Chris Brown Fan: Keeping Rolex ‘Didn’t Cross My Mind’

‘I was afraid it was gonna get broken,’ VMA hero Alisha Borton tells MTV News of rescuing singer’s pricey watch. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rebecca Thomas Chris Brown tosses his Rolex into the crowd during his performance at the 2011 VMAs Photo: MTV When Chris Brown ‘s Rolex went missing during his high-flying VMA performance last month, it was a young lady in the audience who found the watch and promptly returned it to the pop star. Alisha Borton, a 24-year-old Ohio native, got tickets to the 2011 VMAs through a casting service while she was in California visiting a friend. Little did Alisha know that just by attending the show — and finding Brown’s very expensive Rollie — she would become the unofficial leader of Team Breezy. “I was actually on the stage right behind where the trampoline was,” Borton recalled to MTV News on Wednesday. “You can see me right behind the trampoline … on TV [and] you can see where he takes off his watch and throws it. I guess he did it on purpose. There’s the watch flying in the air, I just picked it up and put it on my wrist. I was afraid it was gonna get broken.” After putting on the watch for safekeeping, the dental hygiene student kept her eye out for the singer. “Whenever he came off the stage, I kind of went towards him but he didn’t see me at all,” she explained. “Then we were walking back to where we were [standing onstage]. Then there was a lady … the lady came up to me [and said], ‘I need that watch,’ and she took it.” The star’s watch is worth an estimated $22,000, and Alisha joked, “I thought it was expensive, I didn’t think it was that expensive. I had it on my wrist waiting for somebody to take it. That’s crazy,” she added about the price of the accessory. “That’s like taking a car and trying to sell it. It didn’t cross my mind that I could keep it.” For helping to make sure that watch got back in one piece, Breezy rewarded Borton with concert tickets and a special VIP meet-and-greet with him at his September 21 show in Ohio. “It’s just been so crazy. I haven’t gotten to process it yet. My friends are probably tired of me talking about it,” she laughed. Related Videos VMA 2011: Performances Related Artists Chris Brown

Mary J. Blige ‘Reaching In Deep’ For My Life Sequel

‘We want to live,’ Blige tells MTV News about My Life Too: The Journey Continues, due in October. By Rebecca Thomas Mary J. Blige performs at the 2011 Essence Music Festival Photo: Getty Images Mary J. Blige was a troubled 23-year-old when she dropped her classic My Life album. On the surface, she was “ghetto fabulous” — draped in high-priced, ’90s-era DKNY duds and oversize Versace glasses — but beneath the veneer, the Queen of hip-hop soul was broken, abusing drugs and swept up in one bad romance after another. Being too young and too raw to tell anything but the truth, the girl from the Schlobohm housing projects in Yonkers, New York, poured all that turmoil into her sophomore album and then watched as tracks like “Be Happy” and “I’m Going Down” slow-strutted up the charts to the tune of more than 3 million albums sold. Now, 16 years (and several Grammys and platinum plaques) later, MJB plans to revisit her enduring second disc with the release of My Life Too: The Journey Continues, due in October. “It’s called The Journey Continues because on the first My Life album, we all just were depressed and wanted to die. This one, we want to live, and we understand with living, life still comes with challenges and triumphs and good times and bad times,” Blige told MTV News at the Essence Music Festival earlier this month, where she was not only honored for her charitable work at the McDonald’s 365Black Awards but also closed out the New Orleans fest. Among the beatmakers Blige has tapped to work on the sequel is Swizz Beatz , and she teased what fans can expect to hear. “There’s ballads, there’s midtempos, uptempos. There’s love songs, there’s pain songs. There’s triumph songs, there’s workout songs. There’s all kinda stuff!” she laughed. “This one is definitely what people are looking for from me, and I’m digging and I’m reaching in deep to give them what they need.” Blige is well aware of the My Life legacy , how fans connected to her slow-drip brand of blues. The singer even complained in ’08 that many of her followers didn’t want her to be happy , preferring the dark tunes she cooked up while depressed to her newer love songs. So, Mary’s aiming to strike a balance this fall. “I just wanna express again, not just my own, but just people’s lives around me and just celebrate it, but celebrate it in a way — not that we don’t have, ‘OK, sister, let me get you through this’ [songs or], ‘OK, here’s what I’m dealing with,’ ” she explained. “And that’s basically what that record is about. But I want to get it right , so my fans can be happy.” What do you expect to hear on Mary J. Blige’s new album? Share your thoughts below! Related Artists Mary J. Blige

