Top 12 TV Moments of 2012: The Year on the Small Screen!

From a soldier-turned-spy-turned-confused-lover to the transformation of a high school junior into a vampire, the world of television was filled with plenty of jaw-dropping moments in 2012. And we’ve collected the 12 best below. As part of our year-end series (check out our Top Memes of 2012 , along with the Top Videos of the past dozen months), THG now takes readers through the small screen scenes and developments that left us uttering: O… M…G! ——————————————- 12. The Grey’s Anatomy plane crash . Was it typically contrived drama from Shonda Rhimes? Of course. But long-time viewers of this ABC favorite can’t deny the deadly impact of that flight hitting the ground in May. 11. Bill Compton goes bad . Yes, True Blood Season 5 really went there. Every time you thought Sookie’s first love would admit he was simply playing a long con, the series continued to drive the shocking fact home: Bill really did believe every evil word out of his mouth. Then he turned into some kind of gooey new being. 10. Gossip Girl is revealed . Just a couple years ago, this would have been in contention for top moment of the TV year. But The CW drama fell out of favor even with long-time fans and, by the end of its run, was drawing under one million viewers per week. Dan Humphrey as Gossip Girl? Not a bad choice, but we stopped caring ages ago. 9. Game of Thrones, “Blackwater.” Just the entire episode. Not just the most action-packed hour of Game of Thrones Season 2 , or the most action-packed hour of television in 2012. Probably the most action on the small and big screen of the past year. Amazing visuals all around. 8. Opie has got this . One of the saddest deaths of the year took place early on Sons of Anarchy Season 5 , as a lead pipe to the skull led to the demise of Ryan Hurst’s tough, big-hearted character. A stunning, violent death and the driving force of the rest of the season. 7. And the bride-to-be is… We’re still waiting to learn the identity of the Mother, but How I Met Your Mother revealed Barney’s bride to close out Season 7. It’s Robin! We witnessed his adorable proposal to conclude this show’s run in 2012. 6. Elena, transformed! One wrong turned changed The Vampire Diaries forever, as Elena and Matt drove off the road on the Season 3 finale of this CW hit, leading to an infusion of vampire blood into the former and a shot to the heart of a series that had been floundering a bit last spring. 5. A birth and a death. The Walking Dead Season 3 has been filled with blood, gore and shocking events. But none more than Lori giving birth AND dying on the same installment. Seriously, no one on this show is safe. 4. A now! Pretty Little Liars finally unveiled the identity of A. Of course, there’s still an entire team behind this key villain, meaning the ABC Family drama may never answer its primary question. But, think about it fans, would you really want it to? 3. Lena Dunham gets naked . And does everything else, too: write, produce and star in Girls , the breakout show of the past 12 months. 2. Oh, sit! Breaking Bad finally opens Hank’s eyes to the identity of his brother-in-law, in a manner no fans of this AMC smash could have seen coming: while sitting on the toilet. There’s nothing we’re looking forward to more in 2013 than the final eight episodes of Breaking Bad season 5 . 1. Carrie gets her man. Television’s most stunning moment did not take place on a premiere or finale, but rather the fourth episode of Homeland season 2 , summing up the incredible pace of this Showtime drama. Carrie Matheson outing Brody as a spy and cuffing her nemesis/lover – this early in the program’s run – was as unexpected as anything we saw on TV all year. Our jaws haven’t left the floor since.

Lucy Hale Covers Haute Muse, Addresses Anastasia Steele Rumors

Lucy Hale has made a big name for herself on Pretty Little Liars . But she would make an absolutely huge name for herself if she earned the role of Anastasia Steele in the big screen adaption of Fifty Shades of Grey . Hale has already expressed interest in the part, but she tempers expectations a bit in the latest issue of Haute Muse . “I’m definitely a huge fan of the books. Obviously I’d be thrilled to be a part of it, but I think it’s in the very beginning stages of it all,” the actress tells the magazine. Hale has also signed a recording contract and will release a country album some time in 2013. She hopes, at least. “We’re exploring what we want my sound to be and what I want to talk about in my album. It’s kind of hard with my schedule to fit in both the filming and music, so we’re hoping to release it by next year. It’s a very exciting time in my life.” Do you want to see Lucy Hale as Anastasia Steele?

