!
