DuShon Monique Brown Dies; Chicago Fire Star Was 49

Tragic news today out of the world of television: DuShon Monique Brown, a veteran actress who had been a series regular on Chicago Fire since the inception of the NBC drama, has died of an apparent heart attack. She was 49 years old. Production sources tell TMZ that Brown admitted herself to an Illinois hospital a few days ago after suffering chest pains; she was reportedly tested at the time and then released. But things then took a drastic and deadly turn on Friday. The actress suffered some kind of cardiac episode and was found dead inside her home in Chicago. The NBC star was a native of The Windy City who had portrayed Connie, the assistant to Chef Boden, since the very first episode of Chicago Fire. She also appeared on Prison Break from 2005 through 2007. Television fans may also recognize Brown from stints on Empire and Shameless. Said Chicago Fire producer Dick Wolf upon learning of Brown’s stunning and untimely passing: “The Chicago Fire family is devastated to lose one of its own. Our thought and prayers are with DuShon’s family and we will all miss her.” Along with her acting career, Brown had a background in social work and a Masters in Counseling. She once worked as a counselor at a local high school. According to her IMDB page, she was also an accomplished violinist who played with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. This same page lists a few other facts about the late star. To wit: – Her nickname was “shoo-shoo.” – She attended the same high school as Michelle Obama. – Her mom is a retired social worker and her dad is a retired math teacher. – She inspired to perform after seeing the film version of The WIZ at age seven. Most importantly, and sadly, she leaves behind a daughter named Zoe, who actually appeared with her mother in a 2007 Super Bowl commercial for Frito Lay. It’s unknown at this time just how Chicago Fire will wrote Brown’s character out of the series. It’s also matters very little at the moment. Our thoughts go out to the actress’ friends, family members and loved ones. May DuShon Monique Brown rest in peace. Demi Lovato Celebrates 6 Years of Sobriety, Reveals Encounter With "B-tchy" Celebrity

At just 25, Demi Lovato has enjoyed higher highs and endured lower lows than most people will experience in a lifetime. The singer rose to fame while still in her teens, but the pressures of such sudden success quickly took a toll. Lovato’s struggles with addiction could have cost her career – and so much more. But at her lowest point, Demi was strong enough to seek help, and that has made all the difference. These days,  Lovato is sober , and her music is more popular than ever. More importantly, however, Demi is happy, healthy, and willing to publicly share the details of her painful struggle in hopes of helping others. Earlier this week, Demi marked another year of clean living, and she celebrated the occasion on social media: “Just officially turned 6 years sober,” Lovato tweeted. “So grateful for another year of joy, health and happiness. It IS possible.  While Lovato maintains that the decision to get sober was the most important one she’s ever made, she admits that she still struggles from time to time. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight , Demi revealed that she came dangerously close to falling off the wagon at the 2016 Met Gala . “I had a terrible experience,” Lovato recalls. “This one celebrity was a complete b-tch and was miserable to be around. It was very cliquey. I remember being so uncomfortable that I wanted to drink.” Demi says the experience was an eye-opening one that caused her to realize she has more in common with fellow former addicts than she does with many of her fellow celebs: “I changed my clothes, but I still had my diamonds on — millions of dollars of diamonds on in an AA meeting,” she adds. “And I related more to the homeless people in that meeting who struggled with the same struggles that I deal with than the people at the Met Gala.” Lovato says it’s no exaggeration to say that her sobriety is quite literally a matter of life and death, “What keeps me on this path is there’s a drive that I have to stay sober because I know that my life depends on it,” she tells ET. “If I would have continued down that road, I don’t know if I’d be here today.” Well, her loved ones and her millions of fans are certainly glad she chose a different path before it was too late. Our sincere congrats go out to Demi on the achievement of a lifetime. View Slideshow: Demi Lovato: 19 Candid Confessions from Her Documentary

Louise Slaughter Dies; Trailblazing Congresswoman Was 88

The House of Representatives has lost one of its most its most courageous voices. New York Rep. Louise Slaughter has passed away at the age of 88. Slaughter had been hospitalized since being injured in a fall at her home last week. She was the oldest sitting member of Congress. News of Slaughter’s death was confirmed today by her chief of staff Liam Fitzsimmons. “To have met Louise Slaughter is to have known a force of nature,” Fitzsimmons said in a statement issued to several media outlets. Indeed, Slaughter was a true rarity in the House of Representatives – a stalwart ideologue and shrewd negotiator who was also beloved by her colleagues on both sides of the aisle. First elected to represent New York’s 25th congressional district in 1986, Slaughter played key roles in shaping several hstoric pieces of legislation. She co-authored the Violence Against Women Act in 1994, but she might be best remembered for her role in helping to build congressional support for Obamacase as Rules Committee chairwoman in 2010. Slaughter was a longtime ally of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who paid tribute to her late friend in a statement issued moments ago: “With her passing, the Congressional community has lost a beloved leader and a cherished friend,” Pelosi said. “Her strong example inspired countless young women to know their power, and seek their rightful place at the head of the decision-making table.” Speaker of the House Paul Ryan ordered the flags above the Capitol Building lowered to half mast in Slaughter’s honor: “She was unrelenting in fighting for her ideas and the people back home in Western New York,” Ryan said today. “But really, the thing that I keep coming back to is how she was tough, but unfailingly gracious. She was simply great.” In the hours since the congresswoman’s death, Slaughter’s name has become a trending topic on Twitter thanks to thousands of heartfelt tributes from colleagues and admirers from all over the political spectrum. Jill Duggar: Is She Questioning Her Faith In God?!

