Don Trip Raps From The Heart On Cee Lo Collabo

‘In real life, I cry too,’ Memphis upstart tells Mixtape Daily of revealing family drama on ‘Letter to My Son.’ By Rob Markman Don Trip Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Don Trip Don Trip would rather make music from his heart than chase a hit, and sure enough, trusting his instincts led the 26-year-old Memphis, Tennessee MC, to his biggest song yet. Trip wrote and recorded the Cee Lo-assisted “Letter to My Son” two years ago after quarreling with his son’s mother fought over visitation rights. “That’s my whole aim as an artist, the fact that I’m human,” Trip told Mixtape Daily. “We become artists and once we get a celebrity status, we start to act as if we are machines, and we’re not. In real life, I cry too. Now, thanks to the popularity of the track, Trip has signed a record deal with producers Cool & Dre and Interscope Records. ” ‘Letter to My Son’ is 110 percent true — I’m still going through it,” he admitted. “It isn’t as bad as it was at first, it’s a little better, but I gotta take it one day at a time.” Trip first developed an interest in rapping when he was 11; by 16, he realized he was actually good at it. During his very first studio session, Trip recorded a song in one take, a task that even veteran rappers can find daunting. The Memphis rapper had no doubt he was on to something. Trip soon began distributing his music, personally handing out free mixtapes until he built enough of a buzz to get booked for shows. Eventually, a mutual friend would connect the up-and-coming spitter with production duo Cool & Dre, who took Trip to Interscope earlier this year. There was no denying the appeal of “Letter,” but the original version of the song didn’t have a chorus. “Jimmy Iovine personally asked for a hook to be added to the record,” Trip revealed. Still, Don was initially reluctant to tamper with his art and argued that the record should stay as is. After some thought, however, he realized the Interscope chairman was right; the MC suggested getting someone soulful, like Cee Lo, for the song. The decision proved to be a good call because the Goodie Mob singer’s feature has given “Letter to My Son” a sound that’s ripe for radio without losing its emotion and integrity. Things are definitely looking up for Don these days. He has a bubbling single, a debut album slated for a 2012 release and he’s finally getting quality time with his son. And he did it all by following his gut and baring his soul on record. Trip added, “I feel like that’s what music is missing: honesty, especially in rap music.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . 30 Seconds To Mars Make History At Triumphant Show

Band entered the Guinness Book of World Records on Wednesday night at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. By James Montgomery Jared Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — For a band that, over the past three years, has been no stranger to adversity — everything from battles with their label to scraps with censors and the occasional stage collapse — 30 Seconds to Mars had probably never had to deal with the kind of trouble that occurred during the encore of their record-setting show Wednesday night in New York. During the crashing crescendo of “Kings and Queens,” a female fan was crushed against a barricade and required immediate medical assistance. “Queens” was the final song of the band’s set, which was preceded by a lengthy presentation from the folks at Guinness World Records, who honored 30STM for Most Shows Played During An Album Cycle (309 was Guinness’ count). Jared Leto invited fans to join them onstage for the finale. Spirits were high inside the Hammerstein Ballroom, and as “Queens” unfolded, they only got higher … until Leto stopped the song and asked for medics to tend to the injured fan. After 20 solemn minutes, EMTs carried her away on a stretcher. “As soon as she got oxygen, she sat up and is doing OK,” 30STM’s management told MTV News after the show. After getting the all-clear, 30 Seconds to Mars undauntedly finished the song and the night ended with the crowd triumphantly chanting its “woah-oh-oh” hook while streamers fell from the ceiling. And not to downplay the severity of the situation, but it helped illustrate everything that made 30 Seconds to Mars’ record-setting run with This Is War so unique. Their ability to overcome obstacles, their willingness to push on, and the otherworldly bond they share with their fans — displayed best when drummer Shannon Leto left the stage to assist the EMTs. The band had already played more than 300 shows, and yet, they still pushed hard on Wednesday, imbuing songs like “Search and Destroy” and “Night of the Hunter” with walloping guitars, anthemic sing-along choruses and washes of spooky synths. Jared sprinted up and down the catwalk stage (not easy to do in a huge black cloak), shined a massive spotlight into the crowd to illuminate fans’ faces, and even performed a few acoustic numbers mid-set. Shannon pounded his kit as sweat flew, and guitarist Tomo Milicevic crunched chords and charmed ethereal soundscapes out of his ax. It could have been show number one, not the final gig of a two-year trek. Of course, 30STM’s fans matched, if not doubled, the band’s enthusiasm. There were signs in the audience touting the Detroit chapter of the Echelon, and at one point, Leto brought a fan onstage who had traveled all the way from Maryland. Every chorus was sung back to the band loudly, each massive chant repeated at top volume, and the opening chords of each new song greeted with squeals of delight. Fans reached skyward as confetti fell, and ooh-ed and aah-ed as lasers shot from the stage. This was definitely a celebration, in just about every conceivable way. Not surprisingly, the band seemed genuinely touched and a tad nostalgic. Jared told fans that the Guinness award was theirs, too, shouting, “I want everyone in here to carry this with them for the rest of their lives,” as he thrust the certificate above his head. As if their record-setting tour didn’t already tip you off to it, the rather frightening delay proved that 30STM are a band seemingly at their best when forced to push on. And on. And on. 30 Seconds To Mars Call Record-Setting Show A ‘Thank You’

