Nate Dogg To Be Mourned At Public Wake Today

The event will precede the ‘Regulate’ singer’s funeral service, which is expected to be held on Saturday. By Jayson Rodriguez Nate Dogg Photo: Todd Williamson/ Getty Images Nate Dogg is set to be celebrated and honored on Friday (March 25) in his hometown of Long Beach, California. The hip-hop singer unexpectedly passed away earlier this month after suffering multiple health setbacks in the past several years stemming from separate strokes. His life will be recognized at a public viewing to be held at the Queen Mary hotel. His family and close friends, in addition to fans, are expected to attend the event, which is taking place a day before the singer’s funeral is expected to be held. Last week, Warren G., who teamed with Nate Dogg for the pair’s breakout hit, “Regulate,” spoke about his friend’s death to MTV News while attending a tribute show at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. “I was out on the Sweat Tour with Snoop, and we had got the word from his family on what was going on, and it was just a crushing blow for us,” he said. “Just, from going to see him and lifting his spirits up when he was in therapy, and stuff like that, it’s just crazy for that to happen. And I still don’t believe it, you know what I’m saying?” Warren added, “It kind of hurts me when I look at this shirt [the SXSW tribute show’s organizers sold Nate Dogg T-shirts, with proceeds going to the late singer’s family], it’s like, ‘Damn, that’s my homeboy on this shirt.’ And I’m hurting, and you know, a lot of people are showing tons of support for his family, for his homeboys, and we really and truly appreciate that. It’s real love.” Stick with MTV News throughout the weekend for coverage of Nate Dogg’s memorial services. Big Sean Says Lil’ Kim Should ‘Hop On A Track With Another Big’

‘She’s one of the greatest rappers of all time, straight up,’ MC says during ‘RapFix Live’ after seeing Kim’s kind words about him. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway Big Sean on “RapFix Live” Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News Kanye West isn’t Big Sean’s only notable co-signer. During Lil’ Kim’s recent appearance on MTV News’ “RapFix Live,” one of the up-and-coming MCs she said had plenty of potential was the G.O.O.D. Music/ Def Jam artist. “There’s a new rapper. I don’t know if he’s a rock star yet, I don’t know if he’s really gotten that chance, but his name is Big Sean,” Kim told MTV News. “I like him. I think he’s dope.” It was Sean’s turn on Wednesday’s (March 23) “RapFix Live.” During his sit-down interview, the flashy Detroit rapper was humbled after seeing the video of the Queen Bee speaking highly of his talents. “That’s crazy, man,” Sean told MTV News’ Sway Calloway. “That’s a legend right there. She’s one of the greatest rappers of all time, straight up. Somebody told me that she said that, but that’s my first time actually hearing her really say that. It’s an honor. That just really goes to show me I’m just doing something right, through all the hate. Through all the people telling me, ‘Man, you’ll never do whatever, whatever, man,’ stuff like that keeps me going.” With props from Lil’ Kim, Sean said he intends to inquire about a possible collaboration with the Brooklyn rapper. “Lil’ Kim’s a real G, man,” Sean said. “She need to come holla at me. Hop on a track with another Big. … I need her phone number to hit her up.” For now, Big Sean’s debut album, Finally Famous, is due in stores May 3. Would you like to hear a Sean and Kim collabo? It’s not going to be hard to stand at attention for this Queen, if you know what I mean… And I think you do. Looking good your royal hotness, looking good.

Lil’ Kim ‘Bothered’ By Onetime Friend Diddy

‘Puffy never came to see me in prison, not one time,’ she tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil’ Kim on RapFix Live Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News Lil’ Kim has plenty to talk about besides rap nemesis Nicki Minaj. While speaking to Sway Calloway during MTV News’ “RapFix Live,” the Queen Bee talked about running with Sean “Diddy” Combs, despite never being signed to his Bad Boy Records. “Biggie did bring me to Puffy,” Kim told MTV News. “He said, ‘She’s too pretty to be rapping. Female rappers don’t look like her. What am I supposed to do with her?’ ” But apparently Diddy, who also passed on signing Junior M.A.F.I.A., had a change of heart when the Notorious B.I.G. played him Lil’ Kim’s debut album, Hardcore. Diddy insisted he be part of the album, jumping on “No Time,” Hardcore ‘s lead single, which at one point was supposed to be a remix of Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s “Get Money.” Kim went on to say that she and Diddy, who has recently worked with Nicki Minaj, no longer speak. “The only problem I had with Puffy is that you see this girl taking shots at me,” Kim said, referring to Nicki. “Even on your own record [Dirty Money’s ‘Hello Good Morning’] she took a shot at me … and you didn’t stop that? If this was me years ago, he would have been doing everything if it was somebody he was working with or had a relationship with and he got money with or whatever, he would be like, ‘That can’t go out!’ ” Kim also mentioned that, during her incarceration for federal perjury between 2005 and 2006, Diddy was nowhere to be found. “I’m bothered by his actions, because I rolled with Puffy to the bitter end, and still would have rolled with him,” Kim said. “Puffy never came to see me in prison, not one time. He didn’t write me a letter. He didn’t say, ‘Here’s a number for Kim to call,’ not one time. “Then, because of your little business situations over there with Cash Money and Rick Ross and all of them, you’re going to go see Wayne?” she continued, referring to Diddy’s surprise visit to Lil Wayne on Rikers Island last year. What Were You Thinking??? Michael Vick Cancels On Oprah

