Ryan Ross Says It’s ‘Us Versus The World’ With The Young Veins

‘If you like it, then you do,’ he says of new group’s debut album. By James Montgomery The Young Veins’ Jon Walker and Ryan Ross Photo: MTV News When MTV News last spoke to Ryan Ross , he was in the process of finding a label to release Take a Vacation, the debut disc from his new band the Young Veins. He was confident that the hunt for a label would be resolved in a matter of weeks and that, finally, the Veins would have something (a single, a video, a tour) to show for all their hard work. Unfortunately, things didn’t quite work out that way. When MTV News spoke to Ross and the Veins at South By Southwest, Vacation still hadn’t been released, and their tour was only a few dates old. Yet, to a man — and there are five of them in the band these days — their confidence hadn’t waned, and with good reason: After months of searching, they’d finally found a suitable home for their album, which will hit stores on June 8. “It’s coming out on a label called One Haven — it’s pretty new. There’s only, like, four artists on it now and Butch Walker is one of them,” Ross told MTV News. “To be honest, the search for a label was really weird, because some of the labels that you wouldn’t expect to care about stuff like radio formats were the ones that did care. They were like, ‘Yeah, we love this record, but what are we going to play on the radio?’ And I was like, ‘You don’t have bands on the radio.’ ” And the question of format — just where does the Young Veins’ crackling, retro-leaning rock fit in the context of today’s exceedingly grim radio landscape? — is perhaps the most daunting challenge they face on their road to success. As Ross himself puts it, “I don’t know if we fit in at all, actually. “I don’t think there are a lot of bands that sound the way we do, who play the same kind of rock we do,” he smiled. “But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that at all.” And in statements like that you catch a glimpse of Ross’ swagger, the thing that polarizes most fans of his former band, Panic! at the Disco, and has earned him a certain, uh, reputation amongst those in the industry . It’s very much alive in the Young Veins’ music too. After all, Vacation gleefully — and some might say, stubbornly — flies in the face of most modern rock axioms. It clocks in at just a hair under 30 minutes. The songs pop and hiss and are totally free of today’s studio sheen. It was made on the fly, on the cheap and practically on the lam. It is very much a labor of love, made for (and by) a very select group of retro-rock fanatics. Ross said that was the most important aspect — he wanted to get his friends together in a house and just make a record they’d all love. He’s not worried what Panic! fans — or the record-buying public, for that matter — will think of the tunes. All of that will take care of itself. “The record’s out in early June, and after that, who knows? Some of the kids don’t seem to like it, and they don’t get it, and that’s fine, I understand,” he said. “There’s definitely a sense of ‘us versus the world’ with this band. We all sort of see it as we’re all in this together. And we’re all really happy about the music we’re doing, so it’s kind of worth it. I don’t like to say, ‘Hey, we’re really good. Check this out.’ If you like it, then you do. We’re definitely working way harder than we ever have.”

Sean Hannity’s "Freedom Alliance" charity is a huge scam!

For the last several years, Sean Hannity and the Freedom Alliance “charity” have conducted “Freedom Concerts” across America. They’ve told you that they are raising money to pay for the college tuition of the children of fallen soldiers and to pay severely wounded war vets. And on Friday Night, Hannity will be honored with an award for this “Outstanding Community Service by a Radio Talk Show Host” at Talkers Magazine’s convention. But it’s all a huge scam. Debbie Schlussel , a conservative radio talk show host, columnist, and attorney has been looking into Hannity’s so called “charity” and this is what she found: I began investigating these claims, and lo and behold, I discovered that Freedom Alliance gives very little money to the children of slain troops to pay for college and even less to wounded troops. The stories of injuries to troops and how much Freedom Alliance gives them–$200 for a soldier from a poor neighborhood who lost three limbs–is heartbreaking. Soldiers with traumatic brain injuries, severe wounds to the face from disfiguring burns and explosions, and multiple amputations got $1,000 or less, with only a handful of exceptions. The tax forms available to the public for the Freedom Alliance–for the years 2006-2008–paint a tragic story, a story of a charity that makes gazillions and spends very little for the purposes it claims, a charity that spends millions more on its small staff and crony consultants than it ever gives in scholarships to the children of the fallen or severely injured troops or in aid to the injured troops themselves. While Hannity’s Freedom Concerts take in millions, only a few hundred thousand go to the claimed intended recipients.