New Edition Album ‘In The Making,’ Bobby Brown Says

Pioneering pop&B boy band chop it up with MTV News about their reunion. By Rebecca Thomas New Edition perform at the Essence music festival Photo: Getty Images NEW ORLEANS — Don’t let the fancy footwork fool you: Bobby Brown says it took him two years to get back enough “muscle memory” to pull off the smoove moves that earned his group, New Edition , a permanent place in the annals of boy bands. OK, maybe not two years, but Brown — whose shirtless onstage dancing once got him arrested, during his ’90s heyday, in the state of Georgia — admitted it took some time when we caught up with him and his bandmates at last weekend’s 2011 Essence Music Festival . “It didn’t take two years, but it took a little while to get back into, you know, not moving the way I used to move and get the steps and start dancing back on my toes instead of flat-footed,” the onetime R&B bad boy laughed as he demonstrated a little shuffle. “Bobby got on shoes. Let me tell you, he ain’t had shoes onstage for the last 20 years,” group heartthrob Ralph Tresvant teased the sneaker-rocking Brown. “So that’s a testament to his dedication.” “It’s a lot of things that I’m capable of doing, but New Edition steps, whether you think so or not, they’re probably one of the hardest things in dance that you could do,” Brown added. In the ’80s, those steps, paired with soulful vocals, took five young boys from a Boston ‘hood to music-industry superstardom. Now celebrating 30 years in the business, New Edition — Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Tresvant, Brown and Johnny Gill (the only non-Bostonian brought into the fold in the ’90s to take over for Brown) — put their indelible street stamp on the boy-band hustle. And their influence rolls on — whether the bubblegum pop of their 1983 Candy Girl debut or the boys-to-men songs of their classic Heart Break album. Case in point, sought-after producer Jim Jonsin told MTV News this month that he would reference the New Edition sound for Justin Bieber ‘s next album. Backstage at the Superdome, the still-dapper guys, now in their early 40s, chatted with their arms flung around each other. In three decades, they’ve endured more than a few ups and downs — self-imposed hiatuses, label changes and infighting — and even spawned successful solo careers and subgroups like Bell Biv DeVoe. But gathered on this Fourth of July weekend in the Big Easy, they found they could recapture that magic, reducing grown women to squealing tweens. “Through the love of just being around each other for many years and trusting that we were just gonna be there for each other, we were able to let [individual projects] go for a minute and jump out that car and jump into this one,” Tresvant, in a stylish tan fedora, explained. So could an album be in the works? “We got a New Edition album in the making,” Brown revealed. “We’re thinking about it, we’re talking about it, and it all starts with us, just thinking about making some good music together. … I’m just glad to be a part of this and I’m proud to be a part of this.” Share your memories of New Edition in the comments! Ryan Leslie Says ‘You Be Killin’ ‘Em 2’ Is An ‘Event’

R. Les tells MTV News ‘supergroup’ partners Fabolous, Ne-Yo bless remix, ‘Look at Her,’ with peek at what’s to come. By Rebecca Thomas Ryan Leslie Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — For any girl who takes her style seriously — like, blow the rent on a striped concoction from Prada’s spring/summer 2011 collection serious — 2010 was a good year for primpin’-ain’t-easy rap. Big, tag-flaunting singles like Drake’s “Fancy” and Rick Ross’ “Super High” expressed shock, awe and appreciation for girls and their fashion. And, for coining the word “shoe-icide” alone, the Ryan Leslie-produced Fabolous single “You Be Killin’ ‘Em” earned monster status on that playlist. Now, Leslie is aiming to follow up the radio smash with another heater. We ventured downtown last week and caught up with R.Les just before he headed out for his Coachella festival debut. He gave us a preview of Les Is More, his first post-Universal, indie release due July 4, teased his much-discussed supergroup and let us in on “You Be Killin’ ‘Em” — the sequel. “We just did a ‘You Be Killin’ ‘Em,’ part 2 called

Big Sean Says Lil’ Kim Should ‘Hop On A Track With Another Big’

