Saudi Arabia Women Athletes to Compete in Olympics For First Time

Saudi Arabia will send female athletes to the London Olympics this summer, ending the ultra-conservative Muslim country’s record of not doing so. The decision, announced Thursday by the IOC, means every country competing in the London games will include women athletes for the first time in history. The two female Saudi Arabia Olympic competitors are judo athlete Wodjan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani and 800-meter runner Sarah Attar. The duo, who were invited by the International Olympic Committee, were entered by the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee by the July 9 deadline. “This is very positive news and we will all be delighted to welcome these two athletes in London in a few weeks time,” IOC President Jacques Rogge said. “With Saudi Arabian female athletes now joining their fellow female competitors from Qatar and Brunei, it means that by London 2012 every national Olympic committee will have sent women to the Olympic Games,” he added. Saudi Arabia had been under increasing pressure from the IOC and human rights groups to include women athletes. The IOC has been in negotiations with the Saudis for months on securing the participation of women. Qatar and Brunei, two other countries that have never sent any female athletes to the Olympics, are also including women on their teams in 2012. About 10,500 athletes are expected to compete in London, representing more than 200 national Olympic committees. It should be great.

Demi Lovato Opens Up About Bipolar Disorder

‘I felt relieved when I found out,’ ‘X Factor’ judge tells Cosmopolitan in July issue. By John Mitchell Demi Lovato on the cover of the July issue of Cosmopolitan Photo: Cosmopolitan Demi Lovato is opening up about her bipolar disorder in the July issue of Cosmopolitan, telling the magazine that being diagnosed was a relief because it meant she could treat the problem. “I felt relieved when I found out. Like I’m not completely crazy; there’s a medical reason for all of it,” Lovato says in the July issue. “It’s a daily thing; you don’t get time off from it. And if I feel myself slipping back into old patterns, I have to ask others for help, which is hard for me to learn, because I really like doing everything on my own.” The new “X Factor” judge revealed earlier this year in her MTV documentary that her issues manifested themselves in self-harm, including an eating disorder and self-medicating that resulted in a stay at the Timberline Knolls treatment facility in Illinois. “I had so many issues that were underneath, that needed to be taken care of, and we kept putting Band-Aids over it. It literally drove me insane. I was not eating, and purging, and self-harming. It was really difficult to be able to stop,” Lovato recalled to MTV . “This is a daily battle that I will face for the rest of my life. Everyone kind of made me a role model, and I hated that. I was partying, I was self-medicating. I was always stressing out. I felt like I was living a lie. I felt guilt and shame. I decided to take it out on myself. I harmed myself. It was my way of taking my own shame and my own guilt out on myself, and I was just depressed.” Having gotten the help she needed and with her new high-profile gig on “The X Factor” opposite Britney Spears, the pop star is back on the right path now, and she tells Cosmopolitan that she sees herself with a family in the not-too-distant future. “I want to be married with kids in 10 years,” Lovato revealed. The 19-year-old singer/actress’ past struggles have given her a new perspective on dating as well, teaching her that she should not rush to judgment when it comes to guys — with the exception of one characteristic that she simply will not abide. “I don’t have many deal breakers. I’ve done so much in my life, it doesn’t feel right to judge other people,” Lovato tells the mag. “Oh, I know one quality I won’t tolerate. I would never be with a guy who is controlling.” Related Videos ‘Demi Lovato: Stay Strong’ Related Artists Demi Lovato

Kanye West’s Custom-Built ‘Cruel Summer’ Cinema: Take A Look Inside!

