Appeasement Doesn’t Work: Fatwa Issued Against ‘Draw Mohammed Day’ Cartoonist

The Islamists mean to censor us one way or another: if not from fear of retaliation, then by retaliation. Shut your mouth, still your pens, stop thinking, or we will do it for you. Permanently. Molly Norris, mild-mannered cartoonist, started a fire she cannot put out. As Rick Santelli’s “rant” on TV from the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade fueled the Tea Party, Norris inspired thousands revolt against Islam. In a desiderative whim, she drew innocuous, refrigerator-door magnet caliber pictures which she claimed were images of Mohammad: a spool of thread, a teacup, a spoon, and other mundane things. Overall, they looked more like idle doodles than passionate expressions of the freedom of speech. She posted them in protest of Viacom’s Comedy Central forbidding its cartoon show, “South Park,“ to depict Mohammad in a bear suit. That spawned the immensely popular “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!” on Facebook. And thousands did draw. It is interesting to note that one can invite people to “draw Lincoln,” and we would see images of Lincoln ranging from good to unrecognizable. But how does one draw an image of a person whose face has never been seen, except in imagination? Imagination took hold. Numerous responses have appeared on Facebook where artists comment, “We have reached 50,000 members. As the news of the rebellion against the attacks to our liberties are heard, brave people join the campaign to stave of those who would annihilate that which we believe in, freedom. Thomas Jefferson’s quote is also on the Facebook page. “All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.” Americans and their friends across the globe responded en masse. The defiance was overwhelming, producing more cartoons than the Danish could draw, many of them ingenious. For a while, everyone was a Guy Fawkes , or a Paul Revere, or a Joan of Arc. But — Molly Norris was criticized. Islam answered . Muslims demonstrated . Shut up. Molly Norris recanted . She didn’t mean to offend Muslims. She was only expressing her right to freedom of speech. But — Molly Norris was criticized. Islam answered. Muslims demonstrated. Shut up. Too late. Contrition doesn’t carry much weight in Islam. No one has a right to offend Islam, or blaspheme against it. Whether Mohammad is depicted as a pedophilic ogre, as a knock-off of Charlton Heston’s Moses , or as a teacup, it matters not. It is forbidden. “Sorry” doesn’t cut it. Facebook also caved to Muslim demands and took down the page. A fatwa has been issued against her and anyone who participated in Everybody Draw Mohammad Day. It appeared in an Al Qada online “magazine” and was issued by a former American turned Muslim cleric, Anwar Al-Awlaki, who now lives in hiding in Yemen. Molly Norris is now a “prime target” to be murdered. “A cartoonist out of Seattle, Washington, named Molly Norris started the ‘Everyone Draw Mohammed Day,’” the article attributed to the radical Yemeni cleric says. “She should be taken as a prime target of assassination, along with others who participated in her campaign. “The large number of participants makes it easier for us because there are many targets to choose from,” reads the article in the magazine of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP. The killings should not, however, be limited to “Draw Mohammed” participants, the article says. “Because (participants) are practicing a ‘right’ that is defended by the law, they have the backing of the entire Western political system. This would make… attacking any Western target legal from an Islamic viewpoint.” Molly Norris should know that Islamic “legality” is consistently, irratinal and brutal. It is not a matter of a slap on the wrist and a fine. Submission to Islam must be total — or not at all. The “justice” metted out to those who only partially submit is perilous. Even Muslims are not exempt from it. So, Molly Norris’s life, and that of anyone who drew Mohammad on Facebook, is in danger. So is the right to freedom of speech. The law that defends it is also fair game. The First Amendment is targeted for assassination, as well, not only by President Barack Obama’s wannabe censors, but by Islamists who want to replace the Constitution with Sharia law . Anwar All-Whacky is just as determined to see censorship imposed as is Cass Sunstein (by government force) or Stanley Fish (censorship by proxy). Excuse the mocking nickname; my powers of illustration fail me. Stanley Fish , self-appointed academic ombudsman of free speech, quibbles about the use of the term censorship , not understanding, or not wishing to understand, that if fear results in the silencing of speech — a fear sired by the threat of direct force, or of a costly, ruinous lawsuit — that is as much censorship as the employment of force itself. So what Random House did was not censorship. (Some other press is perfectly free to publish Jones’s book, and one probably will.) It may have been cowardly or alarmist, or it may have been good business, or it may have been an attempt to avoid trouble that ended up buying trouble. But whatever it was, it doesn’t rise to the level of constitutional or philosophical concern. And it is certainly not an episode in some “showdown between Islam and the Western tradition of free speech.” Formulations like that at once inflate a minor business decision and trivialize something too important and complex to be reduced to a high-school civics lesson about the glories of the First Amendment. Fish manages to denigrate not only Salman Rushdie in his New York Times piece, but also business itself. He has no grasp of what is fundamentally of “constitutional or philosophical concern.” It’s all so trivial, nothing to get worked up about. Save your concern for something important. And that would be…? “The large number of participants makes it easier for us because there are many targets to choose from,” boasted All-Whacky. True. How are he and his American proxies going to find and slay 50,000 offenders? No problem. He has designated any Western target for destruction. Perhaps someone who “drew Mohammad” will be one of the bomb victims. How better to vitiate the First Amendment than to frighten men from upholding it? Those who refrain from drawing Mohammad, or from satirizing him and his Moonie-like flocks in word or deed out of “respect” or “tolerance,” or from sheer funk, or who counsel others to refrain, are just as culpable in the loss of that liberty as any Washington censor or duty-bound Muslim. Of course, one needn’t have drawn Mohammad to become a prime target for assassination. Watching a soccer match in Uganda is also a punishable offense. Or publishing an Islam-friendly novel about the adventures of Mohammad’s child bride – without illustrations. Or an imageless history of the images of Mohammad. Or employing terms that identify the enemy in national security reports (that would be “profiling” a “religion of peace”). Those who drew Mohammad last spring cannot all go into hiding, as doubtless Molly Norris must now do. The FBI has advised her to take the threat seriously. There are countless Muslims — itinerate loners or residents of Muslim enclaves in this country or the patrons of the proposed Ground Zero Mosque — willing to do All-Whacky’s bidding. We are at war with Islam, and the enemy is amongst us. Is America fated to become a nation-in-hiding? You, the reader, decide. Our government will not acknowledge the war declared against us. It is up to Americans acknowledge it, and to never surrender this country to Islam or to its secular, Obama-esque form — to never let it go.

