The name Anthony Armstrong-Jones may no longer be widely recognized on this side of the pond, but there was a time when the Earl of Snowdon was a tabloid fixture with as firm a grip on the public’s imagination as the most scandalous stars of today. The husband of Queen Elizabeth II’s sister, Princess Margaret, Snowdon lived out loud in a fashion that scandalized the royals and helped define the hedonistic zeitgeist of the Swinging Sixties. A photographer, filmmaker and unabashed bohemian, Snowdon captivated Britons when he married Margaret in 1960, and his status as a relatable commoner amongst royals has earned him comparisons to Princess Diana. At first, Snowdon’s freewheeling lifestyle made him a perfect fit for the rebellious Margaret, and the British press fell in love with the young couple that was so unlike the more sedate Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Eventually, however, Snowdon’s appetite for promiscuous sex (with women and men alike), hard-partying, and hob-nobbing with his era’s biggest celebrities put a strain on his marriage, and he and Margaret divorced in 1978. In the years that followed, Snowdon was lauded for his discretion, turning down lucrative offers to pen a tell-all about his time as a royal in-law. Eventually, however, the more lurid details of his wild life and times came to light: Snowdon lived a life of extremes, at once both highly ambitious and accomplished (In addition to his artistic achievements, he received a patent for an electric wheelchair that he invented in 1971.), and given over to debauched behavior that’s shocking by today’s standards, let alone the stuffy mores of England in the early ’60s. One of the more recent gossip items about his personal life came to light in 2008, when Snowdon admitted to fathering a daughter out of wedlock just months before marrying Princess Margaret. The child – conceived during an alcohol and amyl-nitrate-fueled threesome – was born while Armstrong-Jones was on his honeymoon with Princess Margaret. It was only when she was in her late forties that the woman learned Snowdon was her father via a DNA test. Just months after his marriage to Margaret ended, Snowdon married Lucy Lindsay Hogg, who gave birth to his daughter, Frances, in 1979. Margaret never remarried, and died of a stroke in 2002. Though he’ll likely be best remembered for his involvement with the royals and his decadent lifestyle, those who followed Snowdon’s career say that he had a tremendous impact on the arts scene in London throughout his multi-decade career. The many famous subjects who sat for photo sessions with Snowdon say his charisma, warmth, and sense of humor made for a relaxed environment that resulted in uniquely intimate images. Sources say he passed away peacefully at home. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Passed Away in 2016: Gone, But Not Forgotten

On December 23, the entertainment world was stunned by the news that iconic actress and writer Carrie Fisher had suffered a heart attack while aboard a flight. Four days later, Fisher passed away , marking an end to both a remarkable career and a frequently turbulent life. In an almost unbelievably heartbreaking coda to a year defined by loss, Fisher’s mother, the entertainment legend Debbie Reynolds, died just one day after her daughter’s passing. Now, in a fitting tribute to a mother and daughter who were so often inseparable in life, Fisher and Reynolds will reportedly be laid to rest in a joint memorial service. “I think this is what they would have wanted” a source close to the family tells TMZ. The idea for a joint service was reportedly inspired by Reynolds’ last words, “I want to be with Carrie.” Insiders say mother and daughter will be honored at both a small, private ceremony for family and friends, and a larger, more public memorial service at which fans can pay their respects. The relationship between Reynolds and Fisher was often turbulent, but those who knew the screen icons best say their many ups and downs only brought them closer. Fisher’s relationship with her mother inspired many of her autobiographical writings, including the fictionalized account of her family life, Postcards From the Edge . The novel was later adapted into a film, with Meryl Streep playing the character based on Fisher, and Reynolds’ surrogate being portrayed by Shirley MacLaine. Both Fisher and Reynolds spoke openly about their relationship, often providing a hopeful example to other families who had been affected by divorce, mental illness, and addiction: “There have been a few times when I thought I was going to lose Carrie,” Reynolds memorably told Oprah Winfrey in 2011. “I’ve had to walk through a lot of my tears. But she’s worth it.” For better or worse, the relationship between Reynolds and Fisher was a frequent source of public interest, and a dual funeral seems the perfect way to remind the world that while both women experienced countless roadblocks in life, their paths always led them back to each other. Insiders say further details regarding Reynolds’ and Fisher’s memorials will be released this week, View Slideshow: Carrie Fisher: Mourned, Honored by Hollywood
Tricia Lynn McCauley, a Washington D.C. yoga instructor and former actress best known for her role in the 2006 film Step Up, has been found dead. She was 46 years old. McCauley was reporting missing on Christmas Day. Her brother later confirmed his family’s worst news on Tuesday morning via Facebook, writing that Tricia’s body had been found. Area police officials then held a news conference shortly afterward and also announced the sad news that McCauley was killed. According to reports, McCauley raised the concerned of her loved ones after she didn’t show up for Christmas dinner on Sunday. McCauley had last been seen in the 2000 block of North Capitol Street NW at approximately 4:30 that same afternoon. Her corpse was discovered around midnight insider her car, and there are signs that she was killed in a carjacking. Authorities, however, have not yet confirmed the details surrounding this death, though we do know how it was discovered. An Advisory Neighborhood Commissions commissioner says officers initiated a stop on her vehicle and found McCauley’s body inside. That took place early this morning. Police took the driver into custody, who appeared to match the description of the person of interest who cops say may have been operating the missing car. Police say the suspect was also wanted in conjunction with a robbery at a CVS in D.C. yesterday, during which he allegedly assaulted store employees. McCauley’s brother wrote on Facebook earlier: “Tricia is gone, they have found her body.” “Thank you all for your work, support and love.” “To all of her DC family, I know she truly thought of you that way, thank you for being there for her all these years. Hang on to each other.” McCauley appeared in Step Up (mostly as the stand-in for Jenna Dewan), The Paper Girl and a short film in 2012 titled “Never Dream: The Beginning.” Following her brief acting career, McCauley also became pretty well-known in the D.C. area in a different profession – as a yoga instructor. “Let me express on behalf of all of us in Washington D.C. our deepest condolences to her family,” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said at the press conference. She’s not a huge name celebrity, but she had a family and friends and loved ones, and like so many others, she will be truly missed.
