Carrie Underwood Opens Up About ‘Soul Surfer’ Acting Debut

‘It’s important to get Bethany’s story out,’ singer/actress tells MTV News about real-life story of surfer who lost her arm in shark attack. By Kara Warner Carrie Underwood Photo: MTV News Because the movie “Soul Surfer” is based on the true and inspiring story of teen surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack but overcame all odds to become a pro, the film was a real labor of love for everyone involved. Particularly so first-time actress Carrie Underwood. When MTV News caught up with the country music superstar, she explained why she decided to make her acting debut in “Surfer,” which opens on Friday. She also opened up about discovering how different the worlds of music and film really are. “This whole movie, this whole project is important,” Underwood said about signing on. “It’s important to get Bethany’s story out, and people being entertained but also, hopefully, people leave the movie theater feeling different about themselves in their lives and inspired,” she said. Underwood added that this was a project she really believed in and of which she wanted to be a part. “It wasn’t some silly nothing movie that in 10 years nobody is going to care [about]. Hopefully, people watch this and really take something away from it.” Regarding the differences between performing onstage and performing on a film set, Underwood said she felt a little bit like a fish out of water at first, but thanks to support from the cast and crew, she got through it. “Oh gosh, I think my singing world and the movie world are way, way, way different,” she said. “I know what I’m doing when I’m singing, I feel like on the set, everyone was so nice and they helped me out so much. They were very patient with me and very understanding that this was my first movie. … Onstage I know what to do, but in front of the lights and being on the movie set, I was pretty lost most of the time,” she admitted. “But they were great.” Are you excited to see Carrie make her acting debut in “Soul Surfer”? Mohammed-Phobic Comedy Central Lectures Conservatives About Religious Liberty? Jon Stewart’s That Shameless

Jon Stewart landed both his jokey feet on the Ground Zero Mosque controversy on The Daily Show Tuesday night. He mocked conservatives for having no respect for freedom of religion. This, from Comedy Central ? The network that mocks Jesus and Christians relentlessly, but censors whenever the radical Muslims threaten them ? Yes. Stewart was arguing for the “greatness” of Islam, that it should be accepted with great tolerance as a global religion – regardless of how much tolerance Islam demonstrates for freedom of religion. Stewart mocked conservatives and Republicans. “Haven’t these people ever heard of freedom of religion? Lieutenant Goveror of Tennessee, you wanna take this one?” He ran a hacked-up snippet of GOP Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey: “I’m all about freedom of religion [edit]…you could argue whether being a Muslim is actually a religion, or is it a nationality way of life, or cult whatever you want to call it.” We’ll get to Stewart’s surgical removal of context later. Stewart made a shocked face, narrowed his eyes, and lectured: “I think religion is what they wanna call it. But point taken. I can see being confused with Scientology, or the thing that Madonna does with the red bracelets, of this whole Justin Bieber craze, certain World Warcraft guilds, Harry Potter book clubs. But I think over 1400 years and over a billion Twitter followers, Islam’s kind of an accepted religion now.” Again, this is a rich line of argument coming from Stewart, whose acidulous attacks on the Roman Catholic Church hardly qualifies as treating Catholicism as an “accepted religion.” Instead, it’s a den of perverts and hypocrites. It’s the “villain” that’s “easy to spot.” Stewart insisted that Islam deserved more respect than Harry Potter or Justin Bieber fan clubs, but unlike certain mosques, those groups haven’t been known to nurture terrorist cells.  Then Stewart moved on to mocking Newt Gingrich: “But some people don’t want to be lectured about religious liberty.” He ran a clip of Gingrich saying “I don’t want to be lectued by them about religious liberty when there’s not a single church or a single synaogue in Saudi Arabia.”  Stewart took the easy retort: “Why should we as Americans have higher standard of religious liberty than Saudi Arabia! Makes no sense!” The audience applauded. But it is Stewart and the Comedy Central crowd that are the shameless hypocrites about religious liberty. If they really believed in free expression, they might dare to mock radical Muslims instead of cower before them. Now let’s consider how much Fake-News Stewart edited out from Ramsey’s argument. Mediaite printed a fuller transcript (ks it’s all wonderfully wacko. But there’s certainly more substance in here about the Islamic threat to religious liberty than Stewart wanted to allow. It would ruin his perfectly cocky liberal rant. Ramsey said this (Stewart’s edit in bold) about controversy over permits for a mosque proposal in Murfreesboro, Tennessee: Now, I’m all about freedom of religion. I value the First Amendment as much as I value the Second Amendment as much as I value the Tenth Amendment and on and on and on. But you crossed the line when, when they start trying to bring Sharia law here to the state of Tenn, in the United States. We are a law- we live under our Constitution and they live under our Constitution. But it’s scary if we get there. It’s always arguable- and I’ve been studying this issue, but I’ll be right up front with you, like I say until two weeks ago, three weeks ago, nobody ever asked me about this on a governor’s race. And why do you ask about that? Til this mosque started coming in up there. I’ve been trying to learn about Sharia law, I’ve been trying to learn about what going on-, it is not good if that’s what’s going on. Now, you could argue whether being a Muslim is actually a religion, or is it a nationality way of life, or cult whatever you want to call it . But certainly, we do want to protect our religions, but at the same times, this is something that we are gonna to have to face. Right now, though, the most ironic part of what’s happening in Rutherford County is I’m in the real estate business, you want to get something re-zoned, if you want to get something put in, that’s a three-month process. They approved that in 17 days [“mmm” from audience] in Rutherford County. The least they can do is back up, and say, let’s, let’s see what we’re doing over there, (inaudible) 53,000 square foot mosque in the middle of basically a neighborhood and they did it all almost overnight, 5:16. So that has become an issue, and what an issue. I’ve tried to study up on it. But I’ve read enough about Sharia law to know that it’s crazy. When liberal journalists (think Tom Brokaw) tout Jon Stewart as a precious steward of democracy, please remember how he’ll take video clips wildly out of context for a punchline. Tom Brokaw would think that would give bloggers a bad name, but apparently not fake news anchors.