Lacey Brown Thinks Lack Of ‘Energy’ Led To ‘American Idol’ Exit

‘Even though I’m a bubbly, happy person, not every song that I sing is gonna be uptempo,’ she says. By Katie Byrne Lacey Brown Photo: FOX Lacey Brown had an “American Idol” Cinderella story. In season eight, she just missed the cut for the top 36 when the judges opted for another quirky singer, Megan Joy, instead. Well, this was her year. Not only did she get past Hollywood Week to the top 24, she even made it to the top 12 and the big stage. Unfortunately, her performance of the Rolling Stones’ “Ruby Tuesday” didn’t cut it, and she was the first finalist to get the boot . We caught up with the 24-year-old Texan on Thursday (March 18) to talk about why she decided to try out again this year, the judges’ conflicting advice and what’s next. Q : The judges have been offering a lot of conflicting advice this season. Do you think that made it harder to show America what kind of artist you want to be? A : It’s difficult with the criticism this year, because it has been a little bit confusing, and therefore I would change things week to week, which can leave the audience kind of questioning who I am. I would say I’m a very different artist. I have a very different voice that’s not suited for a lot of different genres, but I really see myself doing more of a pop/folk mix. I definitely can see myself making an album soon. I would love to do that, if I get the chance to. I just want to give people the chance to hear something that’s fresh and new and different. There’s not a lot of voices like mine right now on the radio, so I kind of take pride in the fact that I’m a lot different. I’ve always been a little bit more unique and individual, and I try to embrace that, and I tried to show that in my performances. Hopefully people can get that, and hopefully they like it. I’m looking forward to writing some new music that fits my voice and that people really like. Q : What made you come back this year after making it so far last season? A : I’m one of those people that gets very competitive. [ Laughs. ] And I decided that it’s way too much of an experience to not try again, to try to get further. If I would have made it into the top 36 last year, I wouldn’t have been able to come back this year. So I’m really glad I got a second chance. I’m really glad I decided to come back, because I needed to work on a couple things and come back and get further in the competition. That wasn’t a hard decision at all, because everybody that’s involved in this show — all the contestants, all the relationships — everything about this has just been a blast for me. So I just decided, “I’m gonna do it twice!” [ Laughs. ] Q : Can you pinpoint your downfall in the competition? A : I would probably have to say energy. They kept asking for energy in my songs, and I kept trying to give it, and they kept saying it was a sleepy performance. They wanted to see a little bit more energy, because [I have] a happy and bubbly type of personality, and they just wanted to see that transferred into my music. The issue that I was having is, I really love to sing ballads. I love telling a story with a song. I love the emotion of the song. I’m very artsy, so that side of me comes out when I sing. I think I kept picking songs that I really loved to sing and really felt, and maybe it didn’t transfer as well onstage. Maybe that was it. But I wouldn’t have changed any of it, because that’s who I am. Even though I’m a bubbly, happy person, not every song that I sing is gonna be uptempo. Q : Did you get a chance to talk to the judges after the results show? A : All the judges came up afterwards. I think they genuinely care about the contestants. Sometimes it’s hard to hear their critiques, but they’re there to help you. It’s a fine line between taking what they say personally and taking what they say and applying it to fix yourself and work things out that you need to work out. When they came up afterwards, they had nothing but nice things to say, things like, “This is just another step into your career. You have great vocals. You’re very unique.” They’re just full of compliments, because they want to see us succeed. And they don’t want us to feel like all hope is lost, because it’s not. I’m in the top 12 right now, and even though I got voted off, this is not the end-all for me. This is a great opportunity to jump-start my career. I think that’s the point they were trying to make. Q : Who are some of your musical influences, and would you ever like to work with them? A : I have a lot of influences right now. One of my biggest influences is Patsy Cline. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to work with her. I learned a lot from her performances, like how to tell a story in a song to make you feel like you’ve fallen in love again or make you feel like your heart’s broken. She was a great performer. … Also, there’s new and upcoming people who I’ve been following for a couple years like Pete Yorn, who’s just an amazing musician and singer that has a great vibe, and not a whole lot of people know who he is yet, but I think he’s an upcoming huge deal. I have a lot of indie bands that I like, and I got a couple country bands that I really like right now. I’m finding influence from everywhere. Were you sad to see Lacey go? Jennifer Aniston Doesn’t Like Grumpy Actors

The Bounty Hunter’s Jennifer Aniston has said she hates stars who are grumpy on the set of movies. The 41-year-old actress appears opposite Gerard Butler , 40, in the new movie and when asked by BBC Radio One Newsbeat if she throws on a fit, the actress said no. “No, I pretty much like to work and I’m generally just in a good mood. There was one day we were frustrated – we were having a tough time with the scene – but other than that no. I’m pretty much happy to be here. Whenever you see certain people on sets that are less than good-moody and not well behaved I find it extremely unattractive and I’m not a fan of that behavior.” Wonder if Gerard was ever grumpy on the set?

