Jay-Z’s ‘Empire State Of Mind’ To Replace ‘New York, New York’ At Belmont Stakes

NYRA official calls it ‘the quintessential 21st century theme song for New York City.’ By James Montgomery Jay-Z Photo: Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa In his massive hit “Empire State of Mind,” Jay-Z raps that he’s “the new Sinatra.” And it turns out he wasn’t joking. During Saturday’s 142nd running of the Belmont Stakes, “Empire” will be played as the horses are brought out onto the race track, replacing Sinatra’s classic “New York, New York,” according to a spokesperson for the New York Racing Association. “[It’s] the quintessential 21st century theme song for New York City,” an NYRA official told The Associated Press. A spokesperson for the NYRA confirmed the change to MTV News. “New York, New York,” (or, as it’s actually called, “Theme From ‘New York, New York,’ “) is most closely associated with Sinatra, though it was actually written for — and first recorded by — Liza Minnelli for the 1977 Martin Scorsese film of the same name. Sinatra recorded it for his 1980 album Trilogy: Past, Present And Future, and it became the last of his many signature numbers. Sinatra’s version has been performed as the field for the Belmont Stakes makes its way to the starting gate since 1997. Before that, the vaudeville tune “Sidewalks of New York” was performed. At Saturday’s race — which is held at Belmont Park on Long Island — teen singer Jasmine Villegas will perform “Empire.” Of course, this isn’t the first time the song has been performed at a sporting event. “Empire” became the unofficial theme song of the New York Yankees’ World Series run last year, with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys doing a version of the tune during Game Two of the Series. Later, Jigga did another take of the song during the Yankees’ championship celebration in Manhattan. Related Artists Jay-Z

Will Zach Galifianakis Be MTV Movie Awards’ Best Breakout Star?

‘Hangover’ funnyman will have to get past Gabourey Sidibe, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Logan Lerman and Quinton Aaron to claim the prize. By Jocelyn Vena Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Bradley Cooper in “The Hangover” Photo: Warner Bros. What happens when you pit two Oscar nominees, a starship captain, a teen demigod, a high school football hero and a pants-shedding funnyman against one another? Well, you get the race for Best Breakout Star at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , airing live this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. And while the case can be made for any of these fine nominees, it’s really up to fans to crown their favorite to take the Golden Popcorn in this category. “Twilight” fans already knew Anna Kendrick as Bella Swan’s chatty pal Jessica, but the actress showed she could hold her own as an overachieving young professional opposite George Clooney in “Up in the Air.” Kendrick’s Natalie sets out to prove she has what it takes to make it in the corporate world. Now, Kendrick will try to do the same at the awards show. Chris Pine had big shoes to fill when he stepped in to play Captain Kirk in last year’s “Star Trek” prequel/reboot. But Pine’s modern take on William Shatner’s iconic role won him raves from Trekkies, who’ll no doubt be pushing for him. But it wasn’t only Pine who expanded his fanbase in the sci-fi universe. Logan Lerman’s starring role in “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” garnered him buzz as a possible contender to play Spider-Man in the next installment of the franchise. Pine showed he was boss on the starship, but Lerman, who kicks butt as a teenage demigod, is no lightweight. After her turn in the gritty “Precious,” Gabourey Sidibe went from relative nobody to Academy Award nominee. The dark, sometimes disturbing flick highlighted Sidibe’s range and made her a newcomer to watch. Another first-time actor, Quinton Aaron, won Sandra Bullock’s heart (and American moviegoers’) in “The Blind Side,” the surprise box-office smash about a homeless young man who turns his life around, thanks to a generous Texas family. But while Aaron’s character Michael scores on the gridiron, stiff competition will make winning much harder at the Movie Awards. Zach Galifianakis took on a tiger, a baby, a gangster and even Mike Tyson in “The Hangover.” What’s a couple of actors to this funnyman? Galifianakis is hilarious as the often pants-less Alan Garner, who kicks off a bachelor party by spiking his pals’ drinks. He may be the breakout star to beat. Who are you pulling for to win Best Breakout Star? Tell us in the comments! Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Indy 500 Crash Video: Mike Conway Suffers Leg Injury Yet Survived

Photo: AP It has been a successful Indy 500 race with a fine weather around but just like any other race, accidents are really inevitable. In this year’s race, Mike Conway has been the unlucky one to experience it. The thing happened during the remaining three laps. Closing to 2.9 seconds when a half-lap behind the Nos. 37 and 24 cars of Ryan Hunter-Reay and Mike Conway touched wheels, sending Conway’s car airborne and slamming into the catch fence. “I had nowhere to go,” Hunter-Reay said after the race. Conway suffered an injury to his left leg and was airlifted to nearby Methodist Hospital because of the heavy post-race traffic. He never lost consciousness and the injury was not considered life-threatening. He was able to finished 19th as the race ended. Indy 500 2010 Winner is Dario Franchitti!

