‘I Feel Like I Don’t Live In America:’ The Best Worst Prop 8 Reactions

Yesterday, a federal judge ruled that Proposition 8 — the voter initiative that amended the California Constitution to define marriage as heterosexual — is unconstitutional. The usual pro-Prop 8, anti-gay marriage suspects began hollering almost immediately. Here, the best of the best (or worst, depending on how you look at it): The Founding Fathers Would Be Shocked From the chairman of National Organization for Marriage, or NOM: Here we have an openly gay (according to the San Francisco Chronicle) federal judge substituting his views for those of the American people and of our Founding Fathers who I promise you would be shocked by courts that imagine they have the right to put gay marriage in our Constitution. Shocked, probably. But $10 says the Founding Fathers would also be shocked by women wearing pants, a black man becoming president and cable news. But The Judge Is Gay From the president of the American Family Association: It's also extremely problematic that Judge Walker is a practicing homosexual himself. He should have recused himself from this case, because his judgment is clearly compromised by his own sexual proclivity. The fundamental issue here is whether homosexual conduct, with all its physical and psychological risks, should be promoted and endorsed by society. That's why the people and elected officials accountable to the people should be setting marriage policy, not a black-robed tyrant whose own lifestyle choices make it impossible to believe he could be impartial. His situation is no different than a judge who owns a porn studio being asked to rule on an anti-pornography statute. He'd have to recuse himself on conflict of interest grounds, and Judge Walker should have done that. This Will Be Dangerous When We Have A Lesbian On The Supreme Court From former House Speaker Newt Gingrich: Today's notorious decision also underscores the importance of the Senate vote tomorrow on the nomination of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court because judges who oppose the American people are a growing threat to our society. In other words, “cough cough Kagan's totally gay cough.” What Next? Is Jesus Unconstitutional? From Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC): Today's wrongful court decision is another attempt to impose a secular immorality on the American people who keep voting to preserve traditional marriage. added by: TimALoftis

Montana Fishburne’s Hardcore Movie Trailer of the Day

I love this shit, even if it looks like just another gully girl getting fucked by a white man for money, …cuz I know this bitch isn’t gully at all, this bitch is from a famous dad, raised surrounded by white folk, upper class upbringing with all the opportunities available from good schooling, to connections that could get her anywhere she wanted to be, but instead she does porn. It’s obviously some kind of rebellion and not her tapping into her poor roots but whatever the psychology behind this is, I’m loving it. I also love this shit cuz it’s just a sign of the times, where 20 year old girls and probably girls younger, are thinking the key to success isn’t education or hard work, it’s getting naked and fucked on camera, cuz when you are naked and fucked on camera, people notice…. This is only a taste of what’s to come and I’m glad I’m on the front lines…. Tribune Co. Chief Innovation Officer Develops Newscast Sans Anchors or Reporters