Stat Quo Working With Dr. Dre On Detox, Readying Own Album

‘It’s definitely gonna come out,’ Atlanta MC says of Dre’s long-awaited opus. By Shaheem Reid Stat Quo Photo: MTV News Stat Quo says he doesn’t know exactly when, but Dr. Dre is definitely going to drop Detox. It’s not a myth. Stat has been writing on the project for several months. “It’s definitely gonna come out,” the Atlanta native said of Dre’s long-awaited project. “I always said it was gonna come out in 2010 light years ago. I also at one point thought it would never come out. Being around Dre and the energy that’s being created, all I can say is that it’s incredible. It’s totally left-field from what’s going on — I really appreciate what he’s doing as an artist. Even though from the outside looking in, if I’m other people, I’ll be like, ‘What’s taking him so long?’ But it’s gonna be worth every second, every hour, every minute. Every week, every year we waited for the album. “The songs I’ve heard since I’ve been around are all really special,” he continued. “It’s so important to hip-hop that this record comes. It’s our saving grace. A lot of the radio stations are going rhythmic and going away from certain types of urban music. You can only go to contemporary station to get certain soul-type music. The whole platform is changing. An album like his can bring a boost to the music that’s going on.” Well, at least we know that Dre is busy. Stat appears in Dr. Dre’s new Hewlett-Packard commercial — in the short, Dre is at the boards producing while Stat is in the vocal booth. Quo’s fans have been waiting for him to put out his debut almost as long as Dr. Dre’s followers have been anticipating Detox. Stat signed to Shady/Aftermath around the same time as 50 Cent, watching while 50 Cent put out an album and waited while G-Unit commandos Tony Yayo, Young Buck, Lloyd banks and Young Buck dropped. When he was finally on deck in 2007, plans for his LP were squelched once again. “When it was time to put a record out, the powers that be [at Interscope] that keeps the lights on at the company was like, ‘We need either a 50 Cent or a Dr. Dre or an Eminem record,” Stat tells. “So I had to make the decision: ‘OK, it’s time to leave.’ We parted on good terms. Initially when I first left, I was upset because I wanted to put my album out under that umbrella. At the end of the day, my relationships with Dre and Em is still intact and it’s all good.” Last year, Stat inked a deal with former G-Unit executive and producer Sha Money XL’s, Dream Big Ventures imprint. His album Statlanta is due in May. The first single is “Success” and on the ditty, Stat raps from the perspective of success being his girl. “For me, it’s a situation of, you start a journey,” he explained. “This album is my odyssey. It’s like I’m finally completing it and putting it out. People are like, ‘You been working on this album for seven years.’ I’ve made this album, like, four or five times. When I first signed to Shady/Aftermath, it had one particular vibe then I worked with Em, and the vibe changed. Then I worked with Dre and the vibe changed again. Then when I left Shady/Aftermath I made another album thinking I was gonna go to another major, the vibe was different at that point. When I hooked up with Sha and the Dream Big thing, the vibed changed again. This is the vibe you getting now. So Statlanta has been made seven, eight times. I got a bunch of old Statlanta s, but I have to make the music more relevant to what I have going on at this particular time. Times changed.” Stat says his LP will depict what’s going on in is life right now. “This album — I had to look at the game and what’s going on in music,” he offered. “It’s a lot of people complaining. I think too many artists are trying to fit into boxes and lanes that don’t fit their personalities. If you’re a 31-year-old male or female, you shouldn’t be rapping about what a 16-year-old male or female is going through — unless you’re trying to enlighten them on a perspective of ‘I’ve been where you’ve been.’ But ‘I’mma drop my booty low an make music they’re excited about,’ that’s not really your life. You look like the old dude in the club. That’s just not hot. This [album], I wrote it from a standpoint of what I was going through in my life and the struggles that not only I’ve been through, but the people around me have been going through.” Related Videos Stat Quo’s ‘Success’ Related Artists Stat Quo Dr. Dre
