Matthew Fox On Tyler Perry And Becoming ‘Alex Cross”s Maniacal Picasso

After spending six years playing hero on ABC’s LOST , Matthew Fox crossed over to the dark side for role in the James Patterson adaptation Alex Cross , in which he plays a master assassin named Picasso whose perverse precision and meticulous skill make him a deadly foil to Detroit cop/psychological profiler ( Tyler Perry ). [ Read Movieline’s review of Alex Cross ] In addition to training for months to develop the sinewy, lethal physique of his ruthless character (who sports the actor’s own semi-recent array of body tattoos, which make quite an impression in the film’s opening MMA fight scene), Fox underwent an unusually severe emotional preparation for the isolating role, partly by design and partly due to overlapping schedules with World War Z which required him to fly back and forth for a period of time filming two movies at once. As a result, Fox and co-star Tyler Perry barely interacted with one another on the Alex Cross set, save for when they came face to face for the film’s fight scenes. (Director Rob Cohen would deliver Fox’s and Perry’s lines to the other during the majority of their characters’ telephone conversations.) Subsequently, Fox told Movieline, he only felt like he really got to know Perry the day they reunited with Cohen and their cast mates in Los Angeles to speak with press: “I felt like I was really looking at Tyler with my eyes, and he was looking at me with his eyes, and we were friends who’d been through this kind of crazy experience together.” Fox spoke further with Movieline about the emotionally taxing job of playing Picasso, one of the darkest and most unhinged villains of the year, how much of the cold-blooded killer’s severe nature lives inside of him (and how he shook him off), and what compelled him to stay so busy following the end of the long-running LOST . You filmed World War Z and Alex Cross at the same time, then started Peter Webber’s Emperor just three months later. Why pack it in so much? When you find the things you want to be a part of, you want to be a part of them. You get to the point, for me anyway, where once you click over to a certain point you’re like, I have to do this, and I felt that way about both World War Z and Alex Cross . I was bummed that there was so much overlap just because of how crazy it was going to be to travel. But it didn’t end up being too bad, it was doable. Picasso is such a clearly strenuous character to play. There’s so much energy coming out of you off the screen in every scene. That must have taken such effort to even prepare mentally for, but how exhaustive was it to add the travel back and forth and switching out of Alex Cross into your World War Z character? It was, and I had moments where I was a little like, oh my god. But I don’t know – I kind of enjoy that kind of intense load. I think I get excited by it and inspired by it. I’m not going to lie to you, I was very excited when I was done with both of those projects and got to go home and be with my family again and not get on an airplane again for a while. But both of the experiences were amazing. The World War Z experience with Marc Forster and the whole crew over there, that whole cast, and the kids in that movie, and Brad [Pitt] and Mireille [Enos], everybody – it was just great. And then the Alex Cross experience, my experience with Rob [Cohen], was one of the best I’ve ever had. Our collaboration on this guy and how much I felt like he was in it with me – how much he had my back in the whole thing. It was a very lonely role to play. It seems fairly emotionally isolating, to live in the mind of this guy. Yeah, it was. I mean, the character of Picasso creates that for himself. He’s the most supremely arrogant person and holds himself above everyone, so he creates that emotional isolation. So to walk in that and try to figure that out… but I always felt like Rob was right there with me. Rob explained that while filming, you and Tyler actually didn’t interact very much on set, including the telephone conversations your characters share, mostly due to scheduling. At what point do you feel you actually got to know Tyler? Right downstairs after the press conference when we hugged each other and we both were a year away from the characters we were playing, and the circumstances, and those two guys and how they were trying to kill each other. That was the very first time I felt like we’ve both hung out in a moment when were getting to know each other. I felt like I was really looking at Tyler with my eyes, and he was looking at me with his eyes, and we were friends who’d been through this kind of crazy experience together. That seems quite unusual, no? I’ve never been part of a story where my entire interaction with another actor was onscreen, moments where we’re trying to kill each other. I’ve never had that experience. It kind of makes sense to me that it turned out that way, but if I ever went and did another film where it was a villain vs. hero, I would wonder if there was a way to do it and still have moments in between when we just hang out and talk about our families. But I kind of think on some level sometimes it’s necessary to do it like we did it. Many folks have drawn the conclusion that you following your years playing Jack Shephard on LOST with a villainous role like Picasso might have been out of a desire for extreme change, but is that how you feel about that decision now? I’ll put it to you this way: I never, ever think about the things that I get involved with on a macro means-to-an-ends scale. Never. So am I happy that it worked out that way? Yeah, I think it’s pretty cool. But it was purely motivated by an inside-out thing. I love Rob, I met Rob, and I felt like we “got” each other. Him offering me this opportunity that I knew was going to require an enormous amount and be really challenging and require me to figure out so many things – I’m scared shitless, I’m not sure I can pull it off – that’s a good reason to want to do this. Now looking at it objectively I can see that coming off of a six-year television show, and I haven’t been in anything since then, and this being the first film coming out after that, it’s cool that it’s such a change. When you look at the characters you’ve played throughout your career, do you see yourself in every one of them – and if so, what does that say about Picasso? Is there a hidden darkness inside of you that this enabled you to tap into? [Laughs] I think that there’s a hidden darkness in all of us! I’m a big fan of the book The Heart of Darkness , and the notion that we are much more in the areas of gray than we are either a good person or a bad person. We all have the capacity for potentially very dark things, and we all have the capacity for incredible hope and compassion and goodness to each other. I think that’s the more challenging way to look at us as a species, because it requires you to actually make those choices. So yes – to answer your question directly, I think there’s a lot of me in everything I play. I hope. That’s important; I think all actors, to a certain degree, bring parts of themselves to every role that they’re playing, and my own taste is when they bring a lot, and they’re not hiding behind the thing that they’re playing but actually are revealing the thing that they’re playing. So, yes – are there parts of me that are Picasso? Am I capable of doing those things? I mean, no. I’m not that person. I am a parent of two children that I love more than anything in the universe along with my partner in crime, my wife, and I’m really a very gentle and warm person. But I do believe that we all have a capacity for those things, and that’s what you have to do as an actor – find those things and exaggerate them and use them to try to create this illusion. While you were living in the skin of Picasso, during the shoot, would you find you took him home with you at night? Are you an easy person to live with during times like these? I would say I’m not a tremendously easy person to live with. I think I’m very aware of that, though, so I do my very best. I’m just one of those people, that – and I’ve worked with people in both camps, people who can emotionally just shine in front of a camera and the minute they say “Cut” they’re like, “Let’s grab a Coke!” And then there are people that I’ve worked with who, to bring that emotional intensity to the screen it bleeds over for a while. I’m definitely of the latter camp, but I’m also very aware of that. And so is [wife] Margherita. So it’s just one of those things; it takes me a little while for the emotional stuff to bleed out, and then I’m good. If you’re conscious of it and are aware of it, I think it’s fine. Is Bond Bi? Daniel Craig And Javier Bardem Weigh In Separately On Their Flirtatious Scene Together

