Trayvon Martin’s Mother Says She Wants Justic For Her Son In 2013 With all of the other unfortunate tragedies that occurred this year, some may have forgotten about the 17-year-old unarmed boy who lost his life onthe the way home from the store at the hands of self-appointed neighborhood watch man dog George Zimmerman who gunned down the teenager following a brief altercation. But Trayvon Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton is still living the nightmare of losing a child….and still seeking justice for her slain son. She recently reached out to Essence magazine to share her grief, her joy and her tireless pursuit of justice. via Essence This year has been bittersweet. The bitter part is that I lost my baby boy. The sweet part has been the show of support that we have received from our community and from the world. We are thankful. Trayvon would have turned 18 this coming February and would have been graduating from high school. He had just turned 17 a few days before he was killed. I remember how much he was looking forward to senior picture day. I won’t ever get a chance see those moments; to see his high school graduation picture, his prom pictures, his wedding pictures. I won’t get that experience. It’s still difficult to swallow because Trayvon had his whole life ahead of him. Seventeen years just seems so short to me, but I do thank God for the time that he did give me with him. I want justice in 2013. The trial begins in June and we want Trayvon’s murderer held accountable for what he did. This was a murder. This was not a case of Stand Your Ground or self-defense. One of the things Tracy [Trayvon’s father] and I have done is take a negative and make it positive. We want to try and engage the political process with the Change for Trayvon campaign to encourage people around the country to get involved and vote to help revise these Stand Your Ground laws. And the dummies targeted a white family! Somebody was not in the Christmas spirit when they vandalized an injured Marine’s home in Illinois with racist graffiti . Via NY Daily News reports : Marine Chris Van Etten, who lost both legs in Afghanistan, returned to his family’s Illinois home just in time for the holidays, after spending half a year at a Californian rehabilitation center. But the injured lance corporal received a message Christmas Eve that was not very merry. Someone spray-painted racial slurs on and threw raw eggs at the Van Etten’s house, likely as the family slept. The offensive language found in the graffiti is usually used to disparage African-Americans. But something does not add up, however, because the Van Etten family is Caucasian, explained O’Fallon police Capt. Mark Berry. Nevertheless, Van Etten’s mother is upset that anyone would vandalize the house with such hateful messages. “There`s not a hateful bone in my body. So to have what was spray-painted, it hurts,” Janet Leigh told Fox-affiliate KTVI. “And it hurts that it was now. It’s such a joyous occasion. Not that it’s changed it any, but it still kind of put a little bit of a damper on it to wake up one morning (and) have that there so randomly and so hurtfully.” But she is trying to focus on how lucky she feels that her son was even alive for Christmas. “I’m very fortunate,” she said. “I remember the few moments I thought he was actually dead. And to have him be alive to only have it be his legs after everything I have seen the last six months. We’re blessed.” Van Etten was critically injured from a roadside bomb explosion — which killed his best friend. Lance Cpl. T.J. Baune from Minnesota — while on night patrol June 13. This just goes to show how crazy people are. Congratulations to the Van Etten family on getting their son home safely. We gon’ make it Study Show Black Voter Turnout Higher Than White In 2012 Election Via MSNBC It looks like the GOP’s plan to suppress liberal-skewed voters backfired. The 2012 presidential election may have been the first time blacks voted at a higher rate than whites, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center—despite several Republican-controlled state legislatures passing new voter identification laws. African-Americans made up 12% of the eligible electorate this year, yet they accounted for 13% of total votes cast. This is the second presidential election in a row in which black voters “over-performed” (they did so in 2008 by the same proportion). Whites’ turnout rate—votes cast as a share of eligible voters—declined in both 2012 and 2008, though whites’ share of the eligible electorate is also shrinking. Whereas other minority groups have seen increased electoral clout largely because of population growth, blacks’ growing share of the vote in recent presidential elections is due to mounting turnout rates. More hispanics and Asian-Americans voted in 2012 than ever before, but their turnout rates continue to lag behind that of the general public. That’s amazing considering the trouble that some GOP’ers went through to ensure that “we” wouldn’t show up in November. In the year leading up to the election, many GOP-led state governments attempted to pass bills aimed at requiring photo identification at the polls, restricting early voting, and curtailing voter registration efforts. Many black community leaders argued such voter suppression would disproportionately disenfranchise poor, minority, and elderly voters. While some Republicans claimed the measures were necessary to prevent voter fraud, others outwardly admitted to passing voter restrictions in hopes of hurting Democratic candidates. There will be no firm verdict until the U.S. Census Bureau publishes its post-election survey