In her quest to close out Season 25 with a bang, Oprah offered Mike Vick the opportunity to solidify his comeback in America’s hearts and minds. And this fool is reneging on his acceptance of the invitation. Of all the moves Michael Vick has made, this is one of the more curious ones. He has bailed on Oprah. The Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback — the NFL’s comeback player of the year — canceled the taping of an interview (subject matter: doing time for his part in an illegal dogfighting ring, his return to the NFL, his work with the Humane Society and his future) — with the queen of gab. “After careful consideration, I will need to postpone the taping of the Oprah Winfrey interview. I admire and respect Oprah and hope to be able to participate in an interview in the future.” There’s a report out of Philly that quotes sources saying the Eagles pressured Vick to cancel. Maybe he decided it was a bad idea to do the interview so close to the Westminster dog show. Maybe it’s connected to getting the Eagles’ franchise tag. In any event, given that her show is going off the air, a rebooking might not be likely. Joe Flint of the Los Angeles Times thinks Vick is making the right move in keeping a low profile. “Going on ‘Oprah Winfrey,’ though, to be given some sort of blessing by the queen of talk is too much too soon,” Flint writes. “Part of what Vick needs to learn and show is humility, and going on a popular TV show to say look at me now is not humble.” We don’t know about that one. Crying on Oprah is NEVER a bad look for a celebrity. Source

Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson Belt Out Aretha Franklin Grammy Tribute

Martina McBride, Florence Welch and Yolanda Adams also grab solos before a special message from the Queen of Soul. By Aly Semigran Martina McBride, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson and Florence Welch perform during the 53rd annual Grammy Awards Photo: CBS At the 2011 Grammy Awards , sisters were doing it for each other. While the legendary Aretha Franklin may not have been able to attend (the 68-year-old singer underwent surgery in late 2010), some of today’s fiercest female vocalists came together to pay tribute to the Queen of Soul. Introduced by LL Cool J, a diverse quintet of “musical princesses” composed of Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride, Florence Welch and Yolanda Adams, opened the Grammy ceremony with a medley of Franklin tunes, kicking things off with the timeless “(You Me Make Feel Like A) Natural Woman,” which they all sang on together. Check out pictures from the Grammy show here. From there on, each powerhouse performer did her own solo as the other four provided backup harmonies, all while images of the indelible Franklin appeared in the background. Aguilera, fresh off last weekend’s now-notorious Super Bowl national anthem mishap, didn’t miss a beat (or lyric, for that matter) of Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way,” which segued to country superstar McBride’s cover of “Until You Come Back to Me.” Welch, whose band Florence and the Machine are vying for Best New Artist this year, took over the duties of singing the classic “Think (Freedom).” Then Hudson belted out the unrequited feminism anthem “Respect.” Adams brought her gospel sound to the song “Spirit in the Dark” before all five women closed out with “Sisters Are Doing It for Themselves,” bringing the Grammy crowd to their feet. After the performance, Franklin appeared via a video message in which she thanked Aguilera, Hudson, McBride, Welch and Adams, telling them, “I love you all.” Standing before a piano in a white dress, the still-recovering Franklin went on to thank Clive Davis, Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich, and all the well-wishers who sent her cards, flowers and “most, importantly, your prayers.” “I wish I could have been there with all of you tonight,” Franklin said, adding she hoped to be in attendance next year. After wishing the 2011 Grammy nominees good luck, Franklin concluded, “Thank you so much. I love you all. Have a good evening.” For Grammy Awards winners list, analysis, interviews, fashion and more, stick with MTV News during the big show and beyond.