Exclusive: Lucy Hale Is Going Country On First Album

‘I grew up in Tennessee, so that’s always been my heart and soul,’ the ‘Pretty Little Liars’ star tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Lucy Hale Photo: “Pretty Little Liars” star Lucy Hale is expanding her horizons beyond her successful acting career and spreading her wings to (hopefully) soar into an equally successful music career. The multitalented 23-year-old recently inked a recording deal with Hollywood Records , which is the same label that brought us the chart-topping vocal stylings of Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato. MTV News was lucky enough to sit down with Hale recently for an exclusive chat about how she came to land a recording contract with Hollywood Records and what plans she has for her first album. “Some people know, some people don’t know: I grew up performing, I grew up singing, and I never knew which route I was going to take,” said Hale, who first showcased her singing skills on the talent competition “American Juniors” in 2003. “Acting took off for a while and I booked [‘Pretty Little Liars’], and I did a movie last year, ‘Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song,’ and I played a singer, and so that’s sort of how Hollywood [Records heard me].” Hale then landed a meeting with Hollywood Records head Ken Bunt, who was eager to work with her and wanted to make the music Hale was most passionate about. “I told him [I wanted to sing] country, so I’m going to do a country/pop album, and I couldn’t be more excited,” she said. “I grew up in Tennessee, so that’s always been my heart and soul. It’s hard to come across a true country fan in L.A., but it’s true that the fans are so loyal, once you’re in their circle, you’re in for your entire career. It just really speaks to me. Country music has so much soul and is so heartfelt. I think it’s a perfect fit for me. I think it will surprise people.” So which country singers does Hale look to for inspiration? “I love all [kinds of country artists], but comparing what my sound would be like? A Taylor Swift/ Carrie Underwood-ish hybrid? Obviously, I would kill to have their music careers,” she said. “I’m not saying I will have that career, but sound-wise, I would say it’s closest to that.” Look for Hale’s first country album to hit the airwaves sometime next year.

Selena Gomez Fans, Prepare To Be ‘Shocked’ By ‘Spring Breakers’

Former Disney star talks to MTV News about ‘taking risks’ in her upcoming flick. By Cory Midgarden Selena Gomez Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Selena Gomez is all grown up. The former “Wizards of Waverly Place” actress has traded in her Mickey Mouse ears for a two-toned bikini and a whole lot of scandal in the upcoming “Spring Breakers.” “People will be a little shocked, I think,” Gomez told MTV News while promoting her new self-titled fragrance in New York on Saturday. “I’m a little nervous about it but honestly it’s a right step for me, I’m really proud of it.” Also shaking their squeaky-clean images in the flick are “Pretty Little Liars” star Ashley Benson and Disney alum Vanessa Hudgens. The film follows the girls as they head to Florida for spring break, where they find themselves behind bars after robbing a restaurant. “I think as an actress it really challenged me,” Gomez said. “All of the other actresses are also trying to prove themselves, so it was just really, really fun.” Although Gomez is taking more chances with both her acting and music, there is still one role that is a little too racy for the 19-year-old: “Fifty Shades of Grey.” “I know I’m taking risks but I don’t think I could do that,” she told MTV News. “That would be a little too much for me.” Gomez became familiar with the hot and heavy storyline after being approached to star in Funny or Die’s “Fifty Shades of Blue.” “When they told me about the skit, I didn’t know what [‘Fifty Shades of Grey’] was about, so I started to read it and was like, oh, this is spicy, I thought it was good, it was intriguing,” she said. “The skit was really funny.” So with all of this research under her belt, who does the 19-year-old think should play S&M-loving Christian Grey’s object of affection? “Someone older should do that part,” she replied. What are your thoughts on a more mature Selena Gomez? Sound off in the comments below! Drake Might Rename Mixtape After ‘Y.O.L.O.’ Becomes ‘Epidemic’

‘We might have to call it something different now ’cause that’s just so attached to ‘The Motto,’ ‘ Drake tells MTV News of Rick Ross collabo. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News Lord knows when fans will get that tag-team mixtape from Drake and Rick Ross , but when it does come, the project — which was once dubbed Y.O.L.O. — might get a name change. “That title has become so … it’s like an epidemic. So I hope by the time we finish it, it would still hold weight and substance,” Drake told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway of the mixtape title, which stands for “You Only Live Once.” “We might have to call it something different now ’cause that’s just so attached to ‘The Motto.’ ” What was originally slated as an iTunes bonus song on Drizzy’s Take Care ended up one of the biggest singles from his sophomore project. “The Motto,” which also features Lil Wayne, peaked at #1 on Billboard ‘s Rap Songs chart, and thanks to its hook, popularized the phrase “Y.O.L.O.” or “You Only Live Once.” “Now she wants a photo/ You already know, though/ You only live once/ That’s the motto, n—a, Y.O.L.O.,” Drake spits on the track’s hook. Both Drizzy and Rozay have confirmed they’ve already recorded a number of tracks for the tape, but the project is not complete. Ross believes the tape would be so big that it could actually be a retail release rather than a free download online. “It’s official, the music is most definitely official,” Ross told “RapFix Live” during an appearance back in November. “But, me being a boss, I’m trying to find a way that we could put that on the shelves for the world, baby. But it’s most definitely official.” What’s your favorite Drake and Rick Ross collaboration? Share your pick in the comments! Related Videos Drake’s ‘Road To Paradise’ Related Artists Drake Rick Ross

