Tyler, The Creator Wants MellowHype To ‘Get Their Shine’

‘People focus on me so much instead of the whole OF collective,’ Tyler tells MTV News of buzzworthy Hodgy Beats and Left Brain. By Steven Roberts, with reporting by Matt Elias Odd Future’s Hodgy Beats and Tyler The Creator Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Odd Future ‘s MellowHype may seem to have gotten lost in Tyler, the Creator’s shadow, but the rapper/producer duo of Hodgy Beats and Left Brain are still making a name for themselves. The duo released the Matt Alonzo-directed music video for “64” on Monday at midnight through the OF collective’s website . The song serves as the first single the Fat Possum Records re-release of MellowHype’s BlackenedWhite album, which drops on July 12. MellowHype first performed “64” on Fuel TV’s “Daily Habit” with labelmates Bass Drum of Death, and it has since become a fan favorite at OF shows. When MTV News caught up with Odd Future’s de facto leader, Tyler, the Creator , he said he was sure Hodgy and Left Brain could carry the OF momentum. “I know they can, it’s just that people focus on me so much instead of the whole OF collective. If they look deeper, they’ll find way more stuff,” Tyler said. “I want them to get their shine and stuff. I want to make sure that everyone knows the whole circle instead of just R. Kelly.” Tyler also said he wasn’t really thinking about the numbers for his recently released second album. Goblin debuted at #5 on the Billboard album chart, selling more than 45,000 copies in its first week, and Tyler couldn’t be less concerned one way or another. “I think it’s cool. I’m a kid who just made f—ing music out of boredom and made it to #5 [on the charts]. They’ll never be able to do what I did or what I can do. They could never play instruments or start a cult of kids and sell those records. They just sit and talk about it, so I don’t really care. And I’m R. Kelly.” What do you think of Odd Future’s MellowHype? Let us know in the comments! Taylor Swift’s ‘Back To December’ Video Director Explains Clip

‘I wanted [Taylor] to perform a very natural way, to make her look very European,’ says Yoann Lemoine. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift in “Back to December” Photo: Big Machine Records In her video for “Back to December,” Taylor Swift finds herself and her home covered in snow while she contemplates the best way to apologize to her former beau, played by model Guntars Asmanis , for breaking his heart. Director Yoann Lemoine tells MTV News that he had a certain aesthetic he wanted to capture for the chilly clip, which was shot partly in Nashville (for Swift’s scenes) and Upstate New York (for Asmanis’ scenes) in December. “I wanted the video to be very simple and metaphorical at the same time,” the Frenchman explained. “I wanted to work on the coldness of feelings in a very visual way, playing with the snow, the distance and sadness. [Taylor] really liked it. The winter theme was very interesting to me — the snow, the ice. I even wanted the guy to go swim in frozen lakes at some point. It was not possible, but I wanted to translate how you feel sometime when your heart is broken. The snow in the apartment is supposed to show how connected she is to him. He is outside, in the cold, but somehow she is connected to him.” Swift pretty much let Lemoine have control over the clip’s look and feel, although it was her idea to have her character leave the letter for her beloved. As for Swift’s look in the video, Lemoine says he was focused on making sure that it all felt real and that she came off as accessible. “I have been going through a lot of videos and pictures of her on the Internet trying to find the best angle and style for her. I wanted people to feel like they would get to know her very intimately, and really trust in what she was saying,” he explained. “I wanted her to perform a very natural way, to make her look very European. This was the main challenge to me. All of Taylor’s world is very far away from my culture, but I saw something in her that could be very rough and heartbreaking; far from the princess glittery outfits and glam that she often goes for.” As for Asmanis, the duo agreed that he was the perfect fit for the part. “I wanted a boy that was fragile and beautiful. I didn’t want to go for a hunk or a perfect cheesy boy that would have killed the sincerity of the video,” Lemoine said. “I just imagined a face that would enhance the fragility of the video. We did cast a couple of boys and both Taylor and I loved Guntars.” Related Artists Taylor Swift

