Channing Tatum, Serious Actor: The Outlook For America’s Most Ambitious Beefcake

He may look like an impossibly chiseled slab of flesh – and, well, he is – but this past weekend Channing Tatum proved to America (and that foreign country called Hollywood) that he is capable of much more. With Magic Mike wildly overperforming at the box office to the tune of $39 million, it’s time to acknowledge that this one-time piece of eye-meat has opened the door to a new chapter in his career. It’s widely known that it was Tatum who approached auteur Steven Soderbergh with the idea for Magic Mike , as the film was inspired by Tatum’s own experiences as a male stripper when he was 18. For as long as he’s been entertaining audiences, Tatum has been seen primarily as nothing more than an object, but his aspirations are clearly to have a career that involves some brains, too. Below, we take a look at where one of the most buzzworthy actors in the world is headed, by way of his upcoming films. The Bitter Pill Tatum will appear opposite Rooney Mara in his next feature, which is apparently Soderbergh’s penultimate flick. The film stars Mara as a woman caught in a love triangle between her husband (Tatum), who has recently gotten out of prison, and her doctor, played by Jude Law. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Vinessa Shaw round out the cast. The film is billed as a “psychopharmacological thriller,” so whatever that means, expect a dark, gritty, intellectual tone, somewhere between Soderbergh’s last two pics: Contagion and Haywire (which also featured Tatum). This is clearly a film that should enable Tatum to show off some acting chops once again, and going up against a natural talent like Mara is sure to bring out the best in him. G.I. Joe: Retaliation Well, the guy’s got to put bread on the table, too. The last G.I. Joe film was woefully received by critics, but it made $300 million worldwide, enough to cover its $175 million budget (although with P&A expenditures and how revenue is divided, it’s unlikely Paramount made real money on it). In any event, this is the side of Tatum we’ve come to expect to see – but how much longer he’ll work these roles remains in question. Clinging on to action films for as long as possible is certainly a plausible route, but as the careers of co-star Bruce Willis or, say, Harrison Ford indicate, it’s not always the wisest one. Foxcatcher This is a great example of the type of highbrow fare Tatum has had trouble breaking into (until now). A long-gestating project for Moneyball helmer Bennett Miller, Foxcatcher is based on the true story of an eccentric, schizophrenic millionaire who would up building an enormous wrestling facility on his property – and then killing a US Olympic team wrestler. Mark Ruffalo will play the wrestler, Tatum will play his brother, and Steve Carrell has been cast as the schizophrenic. It’s obviously not the lead role, but visibility in a project like this – which could even be up for awards consideration – is a step in the right direction for Tatum’s serious side. White House Down This, like G.I. Joe , is basically standard genre fare, albeit with a little more prestige: Tatum will play a Secret Service agent tasked with protecting the President (rumor has it Jamie Foxx will play the commander-in-chief) from an imminent terrorist threat. Maggie Gyllenhaal is also on board. The film will be going head-to-head next year with a similarly themed project titled Olympus Has Fallen , starring Gerard Butler. (Now that’s a guy who needs a career makeover!) Jupiter Ascending The Wachowskis’ follow-up to the hotly anticipated Cloud Atlas adaptation will be an original film whose concept makes Cloud Atlas seem simplistic. (If you haven’t read Cloud Atlas , get thee to a bookstore!) The idea, in a nutshell, is that the film takes place in a world where DNA is the most highly prized commodity, and different strains of DNA enable humans to achieve different goals. One woman (Mila Kunis) has a perfect genetic code – too perfect! – and so bounty hunter Channing Tatum is dispatched to, well, dispatch of her. Unfortunately for the powers that be, they fall in love. Whether they succeed or fail, the Wachowskis always aim big, and this film has the potential to be a huge crowd-pleaser in the realm of Blade Runner or, of course, The Matrix . Lego: The Piece of Resistance Tatum will voice Superman in this animated film from Phil Lord and Chris Miller , who directed him in 21 Jump Street , another recent profile-booster that showcased Tatum’s talents. Tatum hasn’t done an animated film yet, so this is a smart expansion of what he’s capable of from a business standpoint, as well as with regard to his personal brand; being able to appeal to kids helps soften him out from getting typecast as the guy in the action movies. Plus: It’s Channing Tatum as Superman – LEGO Superman, but still. The Contortionist’s Handbook This adaptation of a 2002 novel has been in development since 2010, but Tatum (who is also a co-producer) is still looking to get it made. Tatum would star as a forger and con artist who is constantly creating new identities in order to evade the law. There’s no director attached, so it’s tough to say which direction the adaptation might head in, but the novel was released to acclaim upon publication, and it sounds like it might turn into a passion project for Tatum. Ho Sit Down (In First Class): Aubrey O’Day Gets Certified Insane So She Can Fly With Her “Emotional Support Animals”