Remember Lee Abrams , the eccentric (some would say nutty) Chief Innovation Officer of the Tribune Company best known for writing bizarre stream of conciousness memos that sound like the author is on an acid trip? Well, he and his memos are back to promote the launch of a new newscast at KIAH Channel 39 in Houston which will be notable for its lack of anchors or reporters. This development comes on the heels of the utter failure of another Abrams project launched with much enthusiasm last year at WSFL-TV in South Florida, The Morning Show. The sad fate of that show was described in a memo yesterday sent out to the staff by publisher Howard Greenberg of the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel which runs that station: Earlier this morning, WSFL-TV announced the cancellation of The Morning Show, with today being the last broadcast. Launched on April 13, 2009, the program was designed to provide the competitive South Florida market with a fresh take on morning news. We had high hopes for the program, and significant effort from throughout the company went into developing the show. While we’re proud of what we accomplished in a short period of time, the audience didn’t build the way we had anticipated, and we had to make the difficult decision to end production. Every effort is being made to help affected employees with this transition, including assisting them in exploring placement within our organization and at other Tribune properties. We’re also helping facilitate the production of resume tapes and other material for departing staff members. Bob Norman of the Daily Pulp makes an observation about what the real problem with that show was: The problem, of course, was that there wasn’t really anything new about it all — it was a traditional morning show at its core, only with younger hosts and an emphasis on the show’s website that never really created any buzz or took off.  However, at the time of the launch of The Morning Show, Abrams waxed enthusiastic about it in this memo : Very blown away by the morning show! Not only the show, but the spirit and attitude of EVERYONE involved. If we can get 10 percent of this level of afdi, energy and willingness to reinvent at our other stations, we’ll truly revolutionize TV. There were quite a few nitpiks that I’ll review today with the group, but overall, they are soooo local and soooo refreshingly and NOTICEABLY different from EVERYone else. The other stations look disconnected, TOO professional and slick and “nationalized” in comparison, and I think this show is on track to hit its psychographic head on. Watched the competition and it was hilariously dated–Stiff, evil looking Ivory Tower news people wearing 1987 Reagan era suits, taking “news speak” with blue and silver everywhere. As organic and real as a chunk of linoleum. The CONTENT was generally fine, but undermined by a dated-playbook presentation. They know their place on the intellectual/culture scale—and nail it well. Undettered by that massive flop, Abrams has gone on to apply his Chief Innovation Officer skills to a new project in Houston as described by David Barron of the Houston Chronicle: Channel 39 will end its traditional newscasts by this fall to launch a new format called NewsFix, which discards on-camera anchors and reporters and focuses on natural sound and video to tell stories. KIAH employees were informed Thursday about the changes, which apparently involve reassigning anchors and reporters to new, off-camera duties and signal a sharp reversal from the station’s recent advertising campaign focusing on its lead anchor, Mia Gradney. Somehow I don’t think that idea of ditching on-air anchors and reporters was exactly popular with the staff. One can only imagine the mood in the KIAH newsroom when that announcement was made.  Roger Bare, Channel 39’s general manager, said KIAH will be the pilot program for Tribune Broadcasting’s NewsFix, which is expected to launch in late September or early October. “The core concept is to focus more on storytelling by allowing those in the story to tell the story and to place video and audio at the center of all that we do,” Bare said, repeating a sentence included in a memo given to employees. One Channel 39 employee, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak on the station’s behalf, said employees were told that the newscast would feature fast-paced stories, added special effects and a minimum of on-camera appearances by reporters or anchors. “It’s not going to be as much of a newscast as a collection of stories that will roll into each other,” the employee said. “There will be natural sound, and you won’t see the reporters. “It will be news for people who don’t watch news, which sounds a lot like opening a bar for people who don’t drink.” And who was the “genius” behind this innovation? None other than the Chief Innovation Officer: NewsFix is the brainchild of Lee Abrams , the former radio executive who is Tribune Co.’s chief innovation officer. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Abrams said the company wants to “bring us into the 21st century in terms of what (viewers) see and hear. It’s elevating us and escaping the grip of the 1970s television playbook that seems to be what every station in America is addicted to.” So having failed with a newscast in Florida, Abrams is rewarded by being allowed to apply his “innovative” ideas to another newscast in Texas. Perhaps with his next project, Abrams will launch a newscast without news. Oops! That’s already been done. I think it is called MSNBC. Looking forward to more entertaining Lee Abrams memos!

Teen Raped After Being Used by School as "Bait"