200 exciting laps has passed and Indy 500 2010 has proclaimed its winner. The weather has been perfect and everyone has been so excited to witness the race. The crowd then welcomes this year’s Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti, the Scottish racer from Tennessee. The commentators observed Franchitti seemed to be just about out of gas, so his victory could be just out of luck. He was joined by his wife Ashley Judd as they celebrate his great victory. This year’s win of Franchitti is his second. His first Indy win was in year 2007. He was followed by Dan Wheldon and Alex Lloyd came in 3rd. Last year’s winner Helio Castroneves is in 9th place. As to IndyCar points standings, Castroneves came in third but not enough to surpass Franchitti who’s in 5th place. The controversial lady racer Danica Patrick made it to 5th place this year after being by the booed by the crowd during the Qualifying round. It just mean that it would be her 87th race and hasn’t won even once. Great race as it is. See you all next year. ‘American Idol’ Finale: Lee DeWyze Upsets Crystal Bowersox

A cavalcade of performers hit the finale stage, including Christina Aguilera, Janet Jackson and Bret Michaels. By Gil Kaufman Lee DeWyze Photo: Amy Silverman They auditioned together in Chicago last summer, and they’ve become good buds in the nine months since. They’re both 24 years old and were vying to be the first Midwesterner to win the “American Idol” title. One, Ohioan Crystal Bowersox, was the odds-on favorite to win it all for most of season nine, while the other, low-key Illinois-bred Lee DeWyze, came on strong down the stretch and threatened to pull out an upset victory. On Wednesday night (May 26), when all the hoopla, oldies acts and teary goodbyes to departing judge Simon Cowell were finally said and done, it was DeWyze who emerged victorious in an “Idol” upset for the ages. While Bowersox hugged him and looked loose and relaxed, DeWyze seemed gripped by nerves as he awaited word from host Ryan Seacrest. When the verdict was read, the former paint-store clerk and high school dropout with a musical dream bent over and looked like he was going to be sick. He was quickly swarmed by the top 12, emerging with a smile and the outburst: “Oh my God!” When Seacrest asked how it felt to be the new American Idol, DeWyze laughed nervously. “I don’t know! This is amazing. Thank you guys so much for everything. Thank you. Thank you,” he said breathlessly, gesturing to the crowd with tears in his eyes and then hugging Bowersox and telling her that he loved her. “I’ve never been happier in my life,” he added before breaking into his coronation song, “Beautiful Day,” as a rain of sparks, confetti and lasers filled the air in the Nokia Theatre. It was an unlikely ending to an uneven season with what many considered the shallowest “Idol” talent pool in memory and which suffered from a nearly 10 percent decline in viewership but is still the #1 show on TV. Season nine saw the addition of fourth judge Ellen DeGeneres, whose quips and twisted food metaphors sometimes fell flat, as well as the departure of Cowell, considered the heart and soul of the judging panel. But before DeWyze could celebrate the realization of his long-sought musical dream, the two-hour show trotted out the usual assortment of time-fillers. The battling finalists first took the stage in burgundy Hogwarts-style school uniforms, which made sense a short time later as former Michael Jackson guitarist Orianthi shredded the opening licks to Alice Cooper’s season-appropriate summer anthem “School’s Out,” which the top 12 lip-synched alongside a kids’ choir with dead eyes and the Coop himself. Last year’s champ, Kris Allen, came by to sing his new ballad, “The Truth,” and one of the show’s biggest stars, Carrie Underwood, showed the newbies how it’s done with her sassy new single, the Kara DioGuardi co-written country rocker “Undo It.” Third-place finisher Casey James got one of the most plum assignments of the night, singing Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” with accompaniment by none other than surprise guest Bret Michaels , making his first stage performance since a string of recent health crises including a heart scare and a nearly fatal brain hemorrhage . Some of this season’s castoffs got one more chance to shine, with shaky vocalist Siobhan Magnus teaming up with Teflon teen Aaron Kelly for the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love,” which featured a cameo from the living Gibb brothers, Robin and Barry. Michael “Big Mike” Lynche hooked up with Michael McDonald for the Doobie Brothers’ “Takin’ It to the Streets,” while the top five girls joined Crystal for Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful” which morphed into the grinding “Stronger.” Aguilera herself showed up halfway through and eased into her new piano ballad “You Lost Me,” which she sang while standing on a pedestal covered with light bulbs and wearing a black catsuit and spangly tights. The top 12 harmonized on Janet Jackson’s “Again,” with Ms. Jackson herself strutting out in flowing black Elvira dress and her new short hairdo to take center stage and sing the hushed balled “Nothing.” She later stripped off the dress to reveal a skintight black bodysuit for a strut through her signature hit “Nasty.” DeWyze drew the relatively long straw by leading the top five men in a medley of Hall & Oates songs, including “I Can’t Go for That” and “Maneater,” before the real-deal duo came out and killed it on “You Make My Dreams Come True.” DeWyze later joined the band Chicago for a medley of their hits, including “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?,” “If You Leave Me Now” and “25 or 6 to 4.” But the night’s breakout moment began with Bowersox singing Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic” in her blues-mama voice before Morissette herself emerged and the two women circled each other and snarled out the lyrics to Alanis’ breakthrough 1995 hit “You Oughta Know,” on which their powerful voices perfectly meshed. The night’s final performance found Bowersox and DeWyze harmonizing on the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends” with an assist from the man whose cover of the song is the second-most definitive version, ’60s rocker Joe Cocker. And on Cowell’s final night, former right-hand lady Paula Abdul came via tape to participate in a montage honoring Cowell’s top moments on the program. Comedian Dane Cook debuted “The Things That Simon Said,” a touching acoustic ballad that strung together some of his most famous insults, including, “You came across like a background singer for a background singer.” He almost got the whole song out before a parade of the show’s most famous rejects came out and loudmouth head loony Ian Benardo stole the microphone from the joke man. There was also the obligatory visit from one of this season’s freak-show wash outs, General Larry Platt, who sang a beat-infected version of “Pants on the Ground” accompanied by a troupe of pants-sagging hip-hop dancers and, of course the ultimate “Idol” joke, William Hung. Later on, Abdul took the stage and gave an extended monologue about her relationship with Cowell, who she said brought “immeasurable joy” to her life, saying the show would not be the same without him — but that it will go on. Original Idol Kelly Clarkson also made an appearance, teaming up with fellow winners Underwood, Allen, Fantasia, Ruben Studdard, Jordin Sparks and Taylor Hicks for “Together We Are One,” which featured backup from a cavalcade of past top 12 finishers paying tribute to Cowell, who smiled as Abdul snuggled in his lap. The acerbic judge then took the stage, admitting he was more overcome with emotion than he expected to be. “What Paula said is true: The show goes forward. It will be different,” he said. “But I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the support, the fun and your sense of humor.” Cowell then kicked it back to fans in the audience, saying they were the ultimate judges of the show and that they’ve done a great job over the years. “It’s been a blast. Thank you.” As much as Cowell’s exit dominated the conversation, the night ultimately belonged to DeWyze, who kept the three-season streak of male winners alive. And, like small-town good-guy singer Kris Allen’s victory last year over power vocalist Adam Lambert, DeWyze’s coronation proved once again that sometimes it’s slow and steady that wins the race. As Simon said Tuesday night, America loves an underdog story, and even after being vocally lapped by Crystal on Tuesday, and for much of the season, the win went to the humble paint-store clerk — and nobody seemed more surprised by the outcome than Lee himself. What did you think about Wednesday night’s finale? What was the highlight? Did Lee deserve to win? Leave your comments below! Corruption investigation brewing: Obama in trouble?

