Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video Premieres Thursday On MTV

The 90-second clip will air at 11 p.m., after ‘Jersey Shore.’ By Shaheem Reid Kanye West Photo: MTV News It’s not a video, it’s a work of art. But MTV will be the gallery when Kanye West’s much-anticipated clip for “Power” debuts Thursday night at 11 p.m. ET/PT right after “Jersey Shore.” The Louis Vuitton Don and director Marco Brambilla have been adamant in avoiding the “music video” label since their collaboration was announced. “The ‘Portrait of Power’ premieres this Thursday on MTV right after Jersey Shore…it’s not a video… it’s a painting!” West tweeted Wednesday morning (August 4). Unlike the standard music video, West’s “Power” runs only 90 seconds. Speaking to The New York Times last week, Brambilla described the look of the video as “kind of apocalyptic.” “It had this very dark, personal conflict within it,” Brambilla said. “Because of his own concept of celebrity and his own notoriety, he’s keenly self-aware of all these things. And it all came out in the music.” Since “Power” leaked to the Net in May, the record has been lauded by fans as well as journalists . The song’s release was just part of West’s return from his brief musical hiatus. He produced two tracks (“Find Your Love” and “Show Me a Good Time”) for Drake’s Thank Me Later, and he appears on and produced “Live Fast, Die Young” on Rick Ross’ Teflon Don. Kanye has also produced and appears on albums by his G.O.O.D. Music roster of talent, Consequence, Big Sean and Kid Cudi, all due out on September 14. Thursday is a big night for video premieres, with Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie” clip also debuting on MTV that night, at 9 p.m. before “Jersey Shore.” Are you excited for Kanye’s new video? Lil Wayne Debuts New Single, ‘Right Above It,’ Featuring Drake

First track from I’m Not a Human Being EP aired on New York radio on Tuesday. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: C. Flanigan/ Getty Images Lil Wayne dominated New York’s hip-hop radio stations on Tuesday night, when the Cash Money Records superstar conducted an interview on Hot 97, and almost simultaneously, his new single, “Right Above It,” featuring Drake, premiered on Power 105. The song is the first effort from Lil Wayne’s forthcoming EP, I’m Not a Human Being, slated for release on September 27 (Lil Wayne’s birthday). During his Hot 97 interview with Funkmaster Flex, Wayne said he recorded the music for his upcoming EP before turning himself in to serve a yearlong prison sentence. “Yes, it’s gonna drop before Carter IV, only on the Internet,” Wayne said over the phone. “This is stuff that I recorded right before I came here.” “Meet me on the fresh train,” Wayne raps over the synth-laden production. “Yes, I’m in the building, you just on the list of guest names/ And all of my riders don’t give a f—, X-games/ Guns turn you boys into … sex change.” Wayne later chants on the chorus: “Now tell me how you love it/ And know you at the top and only heaven’s right above it.” Earlier this year, Drake told MTV2’s “Sucker Free” host DJ Envy that he and Lil Wayne are planning on recording a joint project once Wayne finishes his sentence. “I went up to Rikers, and me and Wayne agreed that there will be a Lil Wayne/ Drake album,” Drake explained. “There’s some things I’m excited for in my life — I’m excited to go perform certain places — but [this project] will probably be one of the most exciting things in my life, because we make music on a different level. It’s just so fun, so comfortable. A whole album? To think about all the things we can do, especially if we’re gonna do 15 songs. Me and him don’t like to do 12, 13 [songs]. We want to do 15, 16. Yeah, Lil Wayne and Drake album.” What do you think about Lil Wayne’s “Right Above It,” featuring Drake? Let us know in the comments or tweet us @MTVRapFix . Related Artists Lil Wayne

Nicolas Cage Decides to Make Trespass After All, Probably

Nicolas Cage just can’t make his mind up about the new Joel Schumacher thriller Trespass . Originally set to star with Nicole Kidman as a husband and wife who turn the tables on their kidnappers, Cage then decided he’d rather play the lead kidnapper before ditching the project entirely as of yesterday. Now, like a wayward Amish youth with a Rumspringa hangover, Cage has returned to the film in his original role. We give it a week before he switches parts with Nicole Kidman. [ Deadline ]