The Cannes premiere of West’s film was held inside a tented pyramid designed to create an effect of ‘levitation,’ according to designers. By James Montgomery Kanye West and Kim Kardashian attend the “Cruel Summer” premiere at the 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival Photo: Getty Images When Kanye West premiered his “Cruel Summer” film last week at Cannes, he did so in his usual, uh, understated manner: projected on seven video screens inside a tented pyramid on the Mediterranean Sea. It was a stylistic choice meant to represent “a post-Steve Jobs, post-Windows era … where your mind puts the screen back together, the way you put memories together … like the experience of life” (so said West in a speech before the premiere). But if you weren’t lucky enough to attend the film’s gala opening — which is to say, if you weren’t Kim Kardashian or Jay-Z — those words probably don’t hold much meaning to you. But now, you can get a glimpse at what it was like to be inside that tented pyramid, as a series of photos of the venue — and the multitude of strategically placed video screens — have hit the Web. Designed by international firm OMA , who have built eye-popping venues in cities like Beijing, Montreal and, uh, Syracuse, the “temporary pavilion” featured seven screens “of cinematic proportions,” and was envisioned as “a constellation of projections that wrap around the audience.” The pyramid itself was created “to create an effect of levitation above the red carpet,” and attendees “ascend[ed] into the pyramid along a continuous red carpet that widen[ed] into the 200-seat auditorium.” The entire projected was site-specific collaboration between OMA, West’s own DONDA collective and Cannes-based production team Ar’Scene. “Cruel Summer,” inspired by West’s upcoming G.O.O.D Music compilation of the same name, stars Kid Cudi as a car thief who falls in love with a blind Arabian princess. The 30-minute film was co-directed by Alexandre Moors, who previously worked with West on his videos for “Runaway” and “N—as in Paris,” and was shot entirely in Qatar in the Middle East. Kanye West To Debut ‘Cruel Summer’ Short Film At Cannes

Mini-movie is inspired by the upcoming G.O.O.D. Music album of the same name. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Getty Images Kanye West doesn’t know how to do small, so whenever the rapper unveils a new project it’s almost always on the biggest platform possible. That explains why his new “short art film,” “Cruel Summer,” will debut on the fabulous Palm Beach in Cannes, France during the Cannes Film Festival. The hush-hush movie, inspired by the upcoming all-star G.O.O.D. Music album
of the same name, will world premiere on May 23 and remain open to the public for two days afterward. It is being screened out of competition in Cannes amid the world-famous film fest. And, this being Kanye, the project is described as, “a fusion of short film and art installation … an immersive ‘7 screen experience’ for the eyes and ears unlike anything West has attempted before.” Among those listed as starring in the film are comedian Aziz Ansari, Kid Cudi, Lebanese actress Razane Jammal (“Djinn”) and Palestinian actor Ali Suliman (“The Kingdom”). Yeezy is listed as the producer, writer and director of the effort, based on a screenplay by Elon Rutberg, who was the associate director of the Throne’s “N—-s in Paris” video. The co-director is Alexandre Moors, who worked with West on “Runaway” as well as the “Paris” clip. Kanye and Cudi were spotted filming scenes for the movie
earlier this year in the middle eastern nation of Qatar, but little or no information has emerged about the subject matter or plot of the project. Expectations are high given the over-the-top look and feel of ‘Ye’s last mini-flick, 2010’s “Runaway.” Click here for ticket information for the screenings. Where Are You Yeezy??? Kanye West Heads To Film In The Middle East, No Camel But There Might Be Some Sheikhs

Cakes and sheikhs? Forget about “Rockin’the Casbah” Yeezy will be ‘rappin’ it instead! The rapper is making plans for his next film project ala “Runaway” set in the glamorous sands of either Abu Dhabi, Dubai or Qatar. Here’s the details: The Observer has learned that Kanye West, the multi-platinum rapper and Twitter super-user recently sent representatives to the Persian Gulf region to scout locations for a short film. The project, which will take a form much like his 30-minute “Runaway”—a hybrid art film and music video starring model Selita E. Banks that premiered on MTV in October, 2010—is to be filmed in March. Sources tell The Observer that Mr. West sent members of his team to meet with film companies and government officials based out of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Doha Qatar to explore the idea of a production. A number of local municipal officials and film companies are said to be engaged in what was characterized as a heated bidding war for the contracts involved in bringing Mr. West’s vision to life. “In Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha all of the film initiatives are government controlled,” one source involved in the talks explained. “A bidding war is going on between various government entities and private investors to fund the film. There’s pretty intense rivalry here between Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Qatar. They all want to claim the film as their own and take credit for generating the publicity.” Part of the reason for the excitement? The story—plot details of which were not divulged by one source “out of respect for Kanye’s ambition”—was conceived by the rapper explicitly to take place in the Gulf. He is said to have fallen in love with the region after a concert performance last year in Abu Dhabi. Mr. West’s creative team is moving to the region for a few weeks, as part of an effort to create an “authentic” depiction of the culture. They plan to utilize local talent and production crews, and are said to be eager to portray the locales and their cultures in a positive light, mindful of recent productions that ran afoul of local sensibilities (2011′s Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol was cited as one example). “His reps seemed genuinely enthusiastic about creating a piece which highlights the culture accurately,” our source explained. “There’s a lot of preconceived notions and stereotypes about Emiratis and Qataris, which Westerners often play up. They discussed how Kanye is looking to bridge the cultural divide and break misconceptions.” Mr. West also reportedly plans to cast some local royalty, as “many of the Sheikhs like to be flashy and appreciate celebrity notoriety.” Sheikhs eh? Wonder if cakes and harems are included, or if that is the kind of stereotype these guys aren’t feelin? This sounds so exciting. We can’t wait to see Yeezy work his film magic in the Middle East. Jay Sean Looks Forward To Freezing Time In 2011

