13 Reasons Why: Does It Glorify Suicide?

13 Reasons Why is a breakout hit for Netflix. The streaming network never goes public with download numbers for its programs, but it came out last week that the drama has been the most Tweeted-about series of 2017. In this day and age, there’s nearly no better metric with which to measure success. But 13 Reasons Why has been making headlines ever since its March 31 release for reasons aside from hashtags and social media mentions. The series has raised numerous red flags for mental health experts, many of whom believe it sends a potentially dangerous message about teenage suicide. In short, the show centers around a high school student named Hannah. We find out almost immediately that she’s killed herself, although she still narrates the entire first season because Hannah recorded 13 tapes prior to slitting her wrists, each of which calls out certain individuals at her high school for how they treated her. And, therefore, how each contributed to her decision to take her own life. The drama (co-produced by Selena Gomez ) is meant to leave a strong impact on its viewers, touching on such topics as bullying, sexual assault and underage drinking. Netflix makes it clear, via a special message, at the outset of various episodes that the upcoming content is graphic and mature in nature. But this isn’t enough for some institutions and some doctors. A handful of middle schools and high schools have sent letters home, urging parents to not allow their children to watch 13 Reasons Why without adult supervision. “Suicide is a tough issue to talk about,” says Dr. Christina Conolly, who works for Maryland’s Montgomery County School District, where she helped write a letter that states “adolescents watching without an adult … could be at increased risk of self-harm.” Dr. Conolly doesn’t necessarily call out 13 Reasons Why for any of its storylines, simply saying in general: “Watching a suicide or knowing someone who has died by suicide can lead others to completing a suicide themselves.” The National Association of School Psychologists agrees, declaring in its own statement: “We do not recommend that vulnerable youth, especially those who have any degree of suicidal ideation, watch this series.” More specifically, some in the professional field question why the show never really brings up the topic of mental health in general, while also finding fault with the way in which it paints suicide as a form of revenge. They also have a major problem with how a guidance counselor appears to blame Hannah for having been raped by a fellow student. It’s this conversation, Hannah herself says in one of her audio tapes, that serves as the final nail in her tragic coffin. In the upstate New York community of Grand Island, school administrators warned that the series “sensationalizes suicide.” Indiana’s largest school district warned in an email that the series “does not accurately model what we would want or hope individuals do if they are struggling or in crisis.” 13 Reasons Why is based on a 2007 novel by the same name. But the TV version takes many liberties, veering far off the original script at times and expanding on many developments and character arcs. Gomez, who has talked openly about her own emotional struggles over the years, said she was braced for a backlash upon agreeing to produce the drama. “It’s going to come no matter what. It’s not an easy subject to talk about. But I’m very fortunate with how it’s doing,” she has said. Brian Yorkey, who won a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize for the musical Next to Normal, was one of the main writers on 13 Reasons Why. He disagrees with the critics who think the show paints suicide in any sort of positive or glamorous light.  “Many people are accusing the show of glamorizing suicide and I feel strongly – and I think everyone who made the show – feel very strongly that we did the exact opposite,” he says, adding: What we did was portray suicide and we portrayed it as very ugly and very damaging.” View Slideshow: 21 Stars Who Committed Suicide According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, suicide is the second-leading cause of death among American teens between the ages of 15 to 19. It’s a real issue, one that those behind 13 Reasons Why say they have taken as seriously as possible. Asked about troubled teens and their possible response to what they see on screen, including a graphic depiction of Hannah killing herself, Gomez says: “They have to see something that’s going to shake them. This show is as real as it can possibly get.”