Bond isn’t bi. At least that’s what I took away from Daniel Craig and Javier Bardem’s separate but equally vague responses to the erotically charged scene they share in Skyfall .   On Monday, the actors took part in separate press conferences to promote the latest installment of the Bond franchise  and, in both cases, questions about sexuality arose.  In a piece I posted earlier this morning offering  my early reaction to the picture , I noted that in the scene where  Bond  and the villain Silva meet, the latter caresses the bound MI6 agent’s chest.  In response to Silva’s attentions, 007 replies, “What makes you think this is my first time?” Since there’s been speculation on the web for a years now now about whether Bond will ever pump more than hot lead into another man,  I asked Craig at the press conference if his character was bluffing when he used this line with Bardem’s Silva. “What are you going to do?”  Craig replied breezily, getting a nice laugh from the crowd, but then he added: “I don’t see the world in sexual divisions.”  He then  changed the subject from Bond to to Bardem’s wonderfully flamboyant character, Silva. “Someone suggested that Silva may be gay,” Craig said with a big smile. “And I’m like, I think he’ll f*** anything.” As Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson sat silently onstage with Craig, the actor,  natty in a form-hugging suit and skinny tie, then downplayed the scene as  “a great flirt. It’s a game of cards,” adding: “It the right thing to say, and that way that Javier plays it is so great. He plays it for real, and he plays it to the limit. He never forgets that he’s playing a Bond villain.” Finally, Craig offered his final assessment: “I love that scene,” he said  “It makes me laugh. I hope it makes you laugh.” Earlier in the day, Bardem dropped some hints about his character that may shed a little more light on the scene.  Asked how Silva’s “sexuality informed [Bardem’s] interpretation of the character, the actor responded; “It  was part of the game, but it’s not entirely the game.”  Bardem explained that his “main goal” as Silva was creating “uncomfortable situations” for anyone who crossed his path. “Within that, you can read anything that you want or wish,” Bardem said. “But  it was more about putting the other person in a very uncomfortable situation where even James Bond doesn’t know how to get out of it.” In other words, that scene between Bond and Silva isn’t about sex. It’s about power.  Right? Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Colin Firth And Helen Mirren To Reprise British Monarch Roles In Separate Gigs

