If you’re anything like us, the 4th of July holiday was met with mixed emotions. But things were particularly tough for a black professor and blogger who experienced racism firsthand on the plane ride home to Louisiana for the holiday weekend. Brittney Cooper shared her story via Salon.com , which we’ve excerpted below: As we boarded, I noticed that this mom and I would be sitting in the same row, I in the window seat, she in the center. As we sat awaiting takeoff, I finished a text conversation and signaled to the flight attendant for a seat-belt extender, a fat passenger’s best friend. Then just as the call came to shut our phones off, I glanced over at her, and she was still texting, rapidly. I caught a few words of the end of her text that made me look more intently: “on the plane, sitting thigh to thigh with a big fat n***er. Lucky me.” Immediately I was hyper-aware – looking around, feeling marked, wondering if others find my large, dark-skinned body as distasteful as my seatmate did. Even so, I was acutely aware, at least intellectually, that the problem lay with her and not me. But what would my recourse be. Though she was no toothpick herself, she is a white lady, a mom, with children and a husband – all the trappings of American middle-class respectability. Moreover, she sent those words in a private text communication. I am a fat, dark-skinned black woman. Had I gone off and set it off as she deserved, in all probability I would have been seen as the terrorist threat. Especially on the eve of the Fourth of July. I started by sharing her words in a status update on Facebook — in part because in recent days, I have seen one too many friends, both black and white, readily defending Paula Deen, and arguing that her use of the N-word was an understandable byproduct of her Southern roots and most assuredly a relic of a bygone era. However, as far as I could tell, this young family, in which the parents looked to be mid- to late 30s, were Northerners. So after waiting awhile and getting a handle on the tears that started coming steadily after I saw her words, I simply got her attention and asked her to read the Facebook status from my smartphone. She saw it, kind of grunted her assent, and then said nothing. So I pressed forward, in a low voice: “I just want to let you know that your words were hurtful. And I hope you don’t pass that kind of ignorance down to your beautiful boys.” She replied curtly, “I don’t.” What would you have done if you were Brittney?
Report Shows Most Americans Believe Blacks Are More Racist Than Whites Are black folks really more racist than whites ??? Via Washington Times: Americans, by and large, see blacks as more racist than whites or Hispanics, a new survey said on Wednesday. But political ideology plays a large role in the findings, Rasmussen Reports said. Rasmussen found in its national telephone survey that 37 percent of U.S. adults believe blacks are racist, compared to 15 percent and 18 percent regarding whites and Hispanics, respectively, as racist. The report stipulated that the respondents were asked about ethnic groups in America, not around the world. Break down the survey by ideology, however, and the numbers are radically different. About 49 percent of conservative Americans consider blacks the most racist ethnic group, while 12 percent regard whites the most racist. And about 27 percent of liberal Americans saw whites as the most racist, and 21 percent, blacks. By political party: 49 percent of Republicans say blacks are the most racist; 29 percent of Democrats agree; and so do 36 percent of “unaffiliated” respondents. Rasmussen said: “Among black Americans, 31 percent think most blacks are racist, while 24 percent consider most whites racist and 15 percent view most Hispanics that way. Among white adults, 10 percent think most white Americans are racist, 38 percent believe most blacks are racist and 17 percent say most Hispanics are racist.” In general, only 30 percent of all Americans believe race relations in the United States are good or excellent, the survey found. MasterChef Contestant Krissi Biasielle Under Fire For Openly Racist Comments Yet another white female in the culinary arts industry is coming under fire for racists comments aimed at black people. And while Paula Deen certainly did the most with her mouthpiece, she doesn’t have anything on MasterChef contestant Krissi Biasiello. via THG Krissi Biasiello may have gone Paula Deen all over Twitter in a pair of ridiculously racist Tweets last year. The Philadelphia Daily News has unearthed a pair of messages allegedly sent from an account previously run by this MasterChef contestant – and they make Deen look like Gandi by comparison. “Why do the 76ers keep coming up in my who to follow,” reads one. “i HATE basketball. NBA = N*ggers Bouncing Around #thatsracist.” Last July, meanwhile, in response to an online poll about sexual habits, Biasiello supposedly wrote: “Better make sure you’re on top when sleeping with a black guy… Otherwise it’s probably rape.” Yeah. Wow. There’s nothing more that needs to be said about those. The account behind these Tweets (@KrissiLoud) has been deleted and Biasiello now writes from @MC4Krissi. No word yet from Fox or anyone at MasterChef regarding these messages and any action that may or may not be taken against Krissi. But get this … even though the book wasn’t set to come out until October, it’s already #1 on Amazon with pre-order sales. Ballantine adds its name to the long list of companies abandoning ship in light of Deen’s n-word controversy … The Food Network, QVC, JCPenny, and Smithfield Hams, etc … This fat broad’s books aren’t the only things that won’t be selling anymore.. Paula Deen’s officially the least popular kid on the playground … JCPenney just severed ties with the celebrity chef in the wake of her n-word scandal. A rep for the department store released a statement today, saying, “We can confirm that jcpenney has decided to discontinue selling Paula Deen branded merchandise.” JCP had sold Deen-brand kitchen products … which is good news for Martha Stewart. G-Dubuhya has some explaining to do… G.W. Bush Ancestor Revealed As Vicious Slave Trader A recent delve into the family tree of former U.S. President George W. Bush has revealed some disturbing but not surprising information about his shady ancestors, who were apparently at the head of a brutal slave trading business. via MSN Now Here’s some Bush family news: A direct ancestor of both George H.W. and George W. Bush was a notorious slave trader, according to new historical reports. While at least 25 U.S. presidents have been descendants of slave owners (and 12 of them owners themselves), Thomas “Beau” Walker, Dubya’s great-great-great-great-grandfather by his father’s mother, reportedly went well beyond owning. According to genealogical findings, Walker was a slave ship captain involved in at least 11 slave-trading West African voyages between 1784 and 1792. Walker, called an “inhuman monster” by one British anti-slavery activist, died in 1797 when the crew on one of his vessels mutinied, killing him and throwing his body overboard. The Bush family hasn’t commented yet on these findings. Welp, now we don’t have to wonder G.W.’s unparalleled sense of “IDGAF” towards black people comes from. Are Republicans to blame for minorities being stuck in poverty? Minorities Remain In Poverty While GOP Refuses To Increase Minimun Wage Republicans have found yet another way to indirectly have a negative impact on the lives of thousands of minorities, as new reports show that the GOP’s refusal to approve the proposed minimum wage increase is keeping at least 300,000 people of color living in poverty. via Think Progress Three and a half million people of color would be lifted out of poverty if Congress raised the minimum wage to $10.10, according to a new report from the restaurant workers’ group ROC United. They would be the majority of the six million people overall who would be lifted out of poverty. People of color are far more likely to work minimum wage jobs, as they represent 42 percent of those earners even though they make up just 32 percent of the workforce. That big number is in large part thanks to the overrepresentation of people of color in low-wage restaurant industry jobs. Over 500,000 of those lifted out of poverty by a raise in the minimum wage would be restaurant workers, 300,000 of whom would be workers of color. Restaurants are the single largest employer of people of color, but they are disproportionately concentrated in the lowest paying positions. As the report notes, “Two of the lowest-paying jobs, dishwashers and fast food preps and cooks, are 59% and 35% people of color, and earn a median wage of $8.78 and $8.85, respectively.” Forty percent of tipped workers — who make an even lower minimum wage of $2.13 — are people of color. The people of color who hold these jobs are also more likely to live in poverty. They make up more than half of tipped workers and restaurant workers with incomes below the poverty line. There’s no doubt that the Republican party is hardly interested in improving the lives of minorities, as they continue to prove, but do you think they are to blame for this abundant amount of people of color living in ‘poverty’ by our society’s standards.