Drake, Bun B, Talib Kweli Co-Sign ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC Of 2010’ Finalist J. Cole

‘J. Cole’s really trying to draw people into his world,’ Drizzy says of the Fayetteville, North Carolina, MC. ‘I respect that a lot.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Drake Photo: MTV News & Docs When J. Cole made his New York City debut at S.O.B.’s in March , the North Carolina MC was greeted not only with a warm response from a sell-out crowd, he received an endorsement from one of the most respected lyricists in the game. After Talib Kweli joined the rising rapper onstage for a rendition of the hit “Get By” — Cole revamps Kweli’s song on his acclaimed ’09 mixtape The Warm Up — the Brooklyn MC dubbed the young star “the future of hip-hop.” That’s just an example of the type of love the Fayetteville rapper and top-five finalist for the title of “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” has been getting from hip-hop’s best and brightest. After turning heads with The Come Up tape, Cole became the first artist to sign to the Jay-Z-helmed Roc Nation, jumping on a track from Hov’s The Blueprint 3, a landmark feat for a rookie MC. Another hip-hop O.G. who’s been impressed by Cole is Bun B, who said he’s anticipating the upstart lyricist’s first LP. “I’m really curious to see what his debut is gonna sound like because he’s making some real strong music right now,” Bun B recently told MTV News. “[His single] ‘Who Dat’ is really killing it and the boy can write.” Although the rapper has yet to drop a major-label album, Bun observed that the MC already has intense fan support on his side. “If you go to a J.Cole show … he’s got a real strong connection. The J. Cole shows are sold-out, everybody in there singing all the lyrics to every song,” Bun said. “When you got that, you good.” In addition to getting respect from hip-hop’s elder statesmen, Cole is inspiring his peers as well. Fellow breakout MC Drake said he’s feeling the Southern lyricist’s thoughtful flow. “I really, really, really like J. Cole. His rhyme structures, the concepts, there’s a little bit of pain in his raps. It’s music, man. It’s deep music,” Drake told MTV News. The Toronto MC added that he can relate to the way Cole strives to create inventive hip-hop. “It’s a kid who is trying to draw you into his world and I think that’s what it takes in rap right now. You can’t just be the generic, [like,] ‘Oh, I rap great,’ but have nothing to say. J. Cole’s really trying to draw people into his world and I respect that a lot because that’s my goal, period.” MTV News will be rolling out the top-five candidates for “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” all week — with the winner being revealed on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Summit” on Sunday at noon! Katy Perry Wears Only Cotton Candy On Teenage Dream Cover

‘It even smells like cotton candy!’ she reveals during a live chat with fans. By James Dinh Teenage Dream Photo: Capitol Records If the video for Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” left you wanting more, then wait until you see the cover for her new album Teenage Dream. During a Ustream live chat Wednesday (July 21), the singer unveiled the cover of the project: a Will Cotton painting of Perry lying nude on a cotton-candy cloud. She also spoke about touring and her next video and even revealed that the album artwork will have the sweet scent of cotton candy. Perry, who was joined by Cotton for the chat, unveiled the cover — which she had not even seen yet herself. “Oh my God, what will my mother think?” she exclaimed about the painting, which took six and a half weeks to create. “It’s so gorgeous. I’m so excited. I’m nervous. I’m shaking a bit. This will be my first piece of real art. “I have decided for this to be just the album cover — no print, no nothing, no ‘Katy Perry,’ ” she added. “Hopefully they know it’s me by the actual picture.” What makes Perry’s cover even more fun is that the album booklet will have a cotton-candy scent. “When you purchase the CD physically, you just get a Katy Perry by Will Cotton. We went through every detail — it even smells like cotton candy!” she said. “It actually stinks.” And if fans enjoy the recent Perry and Cotton collaboration, then they’ll be pleased to know that the two are likely collaborating on the singer’s upcoming tour, which will begin next spring. “Of course, I’m going to be touring the balls off the album. I’ll be doing a lot of shows this fall and the wintertime.” Fans have even more to look forward on Friday, when the 12-song track list for Teenage Dream will be revealed. The pop star mentioned that some of her favorite tracks on the LP include “Firework” and “Peacock,” which she says is “a great representation of my f—ed-up humor.” Perry also took some time to speak about the video for her next single, “Teenage Dream,” which she predicted will be released in the first week of August. “It’s going to be beautiful and will be so different than the Candyfornia video, which is fantastic, but I love going from one extreme to the other,” she told fans. Last month, the video director for “California Gurls” spoke to MTV News about his vision for the clip. “The lyrics were so literal, that when I pitched it, I said, ‘Look, I want to so something that’s a metaphor for what the song’s about,’ and I guess it was something different from what the other directors were pitching her,” Mathew Cullen told MTV News. CNN’s Feyerick Plays Hardball With Ground Zero Mosque Developer