R&Burning: Man Sues R. Kelly Over Claims He Slept With His Wife And Gave Her Chlamydia

Man Claims R. Kelly Had An Affair With His Wife One Mississippi cop is fed up with R. Kelly smashing his wife behind his back — allegedly — and is taking the crooner to court to put a stop to it once and for all. Deputy Kenny Bryant has filed official docs claiming that he has suffered “emotional, psychological and financial loss” at Kelly’s hands since the man has been sleeping with his wife, Asia Childress, for the last five years. According to Page Six , Kenny claims that Asia confessed that she had a sexual encounter with R. Kelly back in 2012, just before their wedding that July. He believes that Asia and Kells linked up once again that October after she attended one of his concerts, and began a full-on sexual relationship from that point forward . Kenny says that Asia convinced him to quit his career as a county sheriff’s deputy and move the couple to Atlanta. Even though she told him it would likely lead to better opportunities in an Atlanta metro area PD, he believes it was really so that she could more easily access R. Kelly to continue their affair. Kenny says that Asia also frequently traveled out of state to R. Kelly shows to rendezvous with the Pied Piper. He ALSO claims that Asia contracted chlamydia from R. Kelly around the time they re-sparked their sexual liaisons. DAMN. Now, how exactly he feels like this entitles him to money from R. Kelly…we aren’t quite sure. Spouses cheat every day…and while it’s definitely WRONG, it’s not exactly illegal. If anything, he needs to be taking his wife to divorce court and running her pockets, provided any of this is factual. Splash/WENN

Judge Grants Stephen Belafonte Visitation Of His Daughter With Mel B, But NOT Eddie Murphy’s Little Girl

Stephen Belafonte Gets Visitation Of Daughter With Mel B In addition to racks and racks of spousal support , Stephen Belafonte petitioned the judge in his divorce proceedings from “Scary Spice” Mel B to get joint custody of not only his own daughter with Mel B, but her daughter with Eddie Murphy as well. As you know, Stephen and Mel started dating while she was 5 months pregnant with Eddie Murphy’s daughter Angel, and the two got married just a month after she was born. As such, and with Eddie’s own spotty involvement in his daughter’s life, Stephen has been the only father she’s ever truly known. However, he’s also on the hook for years of physical and emotional abuse and intimidation of Mel B, so that complicates things — especially since there’s a standing restraining order to keep him away from her and all her daughters . Well, a judge granted Stephen visitation under VERY strict supervision — but only for his own daughter, 5-year-old Madison. As far as 10-year-old Angel Murphy Brown…the judge says he needs to keep his distance. Welp! It seemed like a stretch request anyway with all the abuse and sex extortion allegations floating around … Splash

Amber Portwood & Catelynn Lowell: Partying Despite Addiction Issues

Teen Mom and Teen Mom 2 are unique among reality shows, in that the central cast members rarely spend any time together. The show was conceived as a means of chronicling the varying experiences of different teenage expectant mothers in different regions of the US. These days it’s taken on more of a soapy docu-drama feel, but the ladies still live in far-flung regions of the country, in most cases far from any metropolitan cultural centers. A few times a year, however, the entire cast of Teen Mom: OG descends upon New York or LA to record supplemental material or attend an event sponsored by MTV. Last week, all four of the series’ leads flew to Los Angeles for a premiere party celebrating the debut of Teen Mom: OG Three-fourths of the cast (Farrah remains on the outs with the other ladies) hit the town for a sort of mobile after-party after things rapped up, and predictably, things got a wild crazy. Obviously, there’s nothing wrong with a few twenty-somethings hitting the town and ingesting some substances now and then, but fans are a bit concerned due to the troubled pasts of two of the ladies who got went out raging that night.   If you watch Teen Mom online , you’re probably aware that Amber Portwood and Catelynn Lowell have both struggled with emotional and substance abuse issues in the not-so-distant past. Portwood went to prison , choosing incarceration over rehab after a series of brushes with the law. Lowell checked into rehab for a number of emotional issues, and decided that she suffers from a “psychological addiction” to marijuana. So it’s a bit surprising that the ladies were decided to chronicle their booze- and weed-fueled night on the town for their social media followers. The above image from Tyler Baltierra’s Snapchat is a little tough to make out, but it appears to show Amber’s fiance, Matt Baier, brandishing a bottle of booze in the back of a limo. It’s one of a few blurry photos from that night, but more telling than the images they posted on social media are the words: “Happy 420 everyone,” Lowell tweeted at one point. “Remember NO smoking and driving! Always remember park and spark!” Lowell recently admitted on Lowell that she’s frequented dispensaries in states where weed is legal (like California). Guess she’s not too worried about that “psychological addiction” these days. As for Portwoord, she’s addressed fans’ concerns about her drinking in the past by explaining that she’s sober from prescription pain pills, and has no issues with booze. We guess if it works for Amber and Catelynn, then who are we to judge? Here’s hoping both of the ladies stay safe. View Slideshow: Teen Mom: HOW MUCH Do The Stars Make?!