‘She’s one of the greatest rappers of all time, straight up,’ MC says during ‘RapFix Live’ after seeing Kim’s kind words about him. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway Big Sean on “RapFix Live” Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News Kanye West isn’t Big Sean’s only notable co-signer. During Lil’ Kim’s recent appearance on MTV News’ “RapFix Live,” one of the up-and-coming MCs she said had plenty of potential was the G.O.O.D. Music/ Def Jam artist. “There’s a new rapper. I don’t know if he’s a rock star yet, I don’t know if he’s really gotten that chance, but his name is Big Sean,” Kim told MTV News. “I like him. I think he’s dope.” It was Sean’s turn on Wednesday’s (March 23) “RapFix Live.” During his sit-down interview, the flashy Detroit rapper was humbled after seeing the video of the Queen Bee speaking highly of his talents. “That’s crazy, man,” Sean told MTV News’ Sway Calloway. “That’s a legend right there. She’s one of the greatest rappers of all time, straight up. Somebody told me that she said that, but that’s my first time actually hearing her really say that. It’s an honor. That just really goes to show me I’m just doing something right, through all the hate. Through all the people telling me, ‘Man, you’ll never do whatever, whatever, man,’ stuff like that keeps me going.” With props from Lil’ Kim, Sean said he intends to inquire about a possible collaboration with the Brooklyn rapper. “Lil’ Kim’s a real G, man,” Sean said. “She need to come holla at me. Hop on a track with another Big. … I need her phone number to hit her up.” For now, Big Sean’s debut album, Finally Famous, is due in stores May 3. Would you like to hear a Sean and Kim collabo? Chris Brown Recalls Making Justin Bieber ‘Kind Of Mad’

F.A.M.E. singer was late to their ‘Next 2 You’ recording session. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rebecca Thomas Chris Brown Photo: MTV News Aside from his latest controversy , Chris Brown is back with F.A.M.E. , which stands for “Forgiving All My Enemies” and “Fans Are My Everything.” On the new album, Brown has some choice features from stars such as Lil Wayne, Tyga, Ludacris and Justin Bieber. “Working with Wayne is always incredible,” said Brown, whose “Beautiful People” video premiered Tuesday on MTV’s “The Seven.” “I’ve had Wayne on every single album I’ve done. … Being able to work with these guys is incredible. I build most of my collaborations off of just the relationships that I’ve built with these guys over the years and then new relationships, like Justin Bieber.” Brown told MTV News that it was awesome getting Bieber on board for “Next 2 You.” Brown became interested in featuring the teen star on his album after the duo worked on the remix to Bieber’s track “Up,” which was featured on Never Say Never – The Remixes . “Being able to collab with [Bieber] was great,” Brown said. “He’s a young, energetic cat, so being able to work with him, with the fanbase he has, was incredible. I know a lot of little girls are going to love this record. “I wouldn’t say [he’s] my prot

Chris Brown Calls Nude-Photo Leak ‘Disappointing’

‘I was like, ‘Man, now it’s gonna [look like] a gimmick behind it,’ F.A.M.E. singer tells MTV News of his initial reaction. By Rebecca Thomas Chris Brown Photo: MTV News Even with full-frontal snaps of him circulating on the Net, Chris Brown wants everyone to know that, like a certain fired sitcom star, he’s still … winning! Earlier this month, a newly blond C.Breezy was preparing for the promotional run of his March 22 release, F.A.M.E., when photographs of the heavily tatted pop&B singer — completely in the buff and facing an oblong mirror with phone in hand — leaked to the Internet. Brown quickly took to Twitter , where he unleashed a salty post before removing it: “WTF!!! Here we go!!!” On Friday (March 18), Chris stopped by MTV News for a sit-down and he explained what really got him hot under the collar about the incident. “Let me be honest with you. I didn’t want to put no pictures out; that’s not my intention. A lot of people were saying, ‘Yo, he leaked the pictures, he was trying to get promotion,’ ” the “Deuces” singer said. “For me, I was always a singer, so unless I’m planning on trying to do porn, I don’t think I’d want to just leak my wang out to the world before my album comes out.” While leaking photos might be the go-to for celebutantes and wannbe stars famished for fame, Chris was bothered that critics would accuse him of deliberately passing along provocative pictures for publicity’s sake. “It was disappointing to me that it was out, because I was like, ‘Man, now it’s gonna [look like] a gimmick behind it,’ ” he said of the pre-release push for his album. “And I don’t want a gimmick behind anything that I’m doing.” Although Brown was mum about the girl on the receiving end of those racy pics, we wondered if the experience would make him more cautious with his iPhone in the future. But it turns out Chris found something oddly liberating about it. “Nah, I’m just living life, I’m just gonna have fun,” Brown said, adjusting his Billionaire Boys Club knit cap. “At this point, there’s no more insecurities with me. Everything’s out on the table. You’ve seen everything! Also, as an artist I’m free with my music. I get to talk about the subjects I want to talk about and also reach people. So I’m just gonna live my life, man. There’s nothing to be upset about, nothing to be angry … where I’m at creatively and mentally is great so I’m not gonna let anybody or any naysayer or hater mess that up,” he said before adding with a toothy grin, ” ’cause there’s no point, I’m … winning!” Related Artists Chris Brown