Essentially, the Duggars are famous for two things – being very fertile and being very religious. The two conditions are inextricably linked, of course, as only people who believe they’ll go to eternal hell if they use condoms would subject themselves to the temporary hell of raising 19 children. Just kidding, Duggars! Anyway, it seems Jill Duggar is proving to be an unexpected rebel in more ways than one. Not only has she yet to sire an entire baseball team’s worth of children (complete with full pitching staff and designated hitters), but fans think she might be turning her back on her faith. In a recent Instagram post, Jill revealed that she’s currently reading a book with the rather ambitious title of The Story of Reality . “Wow! I’m not even finished with this book yet and it’s so good! Just read chapters 13-15 today. If you’ve ever wondered #whydoesgodallowsuffering or you’ve stopped believing in God then you’ve gotta read this book!” Jill wrote. “I could never give up on God, our father,” one user wrote, apparently under the impression that Jill was questioning her faith. “He is the reason we are all here, on the earth he made. You just need to remember to believe in him.” At one point a user who identified herself as an atheist congratulated Jill on opening herself up to new ideas. Needless to say, the situation threw some of Jill’s more pious followers for a loop. “This is a Christian book and how everything in the world ties in with God. People are making ignorant assumptions and haven’t even bothered to learn what this book is about,” one user argued. Indeed, according to a description on the book’s Amazon page, The Story of Reality makes an argument for “Christianity as a true story of how the world began.” So relax, folks – it appears that Jill has no intention of deviating from the belief system she was raised with. But that’s not stopping the debate from raging on Jill’s Instagram page. For some of her followers, the most interesting part of Jill’s latest post has nothing to do with her beliefs, and everything to do with to do the most compelling word in the book’s title – reality. When Derick Dillard attacked Jazz Jennings on Twitter, he launched his tirade by accusing the teen of starring in “a reality show that promotes an unreality.” Derick was fired by TLC for his harassment, and some former fans couldn’t resist the opportunity to remind Jill of her family’s latest scandal: “The Reality is that your homophobic husband got fired from the show! Perfect outcome!” wrote one IG user. Watch Counting On online for more of the Duggars’ take on reality. View Slideshow: Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard Photos

Reg E. Cathey Dies; Veteran Actor Was 59 Years Old

Reg E. Cathey, a veteran actor likely best known to television fans for roles in House of Cards and The Wire, died this week from lung cancer. He was 59 years old. According to TMZ sources, Cathey was surrounded by friends, family members and loved ones at the time of his passing, which took place at his home in New York. It’s unclear at the moment for how long Cathey had been battling his illness. The Wire creator David Simon confirmed Cathey’s death on Twitter, leaving the following statement along with a photo of the veteran star: Reg Cathey, 1958-2018.  Not only a fine, masterful actor — but simply one of the most delightful human beings with whom I ever shared some long days on set. On wit alone, he could double any man over and leave him thinking. Reg, your memory is a great blessing. Cathey was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series in 2014, 2015 and 2016, each time for his portrayal Freddy Hayes on HBO’s House of Cards. The character was the owner of a rib restaurant that provided the Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood a sanctuary and secret hideout. He won this Emmy Award in 2015. On Season 4 of The Wire – generally considered to be the legendary drama’s best – he played Norman Wilson, a reporter-turned-political operative who consulted with Tommy Carcetti as the latter quickly rose to prominence up in Maryland politics. Cathey also played a part on The Corner, Simon’s predecessor to The Wire on HBO. A native of Alabama, Cathey’s big screen resume included roles in Fantastic Four and Se7en. In response to this sad news, House of Cards creator Beau Willimon said the following on Friday evening: Reg Cathey was one of a kind. Brimming with life force, generosity, humor, gravitas and a fountain of talent. Loved by everyone lucky enough know him and work with him. He will be greatly missed. Rest In Peace, Reg. Having been in the business for so long, Cathey was mourned on social media by a wide range of actors from both the TV and movie worlds. To wit… Mike Colter : Go gentle into that good night my brother. It was an honor spending time with you on set. Getting to know you as a person and an artist. You will be missed. Condolences to your family. I salute you. Michael McKean : Reg Cathey was my friend and my wife’s friend and a great actor. I am very very sad. RIP, Reg.
