Teen Unemployment: CNBC Reporter Gets Close With ‘Worst in 41 Years’ Tag

In an article published yesterday afternoon, CNBC news associate Joseph Pisani took note of something the rest of the media mostly hasn’t, or at least hasn’t highlighted: the terrible job market for teenagers. The headline and text indicate that this is the worst such market in 41 years. That’s true, based on the stat Pisani presented. But barring a near miracle in the next three months, in terms of the stat that matters most, the unemployment rate, it’s the worst ever. Give the CNBC reporter props for doing something almost no other journalist has done, which is to use the not seasonally adjusted (NSA) employment numbers as his factual source. As I have discussed several times, including here , the reported NSA numbers represent the government’s best estimate of what really happened in a given month, while the seasonally adjusted (SA) numbers published (and appropriately labeled) by the government and reported (but usually not labeled) by the press represent the result after smoothing out seasonal fluctuations. Pisani’s prose proceeds as follows: Teens Face Worst Summer Job Market in 41 Years The kickoff to the summer job season is not looking so hot for teens. Employment among 16-to 19-year olds in May grew by just 6,000, the smallest increase since 1969, when teen jobs fell by 14,000, according to government data analyzed by employment firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. In May 2008 and 2009, teen employment grew by over 110,000. “It’s certainly a preliminary strong indication that it’s going to be a tough job market for teens,” said John Challenger, CEO of Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Jobs traditionally given to teens are apparently going to older workers who are willing to take low paying job to make ends meet. Employment among 20- to 24-year-olds grew by 270,000 in May, an unusual spike, considering that employment in the same age group fell by 261,000 in May 2009. “Also impacting the job market for young adults are the large number of older adults who are willing to accept even a temporary, seasonal position simply to generate some income,” said Steven Rothberg, chief executive officer of CollegeRecruiter.com, an online entry-level job-posting site. “We’re seeing experienced candidates taking jobs normally reserved for college grads and college grads taking jobs normally reserved for college students,” said Rothberg. As noted above, the -6,000 stat and the other monthly figures Pisani cited are from published NSA data (and ultimately from the government’s Bureau of Labor Statistics and not Challenger, Gray & Christmas, but I’m quibbling). That is the correct measurement framework to use. Look at the seasonally adjusted teenage unemployment rate in this graphic , however (using SA numbers is appropriate because the review is over a full-year period), one finds that the average teen unemployment rate in the past 12 months has been 25.95%. The linked graphic goes back to 1948, the earliest available year at the BLS for teen unemployment stats. No other 12-month period going back over 60 years has an average teen unemployment rate of more than 24%. Perhaps it’s too ambitious an endeavor for his assignment, but the CNBC journalist did not consider the possible impact of the crowding out of teens and other less-skilled workers by illegal immigrants. Another blind spot is his failure to deal with the effects of the artificially high federal minimum wage, as well minimum wages in several states that are even higher than Uncle Sam’s rate. But at least Pisani noticed the unprecedentedly awful situation, the kind of thing that I daresay would be causing a much bigger stir if a Republican or conservative were currently occupying the White House. A search at the Associated Press’s main site on “teen unemployment” (not in quotes) came back with one relevant result, a short item by the wire service’s Martin Crutsinger that is primarily a just-the-facts listing of key figures from the BLS’s Friday report. A Google News search on “teen unemployment (using quote) sorted by date returns only 53 items, and very few of them are from national outlets. Some of them tout government-sponsored teen “jobs programs” — sad indeed, given that government policy is primarily what has created the current situation. Cross-posted at .

Lindsay Lohan Ankle Bracelet: Spotted in Malibu!

Lindsay Lohan has gone to great lengths to deny the press its coveted money shot – the troubled actress donning the court-mandated SCRAM ankle bracelet. The rest of her body, though? No such qualms. Over the weekend, Lohan was seen doing a beachy cavewoman photo shoot in Malibu wearing nothing but lingerie and boots and clutching a bow and arrow. That’s just plain silly. Maybe they’ll airbrush it: HEAR HER ROAR : But keep that anklet covered up! At least at some events, like the weekend’s MTV Movie Awards, full-length dresses and pantsuits work. This is effectively a lingerie shoot, however. Absurd. Fortunately, despite LiLo’s best efforts, the alcohol-monitoring bracelet made a cameo after all. Sure, you can’t see her face AND the thing together, but hey. Ken Jeong Brings Laughter And Tears To The MTV Movie Awards