GTFOHWTBS!!! We knew Aubrey O’Day was a dog lover but this is just ridiculous! Via TMZ : Aubrey O’Day is a certified headcase … so says one of her doctors, who issued the reality star an official medical document which allows her to bring her dogs on to an airplane. A rep for Virgin America airlines tells TMZ … the “Celebrity Apprentice” star was cleared to bring her 2 pets into the 1st class section of a flight this week … because they are registered as “Emotional Support Animals.” So how does one get emotional support animal clearance? Ya gotta have a doctor write a letter … stating you have mental issues. According to the Virgin America website, the airline requires the passenger to produce a letter from a licensed mental health professional which substantiates the guest’s disability-related need for the animal to accompany them in the aircraft cabin. V.A. claims the letter must state that the passenger “has a mental health-related disability” … and that having the animal accompany the passenger is necessary for his or her mental health. The nature of O’Day’s mental health issue is unclear. We called the starlet for comment. O’Day tweeted pics of the dogs enjoying themselves on the flight to San Francisco … and the V.A. rep tells us she was “incredibly sweet and polite” … and nothing short of a “great guest.” Check out lots of Aubrey’s flight related tweets and photos below.

Tea Party Hires African-American Consultant To Help Recruit Minorities Looks like the Tea Party is pulling out all the stops. FreedomWorks, a prominent tea party-aligned organization that supports the candidacies of conservative politicians, announced Monday that it hired prominent black conservative political consultant, Deneen Borelli , to help recruit minorities. According to a report in The Daily Caller on Monday, Borelli will serve as the group’s new director of outreach. “In her new role, Deneen will speak at events promoting FreedomWorks’ pro-liberty agenda, participate in recruiting grassroots activists — including minorities — and aggressively challenge the misleading voices of the liberal black establishment,” read the press release announcing Borelli’s hire. Borelli, author of Backslash: How Obama and the Left are riving Americans to the Government Plantation, is a contributor with the Fox News Channel and has been a featured speaker at FreedomWorks rallies for several years. ‘American Idol’ Top 10 Tune Up For Idols Live! Tour

‘It’s going to be a big learning experience,’ says ‘Idol’ champ Phillip Phillips of the 45-city tour. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Kelly Marino Phillip Phillips at the ‘Idols Live’ Rehearsals Photo: It’s hard enough for bands with one singer to get their musical heads together for a major summer tour. Just imagine coordinating a band with 10 lead singers and you can begin to see how much work goes into getting ready for this summer’s American Idols Live! Tour featuring the top singers from season 11. The top 10 have begun getting things together for the tour, which kicks off on July 6 in Detroit. They gathered in a studio in Los Angeles on Wednesday to continue getting their act together. During an a cappella run through One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” a smiling Phillip Phillips
stood in the back of the pack as fellow finalist Colton Dixon mussed up his pal’s hair. “I’m really excited, you know it’s all of our first time being on a real tour … it’s going to be a big learning experience,” said Phillips, just a few weeks removed from surgery to repair a chronic kidney problem
. “I’m feeling good,” he assured MTV News of the surgery, which followed eight surgeries during the run of the show to deal with recurring stones. For a period it was unclear if Phillips would be healed in time for the tour, but he’s clearly healed quickly enough make the trek. Phillips recently told the Associated Press that he’s “getting better each day, so that’s a good thing. I’m just walking around, getting my strength back together. It was tough, you know, those first few days, but I’m getting to where I can pick the guitar back up and write a little bit.” Runner-up Jessica Sanchez was reveling in getting the old crew together again. “It’s so much fun … it’s just like the old days when we were first auditioning and everyone was just a big family and just jamming out.” Her pal, country gal Skylar Laine, added, “Every day we come in here and rehearse and just sing our songs and do our group songs and it’s a blast.” Dixon promised that the live show is “completely different” from what viewers saw on TV. The experience will also be new for the singers, since instead of a few thousand in a studio audience, they will be looking at more than 10,000 screaming fans in arenas. “We’re gonna be like, ‘what do we do with that?’,” he said. Rocker chick Elise Testone promised that you will see the contestants singing backup for one another, performing duets and group songs and putting more of their personalities into the songs. “It’s a perfect mix between favorite moments form the show …. And a whole mix of new stuff too,” Erika Van Pelt said. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page, where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Justin Bieber Forced To Play Unplugged Show After Apollo Power Outage

