Kings Of Leon Plan To Play Some ‘Beachy’ New Songs On Tour

‘It’ll be tough to not play the whole thing at Bonnaroo,’ drummer Nathan Followill says of upcoming album. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sasha Hamrogue Nathan Followill of Kings Of Leon Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images The Kings of Leon may have ditched the sunny climes of Los Angeles (or their native Nashville) to work on the follow-up to their breakout album, Only by the Night, but that doesn’t mean the new album is shaping up to be a dour affair. Far from it, in fact. “[This is] the first time we’d ever recorded in New York City, and we thought we’d come out with a little more darker record, because we had done all our records either in Nashville or L.A., where it’s a little more chilled out, not as much hustle and bustle,” KOL drummer Nathan Followill told MTV Radio during a Bonnaroo conference call Tuesday. “And I’ll be damned if we didn’t go in there and make a fun record! It’s got songs that are beachy, it’s got songs that are a little more like our Youth and Young Manhood days. … We’re super excited.” Followill said the new album is nearly finished and that he and the rest of the Kings are now putting the finishing touches on it back in Nashville. There’s still no title or release date (or song titles: “We haven’t even named ’em all yet, to be honest”), but there’s a pretty good chance the band’s fans will get a sneak peek of some of the new material on KOL’s upcoming tour, which kicks off June 5 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and includes a headlining slot at the 2010 Bonnaroo festival , set for June 10-13 in Manchester, Tennessee. “The record’s coming along great, man. It’ll be tough to not play the whole thing at Bonnaroo,” Followill laughed. “We’re going to try to be very selective of what we play, but there will definitely be some new tunes, for sure. … Anytime you’re coming into a tour after a new record, especially one that’s not even out yet, it’s pretty tough to not play the whole thing, so our set list at Bonnaroo, I think it’ll be a lot of oldies, a lot of goodies and probably a few more new ones than people are expecting for us.” Will you check out Kings of Leon’s upcoming tour? Stone Temple Pilots Traded Control For Democracy On New Album

‘We needed to learn how to be in a band again,’ Scott Weiland says of recording process. By James Montgomery Photo: MTV News After nearly a decade out in the wilderness — a time spent releasing solo albums, forming new bands and getting arrested once or twice — the Stone Temple Pilots return to their musical home on Tuesday (May 25) with their self-titled sixth album. The roiling, rumbling, hard-rocking release recalls the band’s late-’90s glory years, while also forging a new sonic territory, one that’s awfully indebted to Let It Bleed -era Rolling Stones. Yes, it’s a brand-new era for STP. It kicked off on a high note with a well-received run of shows earlier this year and continues today with a single, “Between the Lines,” that’s burning up the Modern Rock Radio charts. But, to hear the band tell it, this new era almost didn’t happen. There was a time not too long ago when Stone Temple Pilots seemed like they were done forever. “We produced this album ourselves, but we had some help from Don Was,” frontman Scott Weiland told MTV News. “It came at a point where we were sort of stuck, and he was great. … He got us all together and had us play the songs live. And that was important. We had been doing our own thing for so long, we needed to learn how to be in a band again. “Making a solo album is kind of easy,” Weiland continued. “Being in a democracy is difficult, because everyone has their own ideas, and you have to be able to respect those ideas. So making a solo album, or these guys doing what they’ve done on the outside, it’s like, you get a lot more control; you do what you want to do. And sometimes those things need to be done in order for a band to get back together and appreciate what it’s all about.” And that joy of reconnecting is readily apparent on the band’s sixth album. There’s a sense of the band rediscovering their old magic (like on “Between the Lines”), while also trusting one another enough to push the boundaries (the bluesy stomp of tracks like “Huckleberry Crumble” or “Hickory Dichotomy,” the Country leanings of album closer “Maver”). The delicate balance that required STP to embrace their past — warts and all — and look boldly forward too. There were some stumbles, but once they found their footing, everything else simply fell into place. “We’ve all been trying to get away from the guy in the mirror for quite some time now … but when it comes down to it, we’re all kind of the same,” guitarist Dean DeLeo said. “I was just laughing about this with a friend of mine, and I was like, ‘You know, we all still laugh at the same old things, and still kind of dig the same sorts of fashion and music.’ And it’s like, ‘Are we going to be 70-year-old guys still laughing at the same old things, and driving down the same old streets and going to the same old bars?’ I don’t know. I suppose we’re creatures of habit in that respect, but I’m pretty comfortable doing it.” “I think the older that we’ve gotten, we’ve kind of gone back more to our roots, the Beatles and Stones and Zeppelin … but there’s still that urgency to step outside your comfort zone and write a song like ‘Maver,’ ” Weiland added. “That’s why we’ve had such a long career; we never ape ourselves. We don’t want to steal from ourselves. I think that everything we’ve done in between has added to what we are right now.” Which era of Stone Temple Pilots is your favorite? Nas, Damian Marley Bring Political Distant Relatives Tour To NYC

Duo joined by Evil Genius Green Lantern for socially conscious show. By Shaheem Reid Lyrically, Nas has been at a higher altitude than his peers since the beginning of his career. His verbal achievements have become legendary. While admittedly, Nas sometimes has questionable beat selections, the Queensbridge native’s words have been so piercing that the guy can frankly get away with rapping over anything. And he has. Last year when Esco announced that he would be following up his album Untitled with a duet LP with a star outside of genre, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley , some of his fans didn’t know what to think. But if there is anyone who could actually pull it off, it’s Nas. Certainly there would be way more public pushback if, say, a Jay-Z, Eminem, T.I. or Young Jeezy would have set out on such an audacious musical venture. But with Nas, you know his spirit is free, and even in his mid-30s, the timeless mic king is almost as rebellious as when he was a 20-year-old kid fresh out of the Queensbridge projects. Last night, Nas and Jr. Gong touched down at New York’s Highline Ballroom for the second show of their Distant Relatives tour (the trek started this weekend in Chicago). The messages in the music steer clear of materialistic jargon and partying — the duo pushed thought provocation on worldwide subjects. Nas brought one of the great DJs in hip-hop, the Evil Genius Green Lantern. Marley came with his band, including backup singers, as well as a flag bearer who proudly and tirelessly waved the colors of Jamaica throughout the show. “What happened to us?” Nas rapped with force on “Tribes at War,” performed at the top of their set. “Geographically they moved us, from Africa/ We was once happiness pursuers/ Now we backstabbin’/ Combative and abusive/ African and Arab go at it, they most Muslim/ We should be movin’ in unison.” “Ancient People” came next, with Nas checking his BlackBerry while on the mic. Either he had an urgent text message or he couldn’t remember his lines, but nevertheless, Esco kept going. “Nah Mean” followed, with the Distant Relatives duo asking President Obama what he could do for them. From there, it was vintage Nas. The supreme MC went into some vintage material, including “Nas Is Like,” “Represent” and “Hip-Hop Is Dead.” “I hate the radio!” Nas yelled on the latter. “F— the radio.” Nas shouted out the Jamaican forefather of hip-hop, Kool Herc, and at the end of “If I Ruled the World” gave love to Guru. “My man Guru, he walks,” Nas said as his background singers sang, “we’ll walk right up to the sun. Hand in hand.” “This one’s about leaders,” Marley sang, from one of the album’s highlights, “Leaders.” “Let’s all change the world.” “The odds stacked against him/ He fights back Mac and Benzes/ Never puts cash or ass before a friendship/ He laughs last/ As some die young, he is still existing/ Somehow he got around the pitfalls of the system/ When he walks, we watch/ When we talks, we listen/ Leaders.”
