‘No Negros Allowed’ Sign Posted to Segregate a Wisconsin Strip Club

Many people lauded the election of Barack Obama as the sign that America was finally post-racial. We had arrived at the completion of Dr. King's dream of a colorblind society where a black man could gawk at a white women's boobs without fear of discrimination at his local strip club. Apparently not: A sign excluding black people from a future [strip club] is enraging some people in a small town. Now, the Wisconsin man who put it up is speaking out. It's a sign generations of people may have never seen. Yet a Clark County business man says it's his right to discriminate. Federal and State law says if the business is open to the public, prohibiting people based on race is illegal. If the man's proposed gentlemen's club was going to be a private club, then an African American historian says he could discriminate. Legalities aside, his is a sign that many say is appalling. “If I've got a problem with you it's going to be on the front of my store,” says Mark Prior. Prior posted his 'No Negros Allowed' sign after he says he had some problems with black people in the past and needed to make a policy against them. “I'm going to stick to my guns because I think I have the right as a business owner to reject service to anyone. It's not all the black people there are just a few bad ones,” Prior says of his problems in the past. Prior wants to open a gentlemen's club in a building next to the Abbotsford city hall and library. He says he moved his sign inside after someone with the city asked him to remove it. People in Abbotsford say it's a sign they don't welcome in their town. But, Prior says it's his right as an American and as a business owner to decide who's welcome; a right he says he'll take all the way to court if he has to. “That's the policy. I'm going to stick to my guns,” Prior says. … He also said it's not just black people he's going to ban from his future establishment. He says he has a problem with certain white people as well, but he couldn't just put a lengthy list of names on his building so he felt 'No Negros Allowed' was the best policy. Never mind the fact that Prior's sign (“No Negro's Allowed”) is grammatically incorrect to comically epic proportions. Never mind the fact that businesses which discriminate against patrons on the basis of color are in direct violation of the Civil Rights Act Of 1964. Never mind how silly it is for Prior to state that he's not racist because he doesn't want unruly whites at his club either, but didn't have enough poster board to write a sign prohibiting them from entry specifically by name. Nope, never mind any of that. You know what really jumped out at me about this sad story? Who in the heck thinks it's a good idea to build a strip club next to the public library?!? That's just bad for business. Stay classy, Wisconsin. Personally, I (as usual) blame the Tea Party. When then-Senate candidate Rand Paul stated his disdain for the federal government forcing the Civil Rights Act on states, I knew we as a country were headed down a steep slope towards utter stupidity. The fact that few in the GOP admonished Paul for such a statement was glaring. The fact that Kentuckians just sent Paul to the U.S. Senate for the next 6 years, by a wide margin over his competitor, is even more glaring. added by: TimALoftis

Happy Birthday, Hank Baskett IV!

Hank Baskett IV turns a year old today, and the little guy really needs your best wishes. This is a toddler whose dad continues to be cut by professional football teams and whose mother is so desperate for attention that she’ll mislead the public about a miscarriage . Pretty tragic stuff. Hank, of course, is just the innocent, adorable bystander in all of this. He’s not even aware of how his mother is exploiting him on tabloid covers such as the ones shown here. He probably thinks the cameramen are his relatives. Poor guy. Happy birthday, buddy.

Palin to Walters: The Media Have Made People Think I’m Scary, Uninformed and Polarizing

As NewsBusters reported Thursday, Barbara Walters during an interview to be aired hours later claimed the public find the thought of Sarah Palin as president “scary” because she's “uninformed.” When the full segment aired later that evening, Palin fired back saying, “I think it's because the media has shaped that persona and allowed that to be out there as a misconception and a misperception about my, what my values are and what the positions are that I support” (video follows with transcript and commentary): read more