‘Rock Of Ages’ Star Recalls ‘Jamming’ With Tom Cruise

‘It was pretty surreal jamming out with Tom singing ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn,’ ‘ Diego Boneta tells MTV News of their joint guitar lessons. By Amy Wilkinson Tom Cruise in “Rock of Ages” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures For his breakout role in the movie adaptation of the Broadway hit ” Rock of Ages ,” Diego Boneta could not have asked for a bigger — or better — co-star than Hollywood vet Tom Cruise . “He’s the hardest-working guy we’ve ever met in our lives,” Boneta said, speaking for himself and co-star Julianne Hough. “He’s so humble. I think that combination is something that really stuck with me. This is my first movie; this is Tom’s, like, 50th movie. That is a rare and very special combination.” In the film, Boneta plays aspiring musician Drew Boley, a barback at the Sunset Strip’s Bourbon Room, where Cruise’s rock god Stacee Jaxx is set to perform his band’s final show before embarking on a solo career. The role took months of preparation for the 21-year-old and his seasoned co-star, and despite their varied experience in the industry, both had to start at the beginning when it came to mastering the fundamentals of rock and roll. “Tom and I were taking guitar classes together because we both had to learn how to play guitar, and it was pretty surreal jamming out with Tom singing ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn,’ ” Boneta recalled. “He was playing the solo, and I was playing all the chords and stuff.” Though this is Boneta’s first film role, he may be familiar to TV audiences from appearances on teen favorites “90210” and “Pretty Little Liars.” Next up, the actor will star in the new MTV series “Underemployed.” “Rock of Ages,” which also stars Russell Brand, Malin Akerman and Catherine Zeta-Jones, hits theaters June 15. Lucy Hale on Fifty Shades of Grey Role: Yes, Please!

Lucy Hale stars on ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars , but she’s perfectly honest about coveting the lead role in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie . The pretty, little star is a big fan of the best-selling book and admits she can see herself as Anastasia Steele in the film, which has yet to be cast. “I just finished the first book. I’m speechless,” she said at the MTV Movie Awards. “I think every girl on the carpet wants to play [Anastasia Steele].” “That would be freaking awesome,” says the actress, who turns 23 next week. “I’m really curious to see how they’re going to turn it into a film.” As are we. Not only does it involve heavy does of risque sex (think bondage, S&M, all that good stuff), the dialogue is absolutely beyond terrible. As for a dream Fifty Shades of Grey co-star? He’s been talked about plenty for the part. “Someone sexy but approachable… Looks-wise, [Ian Somerhalder] is a good one.” Plenty of fans probably agree with her on that selection, and The Vampire Diaries star himself has expressed interest in the role when asked. What do you think? Can you see Lucy Hale as Anastasia? What about Ian Somerhalder as Christian?

Selena Gomez Takes On ‘Raw’ Role In ‘Spring Breakers’

‘It’s completely different than anything I’ve done before,’ she tells MTV News about the part in the flick. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner Selena Gomez Photo: MTV News Despite its sunny title, it seems that Selena Gomez ‘s next film is going to be anything but a joyful romp. With “Kids” director Harmony Korine at the directing wheel, “Spring Breakers” will take a turn for the dark and unwieldy. Which is fine for 19-year-old Gomez, whose film docket is quickly getting filled up with films that could make Disney execs blush. The flick follows a group of college girls (played by Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and “Pretty Little Liars” star Ashley Benson) who rob a restaurant to pay for their spring break. After landing in jail, they quickly become entangled with a drug and arms dealer who bails them out. James Franco stars in the film as the corn row-wearing bad guy. “It’s really fun. It’s completely different than anything I’ve done before,” she added. “People are going to be a little surprised, I think, by the choice. But it’s such a good movie. It’s real. It’s raw. It’s about actual spring break and it’s just, they kind of take it to a whole other level.” She gushed about the chance to work with Korine, who she said took her acting to a new level. “It’s great. The freedom we had, I mean Harmony, the director, was so flexible with us,” she explained. “He just really allowed us to push ourselves, which was nice. He never said we did anything wrong. He just said it was a choice. He gave us these locations and just said, ‘Act like you’re on spring break.’ ” In addition to “Spring Breakers,” Gomez is also attached to a thriller with Ethan Hawke, “The Getaway,” as well as Eli Roth’s next flick, “Aftershock.” Are you excited to see Selena Gomez in “Spring Breakers”?