‘Skins’ Stars’ Parents Are ‘Cool’ With Show’s Racy Material

‘She understands the heart of the show,’ Ron Mustafaa says of his mom’s reaction to the show. By Jocelyn Vena Skins” cast member Camille Cresencia-Mills Photo: MTV News Given all the sex and drugs on “Skins,” which premiered Monday night on MTV, one might think that its young stars would have a lot of explaining to do with their parents. While it all takes place in the fictional realm of the show, one of the show’s actors admits that it has lead to some awkward talks with his mom. “My mom is like really cool, but she’s, like, really Indian,” Ron Mustafaa, who plays Abbud, laughed to MTV News about the show’s racy subject matter. “She’s not really accustomed to a lot of the crazy stuff on American television. She’s really cool with it because she understands the heart of the show … growing up and finding out who you are, but at times I have some weird convos with my mom about filming certain sequences … [but] it’s all tastefully done.” Some “Skins” cast said they watched the U.K. version with their parents, so the show’s themes were nothing new. “For the most part, our parents are really just proud of us,” Sofia Black-D’Elia (Tea) said. “So, maybe we do some crazy things on the show, maybe they’re going to watch us take lots of fake drugs, but at the end of the day, they’re also seeing us work our butts off, and do everything that we really wanted to do with this career. So far, my parents are personally so proud of me.” After seeing British “Skins” stars like Dev Patel and Nicholas Hoult go on to bigger things after the show, is the new cast ready for fame and fortune? “I think it’s one of those things where they had success afterwards because of their talents and because of what they were able to do,” James Newman (Tony) said of the U.K. version’s stars. “I don’t think it has that much to do with us in that we’re trying to play our roles. Whatever happens after that has to do with us. We’re all so excited about this show we’re not really thinking about what’s coming afterwards.” “I was just gonna say were trying to just concentrate on sleeping and getting some rest,” D’Elia added. “I’m proud of all of us after everything we’ve accomplished, and I think the aftermath doesn’t worry us right now. … Right now, more than anything, we’re excited to see the show.” Watch “Skins” on Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Florence And The Machine Singer Wants Eminem’s Autograph At The VMAs

‘The first single I ever bought was ‘The Real Slim Shady,’ Florence Welch admits. By James Montgomery Florence and the Machine’s Florence Welch with MTV News’ James Montgomery Photo: MTV News Ever since she was announced as a (rather unexpected) multiple MTV Video Music Awards nominee last month, things have gotten sort of weird for Florence and the Machine ‘s Florence Welch . It’s not so much the awards show thing — back in her native U.K., they have become mainstays at shows like the Brits and the Q Awards — as it is the overwhelming number of questions Welch has had to answer about fellow VMA nominees Eminem and Lady Gaga (both of whom have videos up against her “Dog Days Are Over” clip for Video of the Year).

Rolling Stone ‘Runaway General’ Reporter: Aloof Obama ‘Didn’t Really Understand What Counterinsurgency Meant’

While the media are attempting to grapple with the change in leadership of the Afghanistan war and what that all means, one thing that could be learned from this, which has been ignored, are valid criticisms of President Barack Obama and his ability to command the U.S. military. Michael Hastings, author of the now-famous Rolling Stone magazine article “Runaway General” that captured several gotcha moments resulting in Obama relieving General Stanley McChrystal of his command, appeared on Al Jazeera English on June 23. He offered some startling insight into Obama’s failure to grasp what he was actually getting into with this Afghanistan strategy known as the counterinsurgency strategy. Hastings was asked if McChrystal had perhaps gotten the whole strategy wrong, but Hastings explained it was the President that didn’t know what he was really getting into. “I think that ship had sailed last year,” Hastings said. “I think once the decision was made to do a counterinsurgency strategy, they had a pretty clear idea in mind what they wanted to do and I think this is quite interesting. I think this is one of the issues Obama didn’t really understand what counter-insurgency meant and when the military said they wanted to do a counterinsurgency strategy that that actually meant 150,000 troops. Obama thought he could get away with just sending 21,000 over and getting a new general.” And as Hastings explained, Obama wasn’t prepared due to this miscalculation. “That clearly – anyone who has spent anytime around the military over the past few years you know, you know how many troops they wanted in Afghanistan all along, but I think Obama was clearly caught off guard by that,” Hastings said. Later in the interview, Hastings accused Obama of not dedicating a lot of his time into putting the counterinsurgency strategy (or COIN) in place. Instead the Rolling Stone reporter said Obama was looking for a quick way to fill a campaign promise with roughly a seventh of the troops needed to successfully implement the strategy. “I think it’s clear that [Defense Secretary Robert]Gates and [Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike] Mullen are big counterinsurgency fans and they sold Obama on the idea,” Hastings explained. ” I don’t think Obama really put too much thought into it to be honest. I think it was a campaign promise that he thought he dealt with by just sending 21,000 troops and not really thinking about what that really meant. And that was clear even last August when, you know, Bob Woodward released that report of McChrystal’s strategy – you know that the Obama administration was like, ‘Whoa, what does this mean?’ And you know, I think anyone who knows anything about COIN – that’s what they call counterinsurgency, knows that it takes a heck of a lot of guys, a heck of a lot of money and a heck of a long time.”

Tiger Woods Apology Statement: The Remix

Tiger Woods’ mea culpa Friday was a remarkable event in the sense that the world basically stopped for 15 minutes to hear him admit banging waitresses. But it was far from the first such press conference or televised admission that an embattled, married, cheating celebrity has had to make in recent years. Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, current South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, David Letterman and Kobe Bryant can all relate thanks to similar situations. Perhaps Tiger, who’s already back in rehab , can take solace in that fact … and in this slow jam remix of apology with those of his aforementioned brethren: Tiger Woods Apology Remix Follow the jump for another Tiger Woods apology speech remix, this time with his words spliced together to reflect what the golfer was really thinking … What Tiger Meant to Say What did you think of Tiger’s apology (the real one)?