Colin Firth won an Oscar playing Britain’s King George VI in the 2010 historical drama The King’s Speech . And Dame Helen Mirren won her Academy Award playing the current U.K. monarch Queen Elizabeth II back in 2006 for her role in The Queen . Now both are set to wear their crowns again in two separate projects. Firth played Elizabeth II’s father, George VI in the Tom Hooper-directed feature about the WWII-era king who ascended the throne after his more dashing older brother abdicated in order to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson in a scandal that rocked the British Empire even as the clouds of war gathered in Europe. Also starring Helena Bonham Carter as his wife, Elizabeth, the film focused on the shy George VI, known to relatives and close friends as Bertie, who overcame a severe speech impediment to help lead his country to face the Nazi threat. The Press Association U.K. said that the new film is in the “very early stages,” but Bonham Carter and fellow King’s Speech co-star Geoffrey Rush are also likely to return. In this follow-up, Firth will return as George VI during the dark days of the Blitz, in which Buckingham Palace along with much of London during frequent night raids. Along with a Best Actor win for Firth, The King’s Speech won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Mirren, meanwhile, will take on the role of George VI’s heir, Queen Elizabeth II in a new stage play written by The Queen author Peter Morgan, according to The Guardian. Stephen Daldry will direct The Audience , which will explore her confidential meetings with her long line of British Prime Ministers from her first as a young Queen, Winston Churchill, to the current office holder, David Cameron. In The Queen , she meets with ’90s-era P.M. Tony Blair (played by Michael Sheen) around the time of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales capturing a period of great tumult for the British royal family. Appearing on Saturday Night Live shortly after her first stint playing Elizabeth II, Mirren famously said, “I’d like to say something for the record, although I played the Queen I am nothing like her. I may have been appointed Dame of the British Empire, but I am not all scones and teacups, I’m more biscuits and D-cups.” [ Sources: The Press Association , The Guardian ]

DrunkenStepfather Does the Poor Man’s Comicon of the Day

Equipped with an iPhone with 20% battery life, Drunkenstepfather.com, meaning me, went to Montreal’s version of Comicon, even though they didn’t give us Press passes, meaning we paid the 35 dollars to see this shit, despite hating virgin loser nerds who like video games and comic books and scifi and cosplay and fantasy and second life… as much as I hate the stale semen smell that follows them everywhere they go…..from chronic masturbating in their mom’s basement where they live and make robotic women while pretending to be married to their favorite women…. Well it turns out that they convention itself was as bootleg and ghetto and second rate poor man hustle as my reporting…but I figured I’d post my pics anyway…. From Captain Picard and Kirk sitting next to each other in some nerd time warp vortex, to some fat chick showing off the only head she’s ever got, to the Ghostbusters comparing dick sizes, and some girls in cosplay costume seeking male attention…..it was good times. Seth MacFarlane CRUSHES Ryan Lochte on SNL