‘The Hangover’ star delivers a touching acceptance speech for Best WTF Moment. By Josh Wigler Ken Jeong poses with his award for Best WTF Moment in the press room at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Getty Images At the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, the evening’s most horrifying and most touching moments were provided by the same person: Ken Jeong, the comedian whose star is on the rise thanks to his portrayal of Korean crime boss Mr. Chow in “The Hangover.” Jeong’s first memorable moment came when he and fellow “Hangover” star Ed Helms appeared onstage together to perform “Stu’s Song,” the piano tune played famously by Helms’ character in the 2009 comedy. While Helms handled the music, Jeong paraded around the stage wearing a skintight and all-too-revealing leopard-print leotard. Although the performance yielded several laughs from the audience, it also drew the fictionalized ire of Les Grossman, the “Tropic Thunder” movie executive. Eventually, an enraged Grossman — the alleged producer of the show — hijacked the performance with a dance number opposite Jennifer Lopez, driving Jeong and Helms off the stage. But that wasn’t the end of Jeong’s evening, as the actor later won the Best WTF Moment award for his famous “Hangover” scene where he emerges from the trunk of a car wearing absolutely nothing. “Me and my penis would love to thank MTV and the voters,” the elated Jeong joked. “This is quite an honor.” Jeong went on to thank numerous parties, including his parents and “The Hangover” director Todd Phillips, before turning to a more personal topic: his wife Tran’s recent battle with breast cancer. “Todd and Bradley Cooper, a good friend of mine, actually helped me through a really difficult time when my wife was going through breast cancer treatment,” a tearful Jeong told the audience. “The reason why I [appeared in ‘The Hangover’] is that she taught me that life is short, so don’t be afraid to take chances.” The crowd erupted with applause at the news that Jeong’s wife has been cancer-free for two years. Not willing to leave the stage on such a somber note, Jeong slipped into his “Hangover” persona’s shoes and flipped off the audience with the character’s signature flamboyance: “Thank you, motherf—ers!” Relive the wildest, funniest and most-jaw-dropping moments of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, watch revealing red-carpet interviews and get exclusive movie clips after the show at MovieAwards.MTV.com. Movie Review – ‘Get Him To The Greek’

Get Him To The Greek Starring Jonah Hill, Russell Brand, and Sean Combs Directed by Nicholas Stoller Rated R A better exploration of the excess and dysfunction of rock n’ roll and the music industry than it is an outright comedy, Get Him to the Greek is surprisingly dark, often manic, definitely inspired, and occasionally fantastic. Occasionally. Some of that has to do with the Apatow school of filmmaking, which has a penchant for taking the laughs where they come, but never in place of the actual story. So if this isn’t as funny as the trailers make you believe, that’s because this movie is not completely about getting a rock star on stage at the Greek Theater. The rock star is Aldous Snow ( Russell Brand ). Aldous was a character in Forgetting Sarah Marshall a couple years ago for the same director, Nicholas Stoller . Brand may or may not be extremely limited as an actor, but he sure as hell knocks this one dead. It’s one of the signature rock star performances; there’s not a moment when he is not the tempermental, hard living lead singer of Infant Sorrow. Ten years ago, the band played the Greek, and the resulting album was one of the all-time best-selling live records ever made. In an effort to boost not just his employer, Pinnacle Records, but the slumping music industry in general, record company lackey Aaron Green ( Jonah Hill ) pitches an anniversary show to his boss ( Sean “Diddy” Combs ). Having suffered a public break-up with his girlfriend Jackie Q ( Rose Byrne ) and an equally public flop called African Child – which the press chides as being the worst thing to happen to black culture since the Rodney King beating – Aldous agrees to do the show. Aaron is flown to England to retrieve the singer, guide him to The Today Show , and arrive in Los Angeles a couple days later for the show. Simple enough? Snow is a force of nature, so it’s never as easy as getting on and off planes. There’s drinking, women, drug muling, more drinking, and more drinking. After seven years on the wagon, Aldous crawled back into the bottle after the split from his girlfriend, and based on his constitution, it must have been a doozy of a break-up.