On Wednesday’s Newsroom, CNN correspondent Deborah Feyerick refreshingly asked the developer behind the planned mosque near Ground Zero many hard questions. Feyerick bluntly asked Sharif el-Gamel, “Why not have a prayer space for Buddhists or Jews or Christians… why must it be Muslim? ” The correspondent even brought up how one of the landing gear of one of the planes ended up on the site of the planned mosque . Feyrick conducted her hardball interview of el-Gamel at his New York City office. The CNN correspondent almost immediately launched into her prayer space question. When the real estate developer initially replied, “There are Jewish community centers all over the country,” Feyerick interrupted with a sharp retort: ” But the Jews didn’t take down two towers .” El-Gamel continued that “there are YMCA’s all over the country,” but she gave a similar reply: ” But the Christians didn’t take down two towers .” The journalist followed up with the issue of the planned mosque’s proximity to the Ground Zero and mentioned the plane wreckage that ended up on the site: ” For those who are so- still sensitive and so raw to this, their question- their overriding question is, why here? Why so close? It’s two blocks, but it was close enough that landing gear ended up on the roof. Why? ” Later in the segment, Feyerick mentioned the recent confrontational zoning meeting where supporters and opponents of the mosque faced off and quoted from one of the opponents who used a historical parallel: ” Coming out of that hearing, somebody said, ‘The Japanese would never have dared to build on Pearl Harbor.’ What makes this different? ” Towards the end of the segment, the CNN correspondent asked el-Gamel if he planned to make sure Islamic extremism stays out of the “Islamic community center” and if they would reject funding from Islamist sources: “Can you guarantee that this center will r oot out extremism or completely reject any extremists that try to get into it?…Will you reject any money that comes…from any person, any country, any organization… that has any links to terrorism ? Will you be doing due diligence ?” In her final question, Feyerick asked the developer to directly address a key claim by the opponents of the mosque: ” For those who would say, this is not an olive branch to greater understanding, this is more an act of defiance- how would you answer those people? ” The full transcript of correspondent Deborah Feyerich’s interview of Sharif el-Gamel, which aired 47 minutes into the 12 pm Eastern hour of Wednesday’s Newsroom program: FREDERICKA WHITFIELD: Some say plans to build an Islamic center and mosque near 9/11’s Ground Zero disrespects the victims of the attacks. Others say that attitude is bigoted and intolerant. CNN’s Deborah Feyerick spoke with the developer of the project to get his thoughts. DEBORAH FEYERICK: This is where you sort of conceived of the idea? SHARIF EL-GAMEL, SOHO PROPERTIES: Yes, it is. FEYERICK (voice-over): Meet New York real estate developer Sharif el-Gamel, the man at the center of a controversial plan a stone’s throw from the World Trade Center site. EL-GAMEL: This is an Muslim-led project. This is an Islamic community center that will cater to all of New York. There’s gym and basketball courts. FEYERICK: Plans include a performing arts center, swimming pool, child care facilities, and yes, a Muslim prayer space two blocks from the worst terror attack in U.S. history. FEYERICK (on-camera): Why not have a prayer space for Buddhists or Jews or Christians or- why must it be Muslim? It can’t just be a business decision. EL-GAMEL: There are Jewish community centers all over the country. There are Y- FEYERICK: But the Jews didn’t take down two towers. EL-GAMEL: There are YMCA’s all over the country- FEYERICK: But the Christians didn’t take down two towers. EL-GAMEL: And this is- and this is a need that exists. FEYERICK: For those who are so- still sensitive and so raw to this, their question- their overriding question is, why here? Why so close? It’s two blocks, but it was close enough that landing gear ended up on the roof. Why? EL-GAMEL: There is a need. It’s supply and demand. The community wants it. The politicians are supporting it. FEYERICK (voice-over): Maybe, but many who attended a town hall meeting recently were dead set against it. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Have we forgotten what happened at 9/11? EL-GAMEL: What happened that day is not Islam. What happened that day is terrorism. FEYERICK (on-camera): Coming out of that hearing, somebody said, ‘The Japanese would never have dared to build on Pearl Harbor.’ What makes this different? EL-GAMEL: If you were at that hearing the way that I was at that hearing, you come out understanding that there is a great need for dialogue now. FEYERICK (voice-over): El-Gamel says many people don’t understand Islam. But does that make it Islamophobia? EL-GAMEL: One hundred percent. FEYERICK (on-camera): Why? EL-GAMEL: Because the moderate voice of Islam is not coming out. FEYERICK: Can you guarantee that this center will root out extremism or completely reject any extremists that try to get into it? EL-GAMEL: One hundred percent- we will not tolerate extremism. We will not tolerate extremism. FEYERICK (voice-over): And yet, critics say the religious leader, Iman Faisal Abdul Rauf, has links to groups that support terror. EL-GAMEL: Imam Faisal is one of the most moderate Muslims that exists in this country today. FEYERICK (on-camera): Will you reject any money that comes, either directly or indirectly, from any person, any country, any organization, any corporation, that has any links to terrorism? Will you be doing due diligence? EL-GAMEL: We are going to be doing extreme due diligence, and we are going to hire the best security experts in the country to help us walk through the process, and we plan on being very transparent throughout the whole process. FEYERICK: For those who would say, this is not an olive branch to greater understanding, this is more an act of defiance- how would you answer those people? EL-GAMEL: This is an olive branch. FEYERICK: El-Gamel points out there are more than a million Muslims in the tri-state area, and that the American Muslim consumer spends nearly $200 billion a year. So, when he talks about this center as a business, it certainly is that. He also says he wants his two young daughters to have a place where they can feel a sense of cultural and religious pride and belonging- where everyone can learn and share in the mainstream Muslim experience. Deborah Feyerick, CNN, New York.

