Here are links to parts one and two of “Plastic Beaches,” an original video that documents a volunteer group's efforts to find, collect, measure, and analyze plastic debris that is washing ashore in Oregon and Washington. This debris, ingested by sea birds and other animals, contains toxins that kill. MIcroscopic pieces of plastic are making their way into the food chain and threaten human health, as well. The spearhead group for this effort, Sea Turtles Forever, is trying very hard to raise awareness (and money) so that it can continue to work to save the oceans and the shorelines from this pervasive and insidious pollution. April 16 is the National Day of Silence, sponsored by a gay activist group, for American students. This day brings attention to all anti-LGBT (lesbian-gay-bisexual-transvestite)name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Each year the event has grown, and now hundreds of thousands of students participate to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior. Founded in 1996, the Day of Silence has become the largest single student-led action towards creating safer schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. The day is marks a silent protest against the harassment of gay and lesbian students. Christian groups claim that the holiday promotes gay rights and the acknowledgment of those rights. The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network has been marketing their event to schools around the nation. The event calls for students to not speak throughout the school day in hopes that the silent protest will raise awareness about harassment and bullying of homosexual students in public schools. Rihanna has lent her star power to a new public service announcement for charity. The “Umbrella” singer has joined forces with DKMS to raise awareness about leukaemia and is encouraging her fans to donate bone marrow to help save people who are affected. “Leukaemia kills more children in the US than any other disease. Many patients can be saved with a bone marrow transplant but until there are enough donors to save everyone, precious lives will be lost,” Rihanna explains. Fans can visit www.dkmsamericas.org for a registration kit or donate $65 to offset the cost of the kits.