Killer of Five Children Executed in Ohio; AP Story Allows Half-Truths and Untruths to Live On

In October 2007, I put up a BizzyBlog post (also cross-posted at the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s short-lived Wide Open Blog ) about William Garner (pictured at right), the Ohio man who killed five children (three of them and the lone survivor also pictured at right) to cover up a burglary in 1992. At the time, it appeared that Garner’s date with the executioner had been indefinitely called off, for specious Miranda-related reasons that you have to read to believe (and even then, it will be difficult). On Tuesday, Garner’s attempts to avoid his death sentence ultimately failed. Sadly, the Associated Press’s unbylined coverage of  his execution by lethal injection Tuesday allowed Garner and his lawyers to put forth one final batch of half-truths and untruths that require refutation (bolds and numbered tags are mine): An Ohio man said he was “heartily sorry” for his carelessness (1) before he was executed Tuesday for the murders of five children in a 1992 Cincinnati apartment fire he set in an attempt to destroy evidence of a burglary. William Garner, 37, died at 10:38 a.m. at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, 18 minutes after the lethal injection began. As he lay on the execution table, Garner held a dreadlock of hair from a female friend and read a mostly inaudible lengthy final statement from notebook paper held by the execution team leader. He thanked several people as well as the state of Ohio. “I’m heartily sorry,” he said. “God bless everyone who has been robbed in this procedure. I thought I’d never be free, but I’m free now.” Garner was sentenced to death for the Jan. 26, 1992, pre-dawn deaths of the children in the apartment of Addie Mack, who was in the emergency room of a nearby hospital. Garner had stolen keys from her purse while she received care and took a cab to the apartment to steal a television, radio, VCR and telephone. Four girls and two boys, ages 8 to 13, were at the apartment alone, and Garner knew they were there when he threw a lit match onto a couch. Garner has admitted setting the fire but said he thought the children would escape (2). Only one, 13-year-old Rod Mack, made it out alive. … Because so many people wanted to witness the execution on behalf of the young victims, the prison opened a second viewing room, prisons spokeswoman Julie Walburn said. Six witnesses for the victims and Garner’s niece and legal team were accommodated in the witness room facing the execution chamber, and another three victims’ witnesses watched on closed-circuit TV in the spillover room, she said. … Garner had said a secondary motivation for setting the fire was to draw attention to the children’s squalid living conditions (3). He told police that he had noticed the bedroom “full of girls” and that one of them had asked him for water, which he provided, according to a report by the Ohio Parole Board. He also said he had been in another bedroom where the two boys slept. His lawyers had argued that the death sentences be set aside because Garner had developmental disabilities, a limited IQ and a violent, abusive upbringing (4) that caused him to function on the level of a 14-year-old at the time of the deaths. How is this AP story incomplete and wrong? Let’s count the ways. But first, brace yourself for the horror that follows. A Cincinnati Enquirer report that is no longer available but is excerpted at the October 2007 BizzyBlog post shows that Garner was a cold-blooded, calculating burglar who did everything he could not to leave any tracks, even if it meant killing six children who were sleeping (as noted earlier, one got out alive): Hours before the fire, Garner slipped into University Hospital, looking for an easy mark. There, he found (apartment unit residents Marshandra) Jackson and Addie Mack, who had fallen and hurt her wrist. Garner snatched up Mack’s purse when she wasn’t looking, stealing money and her apartment keys. He took a taxi to the English Woods apartment, telling the driver to wait while he retrieved his belongings. He carted out electronic equipment, at one point waking up one of the children. Garner spun a tale about her mother sending him to check everyone and sent her back to bed with a glass of water. Before leaving, Garner set three fires in the apartment. Then, he grabbed the phone and smoke detectors and left … Now let’s get to the bolded and tagged items in the AP excerpt. (1) – “Carelessness”? The Enquirer excerpt, which originates in Garner’s original police questioning and confession, thoroughly discredits that risible claim. (2) – He “thought the children would escape”? He set three fires, plural (i.e., earth to AP, he did a lot more than throw “a lit match on a couch”). He removed the landline phone and the smoke detectors. How were these children supposed to call for help? How were they going to escape if they weren’t going to wake up until the flames were already out of control? (3) – He wanted “to draw attention to the children’s squalid living conditions”? Mr. Garner had a sick way of demonstrating his concern. The original Enquirer article gave no indication that Mr. Garner had such “noble” thoughts, and I daresay you won’t find any such thoughts expressed in police or legal documents relating to the original arrest and trial. (4) He had “developmental disabilities, a limited IQ and a violent, abusive upbringing”? Gee, he was clever enough to sneak in and out of a hospital; patient enough to wait for the right moment to snatch a purse; cool-headed enough to keep one of his victims calm, giving her a drink of water before sending her back to bed; and sufficiently forward-thinking to disconnect the children’s two best defenses against getting burned alive. Nobody had the slightest reason to believe that Garner was disabled or mentally challenged in 1992 when he was arrested and confessed, or when he was tried and convicted. There’s plenty of reason to believe that his lawyers’ contention while Garner was on Death Row was a fundamentally dishonest, after-the-fact concoction with no basis in fact whose only purpose was to prevent the state from carrying out its sentence. The AP’s weak coverage of Garner’s heinous crime is perhaps instructive to all who read future establishment press dispatches concerning death-penalty executions. The lesson is that the true story and full circumstances of what the killer did may be much worse than what the press chooses to tell readers on Execution Day. Cross-posted at BizzyBlog.com .