N.E.R.D. Say Nothing Album Is ‘Intended To Inspire Humans’

‘If you can find something positive in here that motivates you, then this album is for you,’ Pharrell tells MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Steven Roberts N.E.R.D’s Pharrell Williams Photo: MTV News N.E.R.D. have said that their upcoming album, Nothing, will be a “psychedelic” romp through the throwback counterculture vibes of yesteryear inspired by, among other things, women. However, the band recently made it clear that while the release caters to the ladies, all fans are welcome to the party. “Women are essential to life on this planet,” frontman Pharrell told MTV News when the group stopped by the newsroom Monday. “They just hold a very sacred place, they always have for me. My taste and appetite for women has been clearly evident in my music and my videos. We just felt like that was the sweetest spot for us to concentrate on. Having that in mind, just because the concept of the album is us having a conversation with women at a roundtable, it doesn’t mean that that’s what the audience is about.” The producer and rapper likened the project to a chick flick geared toward a certain type of woman but ropes in other fans as well. “The audience for [the album] is just like any other film,” Pharrell said. “Like a Sandra Bullock film. The concept may be geared toward a chick-based theme, but of course those audiences are not 100 percent women. There’s just all kinds of human beings who just wanna be entertained by that particular story. That’s the concept here. This album is meant and intended to inspire humans. Man, woman, whatever you are. If you can find something positive in here that motivates you, then this album is for you.” Chad Hugo chimed in as well, joking that fans can enjoy Nothing “even if you’re not human” and adding that the album’s appeal extends to “cats and dogs” too. The fellas revealed that they pushed back the album but also gave up a few details about their new single. While they didn’t reveal the title, they did hint that the track will feature a special guest and that “it’s like the ultimate party song.” Shay Haley said the track is inspired by a hard-partying night in Europe. “We were in Monaco, and we were looking around, and we were just seeing how people were having a great time and you couldn’t tell them sh–. It was like 5 in the morning, and you would have thought it was like 1,” Shay said. “People were partying just as hard, so we were like, ‘Whoa.’ ” Who do you think might make an appearance on N.E.R.D.’s next single? J. Cole Is A Top-Five Finalist For ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC Of 2010’!