As he rang the closing bell of the NASDAQ in Times Square, the singer reflected on his past and future. By Jay Sean, with additional reporting by Akshay Bhansali Jay Sean rings the closing bell of the NASDAQ in Times Square Photo: Nasdaq MarketSite NEW YORK — To commemorate the first day of trading in the New Year, Jay Sean had the honor of ringing the closing bell at NASDAQ MarketSite in Times Square on Monday, and MTV News tagged along for the ride with his family, friends and industry colleagues. It has certainly been a rather meteoric two-year ride for the Brit in America, and in 2011, the Cash Money R&B singer will release his second stateside album, Freeze Time. At this introspective moment, Sean wrote about his feelings about his past year and the one to come, just for MTV News: “So, another year gone, and so much has happened. Sometimes it feels like it’s all one big blur, and thankfully, I have photos and calendar entries to see exactly what it was that I did!! 2010 was a year in which I witnessed growth. Growth as an artist, as a vocalist, and a songwriter but perhaps more importantly growth as a human being. 2009 ended with me having wedged my foot in the door, and 2010 gave me the opportunity to walk proudly in, quietly confident. By scoring two more hits in the U.S. with “Do You Remember” and “2012 (It Ain’t the End),” I managed slowly but surely to establish my place in the enormous American music scene, and that’s important to get those notches in the belt. One of the coolest memories for me was watching “The Karate Kid,” starring Jaden Smith, and hearing my song “Do You Remember” kick it all off. I can’t pretend I wasn’t overly pleased with myself (mainly because I knew that Will Smith had now heard my music, and anyone can tell you I’m the biggest Will Smith fan! lol). “2010 brought me back into the studio! Songwriting is actually my favorite part. To sit there away from all distractions in the world and create something that hopefully one day the world might hear and that my lovely fans will hopefully BUY LEGALLY FROM ITUNES AND VARIOUS OTHER DIGITAL AND PHYSICAL OUTLETS for, let’s face it, less than the price of two McDonald’s meals … (I digress, but you know what I mean!!) That is amazing for me. Nothing can match that process of creation. I see it as a privilege more than a gift, and I appreciate it. And I appreciate my co-writers and producers!! Big up all yourselves!! I got to work with the best of the best. Together we made an album that I am truly proud of. From its uplifting uptempos to sexy slow jams and melodic mid-tempos, I can honestly say this is my best work yet! If you loved the fun uptempos like “Down,” you’re gonna hear more like that! And if you liked slower sexy songs like “Ride It,” you’re gonna love this album! It’s a sick blend of pop, dance and r’n’b. It’s called Freeze Time, and it’s my fourth album. I can’t wait for you all to hear it when it comes out this year!!! Also last year, I got to work with some of the coolest artist in the world! From Nicki Minaj to Mary J. Blige, last year I shot six music videos, many of which will come out early in 2011, including my duets with Alesha Dixon from the U.K. and Jessica Mauboy in Australia. I also got to do my fourth song with Lil Wayne (FOURTH!!! WTF?!) which featured on his I Am Not A Human Being album! “Today, I leave to go to Qatar to do a concert and sing the Asia Cup theme song on which I’m featured. That’s gonna be a lot of fun! I also toured heavily with my band last year, and shared the stage and got to have jokes with some of the worlds biggest artists: Enrique Iglesias, Bruno Mars, Akon, B.o.B, Pitbull, Sean Paul, Flo Rida, Natasha Bedingfield and Katy Perry, to name just a few! In arenas around the world, to audiences of up to 20,000 in each arena!!! 20, 000!!! Eight years ago, I was onstage singing my heart out at bars to an audience of 23 wasted students, whilst dodging bottles of beer and making out like it was a dance move. Oh, and my DJ at the time was my brother. And the sound guy was, umm … my brother. And now, as I stand on the stage at the 02 in London or MSG in New York, I can honestly say, these are the most incredible live performances I’ve ever done. From Australia, to London, to Miami and Vegas, I traveled around the globe and managed to sing to all my wonderful fans everywhere. (Why does that make me sound like Santa Claus?) I am fortunate to have such loyal fans, and I love you all and thank you for your continued support over the years. You are all allowing me to live my dream, and I thank you for that. “My fans also helped me through the lowest point of my life so far. One of my favorite people on Earth left in November, my granddad. He passed away from a stroke, but fortunately I got to hold his hand in his last hours and tell him how much I love him. That taught me something, watching someone take their last few breaths. To take in ALL that we can, because we never know how long it’s all going to last. My granddad’s motto was ‘Don’t worry man, be happy,’ and I want to live like that from now on, to just not sweat the small stuff and be grateful for what we do have. And to just have fun and enjoy it all!!! Life is about the journey, not just the destination, so I take a lot more photos now so that I can remember all the moments. I’m gonna take on 2011 for everything it throws at me and OWN THAT BIYAAATCH!! I ended 2010 with a bang (and a disgusting hangover) by performing in Vegas for NYE and kicked off the New Year by ringing the closing bell on the first day of trading in 2011 at NASDAQ in Times Square, New York — my unfortunate mug on a GIGANTIC screen in the middle of Times Square, right opposite Diddy! Madness!! 2011 is going to be amazing, I can feel it.” Related Artists Jay Sean