Band will enter the Guinness Book of World Records with Wednesday’s show, their 300th in support of This Is War. By James Montgomery Jared Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: MTV News Like most things involving his band, Jared Leto’s idea to gun for the Guinness Book of World Records was born out of one part determination, one part mania — and a whole lot of sleep deprivation. “It was my idea. I’m the guilty party here,” he laughed. “But people started to ask us, with an incredulous look, What the f— is wrong with you? or they would kind of look at us and be like, ‘You guys are still on tour?’ And it started to seep in that maybe this was a little bit crazy. And then I remember as a kid, I was a big fan of the Guinness Book of World Records … so I just started thinking, Maybe we should take a shot at it. ” So they did, and on Wednesday night (December 7), with a sold-out concert at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, 30 Seconds to Mars will officially set a Guinness World Record for most shows performed during a single album cycle. It’s the 300th they’ve played in support of their This Is War album, and yes, though they’re very tired, they’re also quite honored to hold the record for the world’s longest-running road dogs. “I used to love the [Guinness] Book, you know, world’s fattest twins or world’s longest fingernails, and so it’s fun to think we’re a part of something that was a part of our childhood,” Leto said. “Plus, it’s Mars history, and something fun for us to do and another chance for us to stop, take note, say thank you to the people that have shared the journey and helped to take our dreams and make them reality.” Though the record-setting show is sold out, fans from around the world can still witness the band make history through VyRT.com , an interactive site that will stream the Hammerstein gig in all its glory. Once the show is completed, 30STM will play a pair of low-key benefit performances at New York’s St. Peter’s church, and then, finally, their schedules will be clear. And no, they’re not quite sure what they’ll do with all that free time. “I think the most time we’ve had off over the past two years has been, maybe, two weeks, and we shot a video during that time,” Leto laughed. “It’s almost like taking away your wife or newborn baby and then saying, ‘OK, go and live another life.’ It’s become such a deep, intrinsic part of our daily grind. … It may not be as easy as we’ve all been assuming, but whatever it is … it will be a step towards a really different future.” A future that includes more Mars music? Well, that remains to be seen. For this week, at least, 30 Seconds to Mars aren’t thinking about what lies ahead; they’re remembering everything that’s led them to this point. After all, it’s been quite a journey, to say the very least. “It’s a new beginning; that’s always really strange, exciting, uncomfortable but important. We all know you close one door and another one can open, but I think the future of 30 Seconds to Mars, as undetermined as things may be right now, it’s still very exciting,” Leto said. “There are a lot of projects under that banner; music is one, and we’re also really grateful, and this week is about sharing that with everyone as we say goodbye and thank everyone for the most amazing journey we’ve ever experienced in our lives. We’ll always look back at this time as one of the most important and impactful periods of our creative lives, ever.” Congratulate 30 Seconds to Mars on their record in the comments below! Chris Brown Sex Tape With Draya Michele: Real or Fake?