Kristen Stewart Apologizes For ‘Rape’ Comment

‘People thinking I’m insensitive about this subject rips my guts out,’ ‘Twilight’ actress says. By Gil Kaufman Kristen Stewart Photo: Larry Bussacca/ Getty Images “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart has long had a difficult relationship with the press, but on Thursday the star admitted that it was her own fault that a quote in an upcoming issue of British Elle kicked up a firestorm of controversy. In the cover story interview of the magazine’s July issue, Stewart compared the rigors of her worldwide fame to a woman being sexually assaulted, saying, “What you don’t see are the cameras shoved in my face and the bizarre intrusive questions being asked, or the people falling over themselves, screaming and taunting to get a reaction,” she said of the constant paparazzi crush. “The photos are so … I feel like I’m looking at someone being raped. A lot of the time I can’t handle it. It’s f—ed. I never expected that this would be my life.” Rape crisis groups and a raft of bloggers, fans and commenters immediately jumped on the quote and lashed Stewart for seemingly making light of sexual assault. The actress told People magazine that she had chosen her words poorly. “I really made an enormous mistake — clearly and obviously,” Stewart, 20, told the magazine during a Korean stop on the promo tour for “Eclipse.” “And I’m really sorry about my choice of words. … I’ve made stupid remarks before, and I’ve always reasoned: ‘Whatever. They can think what they want.’ ” This time, though, the “Runaways” star said she felt compelled to react to the growing backlash. ” ‘Violated’ definitely would have been a better way of expressing the thought,” she said. People noted that since playing a rape victim in the 2004 movie “Speak,” Stewart has been an advocate on behalf of women who’ve been sexually assaulted, doing public service announcements for the advocacy groups Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) and . RAINN spokesperson Katherine Hull told Fox News that she thought Stewart’s comments were inappropriate. “Kristen Stewart’s comments are regrettable,” she said. “Portraying a rape survivor in the film ‘Speak’ should have led her to use a more appropriate metaphor to describe the intrusive nature of the paparazzi. … Rape is more than an intrusion, it’s a violent crime that causes serious long-term mental-health effects for victims.” Stewart told People that she appreciated the irony of the situation she put herself in and realized her error. “People thinking that I’m insensitive about this subject rips my guts out,” she said. “I made a big mistake.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

Drake, The Game Say Album Leaks Can Be A Good Thing

Chamillionaire, Paul Wall also agree that artists can’t blame poor sales on early bootlegs. By Shaheem Reid Chamillionaire and Paul Wall Photo: MTV News Drake has been anointed by many fans and journalists alike as hip-hop’s new golden master of ceremonies, but he is not exempt from the same problem plaguing most musicians these days. Bootleggers leaked his much-anticipated Thank Me Later LP earlier this week, but the Toronto MC took it stride, tweeting, “I gave away free music for years so we’re good over here.” Drake told TheLifeFiles.com that the word of mouth won’t hurt him. “It’s a honor to make this dream come true for Wayne, and I’m excited to start my journey,” he said of the new album, which he previewed for the press on Wednesday. “I always say, if I would have put out an album that was poor quality, I think the leaks would have hurt me. Because a lot of the feedback has been great, it can only help.” The Game spoke about the inevitability of leaking when he stopped by the MTV Newsroom on Wednesday. “Every album is getting leaked from now until the duration of hip-hop,” he said. “It’s just once it hits the plant, or once a radio station gets their promo, somebody is gonna leak the album. You can look forward to it being leaked a week early or whatever. It’s gonna get leaked.” Chamillionaire and Paul Wall weighed in as well. And though they agreed that an MC’s ire is definitely raised when his album leaks early, for the most part, it doesn’t hurt too much. “You can’t not be bothered by that,” Cham told MTV News. “Because you wonder, is that a sale that I could have made? You hate to see all your hard work that you went to the studio doing. We done seen bootleggers riding 28s. We like, ‘Man, they eating good off of us.’ But we understand; you just gotta give them that music. If it’s dope, they gonna come buy it. I don’t think Drake or anybody else should worry if it’s dope. If people want it, it’s gonna create enough hype. 50 Cent, even Lil Wayne, everybody suffered from leaks and some people benefited from it.” Wall agreed that leaks can do as much good as they do harm. “If the album don’t sell good — that’s just not Drake, this is every artist — then [they say], ‘Oh, it got bootlegged.’ If it does great, then they’ll be like, ‘Oh, it does great ’cause the bootleg got out, and it let everybody know this was legit.’ It goes both ways.” Game suggested that any artists who complain that leaks hurt their sales should stop making excuses and make better music. “Lil Wayne showed me that,” Game said. “His album leaked four weeks before Tha Carter III was supposed to come out, and he sold a million the first week. That’s just an excuse. … It’s no longer acceptable because people are still selling.” Do you think leaks can help as much as they hurt? Talk about it in the comments.
