30 Rock star Alec Baldwin has long mused about running for political office, but some of his recent Tweets have stoked more speculation than ever. Earlier this week, Baldwin wrote that it’s still “a long way till November of 2013” and then posted a link to the iconic song “New York, New York.” Interestingly, Baldwin just wrote an essay for The Huffington Post that was sympathetic to the plight of embattled U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner. Weiner represents Brooklyn and Queens in the U.S. House, but has openly coveted the NYC mayoral post and was all but certain to run in 2013. His rampant crotch-shot texting likely slammed the door on that lifelong political aspiration – but did it open one for Alec Baldwin in the process? It certainly could happen. The actor owns an apartment on Central Park West, though his primary residence is in the Hamptons on Long Island. He has flirted with running for Congress from his Suffolk County district, but this is the first time his name has been tied to the mayor’s office. Gender inequalities have fueled several debates in history, from women having the right to vote to women in the workplace. While researching gender inequalities in different countries, I came across the controversial practice of female circumcision in Africa. This painful practice is perpetuated in Africa because of male domination embedded in the social and cultural structures. Female circumcision is the process of cutting female genitals, specifically the clitoris. There are several different types of female circumcision, which we will let you look up on your own- the details can be gruesome. This procedure is often disguised as a celebration to young girls that are about to have it done. To her surprise, she is having an invasive operation instead. This procedure, practiced in over 25 African countries, is a clear violation of girls’ rights to their own bodies. Not only is the process itself extremely dangerous, but there is proof that girls are more vulnerable to infections and complications during childbirth after. So why would anyone enforce the practice of female circumcision? The traditionally male dominated African culture uses this procedure to justify what they consider to be a pure marriage. They feel that female circumcision ensures that a woman is a virgin, a requirement to get married. It is believed that without a clitoris, you are less likely to engage in sexual behavior before marriage. You have to wonder, where does male virginity come into play? Male circumcision is a much less invasive procedure that does not affect their sexual enjoyment. Men are not forced to undergo this painful operation to prove themselves, so why do women? In addition, cultural beliefs about female sexuality add to the persistence of female circumcision. There are widespread views that when females are not circumcised, their husbands and potential children are in danger. These unjustifiable worries force women to undergo a painful and dangerous procedure. The practice of female circumcision perpetuates the idea that males and females have different rights when it comes to sexuality and marriage. Women are forced to undergo this invasive procedure for no reason other than contrived cultural beliefs. ‘Catchy’ first single off upcoming Codes and Keys album almost didn’t make the cut, fontman Ben Gibbard tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard Photo: MTV News You might think, given the live live video used to promote it (and all the preparation that went into pulling said video off), that Death Cab for Cutie had known for a very long time that “You Are a Tourist” would be the first single off their upcoming Codes and Keys album. But you’d be wrong. “This song … actually came in late during the recording process,” DCFC bassist Nick Harmer told MTV News. “I mean, we had a group of songs in the beginning that we were working on, and you never really know what your album’s going to be at the start of a process, but we knew what songs we were going to start working on. Then [Ben] brought [‘Tourist’] in later on in the process, and the fact that it went from being a song that we hadn’t gone into the process knowing about … to suddenly becoming a song that we immediately reacted to, that as soon as we recorded it, we just knew it was going to be the first song to release from this album. … That was a fun development for us.” So from late addition to first single out of the gate, “Tourist” has certainly had an interesting life already. But that’s just part of what makes the song unique. Because, to hear frontman Ben Gibbard tell it, the song is also different from most in the DCFC catalog because it is, at its very core, just a very shiny pop tune. “It’s weird, there’s not really a narrative in the song. … I feel like the lyrics and the verses are kind of more, just, affirmations than anything else; they’re not really deep thoughts,” Gibbard said. “But I feel that there’s a kind of particular narrative within the bridge that kind of ties everything together, and balances out the affirmations in the verse. And that’s the thing I’m most fond of in the song, is that, you know, the verses are catchy and light — it’s a pop song — but at the same time, there’s a weight to it, that you kind of get in the bridge that kind of ties it all together.” What do you think of DCFC’s “You Are a Tourist”? MTV News correspondent Sway recently sat down with the “Teenage Dream” singer to chat about the extensive makeup process involved in the clip. “It was, like, five and six hours, each makeup look,” Perry said, admitting that it was a challenge for her to remain patient during the process. “It was hard for me! It was really a patience thing for me on this video,” she said. “But, you know, it’s like when you’re doing a film. Sometimes you have to do prosthetics, and you have to get really old or turn into an animal or a monster — and that’s kind of what this process was.” And after the five- to six-hour application process, how long did it take Perry to get out of her getup? “Like, 10 minutes,” she said, laughing.
