Royce Da 5’9" Talks Possible Slaughterhouse, Solo Deals With Eminem

‘Just because the paperwork ain’t done don’t mean we ain’t been working,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Royce Da 5’9″ Photo: Djamilla Rosa Cochran/ WireImage The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Hope everyone enjoyed their Fourth of July holiday! We’re fresh from New Orleans and the Essence Music Fest. N.O., thank you again for always showing love. Make sure you read up on our adventures out there elsewhere on the website. On to the business at hand: Mixtape Daily ‘s periodic check-in on the Slaughterhouse/ Shady Records deal . The group (Royce Da 5’9″, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz and Crooked I) still isn’t officially signed as of yet, but we asked Royce whether he would ink with Shady as a solo artist if his team is onboard. After all, Royce has been traveling with Marshall, and the two have a long history. “We haven’t talked about that,” Royce said of a solo deal with Shady. “Right now, we just chillin’. We’re getting back acclimated, being around each other, getting the creative juices flowing. Making sure we’re on the same page creatively. We’re just gonna focus on the Slaughterhouse album right now. “Man, I haven’t thought about it,” Royce reiterated about his solo deal. “After I put this next album out, I’m a free agent. So I’m sure it’s a possibility. But it’s not something we’re really thinking about right now. I’m gonna totally focus on the group, because I think [this] sh– could be something special.” Royce said he’s hoping Slaughterhouse can drop a project this year and he can come with a solo opus sometime in 2011. “Depending on when this deal closes, which should be very soon, I think I’m gonna put my focus on the group,” he said. “I got a lot of material done for my solo album, but I wanna take my time with it. I’m looking at next year for my album. I’ve been doing sh– sporadically. I wanna put all my focus into the Slaughterhouse album first. I would like for my album to catapult off the next Slaughterhouse album. We’re gonna cancel everything. We did the last [Slaughterhouse] album so fast, because we was behind the eight ball, time-wise. It ain’t gonna be no timeline on this album. We going in, and we gonna keep recording until it’s right.” Meanwhile, as Slaughterhouse continue to work on separate projects (Royce just released the mixtape Bar Exam 3 and Ortiz has his Yaowa tape dropping in the next few weeks), the Nine Nickel said Em is making sure they stay active as a collective while they wait on the label paperwork. “Em gave me all types of tracks. Dre beats,” Royce said. “Just because the paperwork ain’t done don’t mean we ain’t been working. We definitely been throwing ideas around. [Em] stressed he wants to have a lot of involvement in the project. We want him to be as involved as he wants to be. Anytime he runs an idea by me, I respect him so much, I’m down with it. If he gives me a beat, like, ‘Yo, y’all would sound ill on this,’ I’m going to record it. That’s pretty much what we been doing. He hasn’t did no beats and gave me nothing yet, but he has given me a lot of beats from other producers.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .

Adam Sandler, Chris Rock Talk Richard Pryor Biopic

‘It’s all being worked on,’ Sandler tells MTV News, after losing director Bill Condon to ‘Breaking Dawn.’ By Eric Ditzian Chris Rock and Adam Sandler Photo: MTV News Richard Pryor died in 2005 at the age of 65, leaving behind a legacy of legendary comedy — and equally legendary debauchery. He was the guy a generation of stand-up comedians modeled themselves after, and he was the guy whose long-standing drug abuse — including a frightening incident in which he lit himself on fire while freebasing cocaine — stood as a warning to rising comics about the dangers of addiction and fame. Two of the comedians who rose to prominence in the decades after Pryor’s trailblazing comedic stylings, Adam Sandler and Chris Rock , are deep in development as the producers of “Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said?” a biopic about the funnyman. Eddie Murphy circled the Pryor role at one point, and before his death, Pryor himself anointed Mike Epps (“The Hangover”) as the guy for the part. But the gig eventually went to Marlon Wayans. Why? Rock had some answers. “Marlon Wayans, he did a screen test and it was just unbelievable,” Rock told MTV News recently. “It’s not just doing the comedy of Richard Pryor. He captures the vulnerability of Richard Pryor.” Long attached to helm the project, director Bill Condon should begin shooting “Is It Something I Said?” in the fall. But now that Condon has signed on to direct the conclusion of the two-part “Twilight Saga,” “Breaking Dawn” — also this fall — things seem to be getting complicated. Is Condon still on board? Will Sandler and Rock get their project off the ground? “Hopefully, soon,” Sandler said. “It’s all being worked on. Hopefully soon.” What do you think of Marlon Wayans playing iconic comedian Richard Pryor? Would you have cast another actor? Let us know in the comments!

