Bolitics: Racist GOP Goon Steve Scalise Once Opposed Bill That Would Apologize For Slavery – “Why Should I Apologize For Something I Wasn’t A Part Of?”

Republican Congressman Steve Scalise Once Voted Against Bill That Would Apologize For Slavery via Huffington Post House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) voted against a bill that would have apologized for slavery to African-Americans when he was in the Louisiana Legislature, according to a 1996 New Orleans Times-Picayune article first reported on by The Hill. The representative, who has been a target of civil rights groups after it was revealed last month that he spoke at a 2002 white supremacist conference, was one of two House and Governmental Affairs Committee members who voted down the bill. “Why are you asking me to apologize for something I didn’t do and had no part of?” Scalise asked, according to the paper at the time. “I am not going to apologize for what somebody else did.” The bill passed out of committee on a unanimous vote once it was amended to express “regret” instead. Scalise’s office didn’t immediately return a request for comment about the vote. The 1996 measure was noted on Twitter by Lamar White Jr., the blogger who broke the news that Scalise spoke before the European-American Unity and Rights Organization, a group founded by former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, in 2002. Scalise has apologized and said he didn’t realize what kind of group he was speaking to at the time. Million Hoodies Movement for Justice, a national racial justice organization, planned a protest for Tuesday outside a Scalise fundraiser on Capitol Hill. And civil rights groups have asked Scalise to meet with them to explain his EURO appearance, though as of Monday, they had not heard back from him. WENN

Did You Know: President Obama Believes America Is Less Racially Divided Than Before He Took Office

Do you agree? President Obama Says The U.S. Is Less Racially Divided We’ve been of the mind that racism has been more virulent since President Obama took office but he disagrees. According to NY Post reports : President Obama says the United States is less racially divided despite the tensions raging from deadly police shootings and emotional protests. Compared to six years ago when he made history as the first black president, Obama says American race relations are on the upswing. “I actually think that it’s probably in its day-to-day interactions less racially divided,” Obama told National Public Radio. Americans, however, seem to disagree. A Bloomberg Politics survey out this month found a majority of Americans – 53 percent – feel interactions between white and black communities have deteriorated since Obama took office. The choke-hold death of Eric Garner on Staten Island and fatal shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. sparked nationwide outrage when the white officers in both cases were not criminally charged. Obama has sought to channel the frustration into a national campaign for better police relations. Americans have been divided by race over the outcome. The majority of white Americans agreed with the decision not to charge Ferguson Officer Darren Wilson in Brown’s death, while nearly all blacks disagreed. A slight majority of whites, however, disagreed with a grand jury’s decision not to charge Office Daniel Pantaleo in New York, according to Bloomberg’s survey. Do you think he’s right? Race Matters: Whoopi Goldberg And Rosie O’Donnell’s Heated Debate Over Bigotry “You Don’t Have To Be Black To Know What Racism Is!” [Video]

Rosie might have stepped out of bounds with this one… Whoopi Goldberg Doesn’t Believe Mistaking Obama For Valet Is Racist Via TheRoot As it turns out, The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg doesn’t think it’s racist that President Barack Obama has been mistaken for a waiter and a valet, or that his wife, Michelle, has been solicited for help by a Target customer. It’s not racism that causes these assumptions but ignorance, she insists: “You guys need to know what real racism is. … Racism is when someone comes up and says [expletive] and die. That’s racist.” The actor and talk show host detailed how her mother used to get followed around in stores, but still didn’t view that as an act of racism. “The issue is, you better look at each other as an individual,” she said. Orange Is the New Black actress Laverne Cox, who was a guest on the show, reminded Goldberg about the implicit biases that people have and the system that America was built on to help create and sustain these biases. “I’ve been black for 60 years,” Goldberg insisted. “For me, stupidity, dumb folks who just say dumb stuff because they’re not looking or paying attention to the person they’re talking to, which is why people could walk up to Obama and not look up at him and see that it’s the president. “I just see it as stupid,” Goldberg added. When fellow co-host Rosie O’Donnell attempted to step up and point out how these things were, in fact, racist, Goldberg was quick to cut her off. “You are a white lady telling me what is racist to you,” she said. Where do you stand on this issue? Image via WENN/YouTube Continue reading

Daimler Trucks Faces Civil Rights Complaints, Employees Being Called Racist Names Like “N****r” “Boy” “Toby” And “Buckwheat”

Wow Daimler… Really? “No place for n—ers here” ? Daimler Trucks North America Being Investigated Over Discrimination Claims This place definitely seems like a terrible work environment for people of color . According to KGW reports : A investigation into Daimler Trucks North America has expanded after four more employees opened civil rights complaints against the Portland-based company. Nine Daimler employees from its North Portland facility have now filed complaints, in addition to the commissioner’s complaint filed by Brad Avakian, according to Charlie Burr, spokesman for the Bureau of Labor and Industries. The new complaints include allegations of discrimination based on age, race and ethnicity, including racial epithets and failure of management. They also include retaliation for voicing concerns, which can include firing, being moved to a different job or getting passed over for a promotion. Among the complainants is a Native American employee who “may have been forced to leave his position because of working conditions at the North Portland facility,” Burr said. According to his complaint, the Native American employee said he was harassed and pressured by his team leader to do extra work or work outside his job description because of his race. The team leader was also accused of pushing the employee against the hood of a truck, challenging him to a fight. That employee said he felt he had no choice but to resign. Another black employee said he was called racist names and challenged to fights, told to take heated conversations “to the boat ramp,” and given a drug test when he reported the incidents. Avakian’s commissioners complaint was filed September 25, on behalf of five employees who claimed to have been called racist names including “ni**er,” “boy,” “Toby” and “buckwheat.” One of those African-American employees also alleged that a white Daimler coworker threatened him with a noose and said he would drag the employee behind his car. On September 18, an African-American woman filed a similar complaint, alleging she was discriminated against based on her race, age and religion. The woman was allegedly called derogatory names in German and, after working at the company for a year, a sign was placed on her chair that read “no place for ni**ers here.” She blamed Daimler’s “pro-German culture” on creating a hostile work environment for minorities. SMH. This is just terrible. Of course Daimler Trucks has released a statement claiming it doesn’t tolerate discrimination and trains employees to avoid it. But it sounds like some folks need more than training because clearly some violations have occurred. Taina Sohlman / Shutterstock.com