Seth MacFarlane impersonated Ryan Lochte on Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” segment two nights ago, giving Seth Myers a preview of fall TV shows. The Family Guy and Ted movie creator just eviscerated the Olympic champion, portraying Lochte as a dumb jock with lines such as “I was America in Olympics.” “Ryan” referred to Matthew Perry’s new show Go On as “Goon” (he didn’t realize it was two words) and kept calling Animal Practice “Monkey Hospital.” #JEAH! The kicker? At one point he randomly says, “It feels so weird to be dry.” Watch Seth’s brutal parody of the Olympic swimming champ here: Seth MacFarlane as Ryan Lochte

James Terrano: Dating Amanda Knox!

Amanda Knox is going strong with her boyfriend, James Terrano. As her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito ‘s book detailing their romance and jail time hits stores, Amanda and James have been spotted in their native Seattle, going for walks, working on dance moves and having drinks together. Here’s a photo of the couple … In Sollecito’s novel Honor Bound: My Journey to Hell and Back with Amanda Knox , he says he felt “indescribable joy,” as they were acquitted of killing Meredith Kercher. Amanda was sobbing, and he said the former lovebirds had a “private moment in the basement of the courthouse, waiting to be taken back to prison one last time.” Raffaele said that his then-girlfriend, who had been dubbed “Foxy Knoxy” by the press, ” squeezed his hand and said she couldn’t wait to see her home and friends.” They didn’t get back together, however. Knox has been with Terrano for the better part of this year, having been released from an Italian jail in mid-2011. [Photo: Fame/Flynet]

President Obama Responds to Clint Eastwood RNC Speech: This Seat’s Taken!

Clint Eastwood’s Invisible Obama routine was the talk of the 2012 Republican National Convention, and it caught the attention of the Commander-in-Chief himself. Before Mitt Romney’s RNC speech last night, the actor, director and ardent GOPer made a rambling speech that featured him talking to “Obama” in an empty chair. The President’s response? A picture – sent from @BarackObama, run by his campaign – of him sitting in a chair marked The President. The caption: “This seat’s taken.” Eastwood’s unorthodox speech instantly spawned memes galore, not to mention an @InvisibleObama Twitter account, which already has more than 47,000 followers. No word if Clint and/or Mitt have friended the invisible POTUS on there, but his bit – for better or worse – was unquestionably a highlight of the RNC. “So I’ve got Mr. Obama sitting here … Mr. President, how do you handle promises you’ve made?” the 82-year-old Oscar winner asked the chair at one point. You can see for yourself below … but spoiler alert, it gave no response.

Ashley Greene Might Replace Kristen Stewart for Breaking Dawn Press Tour

Full speed… behind? Following a statement from Summit Entertainment in which the studio said it was moving ” full speed ahead ” with its original outline for the upcoming Breaking Dawn press tour – despite a certain publicized breakup – plans appear to have changed. Ashley Greene may be stepping in for Kristen Stewart. “The studio’s holding out to see if [ Robert Pattinson and Stewart] get back together,” an insider tells The New York Post . “But I don’t think anyone is banking on that happening… At this point, the press strategy would have been mapped out. It’s usually very organized, but at this time it’s undecided.” With various premieres set to take place around the country and the world, executives could simply split Stewart and Pattinson up. Greene would then appear alongside the actor for interviews and junkets. She couldn’t be a bigger fan of Rob, telling The Daily Mail a couple years ago that the star “has been one of my biggest inspirations. As a person, he’s not like anyone I’ve ever met in Hollywood, and as an actor he’s a complete natural. He has no ego.” Sorry, Kristen, but that really does appear to be true. Alexis Bellino Hair Affair: What’s Her Best Look?

Alexis Bellino shared “big news” via Twitter Monday. She cut her hair! OMFG! The Real Housewives of Orange County star removed her extensions and cut her hair short. “I wanted to do this cut for over a year!” the 35-year-old wrote. “After last season nothing scares me! Thoughts?” Vote on her best look below: Of course, it wouldn’t be The Real Housewives of Orange County – and Alexis specifically – without drama. Gretchen Rossi had a few “thoughts” on the change. Rossi, 33, cut her hair short last month and claims Bellino copied her. “Funny when people copy a lot of things you do!” she tweeted. “Weird or compliment?” “I was trying to be different and have a different look than long hair, but I guess that went out the door! LOL! Funny! I didn’t call the press! I just did it!” BURN.