‘The Last Airbender’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

A fan-friendly primer on how the hugely popular cartoon made it to the big screen. By Kara Warner “The Last Airbender” Photo: Paramount Pictures Based on Nickelodeon’s hit animated series, “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” many thought the film adaptation would never happen. The story revolves around Aang, the last living member of an air-manipulating nomadic tribe, also on his quest to unite the other elemental tribes against the tyranny of the Fire nation. In January 2007, “Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable” director M. Night Shyamalan was tapped to write, direct and produce the live-action version of the series. Shortly thereafter, MTV News caught up with Shyamalan to find out what inspired him to sign on to the project. He cited the animated series’ “cool fighting scenes” and its supernatural elements. With all systems go and excitement building toward the film’s inevitable casting announcement, when the news finally arrived in late 2008, it created a stir of controversy alleging racist casting choices — mainly for the four main roles of Aang, played by newcomer and taekwondo black belt Noah Ringer; Nicola Peltz as Katara; “Twilight” actor Jackson Rathbone as Sokka; and pop singer Jesse McCartney as Prince Zuko. McCartney eventually had to drop out of filming due to scheduling conflicts and was soon replaced with “Slumdog Millionaire” star Dev Patel . Shyamalan later responded to the criticism in a lengthy interview with Indie Movies Online : “I’m always surprised at the level of misunderstanding, the sensitivities that exist. As an Asian-American, it bothers me when people take all of their passion and rightful indignation about the subject and then misplace it.” Controversy aside, filming was well under way in May 2009, when we got our first look at Dev Patel as the evil and angsty Prince Zuko and newbie Noah Ringer as Aang. The following month, MTV News was invited to visit the Philadelphia set (the largest ever assembled on the East Coast) for an inside look at the production, where we wandered the fantastical lands of the Northern Water Tribe, stood on Commander Zhao’s battleship and chatted with Shyamalan and his castmembers. Patel told us he felt like he’d “been thrown into the deep end. … It’s a real stretch for me. At the start going into it, I was a bit naive, and I thought, ‘This is just going to be a big laugh. I’m playing a cartoon character.’ Then I got on set with everyone and read the script, and M. Night’s in front of me, and there’s a lot of soul-searching to be done.” The first teaser trailer arrived just after our set visit and nearly a year ahead of the film’s release. The footage offered fans a glimpse of Aang in action, practicing his airbending in a circular room surrounded by candlelight. All was quiet on the “Airbender” front until January of this year, when Paramount released two teaser posters , one of Aang and the other of Prince Zuko. The following month, we got a sneak preview of the “Last Airbender” toy line , which was followed closely by a second trailer that aired during the Super Bowl . When our MTV Movie Awards rolled around last month, the trailers started to reveal more detailed action, and we got our hands on and analyzed an exclusive clip that premiered during the live broadcast. And just last week, fans got their first glimpse of Momo, Aang’s flying lemur friend, in one of several TV spots that rolled out around World Cup coverage. Shortly thereafter, MTV added 30 images to our “Last Airbender” gallery . Fans commented that they would buy tickets just to see Appa the Sky Bison. Finally, just days before the film’s release, we caught up with Shyamalan to find out what inspired the film’s impressive fight choreography (hint: Bruce Lee) and “Twilight” and “Airbender” star Jackson Rathbone answered the age-old “who would win in a fight” question: Jasper Hale or Sokka ? J. Cole Builds On Jay-Z Co-Sign To Be ‘Hottest Breakthrough MCs Of 2010’ Candidate

David Banner, 9th Wonder Promise ‘Jamming’ Message Music On Joint LP

Death of a Pop Star is due this summer on Banner’s independent label. By Jayson Rodriguez David Banner and 9th Wonder Photo: MTV News David Banner had the best of intentions. The Mississippi-bred rapper wanted to give away a free mixtape produced entirely by 9th Wonder titled Death of a Pop Star. But when the pair connected in the studio to record, they soon discovered a problem with Banner’s plan: The music was just too good. “When we did the first three songs, we were like, ‘Man, we ain’t giving this jam away,’ ” 9th Wonder, who produced the entire set, told MTV News. “It was like, ‘Man, this is really some good music.’ ” The former Little Brother beatsmith said his and Banner’s chemistry was apparent immediately. “Then about four or five [records] in, we were like, ‘Oh boy, we can’t give this away,’ ” he recalled. The long-in-the-works collection is meant to critique the musical landscape Banner and 9th Wonder come from. According to both men, the idea of hip-hop not speaking to a range of current events left them both frustrated. Banner, in particular, questioned why his generation hasn’t addressed the BP oil spill, for example. The project’s title, Death of a Pop Star, stems from the idea that an artist can no longer become an outsize entertainer in today’s climate, like Michael Jackson or Lionel Richie, who were known for their philanthropic efforts just as much as their hit records. Banner, however, stressed that the music on the project — due this summer on the rapper’s independent label — is more important than the message. “Before the message, before any of the rest of the stuff about this album, this album is jamming,” he said of the collection, which will include collaborations with Estelle and Ludacris. “I want to get that straight. Something we both talked about, you got a lot of political rappers holding up their fists, but they not jamming. You got a lot of people that are killers and they kill for real, but they not jamming. At the end of the day, we need to get back to what this is about, and that’s good music. If you choose to talk about something over a dope beat or dope song, that’s fine. Whatever you choose to do when you get on it, if you have the lyrical depth, it’s about what you decide to talk about.” Are you looking forward to hearing David Banner and 9th Wonder’s collaboration? ‘Paranormal Activity 2’: Everything We Know So Far