Johnny Depp Mourns His Sexiest Man Alive Loss To Ryan Reynolds

‘I feel emasculated,’ the ‘Tourist’ actor jokes. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Johnny Depp Photo: MTV News In 2009, Johnny Deep ruled the world of hotness by being named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive. It’s an honor he also held six years prior, in 2003. But in 2010, he no longer ruled the roost. The magazine named Ryan Reynolds this year’s Sexiest Man Alive , something the “Tourist” star was a bit upset about when MTV News caught up with him last week. “I feel emasculated,” he joked about Reynolds taking over the title. “I feel I’ve been beaten down like some horrible … you know, like some pathetic harp seal. But, I mean, that’s how it goes, isn’t it?” Depp shouldn’t feel too upset about the whole thing: He does have a new movie with Angelina Jolie opening this month and he just wrapped up work on another “Pirates of the Caribbean” flick, so he definitely has a lot to look forward to. But he does still feel the sting of losing his title. “I think I can work my way forward, but will I try for it again? No! … I worked so hard to gain that title.” Like Depp, onetime Sexiest Man Alive and Oscar winner George Clooney has also had some good-natured fun after Reynolds assumed the throne. Last month, the actor joked that he was fine with Reynolds being crowned Sexiest because it meant his pal didn’t get the title. “I’m very happy for him,” Clooney told People. “I’m also happy that it’s not Brad [Pitt].” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Tourist.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Carter Alicia Keys Photo: Samir Hussein/Getty Images It’s time to welcome some of your favorite celebrity tweeters back to the land of the living. They proclaimed their own Digital Deaths last Wednesday on World AIDS Day and met their goal Monday (December 6). Some stars began tweeting immediately. The idea was hatched by Keys, and she and other celebs urged their fans to buy back their online lives by texting the first name of the celebrity they miss on social media the most to contribute to the cause. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all of the fans, friends and artists who joined this cause,” Keys said in a statement. “I’m incredibly inspired by all of the donations that have been made to help us achieve our goal and so humbled by the outpour of support from everyone.” Now that the tweeting ban has been lifted, celebrities including Keys, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Ryan Seacrest, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Khlo

How can we balance increasing transpareny with the need for secrecy regarding sensitive information?

In the wake of controversy around the latest documents to appear on Wikileaks, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton has denounced the release of the cables as an “attack on the international community.” Clinton, and others in government, maintain that diplomacy often requires confidentiality to be effective, and that the release of information by sites like Wikileaks could compromise military or diplomatic operations. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and other defenders of the site, however, say that such information should be used to hold the government accountable. In a world where the public demands more transparancy and technology makes information more accessible, how can we balance accountability and transparancy with the need for confidentiality around sensitive government and military operations? added by: sgwhites

NYT Drops ClimateGate-era Ethics Qualms, Publishes Scores of WikiLeaks Docs

The New York Times has taken an admirable stand on the potentially-criminal release of diplomatic cables by the online “whistleblowers” at WikiLeaks. Said one Times reporter: “The documents appear to have been acquired illegally and contain all manner of private information and statements that were never intended for the public eye, so they won't be posted here.” Oh, wait. That wasn't in reference to the WikiLeaks documents. That was the Times's former environmental blogger Andy Revkin discussing the so-called ClimateGate emails . The Times has, in fact, posted a number of American diplomatic documents obtained illegally by WikiLeaks, and containing massive amounts of sensitive diplomatic communications. And so we get another glimpse of the amazing depths of the Gray Lady's hypocrisy. read more

Wikileaks Webstie Down – Urges People Download Insurance File

Developing Story….This is interesting, to say the least. Whistle-blowing organization Wikileaks is urging the public to download their ever-so-famous “insurance” file from The Pirate Bay, according to a recently transmitted tweet. This file, nearly 2GB in size, is said to contain thousands of secret U.S. documents aimed at embarrassing the nation’s government, and potentially causing harm to the United States’ relations with allies. The file has been around since this Summer and is heavily encrypted [AES-256]. In the event of Wikileaks’ founder’s [Julian Assange] death (or some other unspecified reason), the secret key would be released — exposing the documents to all who have downloaded and obtained the key. We’re not sure as to why Wikileaks is now urging users to download the file, but it just may be that they’re soon planning to release the key. This is a developing story. Stay tuned. Update: The WikiLeaks website has gone down. added by: jubal