Fox & Al-Qaeda share the same finance sources – Saudis

Wikileaks: Saudis 'chief funders of Sunni militants' The cables said militant groups had used front companies in Saudi Arabia to fundraise Continue reading the main story Wikileaks Revelations US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned last year in a leaked classified memo that donors in Saudi Arabia were the “most significant source of funding to Sunni terrorist groups worldwide”. She said it was “an ongoing challenge” to persuade Saudi officials to treat such activity as a strategic priority. The groups funded include al-Qaeda, the Taliban and Lashkar-e-Taiba, she added. The memo, released by Wikileaks, also criticised efforts to combat militants by the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait. Meanwhile, a lawyer for the founder of the Wikileaks website said he was holding back secret material for release if anything happened to him. He told the BBC that a rape case being prepared in Sweden against Julian Assange, an Australian national, was politically motivated. 'Dependent on CIA' In one classified cable sent in December 2009, Mrs Clinton urged diplomats to redouble efforts to stop funds reaching militants “threatening stability in Pakistan and Afghanistan and targeting Coalition soldiers”. “While the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) takes seriously the threat of terrorism within Saudi Arabia, it has been an ongoing challenge to persuade Saudi officials to treat terrorist financing emanating from Saudi Arabia as a strategic priority,” she wrote. Large sums are raised by militant groups during the annual Hajj pilgrimage, US diplomats believe The Saudi government had begun to make important progress, but “donors in Saudi Arabia constitute the most significant source of funding to Sunni terrorist groups worldwide”, she added. Al-Qaeda, the Taliban and Lashkar-e-Taiba “probably raised millions of dollars” annually from Saudi sources, often during the Hajj – and the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, she alleged. Mrs Clinton said reforms to criminalise terrorist financing and restrict the overseas flow of funds from Saudi-based charities had been effective, but that they did not cover equally suspect “multilateral organisations”. sources and more on http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-11923176 added by: alexandrek
