Jay-Z And Kanye West Drop ‘Otis’

On latest Watch the Throne track, duo trade bars over soul classic ‘Try a Little Tenderness.’ By Rob Markman Jay-Z and Kanye West Photo: Getty Images Otis is back, Otis is back! The King of Soul may have passed 40-plus years ago, but Jay-Z and Kanye West have resurrected Redding’s spirit on a new track off their highly anticipated Watch the Throne LP . On Wednesday (July 20), Hov and ‘Ye’s “Otis” premiered on New York City DJ Funkmaster Flex’s Hot 97 radio show , and then spread throughout the Internet. “Otis” opens with a slowed-down refrain lifted from Redding’s 1966 version of “Try a Little Tenderness.” The musical icon wails, “It makes it easier, easier to bare,” shortly before the piano sample is chopped and reworked. As the bass line is ushered in and the drums drop, Jay shouts out, “Sounds so soulful, wouldn’t you agree?” before tearing into his boastful bars. “I invented swag, poppin’ bottles, puttin’ supermodels in a cab,” Hov rhymes before going on about his super-exclusive watch collection. Only eight bars pass before Jay tosses the mic to West, who picks up where his Big Brother left off. “Damn, Yeezy and Hov, where the hell you been/ N—as talkin’ real reckless, stuntmen/ I adopted these n—as, Phillip Drummond ’em,” ‘Ye raps, turning the fictional father from the 1980s sitcom “Diff’rent Strokes” into an actual verb. Another eight bars pass and Jay once again takes over, looking like “wealth” and contemplating calling the paparazzi on himself — he’s that rich. But despite the pair’s status in rap and their platinum success, this is no pop affair. There is no deep introspection, no intricate instrumentation, just a dusty hip-hop loop and street-bred rhymes. At one point, Jigga even threatens to murder anyone who takes issue with Kanye. Perhaps West describes it best when he spits about his “sophisticated ignorance,” and that’s just what Hov exemplifies on his last verse as he seeks political asylum for his murderous rhymes in Cuba. “Welcome to Havana, smoking Cubanos with Castro in cabanas,” he raps before volleying back to the Louis Vuitton Don, who channels Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock’s 1998 hip-hop classic “Top Billin’ ” when he delivers, “Jay is chillin’, ‘Ye is chillin’/ What more can I say? We killin’ ’em.” The Watch the Throne rollout has kept fans confused. With an unconfirmed August 1 release date and no certifiable radio hit in sight, fans can only use “Otis” and the previously released “H.A.M.” to judge what they might expect from the LP. The latter wasn’t very well-received, but if the latest leak is any indication, Jay-Z and Kanye West won’t be relinquishing the rap throne any time soon. What do you think of Jay and Kanye’s “Otis”? Toya Carter Gets Her Cover Girl On For Rolling Out Magazine

Antonia “Toya” Carter is the latest celebrity to cover an issue of Rolling Out magazine and in it, speaks on motherhood and her new reality show. Toya’s show ‘Toya’s Family Affair’ debuted last week as BET’s highest rated returning series in history with 1.5 million viewers. And according to Toya , the program that goes in depth about her mother’s drug problem and her strained relationship with her previously incarcerated brother is both a gift and a curse. While she enjoys having people relate to her, she’s weary of people who feel like they really know her on a personal level. She tells Rolling Out, “It’s a gift and a curse, but a blessing. People feel like they really, really know you. So you get the weirdos who come up to you, ‘Oh, you looking for love? I can help you with that,’ and ‘Lil Wayne’s crazy’ and this and that. The plus side is you get to meet people who genuinely give you this love and open up to you … so it helps people.” Continue reading and peep more photos at HipHopWired.com

Lady Gaga’s ‘Judas’: Fans Weigh In!

Gaga’s Little Monsters declare the track ‘genius’ and ‘hardcore.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Lady Gaga gave her fans a treat for the weekend when she dropped her new single “Judas” days earlier than the previously announced April 19 release date. Right after the RedOne-produced song dropped, Gaga tweeted about the single, the second from Born This Way, due May 23. “Even After Three Times He Betrays Me,” she wrote, harking back to the song’s lyrics about love and betrayal. “THE REAL JUDAS: HE’S EVERYWHERE, NOW. DON’T STOP UNTIL HE’S YOURS,” she added. She also tweeted art for the song: In bright-red font, the word “Judas” appears in all caps, above a red cross with a heart in the middle. The art was teased in an installment of Gagavision earlier this week. Shortly after the song was released, fans immediately reacted to the genre-defying track that mixes dance, metal and even reggae. “I’ve listened to it at least 20 times already…can’t get enough….going 2 b another number one for sure! PAWS UP!” SHforlife commented on MTV News’ article about the song’s release. “This song is legit…beat is fn hardcore to the max…genius…” “I’ve listened to it just once so far. I know that just like ‘Born This Way,’ the more I listen to it, the more I like it!! Great song. I hope it still debuts pretty high atop the Hot 100 even though there was virtually no hype for this like there was for BTW!” Kyle noted. “It kinda just came out of no where! Could be a good thing though!” There have been some detractors, including critics who think “Judas” sounds too much like “Born This Way,” but the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Chifi55 called it “revolutionary, breathtaking… Gaga is changing music history and no one can stop her!!” Many of Gaga’s Little Monsters have simply dubbed the song “amazing” and “awesome,” while many have been able to articulate what it is about the song they love so much. “JUDAS!!!!!!!…..Lady Gaga the cultural baptist!!!!!!!!!!!” Rohit Little commented. “I’m in love with JESUS for making GAGA for making JUDAS for giving me eargasms!!!!” What do you think of “Judas”?