A Full iPhone 4 Recall Would Cost $1.5 Billion, Analyst Said

There has been an impending or a possible recall all of Apple’s sold iPhone 4. This is due to the heightened issue regarding the defect of its latest gadget’s antenna. Consumer Reports, an American magazine which publishes reviews and comparisons of consumer products and services based on reporting and results from its in-house testing laboratory, has released an article just recently that they won’t recommending Apple’s iPhone 4 due to it’s antenna defect. There has been reports from those who got the iPhone 4 already that if a finger would be placed on the bottom left of the phone, the signal would be reduced or even cause the call to drop entirely. Sanford C. Bernstein & Co analyst Toni Sacconaghi said a full product recall of the iPhone 4 would represent the equivalent of about 5 weeks of free cash flow or about 3.5% of its total cash balance and it would sum up to $1.5 billion. If Apple will not pursue the recall, their integrity and name would be compromised. “While logical arguments can be made that suggest that iPhone momentum remains strong and the antenna issue can be “solved” with a rubber case, the press appears to be increasingly crying foul at Apple, which suggests that Apple’s image – and potentially iPhone sales – could be compromised if Apple does not explicitly – and constructively – address the issue of what it believes is wrong with the phone and how it will address it,” Sacconaghi wrote. -cbsnews Apple is blaming the problem initially to a miscalculation within the formula which is used to determine how many signal bars should be displayed and it is basically an optical illusion. Consumer Reports as well as other analysts would not buy this reason. In fact, Larry Barton, Former Vice President of Crisis Management of Motorola just told Cult of Mac that Apples response has been “Lackluster’. If you’re an iPhone 4 owner, pleas feel free to share your sentiments of your new gadget in here. Dem Crack Up? Bill Press, Schultz Rip Reid For Calling Obama Weak

Hot stock tip: ConAgra Foods, makers of . . . Orville Redenbacher’s popcorn 😉 But seriously, shall we sit back and savor an incipient Dem implosion? Drudge has links up about the White House waving the white flag, having a “credibility crisis,” and hitting the panic button. This evening’s Ed Show gave another hot and salty taste of the Dem meltdown, as Ed ripped Harry Reid for calling Pres. Obama, in Schultz’s words, “a big wimp.” In a formal TV interview, Reid has accused PBO of being insufficiently “firm” and “forceful” and described him as “a person who doesn’t like confrontation.” Lib talker Bill Press also hit Harry, but at the same time effectively agreed with Reid’s critique, saying that Obama had been too nice to Republicans and that “nobody in this town is afraid of Pres. Obama.” Schultz, meanwhile, accused Reid of being a weak leader. Schultz began by accusing Reid of landing a “sucker punch” on PBO, and went from there. So fire up the microwave, blast up a batch of Orville’s best, click the video, and enjoy some entertaining Dem internecine warfare!

Contractor Vents About BP’s Shady Spill Response (Video)

Image via Kid K Adam Dillon was a contractor for BP, and worked to help coordinate the spill cleanup of effort. His first appearance on television found him chasing reporters of a spill-impacted sight in the middle of a news segment for WDSU in New Orleans. Now, the tides have turned, and Dillon is willfully going to the press himself. After seeing firsthand how BP is orchestrating its cleanup effort, and bearing witness to some of its more secretive policies — and getting fired for photographing sensitive sites — he’s decided to go public with the story. Video is after the jump. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

GORDON DUFF: CLASSIFIED CIA TRANSCRIPT COUNTERS BIN LADEN TERROR ROLE : Veterans Today

DOUBT THROWN ON PROOF BIN LADEN A TERRORIST LEADER By Gordon Duff STAFF WRITER/Senior Editor Two weeks ago, CIA Director Leon Panetta told the press the CIA had not been able to positively confirm any specific information on Osama bin Laden since “late 2000.” Interviews with high ranking military and intelligence officials, some at the highest levels, have confirmed that all evidence lends toward Osama bin Laden’s death in December 2001. Yet transcripts of translated audio and video tapes, albeit widely disputed, are continually released by a news agency tied to Israeli intelligence services. The transcripts of the last proven bin Laden interview, translated by the CIA, are compared to similar translations of a 2007 “broadcast” said to be by Osama bin Laden. Both are excerpted for length but not content. Striking differences between the two “bin Ladens” is obvious. In 2007, in a lengthy admonition, no mention of Israel is made whatsoever, nor of Palestine. In fact, the bin Laden of 2007 seems to be totally oblivious of Israel. We will begin with the CIA document, one that directly disputes claims made by the media for years. We thank the Central Intelligence Agency for making this document available. With dozens of films, videos and recordings, all claiming Osama bin Laden has taken credit for 9/11 and other terrorist attacks against America, Britain, Spain and other nations, the possession of the only official translation of the real Osama bin Laden is vital. What you are going to be reading is both astounding and frightening. More at the link: added by: Monkey_Films