Javi Marroquin: Blaming MTV For Divorce From Kailyn Lowry?!

When we first learned that Kailyn Lowry and Javi Marroquin were getting divorced , it looked as though the couple would pull off something that no previous Teen Mom couple had managed: Lowry and Marroquin wanted an amicable co-parenting relationship, and they both seemed committed enough to make it happen. Of course, it wasn’t long before reality interfered with that goal. On the most reason season of Teen Mom 2, viewers watched Kailyn and Javi’s relationship deteriorate rapidly. The situation culminated in an incident in which Javi entered Kailyn’s home without permission during a fit of jealous rage. She wound up pursuing legal action and being issued a temporary order of protection. Javi opened up about his divorce during a recent interview with something called Posh Kids magazine, and he says the stress of starring on such a high-profile show added to the pressure that caused his marriage to crack: “I believe that it adds stress,” Marroquin said when asked about shooting the series. “You’re filming these long seasons. I mean it’s human instinct to be stressed naturally.” But while Javi  does seem to believe that reality TV played a role in the dissolution of his marriage, he’s careful not to bite the hand that feeds him: “MTV doesn’t hold a gun to your head,” he tells the magazine. “I’m not going to attribute the show to the fail of my marriage. I think we both made decisions and some were right some were wrong and that is what ultimately lead to the end of our marriage.” To his credit, Javi accepts at least partial blame for his Kailyn’s breakup, as well as for the ugly turn the various ways in which both parties made life more difficult for each other in the months following their divorce: “I think I could have handled it a lot better than what I did,” he said. “Everything was still raw and still so new, and I was in a bad place.” Remarkably, Javi says he and Kailyn have actually repaired their friendship and are doing well these days: “We are actually doing really well,” the 24-year-old recently told Radar Online. “Everything is behind us now and we’ve moved on. It’s all about the boys now and it’s great.” Of course, that probably means he knows the identity of Kailyn’s newest baby daddy . Unfortunately, it looks like he’s not talking. Watch Teen Mom 2 online to relive the many ups and downs of Kailyn and Javi’s relationship. View Slideshow: Kailyn Lowry & Javi Marroquin Divorce: A Timeline of Destruction

Tarek El Moussa: How Did He Get THAT Body?!?