on voter turnout next spring, but Pew’s circumstantial evidence shows that attempts at voter suppression failed to keep blacks from the polls—and may have even inspired progressive voters to turn out in higher numbers. This is very promising news for the future of the Black voice in politics, but let’s not let the excitement and participation die with Barry O’s re-election. That’s a slippery slope you’re sliding down… Sarah Silverman Defends Quentin Tarantino’s Use Of The N-Word In D’Jango Unchained According to Sarah Silverman, Spike Lee isn’t respecting the code of artists that declares that any and everything can and will be used in composing creative works. Lee recently sparked controversy after he deemed Tarantino’s latest piece of cinema, D’Jango Unchained , “disrespectful to (his) ancestors” due to the use of the N-word over 100 times. While out in Los Angeles, Silverman was asked what she thought of Spike’s refusal to see D’Jango According to Silverman: “Doesn’t it take place like during slavery? Wouldn’t it be odd if they didn’t have that horrific word in it?” “I think slave owners said it a lot, that’s why it has a stigma to this day.” While Silverman does claim to be a huge Spike Lee fan, she also acknowledges that he has some strange opinions when it comes to film. “I love Spike Lee, we were just talking about School Daze, but he’s a got a lot of mishegas (yiddish word for “crazy weird isht”) with art. Said a longtime business associate/close friend of the aging rockers: “It’s a little-known fact, but MICK JAGGER and the guys pay for the funerals of ALL the old bluesmen and blueswomen – most recently picking up burial expenses for the late, great ETTA JAMES and blues guitarist HUBERT SUMLIN. RG2 says Rob Parker was just trying to “stir things up” with his comments regarding Robert Griffin III’s race “situation.” Via ProFootballTalk: Robert Griffin III has yet to specifically respond to Rob Parker’s bizarre rant regarding RG3′s refusal to be defined by his race. Griffin’s father, however, has. “He needs to define what ‘one of us’ is,” Robert Griffin Jr. told Jim Corbett of USA Today. “That guy needs to define that. I wouldn’t say it’s racism. I would just say some people put things out there about people so they can stir things up. “Robert is in really good shape on who he is, where he needs to get to in order to seek the goals he has in life . . . so I don’t take offense.” RG2 hit the nail on the head when he said “stir things up.” Parker’s comments flowed directly from ESPN’s desire to “embrace debate” via the only aspect of the now-defunct Cold Pizza show that was even remotely interesting. Comments like Parker’s don’t pop up out of thin air. Every segment of First Take is planned, with producers finding topics on which the on-air personalities either genuinely disagree or can be coaxed into disagreeing. As MDS pointed out last night, the segment in question started with RG3′s comments regarding his desire to not be identified by race. The producers picked the subject. The producers knew — or at least should have known — what Parker was going to say. The entire excursion is a product of the format, which ESPN president John Skipper recently defended in an interview with SportsBusiness Journal. “It’s just another show,” Skipper said of First Take. “It’s not journalism. Nobody goes, ‘Gee, look how awful it is that CBS does these awful reality shows. Doesn’t that taint their great news organization?’ We have seven networks. There’s 8,760 hours per year. We’re programming 50-60,000 hours per year. . . . But people say, ‘Gee, that awful debate that you’re doing, how can the great SportsCenter coexist with the debate of First Take. I don’t know, how do infomercials coexist with the great journalism they’re doing someplace else?” First of all, when has anyone recently accused SportsCenter of being “great”? Second, the CBS reality shows aren’t filmed on a set that looks a lot like the set of the CBS Evening News. Third, Skipper has done quite well for himself, considering that he is unable to come up extemporaneously with any quality synonyms for the word “awful.” Finally, infomercials rarely include content that the network later must acknowledge was inappropriate. Three other white men have already pleaded guilty to hate crime charges in the death of James Craig Anderson, who was beaten and then run over in Jackson on June 26, 2011. None of the men have been sentenced. William Montgomery pleaded guilty Tuesday during a hearing in U.S. District Court in Jackson to two hate crime counts — one involving the fatal rundown of Anderson and the other involving the assault of another black man, who was not identified in court documents. In addition, Jonathan Gaskamp pleaded guilty to two hate crime counts in the assault of the unidentified black man. n March, Deryl Dedmon, 19, pleaded guilty to state murder and hate crime charges in Mississippi for running over Anderson. He received two life sentences on the state charges. In the federal case, Dedmon, John Aaron Rice and Dylan Butler each admitted to conspiracy and violating the 2009 federal hate-crimes law, according to federal prosecutors. They face sentences of up to life in prison and $250,000 in fines. Dedmon admitted in court that he and a group of white teens were partying in Puckett, a small town outside Jackson, when he suggested they find a black man to harass, federal prosecutors said. The group reportedly went to Jackson because of its majority-black population. They found Anderson outside a hotel, where he was beaten before Dedmon ran over him. Anderson was a 47-year-old worker at a car plant. They all need to rot in hell.