If a high school student goes to administrators to report that she and another teenage girl were raped by a boy at the school, you might think that the immediate course of action would be to keep the survivors safe while investigating the allegations. But a student at Upper St. Claire High School is suing her school district for using her as bait, which resulted in her being raped a second time. It's possible that the principal had watched The Sting a few too many times and thought that he could launch his own undercover operation. Even so, to put a sexual assault victim in the path of her rapist seems like an absurd level of endangerment — except that Principal Michael Ghilani didn't believe that he was dealing with a rape survivor. Instead, he turned the rape victims into guilty parties, deciding that student were having consensual sex on school premises after hours, and he wanted them all caught. Instead of having the girls safely escorted to their bus, as the teacher to whom the crime was first reported wanted to do, Principal Ghilani kept them on school grounds and tasked the school police to follow them — in order to see if they went somewhere to have sex, rather than to watch out for their well-being. The police apparently thought everybody had gone home, but were mistaken, since two girls reported being raped in the stairwell that afternoon. Why the principal would think that the girl would report on herself having consensual sex is beyond me. In the school district's attempt to defend its gross negligence, it argued that these girls were just jealous of other girls having sex with the boy in question. The boy himself, by the way, has pleaded guilty to sexual assault, although not to rape, and faces up to four years imprisonment. Cara writes on the Curvature, “I’m honestly not even sure which facet of this case I find most appalling — the lesson that if you report being raped to your school, they’ll use you as a method to catch other students doing allegedly naughty things rather than protecting you; or the lesson that if you report being raped to your school, they’ll respond to their own culpability in the situation by telling the national media that you wanted it, anyway.” The lawsuit further states that the school knew that the boy was sexually harassing and assaulting girls the month before this incident took place, but did nothing. The school also failed to report any rapes occurring for the year's Safe Schools Report, which suggests that the administrators might have chosen to perceive the attacks as consensual in order not to have to admit the lack of safety in their hallways. Why guarantee the security of your students when you can just present the appearance of security. added by: putdownmypants

Omar Thornton: "I Killed the 5 Racists That Were Bothering Me". 9 Total Are Now Dead.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eM-1XnAWvLY http://www.mefeedia.com/news/32255459 http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-20012557-504083.html Whether they were racist or not is not the issue. The issue is that this man decided to take the law into his own hands and he should absolutely be held completely accountable for all of his actions. Race or insanity should not hold up as defenses for his terrible actions. ____________________________________________________________________ MANCHESTER, Conn. — A warehouse driver who a union official said was caught on video stealing beer from the distributorship where he worked went on a shooting rampage there Tuesday, killing eight people and wounding two before committing suicide. Omar Thornton, 34, pulled a handgun after a meeting in which he had been offered the chance to quit or be fired, Manchester Police Chief Marc Montminy said. Among those killed was Thornton's union representative at the meeting. The gunman, who was black, had complained of racial harassment and said he found a picture of a noose and a racial epithet written on a bathroom wall, the mother of his girlfriend said. Her daughter told her that Thornton's supervisors told him they would talk to his co-workers. Brett Hollander, whose family owns the distributorship, said, “I can assure you there has never been any racial discrimination at our company.” And a union official said Thornton had not filed a complaint of racism with the union or any government agency. Thornton had been caught on videotape stealing beer, Teamsters official Christopher Roos said. “It's got nothing to do with race,” Roos said. “This is a disgruntled employee who shot a bunch of people.” Thornton's girlfriend had been with him the night before the rampage and had no indication he was planning it, said her mother, Joanne Hannah. On Tuesday morning, about 50 to 70 people were in the warehouse about 10 miles east of Hartford during a shift change when the gunman opened fire around 7 a.m., Hollander said. Adding to the chaos at the warehouse was a fire, which was put out. Montminy said he didn't know how the fire started, but didn't think it was set. The shooting was over in a matter of minutes, Montminy said. The victims were found all over the complex, and authorities don't know if Thornton fired randomly or targeted specific co-workers, Montminy said. After shooting his co-workers, Thornton called his mother, Hannah said. “He wanted to say goodbye and that he loved everybody,” Hannah said. Thornton was alive when police got to the scene but killed himself before officers got to him, Montminy said. A police sharpshooter had approval to fire on Thornton when he killed himself, an official with knowledge of the scene told the AP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it. Hannah said her daughter, Kristi, had dated Thornton for the past eight years. Kristi Hannah did not return calls for comment. “Everybody's got a breaking point,” Joanne Hannah said. Hannah described Thornton as an easygoing guy who liked to play sports and video games. She said he had a pistol permit and had planned to teach her daughter how to use a gun. Hollander's cousin, Steve, who's a vice president at the company, was shot in the arm and the face. Hollander said he thought his cousin would be OK. Steve Hollander would not comment when reached on his cell phone. Police declined to release the names of those killed. Among the dead was Bryan Cirigliano, 51, of Newington, president of Teamsters 1035, according to the union. He had been Thornton's representative at Tuesday's disciplinary hearing, the union said. Bill Ackerman, a 51-year-old warehouseman, also was killed, said his girlfriend, Stephanie Laurin. “I was like, 'Where's Billy, where's Billy?' and they said they hadn't seen him. And then one of his co-workers told me … that he saw the shooter go to where Billy's room is that he works in,” she said. “I was just praying to God that he was OK.” Ackerman, who enjoyed playing golf and rooting for the Boston Red Sox, had worked for the company for about 20 years, she said. The Hartford Courant identified another victim as Victor James, 59, of Windsor. Two victims were being treated at Hartford Hospital. The rampage was the nation's deadliest since 13 people were fatally shot at Fort Hood, Texas, in November. A military psychiatrist is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in that case. In Connecticut, a state lottery worker gunned down four supervisors in 1998 before committing suicide, and six people were killed in 1974 in botched robbery at a bakery in New Britain. Two men were convicted of that crime. On Tuesday, a few dozen relatives and friends of the victims gathered a few miles away at Manchester High School. Outside, people talked, hugged and cried. Others talked on cell phones. Police officers from numerous agencies and police and fire vehicles surrounded the warehouse, on a tree-lined road in an industrial park just west of a shopping mall. Thornton listed Hoffman's Gun Center & Indoor Range in Newington as among his interests on his Facebook page. A company official declined to comment. Thornton filed for bankruptcy protection a decade ago. His Chapter 7 petition in 2000 listed $4,850 in assets, including a 1994 Chrysler Concorde, and more than $15,000 in liabilities — primarily debt on credit card and student loan payments. His debts were discharged in March 2001 and the case was closed the following month. The Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities said Hartford Distributors has never had any complaints filed against it. The Hollander family is widely respected in Manchester, said state Rep. Ryan Barry, a lifelong resident. He said the family-owned Hartford Distributors sponsors local sports teams and the family is civic-minded. “Everybody knows the Hollanders as good, generous, upstanding people,” Barry said. “They're embedded in the community. Everyone knows Hartford Distributors. They treat their employees very well and they're part of the fabric of the town.” In a statement, Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell offered condolences to the victims' families and co-workers. “We are all left asking the same questions: How could someone do this? Why did they do this?” she said. added by: keithponder