Is Chris Brown the man gettin’ down and freaky with Draya Michele in a new sex tape that’s making the Internet rounds? Or is it some Breezy impostor? Brown’s rep says the person who stars in a new XXX video being shopped around L.A. is definitely not Chris, despite salacious reports to the contrary. According to MediaTakeOut, the mystery seller wants $50,000 in exchange for footage which allegedly features Brown and the Basketball Wives star. Draya Michele, as you can see, is not shy. But did she freak with Breezy? MediaTakeOut claims they have seen the alleged Chris Brown sex tape, but sadly, were forced to pass on the thing because it was out of their price range. Nevertheless, the singer’s rep says “The report is absolutely not true.” A second source in Brown’s camp smells a conspiracy, in fact. “Doesn’t it seem like a coincidence that every time Chris has a major performance or event on the horizon, some fake story like this breaks?” he asked . It’s true. These stories do seem to follow Chris Brown wherever he goes … though he can take responsibility for some of that with his well-documented actions.

Kate Middleton Pregnancy Rumor of the Day: Expectant Duchess Collapses!

Is Kate Middleton pregnant ? Needless to say, we highly doubt it, but we’ve now read three different celebrity tabloid reports to that effect in as many days. In this one, the Duchess collapsed no less! The Star cover story, citing a “palace tattletale,” says the mother-to-be and Prince William, who wed on April 29, are expecting, and she’s had complications. An ambulance was called, if you believe the magazine, after William found his spouse of six months unconscious on the floor. The stock photo is so convincing. Not surprisingly, almost no one believes the bombshells of the past week, which include In Touch matter-of-factly saying she’s preggers and Us ‘ more carefully worded story about Kate being “ready for baby” or some such nonsense . A Buckingham Palace spokesman has called past tabloid reports “absurd” and “certainly not true,” but you have to wonder what prompted this week’s deluge. It’s not the first time Star made Kate Middleton pregnant. In June 2010, the magazine reported that she was expecting a baby … before even getting engaged. BTW, if the baby is a girl, the couple will name her Diana. Obvi.

Coldplay Call Mylo Xyloto A ‘Schizophrenic Album’

Band’s latest album ‘keeps changing sounds,’ frontman Chris Martin tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Gil Kaufman Coldplay’s Chris Martin Photo: John Shearer/ Getty Images It may be their best, biggest and boldest album yet, but Coldplay ‘s Chris Martin knows which adjective he would use to describe the band’s brand-new Mylo Xyloto : “It’s definitely a schizophrenic album … it keeps changing sounds,” he said. “That’s why we called it such a strange thing, Mylo Xyloto. Because we felt like so many people have already made up their minds about us, both good and bad, that we can sort of start again from scratch and try and reflect all the music we listen to and we love.” That sentiment is readily apparent throughout Xyloto, an album full of walloping electronics, soaring choruses and quiet, tender ballads. In a lot of ways, it plays very much like the band’s personal iPod, packing anthems like current single “Paradise” alongside artfully minimal instrumentals and hushed acoustic numbers like “U.F.O.” Even Rihanna shows up, lending her vocals to the track “Princess of China.” And that shuffling schizophrenia is due as much to the band’s taste as it is the ethos of frequent collaborator Brian Eno, a man who practically lives to break down boundaries. “Working with Brian, he was very much of the opinion that you should just be free to follow whatever you feel sounds best,” Martin said, “without worrying about having to talk about it in interviews and everything and explain it.” And, given all that, it’s somewhat fitting that Mylo Xyloto actually began life as a far different animal: a quiet, acoustic-based album. But as their songs began to grow, Coldplay quickly realized that their self-imposed parameters couldn’t contain their ambitions, so they scrapped them and started from scratch. And, not surprisingly, the end result is a record that defies convention — and, of course, definition too. “Very early on in the process of recording this record, we were playing a lot of acoustic instruments and we had it in our mind that we might try to record a small-sounding, intimate, reflective record,” drummer Will Champion explained. “And [a song like ‘Paradise’] came about, and it dawned on us that we couldn’t play it in that acoustic style. So we thought, ‘OK, we’ll finish this one and then we’ll do another record,’ and the realization came very quickly that we can’t really focus on more than one thing at once. “So we decided to put everything in one basket, and some of those songs from the acoustic thing survived — the song ‘Charlie Brown’ was originally in that format and ‘Us Against the World,’ ” he continued. “And I think putting all our eggs in one basket allowed us to kind of free everything up and allow the songs to dictate where they want to go.” What do you think of Mylo Xyloto ?