Exclusive–The Ugly Side Of Usher And The Media Conspiracy Surrounding His Court Hearings

Lies, Payin’ People Off, And Leaks to the Press. All this bull and there’s a whole lot more no one is talkin’ about. A source revealed to BOSSIP that the media’s depiction of Tameka, and stories surrounding her, are misconstrued and too often leaked by Usher himself! We got the truth on the Saks “card”, Nannies, and the singer’s volatile relationship with his Mom. Let’s get the facts straight: • Usher filed for Sole legal and Sole Physical Custody January 4th, 2011, after he went back on his “word” and didn’t let the kids go on vacation with Tameka. Instead, he kept the boys in Miami, Florida with him. We’re told it was “preemptive” because he thought Tameka was going to file first…smh • Usher has been responsible for all of the Nanny payments since the divorce (per agreement), and uses them as spies. We hear he doesn’t even pay them on time or at all sometimes. So all that leaves Tameka with are pissed off Nannies who have attitudes with her, but not him. Nice control tactic Big Ush. He even got two of them to testify against Tameka and rifle through her isht; one even removed things from her house as evidence for him…i.e., pictures, deleted emails, etc. • The real reason why Usher’s Mom ain’t managing him has nothing to do with Tameka. Our source revealed that Usher’s Mommy is “controlling, bossy, and would disrespect him as if her were nine years old”. On October 18, 2009, the singer rammed his Mom’s truck with his three times…HEAD ON. His Mom was in the car during the incident. Apparently, he was so angry, cursing her out, and wanted to hurt her. Tameka’s sister actually testified about the dysfunctional relationship with his mother, whom he calls “Jonnetta”, but we guess the media doesn’t write about that since it’s not leaked. •The crazy “family friend”, Linda Brock-White, is actually a friend of Tameka’s first ex-husband Ryan. She was fired from Lockheed Martin after 20 years of employment and traveled with Tameka and the boys; often as a friend or a “play aunt”. We’re told it’s suspected that she was paid off by Usher and his legal team because prior to him filing, she didn’t like Usher one bit. Apparently she also thought he was crazy to file this action and she “despised him”. Her testifying against Tameka just shows his control and how people can be bought! She and Maya Fox Davis were both friends of Tameka’s who Usher ended up manipulating. We hear he screwed Maya too; wonder if he chopped it down with Linda? • That whole Saks card issue was one of many reasons Usher was held in “Contempt” in this case. Per their divorce agreement, Usher was to leave the Saks card open because it has special VIP benefits; he agreed to do so. Tameka makes her own payments so get it straight. The other strikes against him that led to the Contempt smack down were that: He didn’t pay the nannies per their divorce agreement. He fails to give Tameka information on her sons whereabouts. We’re told they’re usually with Grace and Ush tries to hide that fact since the exes have a NO “Overnight Guests”, unless married or family, clause in their Divorce agreement. He has also lied about Grace sleeping in the same room and bed with them. Way to use the Saks card as a way to make Tameka look materialistic Ush. The focus should have been on the fact that he’d already agreed and signed his name to all of this and more in the divorce settlement, only to renege on the Judges Final Order. None of us know what the Judges ruling will be but we see how foul and underhanded Usher has been throughout this whole ordeal. His attempt to take Custody away from Tameka without a clear basis is heartless and ridiculous. We know how smart their boys are. Let’s make sure they stay happy and healthy with all of this going on and can stay with their Mom. Tameka just wants what’s best for her sons and a life on a “tour bus” or in 100 hotels at this age isn’t what they need. Bottom line. This entire case is frivolous and has gotten out of hand. All we can see now is Usher’s peanut head; tryin’ to make Tameka look bad. Stop pittin’ the media and your fans Ush. SMH Photos via Getty Images