Winner will be revealed on MTV2’s ‘Sucker Free Summit’ Sunday at noon. By Shaheem Reid J. Cole Photo: Roc Nation It is here: As promised, the top-five vote-getters in our poll for “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” will be revealed this week. These are the artists you guys voted for over the past month, and we can’t express enough how overwhelmed we were by your participation in this project. More than 200,000 votes came in, and they were tallied as of midnight Friday. Keep in mind, the unveiling of the names this week are the top five, but in no particular order. The winner of the “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010,” as voted on by the MTV News audience, will be revealed Sunday (July 25) at noon on the “Sucker Free Summit.” Chosen One: J. Cole Rising in the Ranks : Jermaine Cole was focused, then lost it, and now his vision is as lucid as ever. The 25-year-old rapper was no ordinary jock in high school, back in his hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Just like fans applaud him when he performs concerts, J. was highly acclaimed by his high school teachers for his academia. Pretty soon, the students began to love him as well. He cut his teeth in freestyle ciphers at football games. Rather than accepting a scholarship locally, he wanted to kill two birds with one stone: go to the media mecca of New York City to pursue music while gaining higher education at the esteemed St. John’s University. But the allure of the bright lights and all the other trappings of the big city put J. in a chokehold. His first two years in school, he partied and chased girls, but he finally snapped out of his haze his junior year, graduating magna cum laude. Cole gained the following he has now by showing off his ever-evolving lyricism with the mixtapes The Come Up and The Warm Up. In between those projects, Cole signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. Like Kanye West, Cole was first introduced to Jay as a producer, but Hov quickly discovered J.’s blue-chip verbal acumen. Cole got the ultimate co-sign, appearing on Jigga’s “A Star Is Born” from Blueprint 3 last year. Now with “Who Dat” rising as the first look from his still-untitled debut LP, the fans are looking at Cole as one to crack the mainstream hard any minute. Early Insight : “Anything I do, whether it’s a freestyle I drop or [a song], man, I feel like I got a lot to prove — not just to people, but to myself,” Cole said. “I’ve been wanting this a long time. I didn’t want to just get a deal. I didn’t want to just put out an album. I want to be here for a long time. I’ve got big goals and big dreams, even beyond where I’m at right now.” Blistering Ballistics : “The mind state of a winner/ When you thinkin’ bout summertime/ I’m thinkin’ ’bout the winter/ When you thinkin’ ’bout breakfast/ I’m heatin’ up my dinner/ I was plottin’ this moment back when y’all was ridin’ spinners/ Now I’m a menace/ God as my witness, with this pen I’m insane, yup/ Hungry like the n—a who ain’t got the taste of fame yet/ Cloud told me, ‘Ain’t you Roc? Well, where the f— yo chain at?’ ” — from Cole’s “Who Dat” Forecast : Cole hasn’t hit the home run smash out of the park yet, but he’s laying the all-too-essential groundwork to establish himself as not just at the top of his weight class as far as lyricism goes, but his live shows have displayed his potential to be one of the great performers in the coming years. Win, lose or draw with his album, Cole is banking on himself. He says there will be no features on his debut, because he has too much to say. MTV News will be rolling out the top-five candidates for “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” all week — with the winner being revealed on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Summit” on Sunday at noon!