Man Indicted In ‘American Idol’ Hopeful Alexis Cohen’s Hit-And-Run Death

Daniel J. Bark, 24, charged with four counts, including aggravated manslaughter and death by auto. By Gil Kaufman Alexis Cohen during her “American Idol” audition Photo: Fox The man who struck and killed high-energy “American Idol” wannabe Alexis Cohen last year in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, was indicted on Thursday and charged with aggravated manslaughter and other crimes in the incident. According to the Asbury Park Press, a grand jury handed up a four-count indictment on 24-year-old Daniel J. Bark , charging him with aggravated manslaughter, death by auto, eluding police and knowingly leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in a death in the late-night July 25 incident that took the life of 25-year-old Cohen. The singer was best known for her raucous attitude and a lively banter with judges that made her an audience favorite when she unsuccessfully tried out for “Idol” in seasons seven and eight. Her lifeless body was found on the street in a residential New Jersey neighborhood around 5 a.m. last July after police said she’d been struck by a vehicle, suffering fatal head and torso injuries. An hour before Cohen’s body was discovered, Bark was stopped by Seaside Heights police, who issued a number of motor-vehicle summonses, including driving while intoxicated, according to the paper. Those summonses were executed after Bark allegedly fled from officers pursuing him on bicycle and he struck a parked car in the parking lot of a popular local nightspot, Hemingway’s. He fled into the vicinity of Cohen’s fatality, and when officers in patrol cars eventually stopped him a few blocks away, they were able to connect him to Cohen’s death. Police also determined that Cohen, a native of Allentown, Pennsylvania, had been drinking that night as well. If convicted, Bark is facing a prison term of 10 to 30 years for the aggravated manslaughter charge, along with an additional five to 10 years for the charges of eluding police, death by auto and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. He remains in jail, unable to post the $150,000 bail.

Mika: ‘Cut The Crap’ On Palin Prez-Run Fan Dance

Mika Brzezinski wants to “cut the crap” when it comes to building speculation as to whether Sarah Palin will run for president in 2012.  According to Mika, Palin’s candidacy is a done deal, and the press is letting itself be sucked into a phony build-up. Mika is so sure that Sarah is running that on today’s Morning Joe she was willing to wager a dubious Jonathan Capehart $1,000.  Brzezinski’s comments came in response to Politico’s report , highlighted by Mike Allen, that Palin has raised significant money and built a nascent campaign staff. Speaking of fan dances, let’s take a walk down memory lane with this 2004 statement from a certain junior senator from Illinois: I can unequivocally say I will not be running for national office in four years, and my entire focus is making sure that I’m the best possible senator on behalf of the people of Illinois . . . I am not running for president in 2008. The only reason I’m being definitive is because until I’m definitive you will keep asking me this question, but it’s a silly question. — Sen. Barack Obama, 2004 If only he’d stuck to his word . . .

Michael Caine Says Batman 3 Shooting in April

Never trust Gary Oldman again . While on the press circuit for The Book of Eli in 2009, Commissioner Gordon told reporters that Christopher Nolan would begin shooting Batman 3 this year with an eye toward a 2011 release. Bzzzt! Not according to Michael Caine. The coolest actor alive — seriously, right guys? — told reporters at the London premiere of Inception that Nolan was planning to shoot his sequel to The Dark Knight in April. Take that with the giant grain of salt it deserves, but hey — an April shoot could mean the finished product will be hit theaters just in time for the superhero apocalypse in the summer of 2012. Andrew Garfield, get ready to shake in your Spidey-tights. After the jump, video of Caine — who also offers a slight spoiler on his role in Inception .