Mel Gibson Email to Oksana Grigorieva: The Tranquilizers Make Me Nuts!

The Mel Gibson tapes are just insane. They’d be absolutely wild, disturbing stuff from any person, let alone one of the biggest movie stars in history. That said, two big questions remain unanswered: 1. Did he actually abuse Oksana Grigorieva , as she alleges? 2. What the HELL made him so crazy?! Investigators probing Mel for domestic violence are examining a secret email he sent Oksana that may offer an explanation for his erratic behavior. The email, sent the day after the alleged, violent January 6 confrontation with his then-girlfriend, reads: “The tranqullizers (sic) only make me nuts.” Is this an apparent reference to pharmaceutical drug use ? “Tranquilizers” could refer to any number of things, from depressants used to treat anxiety and insomnia to drugs aiding substance withdrawal. The actor was trying to quit smoking then, and on February 18, when ALL the now-infamous Mel Gibson phone calls were recorded by Oksana. If authentic, the email obtained today by Radar Online could shed new light on the psychological state of the troubled star and his pure rage . The message was supposedly retrieved from Oksana’s phone and computer, confiscated as part of the criminal probe underway involving Gibson. Mel supposedly sent the email January 7 at 9:39 a.m. The night before, Oksana has claimed, Mel punched her while she was holding baby Lucia. Mel’s lawyers have never addressed the tapes or his comments, but say that he ever struck Oksana Grigorieva and have accused her of extortion. Eleven minutes after he sent that, Mel apologetically wrote again, pleading with her to call so he could tell her “how unspeakably sorry” he was.