Let’s face it: We all knew Christina El Moussa was hot. It’s why so many husbands out there are cool with their wives turning on Flip or Flip six times per week. But Tarek El Moussa?!? Did anyone expect to see this reality star whip off his shirt and reveal a six-pack that rivals Justin Bieber’s and shoulders that one could easily mistake for those of The Rock? The controversial home renovator stunned fans this week when he unveiled a number of shirtless photos , flaunting lots of skin and even more muscles for the Internet to gawk over. It’s pretty safe to assume that Tarek went public with these pictures in response to his estranged wife posting several bikini-clad images on social media just days prior. One revenge body deserves another, right? If Christina wants to taunt Tarek will all he’ll never tap again, then it’s only right for Tarek to respond in handsome kind, no? Actually… no. Tarek wrote a lengthy caption to the sexy snapshot above, explaining that he decided to share it with the world in the hopes that it would inspire fellow cancer survivors. Back in 2014, Tarek was diagnosed with both testicular cancer and thyroid cancer. “I shot this and was too embarrassed to share so I didn’t… I know my journey has inspired many people so I made the difficult decision to post,” wrote El Moussa about the rock-hard picture above. He added: “This is after battling 2 cancers and a debilitating back injury. My doctor said “You would probably never be able to lift weights again”… that motivated me to prove him wrong and get into the best shape of my life!!! “Thank you to my trainer @quintin_tucker for all the hard work and motivation and @pyejirsa for the amazing photos. “Remember….it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” This is the second time of late that Tarek has addressed his past battles against cancer. In mid-March, El Moussa posted a very different kind of photo online (below), one that was snapped during one of his lowest points in life. “I thought I would share this with everyone… to truly understand how absolutely sick I was,” Tarek wrote about this third picture, continuing as follows: “Look at this photo and look at my eyes, I was a skeleton.” So… how did Tarek go from THAT to THIS? To what he looks like now? Personal trainer Quintin Tucker says Tarek could barely walk and was in “a tortuous amount of pain” when the two met. “The amount of motivation and fight Tarek had in the beginning is unmatched by any other client I have yet had and was paramount to his recovery,” Tucker tells E! News , adding: “Session after session he would always say, ‘I’m going to be your biggest transformation, I’m going to get back into the best shape of my life,’ and he did.” Tucker went on to detail Tarek’s workouts with the outlet, saying there was very little cardio involved; client and trainer mostly focused on high intensity weight lifting. Tarek would occasionally fast, but mostly ate a low glycemic diet with a “moderate amount” of protein and healthy fats. Tucker concludes by expressing awe for Tarek’s work ethic, but also for the HGTV star as a parent. “I would drive up to his house in and would wait for him in his gym while he woke up and we would work out before [daughter] Taylor was awake,” Tucker tells E!. “Occasionally she would wake up and run into the gym and begin lifting her mothers little 3 lb. weights. It was the cutest thing ever. They would would always hug and she would say, You’re my best friend dad.’ “I always respected what a great father Tarek was, above all else.” View Slideshow: HGTV Shows: RANKED!

Amber Portwood: Struggling with Weight Gain and Mental Illness

Sometimes it seems like Amber Portwood just can’t catch a break. Between her issues with addiction, the hard reality that comes with being a teen mom (and a Teen Mom), and, you know, Matt Baier , things have always looked kind of rough for her. To add onto her pile of hardships, she’s also got a number of mental illnesses: she’s been open about her anxiety and her bipolar disorder, and more recently she’s been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder . It’s a lot to deal with, and as Amber reveals in a new interview with Women’s Health, she doesn’t deal with it all that well at times. She says that she spent a good part of 2015 losing weight that she’d steadily gained after getting sober, and she got down to 130 pounds, which was a good weight for her. But then, in 2016, she found herself profoundly depressed. So much so that Matt had to drag her out of bed. She went to see a psychiatrist, which is when she received the borderline personality diagnosis. “When I got the diagnosis,” she says, “I wanted to keep it a secret.” “While everyone knew about my other diagnoses — I’ve had anxiety since I was a kid, for as long as I can remember — I guess it was tragic to think I had another mental disorder.” For a while, Matt was the only person who knew, and he actually accompanied her to one of her appointments so her doctor could talk to him. When Amber was told that she’d most likely be on medications to deal with her mental disorders for the rest of her life, she broke down, but she says Matt was there to hold her hand. Matt Baier, doing something sweet and not completely creepy ? The mind boggles. Amber was put on some new medications, including a mood stabilizer. She says she’s happy with what she’s on because she feels “amazing and normal” now, and her meds aren’t ones she can get addicted to. But when she started the meds, she got “cravings like crazy,” and she also got “very tired.” And neither of those things are good for weight loss. In that time, she gained back all the weight she’d worked so hard to lose months before. She tried a no-carb, no-sugar diet — the diet that helped her lose the weight in the first place — but it didn’t work for her. As of now, she’s lost 10 pounds, and though there’s “extra pressure” to lose more weight for her wedding in October (gag), “I’m using that as motivation.” The whole point of sharing her story, she says, is because so many medications for mental illnesses cause weight gain. “For women who are suffering from mental health issues, I want them to know that other people are going through the same thing,” she explains. “And you don’t have to do this alone.” You’re a gem, Amber. You really are. Now drop Matt Baier and own it.