We track the progress of ‘Paranormal Activity’ sequel, from first film’s debut to new teaser trailer. By Josh Wigler “Paranormal Activity” Photo: DreamWorks Pictures You thought the cameras were off. You thought the ghosts were gone. You thought the nightmare was over. You were wrong. The first teaser trailer for “Paranormal Activity 2” premiered online on Wednesday (June 30), offering a startling way to start the day for working stiffs across the country. But even though it feels like the horror sequel is emerging completely out of left field — indeed, it was less than a year ago that the lucrative cult phenomenon first hit theaters — there have actually been several moves behind the scenes to bring “Paranormal 2” to the big screen. The real surprise with “Paranormal Activity 2” is the fact that the film even exists. The original Oren Peli-directed film was nothing short of an astonishing Cinderella story, filmed on a shoestring budget of $15,000 and going on to make close to $200 million worldwide. “Paranormal Activity” caused such a stir that ancillary merchandising unspooled almost immediately after the film’s release, with talk of a sequel following shortly thereafter. Of course, getting the “Paranormal” sequel off the ground wasn’t without some false starts. The sequel was first announced with Michael R. Perry tackling the script and Kevin Greutert directing the film, while original director Oren Peli moved on to film a new horror film, “Area 51.” But Greutert was soon removed from “Paranormal 2” due to his contractual obligations to direct “Saw VII 3-D.” Rumors ran rampant regarding Greutert’s successor, with “Scarface” director Brian De Palma connected to the job at one point. Ultimately, Tod “Kip” Williams won the role. The director’s chair wasn’t the only vacant position that needed filling — the “Paranormal” sequel needed stars, too. Actress Katie Featherston, who was nominated for an MTV Movie Award this year for her “Paranormal” performance, expressed some skepticism about returning for the sequel when she spoke with MTV in May. “I don’t know. I’m waiting to hear,” Featherston said . “If they had a way to put me in there in a way that would be reasonable and make sense — I don’t know how they’d do that — I’d definitely be down for it. If I get that phone call, I will be there. I will be scared or happy or whatever they want me to be.” Actor Micah Sloat seemed to know much more about the status of “Paranormal 2” than his co-star, despite his character’s tragic fate at the conclusion of the first film. “I know a lot I can’t tell you,” Sloat told MTV News in March. “All I can tell you is I’m very excited for the project, it’s really cool, it’s gonna be really interesting and it’s not gonna suck, which most horror sequels … would. This is gonna be good.” Sloat touched on a key difference between the two “Paranormal” films: while the first movie was filmed cheaply as a necessity, “Paranormal Activity 2” has access to a far greater budget thanks to its predecessor’s success. “We we have money now, but we’re staying true to the heart of the movie, to the spirit of it, to the vision,” he said at the time. Judging by the recently released trailer, it’s clear what Sloat meant in terms of staying true to the vision: the franchise’s unique camera perspectives remain intact, if evolved. The scares are sure to deliver as well. Certainly, there are several key details remaining to be filled when it comes to “Paranormal Activity 2,” but there’s one thing that requires no explanation: The sequel’s very existence owes everything to the first film’s outpouring of fan support. “If our fans didn’t go online and ‘demand’ that the movie expand to their own cities, it wouldn’t have gone anywhere. If you didn’t spread the word on Twitter and Facebook, and tell your friends and family they had to see it for themselves, no one would have cared. It was because of you that ‘Paranormal Activity’ expanded from city to city, and eventually — when a MILLION of you demanded that it open nationwide — it finally got the wide release we’d been dreaming about for years,” director Oren Peli said in a statement released to MTV earlier this year. “Looking back on everything, I can truly say that it was your passion and enthusiasm that made it all possible.” Are you excited for “Paranormal Activity 2”? The Paranormal Activity 2 Trailer: Yep, Still Scary

Say what you will about Paranormal Activity , but that film had one of the marketing materials of any film in the last few years: An expertly cut trailer that made audiences simultaneously think of The Blair Witch Project and demand that they get to see what all the fuss was about. Things look to be about status quo with in the trailer for the rushed through production sequel if only because — how can I put this? — it still looks scary as sh*t. You’ll probably want to cover your eyes right about now.