Depressed People Really Do See a Gray World

“Researchers at the University of Freiburg in Germany had previously shown that people with depression have difficulty detecting black-and-white contrast differences. In new research, published in the journal Biological Psychiatry, the team had 40 patients with major depression and 40 healthy individuals view a sequence of five black-and-white checkerboards of different contrasts. Meanwhile, the researchers measured the pattern electroretinogram, which is similar to anelectrocardiogram (ECG) of the retina of the eye. The depressed patients had dramatically lower retinal responses to the varying black-and-white contrasts than healthy individuals. The results held regardless of whether patients were taking antidepressants. “These data highlight the profound ways that depression alters one's experience of the world,” said Dr. John Krystal, editor of the journal. “The poet William Cowper said that 'variety's the very spice of life,' yet when people are depressed, they are less able to perceive contrasts in the visual world. This loss would seem to make the world a less pleasurable place.” http://www.livescience.com/culture/depressed-people-see-gray-world-100720.html added by: DeliaTheArtist

Empathy is What Really Sets Vegetarians Apart (at least Neurologically Speaking)

An article appeared in PLoS one this May which describes brain differences between Vegetarians, Vegans and Omnivores in the way they process pictures of animal suffering. I wasn't going to write about this until later this week, but since the always popular Scientific Fundamentalist has a related post out at the moment, I figure I should “jump on the bandwagon” with this right away. So here we go: The study in question is a neuroimaging study intent on investigating whether “the neural representation of conditions of abuse and suffering might be different among subjects who made different feeding choice due to ethical reasons, and thus result in the engagement of different components of the brain networks associated with empathy and social cognition” The hypothesis behind this study is based on the observation that Vegetarians and Vegans tend to base their decision to avoid animal products on ethical grounds. Assuming that Vegetarians and Vegans – because of their underlying moral philosophies – show greater empathy towards animal suffering, it is very well possible that these differences in empathy extend beyond the animal domain and show up as general differences in the degree of empathy felt towards other humans also; even at a neurological level. The study – in basic terms – investigates this hypothesis by placing subjects into a functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) machine and looking at the “activation” of different brain areas as subjects view a randomized series of pictures. The pictures used for this study included neutral scenes and an even share of scenes depicting various kinds of animal and human suffering. The first main finding of this study is that, compared to Omnivores, Vegans and Vegetarians show higher activation of empathy related brain areas (e.g. Anterior Cingular Cortex and left Inferior Frontal Gyrus) when observing scenes of suffering; whether it be animal or human suffering. Further, pictures of animal suffering (in contrast to pictures human suffering) recruited specific brain regions in Vegans and Vegetarians that were not differentially recruited by Omnivores. These were areas which are thought to be associated with higher-order representations of the self and self values (e.g. medial Prefrontal Cortex). In addition to generally higher activations in the above mentioned areas, a second main finding of this study is that there are certain brain areas which only Vegetarians and Vegans seem to activate when processing pictures of suffering. In particular, when viewing pictures of human suffering, Vegetarians in this study recruited additional brain areas thought to be associated with bodily representations that distinguish self from others. (Notably these areas were particularly active when mutilations were shown). The study has – of course – its own shortcomings, and I am somewhat breaking one of my own rules here by presenting fMRI related research without a thorough discussion of the statistics involved, however I feel vindicated by the fact that the authors themselves remain moderate in their conclusions by stating that “Our results converge with theories that consider empathy as accommodating a shared representation of emotions and sensations between individuals, allowing us to understand others. They also led us to speculate that the neuronal bases of empathy involve several distinct components including mirroring mechanisms, as well as emotion contagion and representations of connectedness with the self. In addition, brain areas similar to those showing different emotional responses between groups in our study have also been found to be modulated by religiosity, further supporting a key role of affect and empathy in moral reasoning and social values.” [italics added]. All things considered, the study suggests that Vegetarians are more empathetic to the suffering of others, but as I contemplate the well-documented health benefits of a Vegetarian diet, as well as the environmental and social hazards of current meat eating habits and production practices, I think it is obvious that reducing your meat consumption will first and foremost be an act of compassion towards yourself. http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/evolved-primate/201005/empathy-is-what-reall… Here is the original study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2877098/ More links at original link, too. added by: animalia_libero