Kathleen Parker Uses Her WaPo Column to Play Up Her Humility…and Her New Lucrative Star Turn on CNN

Naturally, Kathleen Parker used her Sunday space on the Washington Post to do what every other Parker column in The Washington Post has sought to do: prepare for the next career step. That would mean proclaiming her humility, shock and/or horror that she would get a nightly prime time hour on CNN, defending/excusing Eliot Spitzer, and declaring that she’s keeping her syndicated column (after all, the ratings might not be promising). Her tender solicitations for Spitzer and his genius in tackling Wall Street are the pink-nausea-pill part: He was prescient about Wall Street, in other words, long before the recent financial crisis. Who wouldn’t be interested in what he has to say about financial reform today? I’m not defending Spitzer or condoning his behavior. [Ahem, yes, you are.] Ultimately, I decided that his obvious intelligence, insights and potential contributions outweighed his other record. As far as I’m concerned, especially given that he has resigned from public office, the flaws that brought Spitzer down are between him and his family. Like most Americans, I believe in redemption. In the Parker career plan, then, this is the motto: I don’t believe in the creepy G-O-D people who are ruining the Republican Party with their “oogedy-boogedy armband religion” of redemption, but I do believe in the redemption of people who can be my meal ticket on CNN at “almost $700,000 a year.” In addition to that number, the New York Post also reported that former CNN host Connie Chung dumped on the new project: “It’s sadly comical…and this is terribly disillusioning. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert will give you more solid journalism than this program could possibly give.” Ouch. Parker’s Sunday column-slash-commercial has moments that are beyond parody. Mrs. Parker writes from “The Bunker,” and she is so writerly and anti-social that “Except when out for interviews and reporting, I mostly keep the company of one tiny blind poodle recently adopted from a shelter.” (Please report this to the NutraSweet Toxicity Information Center.) She loves shelter dogs, and those drooling, cheating politician dogs.    But the commercial continues. You’ll love this CNN show, she promises, because it will be like a “very interesting dinner party” (without the food or drinks). She is overcoming her quiet life with the Bunker and the poodle to be the Republican version of Alan Colmes:  That relatively quiet life is about to end, and I leave it with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. The trepidation is no mystery. It is the same for me as it would be for you. The excitement has to do with trying something new and challenging, as well as having resources at my disposal to explore the issues that really matter. For me those are the things we consider on our deathbeds — not who is up or down on a given day but how we have occupied our allotted space. Did we leave it better or worse? Did we cause someone to smile or laugh? Although the show is still in development, we intend to include regular contributors and guests selected in part from our own Rolodexes. Think of it as eavesdropping on a very interesting dinner party. It will be “interesting” because it won’t be a “food fight.” I’m sure that’s what CNN promised with the last several failed shows in the 8 pm hour. At this point, they ought to promise that watching Eliot and Kathleen fight will be almost as interesting as Mr. and Mrs. Spitzer fighting. If you’re going to build a show around shameless tabloid adultery, you ought to go whole-hog. But Mrs. Parker is above all that. In fact, she’s above the demeaning sphere of television:  I’m on record about my general dislike of the food-fight mentality of most television programming, which we hope to avoid. I’ve also expressed my kinship with aborigines who believe that the camera steals the soul. I think they’re on to something. If she really believed her own sales talk, she would have turned down the job, and the embarrassing you’ll-love-Eliot talk that comes with it. The first time I attacked Parker for selling out the conservative side to get on TV, she e-mailed me protesting that she wasn’t doing this to appear on the Chris Matthews Show, which she then began regularly doing. I would hope she’s beyond pretending now that she’s not selling out to get on liberal TV.