As Obama’s presidency falters, with his popularity ratings crashing (latest polls have him between 42% and 48% as of May 26th, 2010), it is becoming increasingly clear that the regime must take steps to forestall a slaughter at the polls in the upcoming November elections that could see the Democrats lose control of one or both houses of Congress. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and there is a growing pattern that suggests that someone within the Obama administration has been trying to tinker with local elections by offering jobs to entice Democrat candidates to withdraw from primaries in order to shore up the candidates the Whitehouse prefers. This is a crime under federal law, and could explode into a major issue for Obama. More seriously, if Obama knew of the effort, it would be an impeachable offense—and you can bet your boots and saddle that if the Republicans managed to take control of the House or Senate, there will be hearings to investigate the charges. Even the major national media—generally left leaning and eager to ignore any blemishes on their beloved president—is beginning to notice. The most widely reported scandal involves Joe Sestak, who has publicly and repeatedly claimed that he was offered a job by the Whitehouse if he would withdraw from the race against Arlen Specter (the former Republican who realized he could not beat the Republican challenger in a runoff so he agreed to switch parties and vote for Obama’s Healthcare plan, in exchange for Obama’s support in the upcoming election). Sestak rejected the job offer, ran against Specter, and beat him. But now his public comments about the job offer are creating a maelstrom. The dodgy offer was not a single event, however. The Colorado gubernatorial race also saw some of the attention, when Democratic candidate Andrew Romanoff received a call from Obama’s deputy chief of staff Jim Messina, who allegedly offered a job at USAID. Unlike Sestak, Romanoff mentioned names and the offered job, lending even more credibility to the allegation. Remember that Obama also tried to push New York Democratic Governor Patterson to step out of the race, a third indication that, in these desperate times, the Whitehouse is eager to meddle in local elections in order to shore up its support. Those are just three examples, each supporting the notion that the Obama Whitehouse may be violating federal law in order to maintain its power. Democrats in Congress are rejecting requests (by Republicans Issa & Steele, as well as Democrat Dick Durban) to answer questions or open a probe. But this is precisely the kind of issue that can work against Obama in the mid-term elections, and should Republicans take power of Congress, Obama almost certainly will find himself being investigated and probed by Republicans at the same time he will have to prepare for the 2012 election. ***UPDATE*** Even MSNBC's Joe Scarborough is wading in now, accusing the media of “media malpractice” for not taking this issue more seriously. Uh-Oh-bama! If you are even losing your traditional lapdog media you know you are in real trouble!!! http://shakedowncrews.blogspot.com/2010/05/corruption-investigation-brewing-obam… added by: curtisreed