By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber Photo: Judging by the screams and massive crowds that follow him whenever he performs live, Justin Bieber has a penchant for blowing his fans’ minds. But on Monday night during a private show at Harlem, New York’s legendary Apollo Theater he also blew out the power grid. According to the Associated Press , Bieber was forced to finish the show unplugged after the power went out at the venue near the end of the show. Most of the stage instruments lost juice and manager Scooter Braun said the problem caused the singer to improvise. “Then we hear the fire alarm,” Braun explained “Literally, the boy blew up the Apollo — he heated up the Apollo.” Before the show, Bieber tweeted that the gig was a special one for him given the history of the storied venue, which has hosted everyone from James Brown, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder to Mariah Carey and, recently, former Beatle Paul McCartney. “A lot of emotions in the building,” he wrote . “This one is special. This one is for MJ.” A short time later, he joked, “Me and @ludacris blew up the power at the @ApolloTheater. Haha. Epic. #beastmode … A night none of us will ever forget!! That is how u end an #AllAroundTheWorld run!!! With no power for the last song … my fans sang it 4 me!” The power outage only affected the stage instruments and some lighting and while Braun was told the problem would be solved in a few minutes, it went on for more than 40 minutes. Bieber tried to have fun with the glitch at first, joking that it was all the “hot girls in here,” according to Apollo rep Nina Flowers, who ranked the snafu as a classic “Apollo moment.” MTV News has rounded up all the vital information to get you up to speed on today’s album release. Also, be sure to tune in on tonight for MTV’s “Bieber Live,”
where Justin will dish about his new album at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT. The 18-year-old pro hardly missed a beat, jumping behind the drums for a solo and asking the crowd to serenade Braun for his birthday. Though he was happy to vamp for a bit, at some point Braun said Bieber got frustrated when the power outage went on for nearly an hour because the show was being taped as part of an NBC special slated to air later this week in celebration of his new album, Believe
. He got over it and rewarded the crowd that had stuck with him during the outage by performing his hit single “Boyfriend” with some audience participation. “He walks out, he literally quiets the crowd, and he says, ‘I’m sorry the power is out. . (But) you guys have always had my back. I’m going to sing ‘Boyfriend’ and you’re going to sing it back to me,'” Braun said. Flowers didn’t know what caused the power to run out, but she gave Bieber props for his professionalism. “He could have stopped; he could have not gone on and said, I did everything . but he came back on,” she said. Don’t miss “Bieber Live”

First Official Image of Lindsay Lohan As Elizabeth Taylor in Liz & Dick

Yep, it’s happening. A week and change after finding their Dick Burton among True Blood ‘s werewolf population, Lindsay Lohan and the makers of Lifetime’s Liz & Dick have released the first production image from the romance-biopic. And, well… it’s kind of shockingly classy. If you squint, LiLo and Grant Bowler actually kinda sorta look like the iconic couple. Anyone else pleasantly surprised? According to E! , who’s documenting La Lohan’s would-be comeback with the same aplomb as it did her shaky past few years, the still was shot last week while filming officially began today. Over to producer Larry Thompson for the oversharing update: Thompson tells E! News that the first scenes were shot this morning starting around 9:30 AM and they were of Liz and Dick on a yacht (docked at Marina del Rey). He also reveals that the cast was in good spirits: “A little first-day jitters for everyone, but it went well,” he revealed, while adding that Lindsay was in a good mood as well. I’m still getting over how much Lohan resembles Taylor, even at an angle and in profile and doused in heavy eye make-up. Then again, this is the very first day of filming , people. A little early to call this one — the biopic is set to air on November 3 — but ever so promising… [via Deadline ]

