R.I.P: Donald M. Payne, First African-American Elected To House Of Representatives From New Jersey Dies Of Colon Cancer

We lost another good one y’all. Rep. Donald M. Payne, a Democrat from New Jersey, has died, his Congressional office said in a statement Tuesday. He was 77. Payne was serving his twelfth term in the U.S. Congress, making him one of the longest-serving members of New Jersey’s congressional delegation. In its statement, Payne’s office said the congressman died of complications from colon cancer. Payne announced to his constituents in February he was battling the disease. “New Jersey has lost a noble public servant, and the world has lost an amazing human being,” Payne’s office wrote. “Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Rep. Payne have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor.” In a statement, President Barack Obama said Payne “lived a full and meaningful life.” “Don will be missed, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time,” Obama’s statement read. Payne was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1934, according to a biography on his Congressional website. He was the first African-American to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from New Jersey, and served as the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, a non-profit educational group. In the House, Payne served on the Education and Workforce and Foreign Affairs committees. Among his achievements was founding the Malaria Caucus with former first lady Laura Bush, and helping secure funding to battle other diseases afflicting countries in Africa. He was also recognized for his support of legislation promoting peace in Northern Ireland, and for passing a resolution declaring genocide in Darfur, Sudan. He graduated from Seton Hall University, and held honorary degrees from a number of colleges and universities. Payne’s biography notes he is a widower and a father of three. He will truly be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. R.I.P. to Donald M. Payne Source Photo Credit: Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call More On Bossip! Star Wars Concept Artist Ralph McQuarrie Dead at 82

“Ralph McQuarrie was the first person I hired to help me envision Star Wars . His genial contribution, in the form of unequaled production paintings, propelled and inspired all of the cast and crew of the original Star Wars trilogy. When words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph’s fabulous illustrations and say, ‘Do it like this.'” [via WSJ ]

Gone But Never Forgotten: Whitney Houston Graces The Cover Of Essence Magazine

Essence Magazine pays homage to Whitney Houston by placing her on the cover of their April issue… Whitney had “The Voice”. Before the term was even coined and show was ever thought of: When she burst onto the scene in 1985, her self-titled album sold 10 million copies in the U.S. alone. With her second album, Whitney, she became the first woman to enter the Billboard album charts at number one. Whether singing sophisticated pop ballads or soul-stirring gospel, her songs moved us to dance and to tears. Her unparalleled talent influenced an entire generation of young performers: Mariah. Beyoncé. Christina. Alicia. To millions she was pop royalty. But to those who knew her and loved her, she was the girl from Newark who was blessed with one of the greatest musical instruments of our time. Will you be picking up the April issue? A Lil Positivity: Bernie Mac Gets A Street Named After Him In Chicago

Bernie Mac gets his just due. A sign bearing the name of the late comedian Bernie Mac has been raised over a street in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood. About 200 people, including his widow Rhoda McCullough, daughter Je’Niece McCullough and the Rev. Jesse Jackson, gathered Tuesday on a corner near the home where he grew up. Je’Niece McCullough says she hopes renaming the street Bernie Mac Street reminds people “they can do whatever they want to do in life.” Mac, born Bernard McCullough, died in August 2008 at age 50 from pneumonia complications, after suffering from sarcoidosis, an autoimmune disease. To celebrate, we’re all going to the kitchen and grab some milk and coooookies. R.I.P. to the great. Pic via WENN More On Bossip!
