After all the blackface backlash , Gucci is getting groaned again — this time for selling $790 turbans that are similar in style to the dastaar (turban) worn by members of the Sikh faith. According to Washington Post , the brand originally drew ire from the Sikh community when the luxury designer had a white model walking the runway in a bright blue turban last year: It was styled nearly identically to the traditional headwear of Sikhs, who follow a faith with roots in South Asia, and outrage abounded. The Italian luxury brand was widely panned for not showing the look on “a brown model” and failing to grasp the turban’s significance. “As a Sikh, I see this as a huge sign of disrespect and disregard toward Sikhism,” one person tweeted at the time. Apparently that wasn’t enough to halt production because this week Gucci’s “Indy Full Turban” — described as a “gorgeously crafted turban” that is “ready to turn heads while keeping you in comfort as well as trademark style” — was being sold by Nordstrom for a reported price of $790. As of Wednesday evening, the item was listed as sold out on Nordstrom’s website and the price no longer appeared. The department store and Gucci did not respond to requests for comment from the Washington Post. Meanwhile there’s been a (well deserved, in our opinion) outcry from Sikhs and other critics over misappropriating an article of clothing that has religious significance and whose wearers have been attacked, discriminated against and even killed. It wrote: “Many find this cultural appropriation inappropriate, since those wearing the turban just for fashion will not appreciate its deep religious significance.” There’s much more to unpack with this particular item of clothing. HelloBeautiful: Can you tell me a bit about your character and what we can expect from the show? Emayatzy Corinealdi: My character on The Red Line is Tia Young. You’ll see in the show, as it goes on, you find out that she is connected to the main story of the show, which is about how the tragic shooting of this unarmed Black man by this White cop sucks the life out of these three different families. And my kid is apart of one of those families. Once everything happens, she realizes as a citizen of Chicago and as a mother, that she has to do something. So she decides to run for public office and in doing so, there are a lot of things in her past that come to the forefront that she didn’t see coming her way. But she’s a woman who decides, sometimes it only takes one person. And her way of doing that is to run for office. Whether or not she is successful, we’ll have to see on the show. HB: Your character is a hopeful politician, Black women walk through the world everyday making a political statement… Emayatzy Corinealdi: We are. It’s one of those things where when most of know we have to be better, we have to fight harder for the same opportunities. When doing so it just makes you hyper aware of that. In the society we’re in, it’s disproportionate. We have a justice system. We have a medical system, a legal system on the system. They’re not in our favor, you know, more likely than not it’s going to go the other way. As black women, we have to stand up and make change as much as we can. Years ago it wouldn’t have even been discussed. The lines have become more blurred with the rise of streaming. According to New York Post , a longtime fencing coach for Harvard University is being investigated for allegedly recruiting a high school student whose dad bought the coach’s house for far more than it was worth. The real estate deal went down in May 2016 when coach Peter Brand sold his three-bedroom Colonial-style house in suburban Massachusetts. He sold it to Jie “Jack” Zhao for $989,500. However, its assessed value was only $549,300, according to the Boston Globe . Zhao’s younger son was later accepted to Harvard and joined the fencing team. Meanwhile, Zhao, who made loads of money in the telecom industry, sold the house he bought after 17 months. Get this…he only sold it for $665,000, according to the Globe. The $324,500 loss was nearly one-third of what he had paid for the house. The bribery aromas are thick. Needham Director of Assessing Chip Davis said that Zhao’s purchase of the house was so out of line with its assessed value that the property was itching for an inspection. He described the house as being “in bad shape” and wrote in his notes that its nearly $1 million sale price “makes no sense.” Harvard said they were conducting an “independent review” of the Globe ‘s findings, with spokesperson Rachael Dane saying, “We are committed to ensuring the integrity of our recruitment practices.” In the most public college admissions bribery case where 33 wealthy parents were prosecuted, including Felicity Huffman and Lor Loughlin, Harvard was not implicated in the case. Although, a soccer coach at another ivy league school, Yale University, recently pleaded guilty to bribery charges and is cooperating with the feds. Zhao, whose older son graduated from Harvard last year and was also on the fencing team, denies any bribery schemes to get his younger son into Harvard. “I want to help Peter Brand because I feel so sorry he has to travel so much to go to fencing practice,” he told the Globe, which said Harvard is around a 12-mile drive from the house in Needham. According to a CBSNews report, the unnecessarily big Connecticut mega mansion that Curtis Jackson bought from Mike Tyson years ago has FINALLY been sold…for FAR under the initial asking price. 50 bought the home from the former boxing champ in 2003 for $4.1 million and has since poured MILLIONS of dollars into it for renovations. In 2007, the rapper looked to sell the crib for $18.7 million but there were no takers. Recently, the price had dropped to a desperately low $4.95 million, but today we get word that the final sale price was even worse. 50 agreed to sell the home for just $2.9 million, $1.2 million less than what he paid, and not even half of what he put into the home. NYDailyNews estimates that he spent somewhere between $6 million and $10 million to make the place sellable. With a 21 bedrooms and 35 bathrooms, as well as a movie theater, gym, indoor pool and basketball court, that $2.9 million price tag might as well be free. 50’s now-former crib appeared on an episode of Million-Dollar Listing last year and he vowed to pull the property off the market for other uses: “It would be interesting to have programs where we could escape the cities and kids from the inner cities to go out and just be creative, to kind of hone in, you know, on the arts and stuff like that,” 50 Cent said in the episode. “They’ll be able to use the recording studio and the fitness areas, the pools, everything. It’ll be a cool summer camp house.” He took quarter water and sold it in bottles for two bucks, Coca-Cola came and bought it for billions. 50 will be fine, he just has to take this L.