Jon Gosselin Drops Custody Lawsuit, Seeks Truce with Kate Gosselin

Jon Gosselin will drop his legal case against Kate Gosselin for custody and child support. Seriously. Even more shockingly, the two seem to be getting along. Sources connected to the situation also note that Jon never really believed Kate was an “absentee mom,” as his now-fired lawyer alleged earlier this month. Anthony F. List levied that charge and many legal threats against Kate while she was on Dancing with the Stars … Jon later claimed List was not his lawyer. Last week, List quoted Jon as calling Kate a shameless self-promoter who should be supporting her kids and not herself. That’s when he got the public ax. BURYING THE HATCHET : Did hell really freeze over? Regardless of who’s representing Jon, which not even he seems to fully grasp, he and Kate are trying to hash out a custody and child support agreement. A new one, and one that is more up to date than the one that is currently in place. Because Kate Gosselin is making serious money and Jon isn’t, face it. Also, he’s actually shown more of an interest in being with the kids than he did during divorce proceedings, so it’s a different situation now than before. Will Kate let Jon appear on the revamped Kate Plus 8 , or spin-off show, Twist of Kate? Hey, never say never … when a douchebag is desperate for cash.

Michelle McGee Called a Dumb B!tch By Chelsea Handler, Bashes Talk Show Host’s Saggy Boobs

Jesse James mistress Michelle “Bombshell” McGee and celebrity gossip commentator Chelsea Handler are in the midst of an awesome feud. Here’s the rundown: Handler wrote that “Michelle really believed that Sandra Bullock and Jesse James were separated and was ‘shocked’ to see them at the Oscars. I guess she doesn’t read magazines, which makes sense since she basically has one on her face.” Good one . Offended by the tattoo joke, McGee then retorted on Facebook that Handler should “use some of that botox from your forehead and put it in your flabby underarm skin… I’ve seen better wings in a bucket of KFC chicken.” Harsh . Handler then addressed those comments on Wednesday’s Chelsea Lately , wrinkling her forehead and quipping, “look at my forehead you dumb bitch!” It gets better still . Michelle McGee is no fan of Chelsea Handler lately … or ever . Michelle “Bombshell” McGee went on the offensive on Facebook, writing: “Dear Chelsea, glad to see my grandma’s old clothes put to good use in your wardrobe.” Oooh . “Her mu-mu’s look AMAZING on you. P.S. You need to hire another midget to hold up those saggy boobies. All that breast feeding Chuy has really taken its toll.” Chuy Bravo is Handler’s personal assistant who appears on her E! show. That was a low blow. Your move, Chels. Make it a good one!