That’s My Boy: 9 Life Lessons — and Mad Rhymes — from Vanilla Ice

Stop. Collaborate and listen. Ice is back with a brand new invention. No, really! He is. Rob Van Winkle, who you know as ‘90s rap sensation Vanilla Ice, has a major role in this summer’s new Adam Sandler comedy That’s My Boy , in which he plays himself, Vanilla Ice. The set-up: Donny Berger (Sandler) became famous in the ‘80s for having an affair with his hot teacher. Donny knew Ice from the flash in the pan/has-been circuit, and goes back to hang out with Ice when he reunites with the grown son ( Andy Samberg ) he fathered. Winkle joined the stars of That’s My Boy at a press conference over the weekend, and he stole the panel right from Sandler and Samberg. He’s still dropping mad rhymes, and they’re full of wisdom from his 20 years of growing up and self-reflection on the Vanilla Ice days. We could all take a lesson from Vanilla Ice, so start with some of these. 1. No slippin’ on your pimpin’. “You keep your hustle tight and you never get caught slippin’ on your pimpin’,” Winkle said when the panel was asked how they deal with failures in their careers. Our takeaway is that he has not been slippin’ on his pimpin’, since Winkle keeps working, even on reality shows like Surreal Life and Celebrity Bull Riding . “If you get caught slippin’ on your pimpin’ you’re up sh*t creek without a paddle.” 2. Well, just in case you need that paddle… If you end up paddle-less in a creek, all is not lost. “Learn how to swim through the trenches and get to the other side and when you get there it’ll be paradise for you. I was in the trenches, trying to get to the other side. Sh*t creek, I found a paddle. [Sandler] helped me with the other paddle and here we are.” 3. Embrace the past. “We are who we are because of who we were, which I had to accept, and there’s a little truth to that,” Winkle said when we asked if he’s always thinking in deep wisdom and mad rhymes. 4. Look to the future. “Yesterday’s history, tomorrow is a mystery,” Winkle said when asked if this movie comeback could lead to a Cool As Ice 2. Not only would a Cool as Ice sequel be awesome, it’s also good advice in general. “Take it day by day, man. Get in where you fit in and enjoy the ride. You never know about it.” 5. These mad rhymes matter. These slogans kept the press laughing, but Winkle explained he truly uses them to get through life. “That’s one thing I’ve learned, I live off these little phrases. It’s not all jokes, but these little phrases, they’re more valuable than thousands of dollars worth of therapy to me. They make sense.” 6. Love yourself. “Be yourself, enjoy yourself,” was another one of Winkle’s life lessons. More specifically, find the place that’s right for you, whether it’s rapping or starring in an Adam Sandler movie. “I just get in where I fit in.” 7. Be happy. In a genre of music that can often spiral into anger and violence, positivity is important. “Show me a smile and I’ll show you one back. They’re contagious. So, it works for me. Stay positive, good things happen. Look where I’m at.” 8. Mind the company you keep. It also matters who you let in your life. The Sandler crew was good for Winkle, but be careful of your entourage. “Show me who your friends are and I’ll show you who you are. Karma, believe in it. It’s real. It comes back to you.” 9. Listen to your mother (and word to her!) Since the film is about an embarrassing parent, the panel was asked what they learned from their parents. Winkle shared his mother’s lesson. Maybe mad wisdom runs in the family. “My mom always told me, ‘Act smarter than you are. Always know where your exit is in case you get into too much trouble.’” To borrow from the immortal popular words of Mr. Van Winkle: If there was a problem, yo, he’ll solve it. That’s My Boy opens June 15.

Madonna Kicks Off MDNA Tour Wrapped In Israeli Flag

Singer totes rifle, dances with monks and dresses up as marching band conductor during high-energy Tel Aviv concert on Thursday. By Gil Kaufman Madonna in her MDNA tour in Tel Aviv, Israel Photo: Getty Images Leave it to the queen of contradiction, Madonna , to kick off her world tour
in support of MDNA in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Thursday night by making a plea for peace in the Middle East during a show in which she brandished a machine gun and a revolver. Performing in front of 32,000 fans at a sold-out Ramat Gan Stadium, Madonna dubbed the show a “Concert for Peace” and handed out hundreds of tickets to Israeli peace activists, according to Israeli newspaper Ha’Aretz . The night was full of the usual mix of controversial images, bare-chested, buff male dancers and multiple high-fashion costume changes from the 53-year-old pop icon. Madonna opened the concert amid images of both crosses and satanic symbols as she took the stage to perform “Girl Gone Wild,” by breaking through the glass window of a confessional using a rifle, according to an Associated Press report. Wearing a black, skintight outfit, she performed the song accompanied by a troupe of dancers dressed as monks. She followed with “Gang Bang,” during which the huge onstage screens filled with blood stains and she brandished the firearms while wrestling with armed intruders. Another song, “Revolver,” had Madonna swinging around a Kalashnikov rifle as her dancers spun around holding Uzi machine guns. Making good on her rehearsed shout-out/dis
of Lady Gaga , “Express Yourself” bled into a bit of Mother Monster’s “Born This Way,” ending with the repeated refrain, “she’s not me.” For that song and the first MDNA single, “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” she was dressed as a marching band conductor and was surrounded by similarly dressed cheerleaders and drum majors. The show also featured several appearance by Madonna’s 11-year-old son, Rocco, who wore a monk’s robe and shiny blue t-shirt and orange headphones as he danced along to mum’s tunes. Madonna is not Jewish, but is a devotee of the Jewish mystical practice of Kabbalah, and the AP reported that at one point in the show she wrapped herself in an Israeli flag and called Israel the “energy center of the world.” According to Ha’Aretz , she also took an opportunity to address the audience about the prospects of long-elusive peace in the Middle East. “You can’t be a fan of mine and not want peace in the world,” she said during the two-hour show at the start of her most extensive world tour ever. “We all bleed the same color. If we can all rise above our egos and our titles and the names of our countries and our religions, and treat everyone around us with dignity and respect, then we are on the road to peace. If there is peace here in the Middle East, there can be peace in the whole world.” Related Artists Madonna
