Harper Lee Dies; To Kill a Mockingbird Author Was 89

Harper Lee – the author best known for the iconic 1960 novel To Kill a Mockingbird – has passed away at the age of 89. A county coroner confirmed today that Lee passed away at an assisted living facility in Monroeville – the small Alabama town that she called home throughout most of her life. In addition to winning the Pulitzer Prize and serving as the basis of a classic film, To Kill a Mockingbird  has become a perennial favorite in both classrooms and bookstores. Astonishingly, 56 years after its publication, the book still sells over one million copies every year. The book’s themes of racial injustice and the importance of aiding the oppressed have helped it remain continuously relevant – and widely beloved – throughout several generations. Lee was a lifelong friend of author Truman Capote (the character of Dill in Mockingbird  is based on a young Capote) and she assisted him in researching his famous “non-fiction novel” In Cold Blood . Despite spending much of her life avoiding the spotlight, Lee made headlines last year with the news that a sequel to Mockingbird entitled  Go Set a Watchman  would be released several decades after it was penned. The controversial novel became an instant bestseller. Lee never married or had children, but she was fiercely beloved by the people of Monroeville – the tiny town that helped inspire one of the great literary works of the 20th Century. R.I.P.: 80’s Sensation Vanity Passes Away At Age 57

Denise Katrina Matthews, Known As ‘Vanity,’ Dead At 57 Another musical legend has passed away . Denise Katrina Matthews, best known by her stage name ‘Vanity,’ has passed away at age 57 due to complications from a medical condition . Via TMZ : Vanity, lead singer of the ’80s girl group Vanity 6, has died after years of battling kidney failure and, more recently, an abdominal illness. Vanity, whose real name was Denise Katrina Matthews, passed away in a Fremont, CA hospital on Monday … according to sources close to her family. A few months ago she set up a GoFundMe page, and said she’d been diagnosed with sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis — an inflammation of the small intestines. She also battled crack addiction in the ’90s, and after a 1994 OD her kidneys were shot. She had to undergo nearly daily dialysis treatments. Vanity’s biggest hit came in 1982 with “Nasty Girl” … a song produced by Prince. The group toured with Prince on his 1999 tour, but she quit right after that. She went on to sign a solo record deal with Motown, and starred in movies like “The Last Dragon” and “Action Jackson.” She eventually ditched Hollywood, quit drugs and became a born-again Christian in the mid ’90s. She remained active in her local church up until her death. We’re told she was in church on Saturday evening and told the congregation she was “ready to go home.” So sad. She will be truly missed. Viola Beach Members ALL Killed in Horrific Car Crash

Tragedy has struck the world of music. All four members of the British band Viola Beach were killed in a car accident on Saturday, according to The Associated Press. The musicians – Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe and Jack Dakin, all aged between 19 and 32 – were traveling in a rental car near Stockholm, Sweden when they crashed through a barrier set up to prevent vehicles from crossing an opening drawbridge. The vehicle reportedly fell more than 80 feet into a canal, killing all four group members and manager Craig Tarry. It was Tarry’s family, via Britain’s Foreign Office, that confirmed this horrible news. “Craig was a warm, loving person who had worked tirelessly to achieve success and follow his dreams within the music industry,” their statement reads. The band itself had performed at the Where is the Music? festival on Friday and was traveling back to Guildford, England when the crash took place. “Our deepest sympathy to the family’s and friends of #ViolaBeach today. So so sad. Our thoughts and prayers are with you,” Tweeted The Script in response to the news. A spokeswoman for the U.K.’s Foreign Office tells CNN that British officials are “in contact with Swedish authorities and supporting the families at this very difficult time,” while trying to get to the bottom of what happened. We send our condolences to the loved ones of Viola Beach. View Slideshow: 24 Musicians Who Died Too Young

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia Passes Away At 79

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia Dies At Age 79 Conservative Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who voted against Obamacare, same-sex gay marriage and said affirmative action sends black students to schools “too advanced” for them , has peacefully passed away at age 79 while in Texas for a visit. Scalia told friends he wasn’t feeling well Friday night before going to sleep and never waking up. Per CNN : U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, a leading conservative voice on the high court, has died at the age of 79, a government source and a family friend told CNN on Saturday. Scalia died in his sleep during a visit to Texas. A government official said Scalia went to bed Friday night and told friends he wasn’t feeling well. He didn’t get up for breakfast on Saturday morning, and the group he was with for a hunting trip left without him. Someone at the ranch went in to check on him and found him unresponsive. The U.S. Marshals Service is helping to arrange for his body to be returned to his home in McLean, Virginia, an official told CNN, not to investigate his death. They were already present because marshals sometimes help supplement security for traveling justices. In a statement, Chief Justice John Roberts said he and other justices were saddened to hear of Scalia’s passing. “He was an extraordinary individual and jurist, admired and treasured by his colleagues,” Roberts said. “His passing is a great loss to the court and the country he so loyally served. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Maureen and his family.” Now the issue is whether President Obama will nominate his replacement (in an election year), or swill he let the next president decide. Sources tell CNN he plans to nominate a replacement.

BOSSIP Exclusive – More Family Drama: Bobbi Kristina’s Estate Sues Aunt Pat Houston And Grandma Cissy Houston!!

Administrator Bedelia Hargrove Sued Pat & Cissy Houston For Not Paying Costs To Run Estate Exactly four years after Whitney Houston’s death, infighting between the administrator of daughter Bobbi Kristina’s estate and her relatives are threatening to run Brown’s estate into the ground. That’s according to Brown’s estate administrator Bedelia Hargrove, who sued Cissy and Pat Houston Feb. 4 for “breach of duty,” for not doling out money from Brown’s trust to fund the cost of operating her estate, BOSSIP has learned. The trust is supposed to pay Brown’s estate expenses, and the Houstons, as co-trustees, have to sign off on any money coming in or going out. Hargrove said in her complaint that she’s asked Pat and Cissy several times to release the money, but the pair won’t budge. We’ve reached out to Pat for comment, but BOSSIP’s efforts to reach Cissy weren’t successful. “The respondents, jointly and severally, have committed a breach of trust by failing to pay any expenses of administration of estate after proper and repeated demands by the petitioner,” Hargrove wrote in the suit filed in Fulton County Superior Court. “To date, the respondents have failed and refused to pay any expenses of administration of the estate after proper and repeated demands from the petitioner,” Hargrove added.

That s#!t cray. Via NYDailyNews The man arrested for bringing two guns to Disneyland Paris said he packed the weapons to protect himself. The unidentified 28-year-old European told police he brought the pair of low-caliber handguns to the next-door New York Hotel Thursday because he “feared for his safety,” AFP reported. Cops did not elaborate on the man’s comments. While the gun incident does not seem to be rooted in terrorism, police are still looking for the man’s girlfriend: Police detained a female suspect Thursday, but later admitted they nabbed the wrong woman. The man’s bag tipped security alarms when it went through the Disney-owned hotel’s X-ray machine Thursday, park officials said. Guards found the weapons, plus a box of ammo and a Koran in the suitcase, and immediately called cops. Smh.
